IN THE CRUCIBLEHow did the characters in the play The Crucible judge others?

EFFECTS ON SOCIETY What are the effects of judging others on society? What does it do to us? WHY DO WE JUDGE?

Although we are discouraged from judging and making assumptions about others based on their appearance and behaviours, we continue to do it. From the moment we see someone, our brains automatically make assumptions about them from the way one dresses or carries themselves. Being conscious about this and our efforts to not be judgemental, why do we still do it?

When we judge others, our brains make two types of attributions to people: situatutional and personality. Personality attributions stick to people more than situational. Being unkind is makes more of an impression than behaviour caused from being tired because it is temporary. Judging people helps us understand the world and things we see without spending too much time. It is much easier to assume for a moment than to get to know someone.

TODAY VS THENHow can judging in today’s modern world be compared to when the Crucible took place?

In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the characters judge one another in many scenarios. Throughout the entire play, characters make judgements on their neighbours, assuming that they may be witches. Arthur Miller also shows how poor judgement may lead to hysteria and tragedy in The Crucible. Additionally, the characters are all Puritans; therefore each individual is judged based on their acts according to the Bible. For example, John Proctor was harshly judged by his wife for not respecting “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

“It is easy to praise or to blame others for their actions, but unless we know their motivation, we really know nothing at all.”

- Andy Puddicombe

Judging others may prevent us from living a healthy lifestyle. Too much of it can take a toll on our thoughts, emotions and even physical health. It also impacts others. Judging someone can cause one ot be discrimatory.
