Finding that best Job for the Spring by Sheryl Krase

Finding a job is easier said than done. While you may know to submit a profes‐sional résumé, write a thoughtful cover letter and practice before an interview, sometimes you still don't get the job.

While every job-search experience is dif‐ferent, it's helpful to hear from others who are in or have been in the same boat as you. Here, experts and past job seek‐ers share some of their best advice for landing your dream role:

Practice makes perfect

"Be very careful how you answer ques‐tions in a job interview. You always want to be truthful, but it's best to practice your answers, as most websites suggest. I failed to do this prior to my "rst inter‐view, and when I was asked what job I'd done that I was most proud of, I actually answered, 'Being a mother.' While this is true, it was de"nitely not the best answer I could have given and certainly not the one the interviewer was looking for. Do your homework on the companies you plan to interview with, and anticipate the kinds of questions they might ask. Come up with answers that will be both honest and impressive." -- Margaret Miller, writ‐

er and editor at e Lyndon Baines John‐

son Foundation

Don't let bad news get you down

"Don't listen to the doom and gloom that you hear in the news. People are get‐ting jobs every day, and companies are growing, even in a down economy. I say this as a business owner, whose biggest challenge over the past year has been "nding quality help. I have also seen it with other local business owners who are looking to hire. I believe that people get an idea that there are no jobs because of all the negativity they hear about the job numbers in the media, so they buy into that and give up, while others go for it and "nd great jobs, regardless of the eco‐nomic indicators." -- Anthony Kirlew,

founder and CEO of AKA Internet Mar‐

keting

Find what makes you passionate

"If you don't focus your job search on something you are passionate about, you won't stand out enough. Your network‐ing, your résumé and your interviews all have to show a spark to get attention, es‐pecially in a tight economy. e good news is it's a great time to tap into what you love and then match that to the job market. It's possible and essential." -- Val

Nelson, career and business coach

Show how you add value

"Figure out what value you can provide. Your credentials and your past are nice but secondary. I am glad you think you are great, but it's of little consequence to me. Convince me that my future is better with you than without you. Value, value, value -- that's where it is at. Once you know the value you provide, make it clear in your résumé, cover letter and in‐terview." -- Ann Latham, president of

consulting and business-services company Uncommon Clarity

Network, network, network

"Network with all kinds of people for useful market information, not just in‐formation about speci"c job openings or companies that are known to be hiring. Learn about the larger world and envi‐ronment." --Tammy Gooler Loeb, career

and executive coach at Tammy Gooler

Loeb Coaching & Consulting

Stay positive

"Positivity and persistence are key. Stay optimistic throughout the process and keep going until you achieve your goal." -- Lynda Zugec, managing director of e

Workforce Consultants

Stand out from the crowd

"Every candidate is punctual, responsible and gets on well with people. To avoid blending in with the crowd, highlight unique elements of your personal brand. For example, a candidate listed an around-the-world trip she took in col‐lege as an educational experience. When we read that, we had to hear the story, so she got an interview and eventually a job. Don't skip or gloss over the cover letter. is is your opportunity to make a personal impression and connection. A résumé is just a list of facts about you, but the cover letter gives a hiring agent

insight into your personality. We hire people, not résumés.

"Salespeople learn to translate features into bene"ts. When you are trying to sell yourself, you should do the same. A fea‐ture is a fact about you -- experience, skills, education, etc. A bene"t is why we should care. is requires some thought and customization of your résumé to each position you seek, but it is worth the effort. Casting a wide net by sending hundreds of generic résumés is largely wasted time. Instead, target a few posi‐tions for which you are well-suited at companies you admire. Customize and plan your approach. Connect to people who already work where you want to work through social media l ike LinkedIn, attend networking events for the industry and leverage your personal connections. Even a small connection can oen get you past the "rst paper cut or get your résumé the second glance it deserves." -- Matt Meuleners, executive

partner at professional training and

coaching company FOCUS Training

Business Sense with Elizabeth Flowers Editor

Last week, Scoop.it released the official #leancontent framework. e lean con‐tent ideology addresses the issue of knowing a content strategy is necessary but not having enough money to send a man into space a la RedBull; content strategy for the rest of us, if you will. ere are many components of develop‐ing a successful and impacting lean con‐tent strategy, including testing different types of content, repurposing content for various platforms, building a community contribution program, and curating ex‐isting content.

