Asian Classic – Egg Fu Yung

For a meal that comes together quickly but provides both protein and vegetables, our go-to is egg fu yung. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover pork, shrimp, chicken, or ground beef from last night’s dinner. If you do

not have bamboo shoots, you can substitute an equal amount of celery or Chinese cabbage.

We like to pair this recipe with a side of steamed rice and egg rolls. In just 15 minutes from start to finish, you can serve your family freshly prepared Asian food at home!

INGREDIENTS: 15min to prepare serves 46 eggs1/2 pint bean sprouts4 tablespoons scallions4 teaspoons bamboo shoots4 water chestnuts

“Art for Kids” Program Series Continues at the

Cazenovia Public Library Children ages 8-12 are invited to join Children’s Program

Coordinator Jenna Wright Martin at the Cazenovia Public Library for Art for Kids! The next installment of this hands-on program series will be held Friday, September 28 at 1:30 pm in the Community Room. Discussion and activities will focus on artist turned naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).

The German-born botanical and natural history illustrator was one of the first naturalists to conduct in-depth studies of insects. She recorded and illustrated the life cycles of 186 insect species. Like John James Audubon, Merian placed her subjects (e.g., caterpillars, butterflies, and plants) in their natural habitats. Her work documenting the nature of metamorphosis challenged contemporary ideas surrounding insect development. She was also responsible for discovering new species of insects and plants in the South American country of Suriname.

During the September Art for Kids, participants will study Merian’s work to learn about the life cycles of insects. They will then have the opportunity to create their own insect art. All materials will be provided. Class size is limited to ensure program quality. Call or stop by the Library to reserve a spot.

Participants will qualify for the chance to win a beautiful art set donated by a good friend of the Library. The kit contains 178 pieces, including colored markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolor cakes, oil pastels, acrylic paint tubes, and much more—all arranged in a beautiful wooden case with adjustable trays.

All events at the Cazenovia Public Library are free and open to the public. For more information, call (315) 655-9322 or visit www.cazenoviapubliclibrary.org.

Cazenovia Public Library to Host Fall Festival Pumpkin

Painting Event This fall, the Cazenovia Public Library will celebrate the

change of seasons with a family pumpkin painting event on Saturday, September 29 from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm. The hands-on program is presented in association with the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce’s 5th Annual Fall Festival.

In this fun and creative program, children and their families will have the opportunity to select and decorate their own pumpkins. All materials will be provided. Children’s Program Coordinator Jenna Wright Martin will lead the event on the Library front lawn.

All events at the Cazenovia Public Library are free and open to the public. For more information, call 315-655-9322 or visit www.cazenoviapubliclibrary.org.

Tour the Towpath Event- Cycle 36 miles of the Erie Canalway Trail

Wampsville, NY - Explore the most famous canal in history by bike on September 15-16th at the 4th Annual Tour the Towpath event.

Tour the Towpath is a 36-mile supported, off-road recreational bike ride along the Towpath trail within the Old Erie Canal State Historic Park from DeWitt to Rome, NY in Central New York. There are lots of organized and spontaneous things to discover along the way including charming canal-side communities.

Tour the Towpath is a family friendly event and open to cyclists of all abilities. In the past riders have ranged in ages from 4 to 87. The Old Erie Canal Towpath trail is off-road, mostly stone dust, and flat (it’s why this area was selected to start building the Erie Canal 200 years ago). Participants have two full days to explore the park and all the area has to offer. Special activities during the event include a scavenger hunt along the route.

Riders will receive a map and guide to the many attractions, museums, restaurants, shops, and historic sites that they can

1 transmitting most of the auditory information. A new study by scientists at Karolinska Institutet shows that the type 1 cells actually comprise three very different cell types, which tallies with earlier research showing variations in the electrical properties and sonic response of type 1 cells.

“We now know that there are three different routes into the central auditory system, instead of just one,” says Francois Lallemend, research group leader at the Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, who led the study. “This makes us better placed to understand the part played by the different neurons in hearing. We’ve also mapped out which genes are active in the individual cell types.”

