WILDWINGS THAILAND ‘SPOON-BILLED PITTA’ TOUR 2013 ITINERARY AND HIGHLIGHTS – Leaders - Mark Andrews & Yotin Meerkaeow Weds 6 th February – The group arrived early morning in Bangkok where we met and then drove two and half hours with a stop for change into field gear before arriving at Pak Thale Saltpans. Fabulous views of at least four Spoon-billed Sandpipers including one down to fifteen metres over the next two hours or so. Drove south to Laem Pak Bia calling in to check the roosting waders with Two Nordmann’s Greenshank and five Grey-headed Lapwing the highlights. Lunch at a beach restaurant and our first of many superb Thai meals, and of course rest and shade from the midday heat. Early afternoon we checked the Abandoned Building pools before moving on to the Kings Project for an afternoon session with Ruddy- breasted Crake, Slaty-breasted Rail, Pin-tailed and Painted Snipe all vying for attention. Late afternoon drove south to our hotel in Cha Am.

ITINERARY AND HIGHLIGHTS – Leaders - Mark Andrews & Yotin Meerkaeow

Weds 6th February – The group arrived early morning in Bangkok where we metand then drove two and half hours with a stop for change into field gear beforearriving at Pak Thale Saltpans. Fabulous views of at least four Spoon-billedSandpipers including one down to fifteen metres over the next two hours or so.Drove south to Laem Pak Bia calling in to check the roosting waders with TwoNordmann’s Greenshank and five Grey-headed Lapwing the highlights. Lunch at abeach restaurant and our first of many superb Thai meals, and of course rest andshade from the midday heat. Thurs 7th February – Early departure and drive north to Laem Pak Bia for aneight o’clock boat trip to Laem Pak Bia sandspit. All the target species found withrelative ease with Chinese Egret, Malaysian and White-faced Plover all being seenvery well. Back from the boat trip, we again visited the nearby saltpans andmanaged to locate the main roosting group of Nordmann’s Greenshank with atleast forty individuals involved and with an additional bonus of twenty four AsianDowitchers together on the same pool. Broke for lunch, again at our usual beachrestaurant. After lunch drove north and then west, visiting the Wat Khao Takraoand Norng Pai Lai pools and ricefields seeing a variety of birds including storksand raptors plus both species of Jacana. Early evening back in Cha Am.

Friday 8th February – Back to Pak Thale saltpans early morning, again seeingSpoon-billed Sandpipers, this time five plus an additional bonus of a Black-napedTern in the Common Tern roost. Concentrated on the roosting curlew finding Far-eastern Curlew, again with relative ease. Moved on to a nearby temple areagathering a nice group of Oriental Pratincole, Oriental Skylark and Yellow Bitternbefore midday. Back to our favoured beach location for lunch before movingsouth checking various freshwater wetlands before another temple visit, this timethe wonderful ‘boat temple’, A leisurely search reveals Indian Nightjar, SpottedOwlet, Coppersmith Barbet and several other dry country species. Early eveningback to Cha Am.

Sat 9th February – Five am departure for Kaeng Krachan National Park and thecooler forest, arriving at the entrance gate just after six. Chinese New Year hasstarted so delays for the vehicles allows us nice views of Large-tailed Nightjar.Drove into the park slowly, stopping at the streams for a quick look and to admirethe wonderful roosting pair of White-faced Scops Owls. Continued onward andupward to the top camp, where, whilst consuming breakfast we managed anumber of the ‘upper’ specialities including fabulous views of the unique Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Streaked Spiderhunter and various barbets. Explored the final fewkilometers of track before returning to camp for lunch. Birding from the terrace, awonderful variety of birds were seen including desired Wreathed Hornbill , BlackBaza, various flowerpeckers, and leafbirds etc. Afternoon walked down gainingsome difficult specialities, White-hooded Babbler, Black-throated Laughingthrush,White-browed Scimitar Babbler but sadly no Long-tailed Broadbill as the road wasnow getting both busy and noisy due to Chinese New Year visitors. Rejoined thevehicles and slow descent seeing a diverse number of birds, sadly often fleetinglythough a group of Bar-backed Partridge welcome, Continued on back to theentrance stopping off at the main drinking pools and getting fabulous views of adrinking Great-eared Nightjar. Out after dark and on to our overnight at BanMaka.

Sun 10th February – Early start and back into Kaeng Krachan NP before dawndriving slowly to the streams area. Spent the morning searching out species but

the park was now rather busy making things a little difficult. Highlights includednesting Rusty-cheeked Hornbills, displaying Great Slaty Woodpeckers, Crimson-winged Woodpecker plus a variety of passerines. Lunch at Bang Krang Camp anda fruiting tree providing further additions to the list before our imminentdeparture back to Bangkok and our flight south to Krabi late afternoon. Arrivedsafely and on time, transferred to the revamped Morakot for resort our firstovernight in the south.

Mon 11th February – Early departure to the nearby Khao Nor Chuchi reserve,and a very pleasant, although often hot morning’s birding targeting the Pittas.Fabulous views of a male Banded Pitta for over an hour was the undoubtedhighlight, though sadly the Gurney’s were not calling and could not be located.Back to Morakot for lunch before an afternoon into early evening sessions birdingstill failed to locate a Gurney’s Pitta but scored handsomely with stunning viewsof Black-and-Yellow Broadbill and Rufous-backed Kingfisher and then after dark, afabulous Gould’s Frogmouth, a roosting Ruddy Kingfisher and a quite incrediblecalling Oriental Bay Owl. Back to Morakot tired but very happy.

