A series of concerts performed by musicians from the Royal Academyof Music for parents and their babies. Each lasting 45 minutes, parentscan enjoy a programme of beautiful chamber music in a calm andaccommodating environment. Although the music will be appropriatefor babies, please note that these concerts are not interactive.

Workshop leader Natasha Zielazinski and young performers fromthe Guildhall School of Music & Drama present these popularmusic workshops for toddlers and their carers. Sessions includea short performance in the Auditorium and an interactiveworkshop in the Bechstein Room including singing, playingpercussion and a chance to meet the musicians and seetheir instruments close up.

Please note: These workshops are for parents/carersand their toddlers to make music together. Please avoidbringing younger siblings if at all possible.

JENNIFER VYVYAN AND THE WORLD OF ENGLISHSINGING IN THE MID-TWENTIETH CENTURYLed by critic and broadcaster Michael White, the chief authority onVyvyan, this study day will examine her career, her relationship withBritten, her complicated life – born into the landed gentry with anancient family seat, riddled with secrets – and look broadly at theworld of English singing to which she belonged. There will also bean exhibition based on a recently discovered cache of Vyvyan’spersonal effects, with a chance to view original letters, diaries,scores and other memorabilia relating to this extraordinary singer.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OFCOMMUNITY OUTREACHIn 1992 Midori established an organisation to bring musiceducation to deprived areas of New York. Over the pasttwo decades, Midori & Friends has reached out tothousands of underprivileged children and othersroutinely excluded from making music. The violinist’sinspirational outreach initiative harmonises with the aimsand objectives of Wigmore Hall Learning, which hasarranged a series of informal performances for Midori togive to local schools and community centres and relatedconcerts at Wigmore Hall. Midori also marks 20 years ofcommunity projects with a morning of masterclasses anda frank discussion of her outreach work.

Wigmore Hall was something of a second home to Benjamin Brittenduring his early career. The venue hosted the first performance ofthe student composer’s Holiday Diary in November 1934 and wenton to present a succession of landmark premières. Britten oftenappeared in recital at Wigmore Hall, playing celesta in a concertof new French music during the Second World War and regularlyperforming thereafter with his partner Peter Pears. The composeralso led a ‘concert-introduction’ to Peter Grimes at Wigmore Hallin May 1945.

Wigmore Hall’s Benjamin Britten Study Day, curated by thecomposer Julian Philips, offers personal recollections, expertanalysis and critical insights into the composer’s unique positionin 20th-century British music and his enduring influence ontoday’s composers, performers and audiences.

THE PIANO DUETS OF FRANZ SCHUBERTThe first Wigmore Study Group of the season is devoted to Schubert’sremarkable output of marches and dances, fantasies and sonatas forpiano duet, a genre that preoccupied the composer throughout his shortlife. Hosted by composer Julian Philips, participants will explore thisunique repertory over three afternoons, with live illustrations in WigmoreHall performed by postgraduate pianists from the Guildhall School ofMusic & Drama, together with lively contributions from distinguishedvisiting Schubertians. This study group culminates with Imogen Cooperand Paul Lewis’s piano duet recital on Thursday 13 December, aprogramme which features Schubert’s Grand Duo D812 of 1824 – a workwhich will provide a particular focus for this study group.

Series ticket price £53 including 3 study sessions and a ticket for theevening concert on 13 December.
