This workshop will explore ways to develop appropriate methods to evaluate or measure student achievement. Learn to use a spreadsheet to evaluate test results.

5. Introduction to Bird Biology Instructor: Dr. Alan Maccarone

Dates: June 4-5 Time: 7:30am-3:30pm Course #: SCIE 2023-05 Grade Level: MS/HS Location: Science 127 Tuition: $290.00 Cr: 2 Educators will be introduced to the basics of Avian Biology, including anatomy, morphology, principles of systematics and classification, evolution, ecology, and behavior. Laboratory and field exercises held on both days will emphasize the use of study skins, include the examination and measurement of anatomical characteristics (bills, wings, feathers, and feet), demonstrate the proper use of optical equipment and field guides, as well as the application of techniques that are useful for competent classroom or field instruction in avian biology. Exercises will include field identification of local birds found in different habitats such as riparian areas (along rivers), prairies and grasslands, wetlands, and wooded areas. Important note: Field-based activities will take place at off-campus facilities at a field station. Transportation to off-campus locations will be provided by University vehicles.

6. Water, Water, Everywhere Instructor: John Richardson

Dates: June 4-5 Time: 9:00am-4:30pm Course #: SCIE 2270-07 Grade Level: Elem-MS Location: GPNC Tuition: $145.00 Cr: 1 The availability of an ample, consistent supply of fresh water has a pronounced influence on the flora and fauna of a region. The workshop will focus on the physical characteristics, forms and distribution of water, with an emphasis on the influence of water on life in Kansas and the Wichita area. Related topics will include the water cycle, plate tectonics, air and water currents, climate, and geographic regions. Participants should bring a flash drive or lap top computer for the purpose of downloading the course content and copies of the activities presented. Workshop participants will explore a variety of paper sculpting techniques applicable to the construction of masks. Participants will plan and create a three dimensional mask incorporating design elements, expressive qualities, and attention to craftsmanship. A brief oral presentation will be given by each participant. SUMMER ON-CAMPUS HOUSING All individuals participating in Friends University’s summer education workshops are invited to stay in Green Residence Hall, one of Friends’ on-campus residential facilities, for $20 per person per night. Housing is available from June 1 – August 1 with the exception of a few days. Green Residence Hall is divided into suites, with each suite containing three two-person bedrooms, a kitchen (including full refrigerator and microwave), two bathrooms and a living area. Suites contain furniture (beds, mattresses, etc.) but no linens are provided. Thus, all individuals are responsible for bringing their own sheets, towels, toiletries, etc. Local phone service, elevators, Internet (hard-line connection; computer with Ethernet cord and cable are required), TV lounges, vending machines and laundry rooms are also available. The use of tobacco and alcohol is prohibited in all university facilities. Pets are not allowed in any buildings. Individuals wishing to stay in Green Hall must sign up in advance and pay the full amount of their deposit before or upon move-in. FRIENDS UNIVERSITY Some workshops offer confirmation of attendance which may be used for CEUs/PDPs based on prior

approval within your school system. All workshops are offered for graduate level credit and available to licensed educators. The

workshops are recommended for renewal purposes, postgraduate, or professional enrichment. To register:

Payment must be received to hold your spot. Make checks payable to Friends University or call (316) 295-5516 to have charges

e-market. Follow instructions under Teacher Education Workshops. List final transaction number on pre-registration form.

Tuition is $145 per credit hour.

No pre-registrations will be taken the first day of the workshop. All pre-registration must be completed prior to the start of the

workshop.

An e-mail reminder will be sent the week before the start of the workshop.

No refunds will be issued beginning one week prior to the workshop start date. A $25 cancellation fee per credit will be assessed

on all refunds requested. If the minimum number of participants do not enroll, the workshop will be cancelled, you will be

notified and a full refund will be given.

All workshops will be letter-graded. As a result, projects/assignments will be assessed. Unofficial grade sheets will be mailed out

by registrar after the grades are posted.
