WILLIAM JARRATT/JARED, REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER

William Jarratt/Jared was a Revolutionary War soldier of Loudoun Co., Virginia and a Tennessee pioneer

that settled in Tennessee prior to statehood, June 1, 1796.  He was born 3 June 1758 in Kingwood, New

Jersey,  probably  at  the  Old  Quaker  Colony  of  Hunterdon, Co.  where  his  maternal  grandparents  John  &

Naomi  Hulme  Whitacre  lived.    He  was  the  son  of  John  Jared  and  Hannah  Whitacre.    John  Jared had  a

wagon­making business in Loudoun Co., Virginia, in the very northern tip of the state where Maryland is

pierced  almost  to  the  Pennsylvania  line.    When  William  was  just  a  boy  his  mother  died  on  the  8th  of

November 1765 and his father was left with three children to raise on his own, William, Joseph and Naomi

Jared.  His father remarried a young 18 year old girl named Rachel Palmer on 23 August 1767.

John, William and Joseph are listed in the Loudoun Co., Virginia tithables for both 1778 & 1779 proving

their residence during the Revolutionary War. The backwoods people of Virginia were fiercely patriotic to

the cause  of  freedom and  independent government.   When  the war  for  independence came  in William’s

young manhood, he was torn between the Quaker leanings of his mother’s family and his duty to the home

and county he had helped his father wrest from rugged nature.  The peaceful Quaker religion allowed no

participation in war for any reason.  Now the Jared home was threatened and John and his two oldest sons,

William and Joseph, marched away to defend it.  John Jared kept an account book and there is one page in

the book devoted to transactions with his son, William.  The entries read: “In yr. 1781 by work done by him

(William) at home – I went to camp.” and In 1782, “By guarding the prisoners at Winchester.”  In the book

Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, 1775­1783 by John H. Gwathmey, on page 414 there is

a soldier listed as, William Jarret, Loudoun Militia, listed as the same in the book List of the Revolutionary

Soldiers of Virginia by H. J. Eckenrode, Archivist, page 239.

William Jared married Anne Elizabeth “Besty” Roulston/Raulston on 2 December 1792, in Jefferson Co.,

Tennessee  (prior  to  statehood).    She  was  born  6  January  1770,  Bedford  Co.,  VA,  the  daughter  of

Revolutionary War patriot Matthew Raulston (1742­1800) & Martha Moore (1744­1806).  William and his

bride  settled  on  property  located  near  Buffalo  Valley  in  Jackson  Co.,  (now  11th  Dist.,  Putnam  Co.)

Tennessee.   They raised nine children, Moses, Martha, Naomi, Joseph, Ruth, William, Samuel, John and

Matthew Jared.  William Jared died on 22 September 1827 at his homestead.  His wife Anne Elizabeth died

18 June 1835 at the same residence and they are both buried  in the William Jared cemetery, resting  in  a

quiet country setting where the sounds of Indian Creek, rustling leaves and singing birds are found.

Moses Jared (1794­1827) md Malinda Byrne (1800­1881), d/o William Byrne & Rhoda England.   Rhoda

lived  to  be  104  yrs.  old,  everyone  called  her  “Granny  Byrne".    Martha  “Patsy”  Jared  (1795­1832)  md

Lawrence  Byrne  (1798­1854),  brother  of  Martha.    Naomi  Jared  (1797­1876)  md  John  Simmons  (1790­

1868), brother of  Jane Simmons who md Col.  James  Raulston,  s/o Matthew Raulston & Martha Moore.

Joseph Jared (1800­1885) md 1st Dorcas Byrne (1803­1833), d/o William Byrne & Rhoda England  – md

2nd Rachel Rhea Ray (1810­1891), d/o Joseph Ray & Kessiah Hensley.  Ruth Shamblin Jared (1802­1878)

md Martin Brown.  Rev. William Jared, Jr. (1805­1861) md Martha Phillips Jett (1815­1896), d/o John Jett

& Martha White.  William Jared Jr. was a Methodist minister in the days of the Circuit Riders and lived in

Sparta, TN.    Samuel  Raulston  Jared  (1807­1883)  md  Mary  Sophroni  “Susan”  Scruggs  (1812­1877),  d/o

Archibald Scruggs & Sara Nunally.   John Jared (1811­1896) md Ann Carr/Kerr (1812­1900), d/o Joseph

Henry Carr & Naomi Jared.  John & Ann lived in the 11th Civil Dist., Putnam Co., TN and are buried in the

John and Ann Carr Jared Cemetery across the road from the William Jared Cemetery. Matthew Raulston

Jared (1813­1847) never married.