Working with a lean content methodolo‐gy for almost an entire year has allowed me to discover many useful tools to en‐sure that your content comes with both the lowest cost and highest impact possi‐ble, and I’d like to share some of them with you.

Buffer

Buffer is every digital marketer’s dream. It’s a tool that allows you to pick times during the day that you want your social media posts to be sent out and, once you’ve found your content, does all the work for you. Buffer isn’t your average scheduling app, though. Once you’ve "g‐ured out the best times to post on social media, you set these times just once, in‐stead of having to schedule each of your posts. If you install the bookmarklet or browser extension, all you have to do is click on it, and the piece of content you’re looking will automatically be sent out at the next available time slot. Per‐sonally, I spend 30 minutes each morn‐ing curating the content that I’ll be shar‐ing on social media that day, sending it into my Buffer, and using the extra 5 minutes to enjoy a coffee.

SlideShare

ere are so many aspects of SlideShare that make it lean. For one, it’s a great platform to use to share visual content, which is arguably the leanest of all. It’s shareable, repurposable, and easily di‐gestible. Not only can you post presenta‐tions on SlideShare, but you can also share infographics, PDF documents, and even videos. Even if this platform isn’t

the only place you’re posting your con‐tent, you can leverage its existing – and notably large – community as an addi‐tional distribution network.

Ask Your Target Market

People love numbers. It’s one thing to make a claim, but it’s a whole different ballgame when there are real statistics involved. Ask Your Target Market has three product levels that can help you gather statistics and data, whether it be for market research or compelling con‐tent. e "rst, and most lean, level is an expert to cra your survey, an audience (de"ned by your parameters) to take the survey, and the tools to create it. e sec‐ond level allows you to use the creation tools and audience gathering while you write your own survey, and the third simply allows you to create a survey and administer it to whomever you wish. e leanest thing about AYTM is that it’s ex‐tremely targeted and allows you to de"ne exactly what you want to "nd out before you even begin, eliminating wasted time siing through data to "nd something that might be compelling to your audi‐ence.

Five Second Test

One of the biggest time-wasters that comes with website and content creation is deciding on the best layout. Everyone has their opinion; put this here, put that there. Lean marketers, though, don’t have the time to spend arguing which side of the page that tiny button should be on. Five Second Test is a quick & dirty way to "nd out how potential audi‐ences will react to your site and/or page within the "rst "ve seconds of seeing it. Just upload your mockup, set the target demographics and a few things you want to "nd out from the viewers, and within minutes you’ll have responses and know what worked and what didn’t. When it comes down to it, readers aren’t going to stay on your site for longer than "ve sec‐onds if their attention isn’t caught, so don’t waste your time guessing what will do the trick – "nd out in real time.

Scoop.it

Scoop.it is a content curation platform that allows you to share content on your topic of expertise. Creating original con‐tent is an integral part of any successful content strategy, but it’s not easy to be doing this multiple times per day. If you want to stay visible and top of mind to your audience, you need to be putting

Page 9: Will county times march 13

9Will County Times

out information in the form of digital content and social media posts consis‐tently throughout the day and the week. Pairing curation with your content cre‐ation strategy is a lean way to "ll the gaps between original pieces of content created by your brand. Scoop.it contains a suggestion engine which takes away the pain of having to search the internet for relevant content to share – instead, all of the content on your topic is right in front of you. en, in one click, you can publish a link to this content along with your insight (for context) and send it to all of your social networks. In the pro‐cess, you’re not only staying visible to your audience, but you’re becoming a thought leader as well!

Visual.ly

Visual.ly is a great lean content market‐ing tool in a way similar to that of SlideShare. It’s a place to host your info‐graphics and leverage another existing community to share your content with. Further, using Visual.ly will remind you and your content team to focus on visual content and create it as oen as you can. Some tips for lean infographics include not thinking too much about fancy graphics, separating statistics clearly so that it’s easy for the reader to share them, and organizing the infographic into easi‐

ly shareable sections that can exist with‐out the other ones (hello, repurposing!).

Studio

If you have a phone and are a digital or social content manager, you need to download Studio. It’s a photography app that’s set up similarly to Instagram, but is more design-focused. With Studio, you can upload a base image to start, and then overlay text, effects, or pre-existing designs on the simple mobile interface. It’s like a stripped version of Photoshop to go! Personally, I’ve used Studio to cre‐ate content at my desk, on the bus, or walking to get lunch. It’s that simple – and remains engaging and informative.

