Where is your organization in relation to implementing standards?

• A tool that provides a quick assessment on how people feel about an issue

• Use sticky notes with no names to be more authentic

• Determine what we want to measure (How deep is the deployment with standards

• Discuss how this can set the tone for the training (pulse reading, burning issues etc.)

Approaches That Rely on External Assessments

(Student must score proficient on a region high-stakes assessment)

Advantages:• Unchanged system

(e.g.course, scheduling, and record keeping)

• Parents are used to this approach

Disadvantages:• Limited to the core subject

areas• Limited connection to daily

classroom activities• High anxiety at specific

grade levels

Approaches that use core courses

(State standards are embedded in specific, required courses)

Advantages:• Easy transition into current

system• Course grade indicate

student performance• Easy to identify what

standards are being addressed

Disadvantages:• Does not accommodate

many standards• Does not lend itself to

integration of multiple standards

• Specific needs of students aren’t being addressed

Approaches that rely on projects, exhibitions, and portfolios

(Students must score proficient on performance tasks that are connected to standards)

Advantages:• Performance tasks are

concrete representations of specific standards

• Connected to daily classroom activities

• Variety of ways to demonstrate standards

Disadvantages:• Difficult to address all

standards through projects

• Time needed for staff to create the projects

• Concerns about validity and reliability

Approaches that redesign their systems to meet the needs of each individual student

(Students progress through developmental levels at their rate to meet specific standards this includes aligned standards, assessment,

instructional best practices, and reporting)RISC Model

Advantage:• Research strongly supports this

model• Meets the individual needs of

every student• Everyone knows the

expectation• Highly accountable/aligned• Support multiple ways to reach

standards

Disadvantage:• Massive paradigm shift for

education• Scheduling, reporting,

assessments and resource allocation are redesigned

• Advil, Mallox, and Rogaine will be your best friends

Models of Implementing Standards

• Approaches that rely on external assessments eg. Alaska Exit Exam

• Approaches that use core courses eg. course grades tied to standards

• Approaches that rely on projects, exhibitions, and portfolios eg.score on science fair project

• Approaches that redesign their system to meet the needs of every student eg. RISC Model

Using the RISC Organizational Self-Assessment tool, first determine where your

schools are and what are some strengths and OFIs for Standards-Based Design?

• Clarify the task

• Reflect individually

• Impact on your system

• Share with your partner

CRIS

• CClarify: the question or project• RReflect: individually• IImpact: on you and your system• SShare: your thoughts within your

group

Using your self assessment tool create a minute check-up matrix to check the deployment of standards, instruction, assessment and reporting in a class, school or district

Recommendations:

1 minute RISC checkupclassroomschooldistrict

• Standards (How do I know standards are driving instruction?)

• Instructional Strategies(What are the instructional strategies being used?)

• Assessment Strategies(Are the assessments aligned to the standards?)

• Reporting Documents(How to reporting document reflect students’ progress on standards?)

DeLorenzo’s Top Eight Excuses to Guarantee No Change

• We tried that before• Our district is different• We don’t have the money• Our organization is too small or big• Micro management is our friend• If only you really understood our situation• It’s impossible with our bus schedule!• If only we didn’t have any students I think we

could change a few things!

Balance Instructional Model

• Drill and Practice: Traditional teaching, knowledge bits, skill based• Practical Application: How will the student use this?• Interactive: Simulation of an event ”City Unit”• Real Life Connection: Outside the walls of the classroom, doing the real thing