On  the  20th  of  October  2007 a  dedication  was  held  at  the William  Jared Cemetery  after  a  full  clean­up,

repaired  tombstones  and  a  fence  was  installed.    The  community  worked  together  on  the  project,  funds,

planning and  the physical  labor of  love  brought a positive  result.   Special attention to  the clean­up work

was performed by Robert Shanks, Ted Huddleston and his sons, Donnie & Gary.  A historical entrance sign

that had been commissioned by Audrey June (Denny) Lambert & Jean Allen Hudson was unveiled by Jean

as an appropriate talk was given by Audrey.  The sign is cast aluminum, doubled sided with the names and

dates  of  the  people  known  buried  in  the  cemetery  on  one  side  and  William  Jarratt/Jared’s  dates  and

Revolutionary service shown on the other side with the official NSDAR insignia.   The sign was made by

Sewah Studios of Marietta, OH and was installed by Michael Henry Lambert and Ted Huddleston.

A large audience of over 100 people attended this event on the farm of Robert Anderson Shanks.  Seventy

one years had gone by since a crowd of descendants gathered to pay tribute to their ancestors buried in this

cemetery that includes the families of the Jareds, Dennys, Byrnes, Edmonds and others that have not been

identified.  Over 44 field stones and pieces of broken markers were found marking at least up to 60 more

graves.  The last time a gathering was held at this cemetery was in May of 1936 when descendants of John

(1737­aft.1804),  William  &  Joseph  Jared  (1760­1848)  honored  the  memory  of  their  ancestors  of  the

Revolutionary War and gave tribute to William & Joseph Jared who were prominent pioneer residents of

what  is now  Putnam  County.      Members  of  several  NSDAR  chapters and  descendants  of  William  Jared

were on hand for the October 2007 dedication.  Participators were Ann Miriam Shanks Gwaltney NSDAR

French  Lick Chapter,  Nashville,  her  sister  Naomi  Carolyn  Shanks  Huddleston,  Claude  Ann  Huddleston

Burton NSDAR Old Walton Road Chapter, Cookeville, & Maurine Ensor Patton, all g/g/g granddaughters

of William Jared & Audrey June Denny Lambert, NSDAR Stoney Creek Chapter, Rochester, MI, g/g/g/g

granddaughter of William Jared. Vice President General NSDAR, TN Martha Elizabeth Summers Willis,

Harold  Ralph  Maynard,  Marissa  Zoe  &  Jamie  Casey  McBurnett,  Charlene  Ann Thomas  Wanser  led  the

singing  of  “Gathering  Flowers  for  the  Master’s  Bouquet”  &  the  Veterans  Honor  Guard members, Terry

Notes: VETERAN HONOR GUARDAl William  joined the Veteran Honor Guard in 1999.  He  is a Navy veteran who saw service during theKorean Conflict.  He is a past commander of VFW Post 6277 in Monterey. Earl Richardson served withthe Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict.  He is a past commander of VFW Post 6296 inCookeville, TN. Terry Johnson, commander of the Veterans Honor Guard has served as commander ofthe unit since May 2007.  He is an Army veteran who saw service in Korea and Vietnam.  He joined theunit in January 2006 and regularly participates in more than 100 funerals a year.   He is a  life member ofVeterans of Foreign Wars Post 6277 in Monterey, where he serves as  the post’s  junior vice  commander.Greg Nead is a Navy veteran who saw service during the Korean Conflict.  He also serves as commanderof American Legion Post 135 in Cookeville. Roy Tudor is an Army veteran who saw service during theBerlin crisis.   He joined the Honor Guard when it was formed in 1996 and regularly participates in morethan  100  funerals  a  year.    His  current  assignment  is  usually  that  of  rifleman,  but  over  the  years  he hasserved as the unit’s commander, casket guard, color bearer and color guard and has folded and presentedthe  casket  flag.    He  is  a  life  member  and  past  commander  of  Veterans  of  Foreign  Wars  Post  6277  inMonterey as  well as a member of American Legion Post 4  in Livingston and served as a past District 4commander. Vic Humeniuk is a WWII Army veteran who saw service in the South Pacific.  He joined theHonor  Guard  when  it  was  formed  in  1996.    Since  May  1999  he  has  served  as  the  unit’sadjutant/quartermaster.  He is a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6277 in Monterey and is alsoa  life member  of  American  Legion  and  Disabled  American  Veterans.    Other  members  of  the  Veteran’sHonor Guard are: Curt Tays, Forrest Powell & Darius Bielicki.