Augustine , Noah lead Bulls past Pistons 105-94

From the Ap News

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- e Chicago Bulls didn't get a great night from their starters Wednesday. eir backups made sure they didn't need one.

Reserves D.J. Augustin and Taj Gibson combined for 48 points on 18-of-30 shooting as the Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons 105-94 for their "h win in six games. e Bulls only led by one point going into the fourth, but Augustin and Gibson had 20 of Chicago's 34 in the fourth.

''A lot of guys are stepping up on this team right now,'' Gibson said. ''Everyone is working hard and helping in whatever way we need. e guys are just focused on the team right now.''

Both coaches went with seven-man rota‐tions for most of the game, but Chicago's duo completely outmatched Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum. ey "nished with 12 points on 5-of-20 shooting, in‐cluding a 1-for-11 night from Bynum.

''Will played his heart out, just like he al‐ways does,'' Pistons coach John Loyer

said. ''He gives us everything he's got ev‐ery night, but there are going to be some games where the ball just rolls off the rim. ey've got two very good players coming off the bench - Gibson has done that all year for them and Augustin has been like that since he got to Chicago.''

Joakim Noah "nished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for his sixth ca‐reer triple-double, including two in the last three games and three in the last month, while Jimmy Butler had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Wed, Mar 5, 2014

Chicago105FinalDetroit94

''Jo's our leader, and a triple-double is nothing to him,'' Butler said. ''We are starting to expect that from him. He does so many things well that it makes it easier for the rest of us.''

Greg Monroe led Detroit with 27 points, but the Pistons struggled all night to get anything going from the outside. ey took 34 shots from outside the paint, and only hit nine (26.5 percent), including 2-of-11 on 3-pointers. In contrast, the Bulls hit 46.7 percent from outside.

''ey hit shots, especially in the fourth quarter, and they picked up their intensi‐ty on defense,'' Loyer said. ''We didn't match that, and when you do that against a playoff team, you aren't going to win many games.''

Detroit led for most of the second quar‐ter, but appeared to get rattled by an offi‐

cial's decision. Smith was driving for a

layup that would have made it 43-34, but the shot was blocked by Mike Dunleavy. Smith didn't get back on defense, staying near the basket to argue the call, and Jimmy Butler got an easy alley-oop dunk at the other end.

Smith was then called for a technical, and Augustin hit the free throw to make it a four-point game.

Chicago scored the next four points to tie the game, and a technical called on Loyer with 3.7 seconds le in the half helped the Bulls take a 52-47 lead at the intermission.

e Pistons narrowed the gap to 71-70 in the third quarter, but Augustin and Gibson kept scoring off the bench to help Chicago stay in front. Augustin's three-point play early in the fourth keyed an 11-2 run to start the period, putting the Bulls up by 10.

''We talk about how we want to "nish games, and we were real strong coming out for the fourth,'' Chicago coach Tom ibodeau said. ''Our defense was strong, and our ball movement was good. Hitting the open guy makes a big difference.''

Augustin wasn't "nished, either. His 3-pointer gave the Bulls a 15-point lead with six minutes to go, and the Pistons never threatened down the stretch.

''ey just outplayed us in the fourth quarter,'' Andre Drummond said. ''ey are a very disciplined team that prides it‐self on defense. We hung with them for three quarters, but they ran their offense in the fourth quarter and outexecuted us.''

NOTES: Loyer's technical at the end of the "rst was called in a highly unusual manner. Loyer was discussing a call with official Olandis Poole, who showed no indication of calling anything, but John Goble rang him up from 30 feet away. ... Gibson and Brandon Jennings picked up technicals arguing calls in the second half. Gibson le the game with 3:39 to play aer rolling his right ankle, but re‐turned moments later. ... IndyCar cham‐

pion Scott Dixon was honored during the "rst half as part of a promotion for the Detroit Grand Prix.

Hawks quiet at Trade Deadline From the Ap News

Jasen Vinlove/USA TODAY SportsKris Versteeg has been a solid pickup for the Blackhawks since joining the team in November.CHICAGO -- e Chicago Blackhawks stood pat on the "nal day of NHL trading on Wednesday.

