A BRIEF SUMMARY

You’re most likely familiar with the play Wicked,

which is based on this book, but it is not the same thing.

Wicked is about the life of Elphaba, more

commonly known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and all

of the major events that led to her becoming allegedly

wicked. We follow her through tragedy and mystery, love

and romance, as she embarks on her life’s journey

through each part of Oz.

A BRIEF SUMMARY (CON’T.)

You probably view Elphaba as cruel and

cold-hearted, but this book will change how you

feel about that and in my case, make you root

for her, even though you know she’s going to

die in the end. ( Sorry to ruin it for you if you’ve

never read/seen The Wizard of Oz before.)

WHY I LIKE WICKED

The author, Gregory Maguire, tells the story

through the eyes of Elphaba’s peers.

Maguire writes the book in a way that convinces

you Elphaba truly is the heroine of the story.

In the end, you truly feel for Elphaba and all the

tragedies she’s had to endure.

The book is written in such a way that you never

want to put it down.

AN EXCERPT FROM WICKED

‘The midwives, crawling on hands and knees out of the

back of the clock-wagon, had their little discharge at last. They

protected the infant from the dripping gutter. “Look, a rainbow,”

said the senior, bobbing her head. A sickly scarf of colored light

hung in the sky.

What they saw, rubbing the caul and blood off the skin-

was it just a trick of the light? After all, following the storm the

grass did seem to throb with its own color, the roses zinged and

hovered with crazy glory on their stems. But even with these effects

of light and atmosphere, the midwives couldn’t deny what they saw.

Beneath the spit of the mother’s fluids the infant glistened a

scandalous shade of pale emerald.’ page 26

WHY YOU SHOULD READ WICKED

The book explains why the Witch became so

wicked.

It leaves you hungering for more.

In the end, you’ll smile with content at how

beautifully written the book was.

Once you start, you can’t put it down.

The way the author views Elphaba makes you

feel her pain and joy.

WARNINGS

There are almost 500 pages in Wicked.

If you’re not a big reader who knows big words,

this is not the book for you.

This is a book for people who are pretty mature

and want to know more about The Wicked Witch

of the West.
