Bryan Y. Norton, SJ Newly ordained Jesuit

From Pupil to Priest: A Wildcat’s Jesuit Journey

Born and raised in Cleveland, Fr. Bryan Y. Norton, S.J., is the youngest of three children and the proud uncle of five nieces and nephews. His family and home parish (St. Basil the Great) instilled in him a strong sense of solidarity, faith, and service. Bryan met the Society of Jesus at St. Ignatius High School, where the vibrant tradition of Jesuit education left a profound mark. Eager to pursue a liberal arts education, he studied philosophy at Williams College in Massachusetts. There, through the bonds of friendship in an active Newman Center, Bryan had a deep experience of Christ and the Church. During an influential junior-year abroad at Oxford University, he reconnected with the Jesuits and began a journey of discernment that led him to the novitiate in 2008. As a novice, he worked extensively with adolescents at Loyola High School in Detroit. After professing first vows, he spent four years of studies in Saint Louis, including a Master’s degree in Classics (Latin and Greek) at Washington University. As a Jesuit regent, Bryan taught classical languages and literature at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Since the summer of 2016, he has lived in France, studying theology at Centre Sèvres, the Jesuit faculty of Paris. During these years abroad, Bryan has collaborated closely with the Brothers of Saint John of God in their care for the sick. As a deacon, he has served regularly at St. Ignatius Church in Paris and at St. Peter’s Church in Saint Denis. This summer, after ordination, he will spend a pastoral month at his home parish in Brecksville. In the fall, Bryan will return to Paris to complete his Licentiate in Sacred Theology. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Father Dave Halaiko The History of the Churches of Akron

Father Dave Halaiko will speak at the August 2, 2019 First Friday Club of Greater Akron on the topic The History of the Churches of Akron. Father Dave Halaiko was born in Akron, Ohio in 1941 He attended Catholic elementary and high schools, Borromeo College and St Mary Seminary. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1967. After serving at St Ann, Cleveland Hts, St Mark, Cleveland and St Paul, Akron, he was sent by Bishop James Hickey to establish a new parish, Nativity of the Lord Jesus, in Springfield Township. He retired in 2017 and is in residence at St Vincent, Akron. He has a licence for guiding in Israel and he has led pilgrimages there and to Italy, Greece and Turkey. He is the author of a guide book for Israel and coauthor with Mike Aquilina of an updated version of that guide book. He also created a photographic book of Akron area Catholic and Orthodox churches. He is a member of the Summit County Historical Society, Progress Through Preservation, The Cascade Locks Association and he was a member of the Cleveland Diocese Building Commission. The First Friday Club will meet August 2, 2019 at Tangier Restaurant, 532 W. Market Street, Akron OH 44303. The cost of the luncheon is $20.00 Doors open at 11:00 AM; the program begins at noon, and ends promptly at 1:00 PM. MMAUS: 2019 is the TWENTIETH annual retreat for LGBTQ Christians at Jesuit Retreat Center.

LUKE 24: 13-35 tells us that two of Jesus’ disciples met Him on the road to the village of Emmaus. The encounter renewed their hopes and sense of mission. LGBTQ Christians continue to meet Jesus as they journey to the Kingdom. The Emmaus retreat is a time to encounter Christ and to share the journey together.

Come and meet other LGBTQ men and women, supportive and knowledgeable religious and parents of gay children. Mingle with a friendly group in a structured and non-structured setting knowing that your privacy is important. Feel comfortable to celebrate and share your journey and outlook or listen to others in a fun, reflective and prayerful atmosphere. The Emmaus retreat will be facilitated by Sister Marian Durkin, C.S.A. and a planning team. Marian Durkin, C.S.A., one of the founders of the Emmaus Retreat, is a member of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine and is on the Leadership Team of her Congregation.

Fr. Steve Krupa, S.J. was born and raised in Detroit and has lived in Cambridge, MA, Cleveland, Berkeley, and Chicago. He entered the Jesuits (the Society of Jesus) at age 27 and has been a Jesuit for almost 42 years. He is a priest, university professor, and spiritual director.

His degrees include a B.A. in English, a Th.M. in Theology, a Master of Divinity, and a Ph.D. in Theology and Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. Fr. Steve’s doctoral dissertation topic was "Dorothy Day and Nonviolence." Fr. Steve has taught theology and spirituality for over 24 years at the University of Detroit, Boston College, John Carroll University, and Loyola University Chicago. He is currently the superior of two Jesuit communities, and in Fall 2019 he will commence a new program in Chicago and Milwaukee that will train lay people, primarily, to give the complete Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Hobbies include swimming, biking, hiking and working out, singing, photography, and travel. He has traveled in over 20 countries, including Australia, China, Turkey, India, Africa and Palestine.

Situated on 57-acres of woods, meadow, and walking trails Jesuit Retreat Center is an ideal location to meet, share and grow.