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bow‐

man said Saturday he didn’t anticipate making any moves in the "nal trading days, but he did end up moving prospect Brandon Pirri to theFlorida Panthers for dra picks on Sunday and acquired de‐fensemen David Rundblad and Mathieu Brisebois from the Phoenix Coyotes for a second-round dra pick on Monday.

“We were not looking to do anything to‐day,” Bowman said aer the deadline passed on Wednesday aernoon. “I talked over the weekend that we made our big move earlier when we got Kris Versteeg and we’ve made some other mi‐nor moves in between. We actually were excited to acquire David Rundblad yes‐terday, but we weren’t looking to do any‐thing else.

“With the way the cap situation is this year, every team is tight against the cap so in order to make moves you’re going to have trade money away, and we don’t have any players that we want to trade away. We’ve really accomplished a lot over the last couple of seasons with the group we have here, and we’re not look‐

ing to break it apart and try to bring in new players. If we can add to it, which we’ve been doing all year, by not trading away roster players from here that was always our objective.”

e Blackhawks did pull the trigger on a number of trades throughout this season which have given them NHL players. ey added Versteeg from the Panthers in November. ey traded for forward Peter Regin from the New York Islanders in February. Rundblad joined the Black‐hawks for practice on Wednesday.

Aside from the few new faces, the Black‐hawks are planning to make another run for the Stanley Cup with pretty much the same team they had last season. Nine‐teen players on this season’s team were part of last year’s Stanley Cup champi‐onship team.

Bowman said he believed his current team could repeat as Stanley Cup cham‐

pions.

“at’s what we’re always focused on,” Bowman said. “No. 1, short term, we have to "nish the season strong here. Can’t get ahead of yourselves because it’s a competitive division and conference we’re in. at’s where our focus is right now; can’t look too far down the road.

“ere are a lot of components to our team similar to a year ago. Some of the younger players are better now than a year ago, and that’s exciting to see. We haven’t had any guys drop off and lose their talent the last six months. We have a group that understands what it takes to

win, but you have to go out there and do it. We don’t take anything for granted. We expect to play hard next game and not get ahead of ourselves.”

Bowman said the Blackhawks weren’t in‐volved in talks for any of the bigger names at the deadline.

“No, we were never in any of that,” Bow‐

man said. “I always chuckle when I see the reports that we’re close to getting [some big names.] at’s the world we live in today. In order to do those things, you’d have to trade players away that are effective contributors to your team. Dif‐ferent this year with the salary cap being lower than it’s been in recent years. It causes you have to trade money to add money. We believe in our group here.”

"Mas"---e Paintings of Caryn Carew Diaz

Caryn Carew Diaz says painting is her passion. She paints for herself. She paints full time, exhausting herself each day but the next morning is ready to paint again. And when she has had a really good day of painting, she dances. She strives for "Mas", the Spanish word for "More". More emotion, more work, more quality, more beauty. "Mas" will be on exhibit March 13-April14 at Gallery 7, 116 N. Chicago St. Suite 102 in downtown

Joliet. A reception to meet Caryn Carew Diaz will be held Saturday March 15 from 6-8pm. e public is cordially in‐vited to attend both the reception and exhibit.

Caryn has developed her natural talent through the years since childhood, doing landscape design, sculpture, and paint‐ing. She prefers to paint in black and white rather than in color, loving the contrast of black and white and blending to every shade of gray. Diaz believes women encompass so much beauty, physically and in their souls, so they are her favorite subjects. She represents them in a pop-art style, expressing emo‐tions which she hopes might open a con‐

versation among viewers and bring peo‐ple together. "I would like people to feel what I feel when I see things and "nd joy in my work."

As an unusual and fun added attraction to "Mas", Caryn plans a "You Name It" challenge. She is purposely leaving one of her paintings untitled and encourages the public to engage with her art by sub‐mitting their ideas to name the painting during the 6-8pm reception at Gallery 7 on Saturday March 15. e winning title will receive a Gallery 7 gi certi"cate.

Celebrating its 7th year of bringing ex‐citing art to Joliet and the southwest sub‐urbs, Gallery 7 is a partnership if local

artists and is located at 116 N. Chicago St. Suite 102 in downtown Joliet next to the historic Rialto eater. All artwork at Gallery7 is for sale. Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restric‐tions on eating and drinking alcohol are lied for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.
