Welcome to ARO 2015!On 24 February 2015, we will mark World Spay Day by sending all our sterilisation dogs and cats (we hope to do over 20 that day) home with a gift (perhaps a new blanket or a nice new flea collar!). If you wish to support ARO on WORLD SPAY DAY please contact me on 021-3965511 or email [email protected]

What drives people’s actions? What drove 2 brothers to storm Paris offices of Charlie Hebdow magazine and cold bloodedly mow down innocent lives? While in another part of the world, people sat in lengthy meetings to fight for the release of captive wild animals (eg: Mali the Elephant, trapped in Manila Zoo http://www.freemali.com)? There are thousands of fabulous campaigns worldwide to save animals from human cruelty and it is exciting to watch the campaigners determination and success! While someone is willing to behead another human being, another person cannot sleep at night because he could not rescue the last kitten and this bothers him terribly! Can “education” fix the sick minds of people who plan cowardly terror attacks designed to kill masses? Perhaps the privilege of being raised by “involved” parents and care givers, with animal companions; experiencing the joy of a puppy and softness of a kitten, while teaching solid morals and ethics is a better ideal to work towards? Humans should take a leaf out of the animal kingdom and maybe we will stand a chance of bettering our planet ~ wishful thinking?

Til next time

Why do we vaccinate our pets and spend hundreds of Rands a year in taking our pets for their annual wellness check-up and vaccination? Well, vaccination is one of the cornerstones of preventative health with effective parasite control, a healthy diet and sterilisation keeping our pets healthy.

Many people prefer not vaccinate their pets; either due to the cost or the misconceptions of the side effects of vaccines; despite the obvious benefits of vaccination to anyone in veterinary medicine. Remember vaccinating a pup against Parvo virus is a lot cheaper than treating that same pup for an often lethal disease like Parvo virus enteritis. Also; vaccine preventable diseases are still common i.e. Canine Distemper, Parvo virus enteritis and the risk of vaccine side-effects are far less than the benefits from disease prevention.

You should vaccinate your pet to protect your pet as you never know when your pet will be exposed to a disease and vaccination should stimulate your pet’s immunity to prevent your pet getting some severely debilitating or fatal diseases. As a side benefit you vaccinating your pet will also reduce the likelihood of other pets getting these diseases asit will lead to healthier

pet communities and thus less sick animals and thus less exposure to these diseases.

As a minimum you should at least have your animals vaccinated with the core vaccinations. Core vaccinations are essential vaccinations to prevent diseases which will cause death in puppies and kittens, diseases that causes severe illness in adult pets or those diseases which poses a significant risk to people i.e. rabies.

Depending on your pet’s lifestyle (i.e. does he travel with you, etc) and the prevalence of disease in your area; your pet might also benefit from vaccinations against non-core vaccines i.e. Feline leukemia virus or FIV.

Speak to your vet about vaccination protocols for your specific pets. And be reassured that having your pets vaccinated will help your best friend stay healthy!

We decided to censor this picture because the true photo is awful, but we also know that we cannot hide our reality from our donors because as an animal lover who wants to help end the suffering, you need to know what is going on “out there”!

Every year animal welfare groups struggle with the Fireworks issue. This dear family pet just happened to pick up a cracker which the kids were playing with because no-one was supervising and had the top of his mouth blown out. Please support Anti Firework campaigns!

ARO thanks the City of Cape Town for their support with distribution of Anti Firework posters in 2014.

There are 3 animal act circuses in South Africa. McLarens Circus have: “a variety of animals that include: dogs, goats, miniature horses, camels, welsh ponies, pythons, lions, white lions, Bengal tigers and white Bengal tigers.” Quote: www.mclarencircus.co.za Boswell Circus has performing horses, ponies, goats and lamas. Boswell still owns performing elephants, but they appear to be in a “zoo” set up near Johannesburg and not on tour in Cape Town. Mongolian Dream Circus has ponies and dogs as part of their acts and may have other animals from time to time as they appear to invite acts to join them. All 3 circuses have websites and/or Facebook pages which you can check for information. ARO opposes the use of animals in circuses and asks that you use the enclosed Petition amongst your friends, family and colleagues. If you need more copies please download from www.animalrescue.org.za or call Karen de Klerk on 021-3965511. The Petition will be presented to the South African Government (who do not accept on line petitions) on World Animal Day 3 October 2015 Return information is on the Petition. Happy signing!

Animals in Circuses in South Africa ~ the saddest show on earth

Pet shops sell lots of fun accessories for pets, but they also sell a lot of imported cheap junk! Take a look at this cage. It measures 25cm tall, 15cm wide and 20cm long ~ this is what is being imported and sold for hamsters to live in! Do not buy pets from pet shops ~ rather adopt your pet from a reputable animal

shelter! If you see a shop selling cages this small do let ARO know ~ action will be taken! If you wish to adopt bunnies, guinea pigs or small caged pets, please find out the realities of their care as many people spend a fortune and then get sick of the cleaning 2 months later!
