AN EXCERPT FROM THE JUNE, 2002 MAINSHEET ABOUT BILL TILDEN

One of the first great tennis players in our country's history was William (Bill) Tilden, II. In 1927, he played a tennis exhibition at the Bay head Yacht Club. His brother summered in Bay Head and Bill was a frequent visitor. That was the Year when the Board of Trustees elected Bill Tilden an Honorary Member as "a vote of thanks for his kindness playing exhibition tennis for the benefit of the BHYC.“

In 1931, Tilden played another exhibition for some 900 spectators. The day was proclaimed a great success by Tennis Chairman, Roland Haines, who reported the Club's share of the gross as $183.37.

Bill Tilden used his honorary membership in the Bay Head Yacht Club, and was a frequent visitor to the Club and its courts. Members remember his exclamation of "oh, rotten" each time he missed a shot!