The team conducted their study on mice using the relatively new technique of single-cell RNA sequencing. The result is a catalogue of the genes expressed in the nerve cells, which can give scientists a solid foundation for better understanding the auditory system as well as for devising new therapies and drugs.

“Our study can open the way for the development of genetic tools that can be used for new treatments for different kinds of hearing disorders, such as tinnitus,” says Dr Lallemend. “Our mapping can also give rise to different ways of influencing the function of individual nerve cells in the body.”

The study shows that these three neuron types probably play a part in the decoding of sonic intensity (i.e. volume), a function that is crucial during conversations in a loud environment, which rely on the ability to filter out the background noise. This property is also important in different forms of hearing disorders, such as tinnitus or hyperacusis (oversensitivity to sound).

“Once we know which neurons cause hyperacusis we’ll be able to start investigating new therapies to protect or repair them,” explains Dr Lallemend. “The next step is to show what effect these individual nerve cells have on the auditory system, which can lead to the development of better auditory aids such as cochlear implants.”

The researchers have also shown through comparative studies on adult mice that these different types of neurons are already present at birth.

explore in the communities between DeWitt and Rome. All participants are invited to an after-ride celebration at Copper City Brewery in Rome with live music, food trucks, and specials on beverages for those over 21.

“What makes this event so great is it’s an organized event but you pick what you see along the way,” says Ken Hammond, owner of InStride Sports, and event organizer. “Participants literally ride on the scenic towpath that mules once used to pull the canal boats. You’ll also ride along historic working aqueducts and by sunken canal boats all while having the opportunity stop into the many quaint canal side communities along the way for craft beers, great local restaurants, live music, unique historic sites, and fresh experiences.”

Participants will overnight in the canal-side community of Canastota with music and entertainment scheduled. Overnight riders may choose to either camp at the event’s designated campsite area (included with registration), or purchase a room from a hotel in the village (extra cost, on own). Tour the Towpath also offers a 1 day ride option for those looking for a shorter experience.

The cost for Tour the Towpath is $40 for adults and $18 for kids for the 2 day ride or $35 for adults and $15 for kids for the 1 day ride. Day of registration is available, but the price goes up slightly. Shuttle transportation is available for an additional cost; reserve space on shuttle during registration. Registration includes a detailed map and guide, t-shirt, luggage transport, bike support, and camping accommodations. Many museums and attractions along the trail also offer free entry to Tour the Towpath riders.

This event is made possible by InStride Sports, the Village of Canastota, and the Old Erie Canal Community Working Group. Bike support is provided during the event by Syracuse Bicycle.

Discovery Of New Neurons In The Inner Ear Can Lead To New Therapies For Hearing Disorders

Date: September 12, 2018Source: Karolinska InstitutetResearchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have identified

four types of neurons in the peripheral auditory system, three of which are new to science. The analysis of these cells can lead to new therapies for various kinds of hearing disorders, such as tinnitus and age-related hearing loss. The study is published in Nature Communications.

When sound reaches the inner ear, it is converted into electrical signals that are relayed to the brain via the ear’s nerve cells in cochlea. Previously, most of these cells were considered to be of two types: type 1 and type 2 neurons, type

A Wearable Device For Regrowing Hair

Date: September 12, 2018Source: American Chemical SocietyAlthough some people embrace the saying “bald is beautiful,”

for others, alopecia, or excessive hair loss, can cause stress and anxiety. Some studies have shown that stimulating the skin with lasers can help regrow hair, but the equipment is often large, consumes lots of energy and is difficult to use in daily life. Now, researchers have developed a flexible, wearable photostimulator that speeds up hair growth in mice. They report their results in ACS Nano.

Affecting millions of men and women worldwide, alopecia has several known causes, including heredity, stress, aging and elevated male hormones. Common treatments include medications, such as minoxidil, corticosteroid injections and hair transplant surgery. In addition, irradiating the bald area with a red laser can stimulate hair follicles, causing cells to proliferate. However, this treatment is often impractical for home use. So,

Keon Jae Lee and colleagues wanted to develop a flexible, durable photostimulator that could be worn on human skin.