Tues 12th February – Again out early for a morning’s session looking forGurney’s again drawing a blank, but the ever-increasing bird tally continues witha variety of species being added at a rate of knots. Back to Morakot for lunch andthen, as the storm clouds rolled in, departure for a three hour journey across theThai peninsular to the east coast and destination Krunching Falls National Park.Arrived at Krunching for the last hour or so of light and the rain finally stoppingenough to go birding. Great views of a Wallace’s Hawk-eagle sat in an open tree,a brief Blyth’s Frogmouth and Brown Hawk Owl probably the highlights. At dusk,drove to our hotel as the rain clouds again rolled in.

Weds 13th February - Early start for a days birding in Krunching Falls NationalPark where new species came thick and fast, and that was before we’d started towalk the trails. A plethora of babblers and woodpeckers filled our day, with greatviews of some tricky species, Fluffy-backed Tit-babbler and Black-throatedBabbler, Maroon and Banded Woodpecker personal favourites, A Great ArgusPheasant calling was tempting, a quick whistle from a Rail Babbler even more so,but neither would respond. Lunch in the field was slightly delayed for a roostingBrown Wood Owl, Scarlet-rumped Trogon and a few other goodies before wetracked back mid-afternoon to revisit the fabulous male Blyth’s Frogmouth on itsnest and frame filling views of the nearby roosting female. Departed lateafternoon for the long drive back to Krabi for our final nights stay in Thailand.

Thurs 14th February – Early morning found us on the Krabi mangrove walkwaystaring at a calling Mangrove Pitta before a boat trip out through the mangrovesand onto the mudflats. Highlights in the former, Brown-winged Kingfishers and aquartet of the fabulous Black-and-Red Broadbill and the latter, some ‘missing’

shorebirds, Terek Sandpiper, Turnstone as well as three more Nordmann’sGreenshank. Back to dock in the increasing midday heat and a welcome lunch ata nearby restaurant. The afternoon was spent at various forest localities aroundKrabi gaining a few more species for the burgeoning list including everything fromGold-whiskered Barbet, Silver-rumped Needletails and a group of LargeWoodshrike. Back to Krabi town for a clean-up and repack before it was back toKrabi Airport for our onward flight to Bangkok and then on to London on theovernight flight.

Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata - Good numbers on the mud flats, 653 atthe roost at Pak Thale on 08/02.

Far-eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis – One bird at least roostingwith the Eurasian Curlew at Pak Thale on 08/02

Bronze-winged Jacana Metopidius indicus – Several in stunning plumage in theWKT area 08/02.

Pheasant-tailed Jacana Hydrophasianus chirugus – Small numbers, in non-breeding plumage around the WKT area on 08/02

Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropus - Commonly seen, often in good numbersin select and favoured areas around LPB/PT.

Common Redshank Tringa totanus – Small numbers observed close to KrabiMangroves on the 14/02

Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis - Commonly seen often in very goodnumbers in group feeding frenzies on suitable pools around LPB/PT 06-08/02.

Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia - Commonly seen.

Nordmann's Greenshank Tringa guttifer - Good views were obtained with amaximum count of around 42 birds together at LPB/PT on 07/02 with 2 birds theprevious day. 3 birds at Krabi Mangroves area on 14/02

Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus - One in the LPB/PT area on 08/02.

Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola - Commonly seen, especially around Laem PakBia pans 06-08/02.

Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus – Good numbers at Krabi mudflats on 14/02.

Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos - Small numbers throughout.

Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres – Small numbers on the Krabi mudflats on14/02

Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris - At least 800 -1200 birds in Laem Pak Bia area,the key to finding Nordmann's.

Red Knot Calidris canutus - Probably around a fifty birds intermixed with themain roosting flocks at Laem Pak Bia./Pak Thale between 06-08/02 some withadvancing breeding plumage.

Ruff Philomachus pugnax - Fifteen to twenty birds in the general Laem Pak Biaarea throughout the period.

Oriental Skylark Alauda gulgula - A few birds on the traditional patch behind thetemple near Pak Thale on 08/02

Eastern Yellow Wagtail Motacilla tschutschensis - Observed in small numbersin suitable habitat.

Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea – One KK on 10/02.

House Sparrow Passer domesticus – Observed regularly at the beginning of thetour.

Plain-backed Sparrow Passer flaveolus - A small number of this rather smartlooking social sparrow were seen in the LPB/PT and WKT areas.

Eurasian Tree Sparrow Passer montanus - Commonly recorded.

Baya Weaver Ploceus philippinus - A good year for this species with severalhundred birds in foraging parties in the WKT area on 07/02.

Lyle's Flying Fox Pteropus lylei - There is a very large roost in the mangroves atLaem Pak Bia.

Water Monitor Varanus salvator – Regularly seen at the Kings Project, also onthe mangroves and sandspit at Laem Pak Bia.

Tokay Gecko Gekko gecko – Regularly seen and heard in forested areas.

Malayan Giant Toad Bufo asper – Several around the bar area at Krunching on12/02
