Widener University School of Law summer institutes in Europe provide law stu-dents with the unique opportunity to build their own "Summer International Law Experience".

Widener's programs in Lausanne, Switzerland and Venice, Italy have been de-signed with the student in mind. Each program consists of two 2-week segments and students have numerous options when enrolling in courses.

Students can select from the following options:

■ Students with a limited amount of time in the summer can select any one of the two week segments and spend 2 weeks in Europe studying international law and then return home for the rest of the summer.

■ Students with more time can select one two-week segment in Lausanne and one 2-week segment in Venice or take 2 segments in one location for a month long summer experience.

■ Students with time for adventure can select the first two-week segment in Lausanne, spend the next 2 weeks traveling through Europe, and then select the last 2-week segment in Venice for a complete summer European experience.

The myriad of options available in our European Summer Law programs mean that almost every student can build a personal program to meet educa-tional, financial, and personal goals.

Lausanne As a student in our Lausanne Summer Law Institute, you have the opportunity to study abroad in Lausanne, Switzer-land, a breathtakingly beautiful city near Geneva, which is known throughout the world as an international center for law, policy, and diplomacy. Widener students have been trav-eling to Switzerland for a unique and exciting summer pro-gram since 1991.

The University of Lausanne is our new academic host and Lausanne is a beautiful location with a more user-friendly

campus. Our shorter course for-mat proved to be very popular with our students allowing them to choose among several options including (i) more travel time after completing course work, (ii) taking a second set of courses in our Venice program, and (iii) returning home earlier, for summer work or other activities.

Switzerland is bordered by France, Germany, Austria, Italy and tiny Liech-tenstein. Lausanne's central location places most of the great cities and regions of Europe within reach; Paris, Milan, Florence, Venice, Brussels, Mu-nich and Innsbruck are easy weekend journeys. Adventuresome stu-dents can reach Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, or Barcelona in a day (or night) by train.

Venice has been known as the "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light". It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The only way to get around Venice is to walk or take a boat. Many Venetians have their own boats but the visitor to Venice will have to rely on water taxis (vaporettos) and the public boats, which are used to move around the canals of Venice and the lagoon. One of the historic places to visit while in Venice

is the bell tower in St. Mark’s Square. The Bridge of Sighs received its name in the 17th century, because the prisoners who passed through it on their way to the prison cells on the other side would most likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and freedom for the last time. Widener's programs in Venice and Lausanne have been redesigned. Each program consists of two 2-week segments and students have nu-merous options when enrolling in courses. Our shorter course format proved to be very popular with our stu-dents allowing them to choose among several options including taking courses in our Lausanne program first and then studying in Venice. Widener’s European Summer Law programs mean that almost every stu-dent can build a personal program to meet educational, financial, and personal goals. Justice Holland of the Delaware Supreme Court will teach Comparative Corporate Law. The Delaware Supreme Court is the leading corporate law court in the United States. This is a fabulous opportunity for those interested in corporate law.

Sydney Although many changes have occurred in Sydney since its formation as a convict settlement, historical buildings and places that tell stories of the past have been preserved through time and are waiting for you. The Sydney Opera House, The Mint, Hyde Park Bar-racks, The Australian Museum and Government House have all played a role in the history of this city and indeed Australia. The Rocks, a restored historical district at the north end of the city center, has buildings that date to al-most the very beginning such as Cadmans Cottage, with the other buildings dating from then until the late 1800s

and early 1900s. It is called Australia’s First Place. Sydney's Rocks area will give you a real sense of how the first European settlers lived as this is where the place that many of them called home. While the area has been modernized and is a bustling business centre today, many of the buildings, cobble stone streets and lane ways are still largely intact making this area a living museum of life in a bygone era.

Hyde Park is the city's central open green space and it was named after the Hyde Park in London. The tranquil setting is popular among office workers who want some time out from the concrete jungle. The central pathway through the park is an impressive, tiled, fig lined road linking two of the parks other features, the Archibald Fountain and the War Memorial.

This year the Australian Legal Perspectives course will be a joint course with students from University of North Carolina, Santa Clara University, and Widener; taught by Austra-lian Faculty.

Nairobi Nairobi summer program is an extraordinary academic and cultural experience that will change the way you view the world. Since 1988 Widener has operated this summer program in partnership with the University of Nairobi. Kenya is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world. It is justly famous for its extraordinary national parks teeming with wildlife, beautiful beaches on the Indian Ocean, and excellent hiking in the

mountains including Mt. Kilimanjaro.

You will find that Kenyans are as generous and friendly as any group of people in the world. Several members of our Institute’s Kenyan faculty have helped lead the fight for com-prehensive constitutional reform and are members of the Constitu-tional Review Commission. On weekends students travel in groups to game parks, visit the unspoiled and less crowded beaches on the Indian Ocean for snorkel-ing, scuba, or a relaxing, hike in the mountains or visit new friends they made. There is far more to see and do than one person could possibly enjoy in a summer. You may be interested in visiting or vol-unteering with Water is Life, Kenya, an NGO devoted to provide clean water to remote villages to reduce disease and improve the prospects for rural women. This year we have the opportunity for a one-credit independent study working on an amicus brief in the ongoing piracy cases in Mom-basa, Kenya. Students will visit the High Court in Mombasa as well as the prison where the piracy suspects are held. If the visit coincides with the arguments in the High Court on the petition for which the amicus brief is written, students will be invited to attend the proceed-ings.

“Students will be able to explore t h e c u l t u r a l d i v e r s i t y o f Kenya.”

Widener School of Law offers students an op-portunity to study abroad during the summer of 2011. Students may travel to Lausanne, Nairobi, Sydney, or Venice and earn credits while enjoying an enriching academic experience and the history and culture of a foreign country.

Summer is the perfect time to earn credits while experiencing

international cultures and learning different per-spectives of faculty and students from foreign coun-

tries. With the global-ization of the world econ-omy, an understanding of international busi-ness, trade, and jurisdiction has become essential for the modern lawyer. Why not consider adding a law-related experience to your resume’ that stands

out to employers and may open opportunities in an increasingly global world of law practice.

Each program is really different and each pro-vides amazing opportunities not just to visit for-eign countries but to live there, to learn about dif-ferent cultures, and to learn something about your-self.

All programs are organized to allow students to balance class work with time to explore and learn about the country.

Some of you are already captivated by one of these fascinating cities so why not add this learning experience to your knowledge base. Contact the Coordinator of International Pro-grams at 302-477-2248, by email at [email protected], or you can visit our website at http://law.widener.edu/summer
