Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, to William H. Gates Sr.and Mary Maxwell Gates, of English, German, and Scotch-Irishdescent. His family was upper middle class; his father was aprominent lawyer, his mother served on the board of directors forFirst Interstate BancSystem and the United Way, and her father,

J. W. Maxwell, was a national bank president. Gates has one eldersister, Kristi (Kristianne),and one younger sister, Libby. He wasthe fourth of his name in his family, but was known as WilliamGates III or "Trey" because his father had dropped his own "III"suffix. Early on in his life, Gates' parents had a law career in mindfor him.

First computing experienceFirst computing experience

At 13 he enrolled in the Lakeside School, an exclusive preparatoryschool. When he was in the eighth grade, the Mothers Club at theschool used proceeds from Lakeside School's rummage sale to buyan ASR-33 teletype terminal and a block of computer time on aGeneral Electric (GE) computer for the school's students. Gates

took an interest in programming the GE system in BASIC and wasexcused from math classes to pursue his interest. He wrote hisfirst computer program on this machine: an implementation oftic-tac-toe that allowed users to play games against the computer.Gates was fascinated by the machine and how it would alwaysexecute software code perfectly.

Gates joined Harvard in 1973.In Harvard, he meet with hisfuture business partner SteveBallmer, whom he later appointed

as CEO of Microsoft. Gates andSteve spent most of their time on

popular in computer hobbyists.After the success of the product

they decided to start their ownsoftware company. He had talkedthis decision over with hisparents, who were supportive ofhim after seeing how much Gateswanted to start a company.

Gates and Paul Allen work with each other in MITS inAlbuquerque. In November 1975 they decided to work inpartnership. They named their partnership Micro-soft andhad their first office located in Albuquerque. In 1980, IBM approached Microsoft to write thebasic interpreter for its upcoming personalcomputer IBM PC. When IBMs representativementioned that they needed an operating

system, Gates referred them to digital researchmakers of the widely used CP\M operatingsystem. But they did not reach the licenseagreement then IBM go back to the Gates and

few week after Gates proposed 86-DOS (QDOS),an operating system similar to the CP\M. Afterthe check Gates deliver it to IBM as PC-DOS inexchange for a one time fee of$50,000.