The team fabricated an ultrathin array of flexible vertical micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs). The array consisted of 900 red μLEDs on a chip slightly smaller than a postage stamp and only 20 μm thick. The device used almost 1,000 times less power per unit area than a conventional phototherapeutic laser, and it did not heat up enough to cause thermal damage to human skin. The array was sturdy and flexible, enduring up to 10,000 cycles of bending and unbending. The researchers tested the device’s ability to regrow hair on mice with shaved backs. Compared with untreated mice or those receiving minoxidil injections, the mice treated with the μLED patch for 15 minutes a day for 20 days showed significantly faster hair growth, a wider regrowth area and longer hairs.

The candle is not dangerous, I hope.”“Sometimes it burns your fingers,” answered Trot, “but

that’s about the worst it can do--’cept to blow out when you don’t want it to.”

Cap’n Bill shielded the flame with his hand and crept into the hole. It wasn’t any too big for a grown man, but after he had crawled a few feet, it grew larger. Trot came close behind him, and the Ork followed. “Seems like a reg’lar tunnel,” muttered the sailor man, who was creeping along awkwardly because of his wooden leg. The rocks, too, hurt his knees. For nearly half an hour the three moved slowly along the tunnel, which made

many twists and turns and sometimes slanted downward and sometimes upward. Finally, Cap’n Bill stopped short, with an exclamation of disappointment, and held the flickering candle far ahead to light the scene.

“What’s wrong?” demanded Trot, who could see nothing because the sailor’s form completely filled the hole.

“Why, we’ve come to the end of our travels, I guess,” he replied.

“Is the hole blocked?” inquired the Ork.“No, it’s wuss nor that,” replied Cap’n Bill sadly. “I’m on

the edge of a precipice. Wait a minute an’ I’ll move along and let you see for yourselves. Be careful, Trot, not to fall.” Then he crept forward a little and moved to one side, holding the candle so that the girl could see to follow him. The Ork came next, and now all three knelt on a narrow ledge of rock which

dropped straight away and left a huge black space which the tiny flame of the candle could not illuminate.

“Hm!” said the Ork, peering over the edge. “This doesn’t look very promising, I’ll admit. But let me take your candle, and I’ll fly down and see what’s below us.”

“Aren’t you afraid?” asked Trot.“Certainly I’m afraid,” responded the Ork. “But if we

intend to escape, we can’t stay on this shelf forever. So as I notice you poor creatures cannot fly, it is my duty to explore the place for you.” More Next WeekACROSS

CHAPTER 3 THE ORK - Continued

“Yes indeed, the Orks are admitted to be Kings of the Air.”“Your wings don’t seem to amount to much,” remarked Trot.“Well, they are not very big,” admitted the Ork, waving the

four hollow skins gently to and fro, “but they serve to support my body in the air while I speed along by means of my tail. Still, taken altogether,

I’m very handsomely formed, don’t you think?”Trot did not like to reply, but Cap’n Bill said gravely, “For anOrk,” said he, “you’re a wonder. I’ve never seen one afore,

but I can imagine you’re as good as any.”That seemed to please the creature, and it began walking

around the cavern, making its way easily up the slope. While it was gone, Trot and Cap’n Bill each took another sip from

the water flask to wash down their breakfast.“Why, here’s a hole--an exit--an outlet!” exclaimed the Ork

from above.“We know,” said Trot. “We found it last night.”“Well, then, let’s be off,” continued the Ork after sticking itshead into the black hole and sniffing once or twice. “The

air seems fresh and sweet, and it can’t lead us to any worse place than this.”

The girl and the sailor man got up and climbed to the side of the Ork. “We’d almost decided to explore this hole before you came,” explained Cap’n Bill, “but it’s a dangerous place to navigate in the dark, so wait till I light a candle.”

“What is a candle?” inquired the Ork.“You’ll see in a minute,” said Trot. The old sailor drew one of the candles from the right-side

pocket and the tin matchbox from his left side pocket. When he lighted the match, the Ork gave a startled jump and eyed the flame suspiciously, but Cap’n Bill proceeded to light the candle and the action interested the Ork very much. “Light,” it said somewhat nervously, “is valuable in a hole of this sort.