mother of the Judge T. L. Denny and Silas Denny of Cookeville. She had been in feeble health for sometime past,  being  well advanced  in  years,  but her  death  came  unexpected  to her  family  and  friends.  Mrs.Denny was a noble hearted, Christian woman, having been a consistent and devoted member of the Baptistchurch all her life. She lived to raise to man and womanhood a large and respectable family of children anddrew  around  her  a  large  and  devoted  circle  of  friends  who  will  sadly  miss  and  mourn  her  loss.  To  thestricken  family and children we  extend deepest  sympathy  and sincerest  regrets  in  this hour of  their  soreafflictions. [Date 6/21/1894, Vol. VII, No. 34, Page 5]

Just a few weeks ago, death claimed as a victim, Mrs. Hettie Paul Denny, the sainted mother of Minnie M.and Virgil T. Denny, their father having preceded their mother to rest some twenty three years. This motherreared her children in a Christian home, faithfully serving her Lord and Master. She was a member of theMethodist Church, and a living example to the entire community. These are not idle words of tribute butcome from one who loved her as a friend and neighbor. The entire neighborhood loved and honored “AuntHettie” as she was affectionately called by most everyone, and we have yet to hear it said that she had evenone enemy in all the world. She was indeed a blessing to this community.(Note: Elizabeth Hettie Paul, d/o Thomas Gladney Paul & Sarah “Sally” Ervin.She married Timothy Denny, s/o Zachariah Denny & Catherine Stallings).

The  many  relatives  and  friends  of Jonathan  Denny  will  sincerely  regret  to  learn  of  his  death,  whichoccurred at his home  in  the eleventh District of Putnam County  last Thursday.    He  was  taken sick withpneumonia the preceeding Sunday.  We learn that he was perfectly conscious until the last, and died happyin the love of his Lord and Savior and the full assurance of the immortality of the Soul and his peace withthe Heavenly Father.

Mr. Denny was born in North Carolina and was brought to this county when quite young being oneof the pioneers who were deprived even of an ordinary education, being about eighty­one years old atthe time of his death.

He was a quiet, unpretentious  farmer and never sought or desired public attention, but contented himselfwith the walks of rural life or “life on the farm.”  He was always a moral, sober gentlemen of the old typenow fast fading out of view, a friend of law and order, with all his neighbors as devoted friends who willcherish his memory and uphold his good name.  He was the father of a large and interesting family ofchildren among whom are Judge T. L. Denny and Silas Denny, prominent and well known citizens ofthis  city.    In  common  with his numerous  friends,  the  PRESS  joins  in  expression  of  regret and  genuinesorrow.

Moses Alexander Jared Jr. Obt.b. 3 August 1827, TN – d. 29 September 1903

JARED, MOSES A.: The many  friends of Moses A. Jared  in this county will be pained to learn of hisdeath,  which  occurred  at  his  home  in  Cureall,  Mo.,  Sept.  28,  1903.  He  was  78  years  of  age,  and  agentleman highly  esteemed  for  his  upright  and honorable  character.  Three  children  who  live  in  PutnamCounty survive him, B. B. Jared (Bryce Byrne Jared) of Cookeville, P. Y. Jared (Peter Young Jared) ofBuffalo Valley, and Mrs. W. A. Hollaway (Martha Jane (Jared) Holladay) of Gentry. Also several otherchildren  scattered  throughout  the  west.  We  extend  condolences  to  the  stricken  family.  [Date  9/30/1903,Vol. I, No. 34, Page 1] Putnam County Herald newspaper, Cookeville, TN.
