Last Day of Term Thursday 29th March—Early Finish 2.30pm and
No Canteen Lunch Orders or Sales
Principal’s Report End of Term Arrangements
My sincere thanks to all members of our wonderful school community for a
fantastic start to 2018. Term one has certainly been a very busy and productive
term, with a special mention to our new Foundation students who have settled
beautifully into school life!
Please note the early dismissal time of 2:30pm on Thursday 29th March,
being the last day of Term One. There will be a short end of term assembly at
2:15pm in the Gymnasium on Thursday and students will then be dismissed from
this assembly to begin their term break.
Term two will resume on Monday 16th April.
I sincerely hope the upcoming Easter break affords some time for all families to
come together and share some special moments as well as some lovely autumn
days ahead and for all students to rest and relax in preparation for Term Two.
Staffing News
During the first five weeks of term two, I will be on Long Service Leave to recharge
the batteries and move house in the CBD. Wendy Emin will be in the role of Acting
Principal during this period and Sarah Nobbs will join the Leadership Team as
Acting Assistant Principal along with Michael Gill as Assistant Principal. I certainly
feel very fortunate to work with such a great team at Willy North and I have every
confidence that my absence will be barely missed! I will look forward to being
back on deck from Monday 21st May.
We extend our good wishes to Felicity Fyfe as she begins her maternity leave.
We welcome Michael Minas to the Willy North teaching team, who will be teaching
PE with Sarah Nobbs and Kristy Rummans for the remainder of 2018.
We bid Mary-Ann Skidmore farewell as she retires from the teaching profession. I
congratulate and thank Mary-Ann for her contributions to education over the years

National Young Leader’s Conference
Last Monday I had the privilege of attending the National Young Leader’s Conference with our 8 School Captains
at the Melbourne Convention Centre. It was certainly an inspiring event as we listened to a number of speakers
who overcame some form of adversity or disadvantage to then forge successful journeys in life.
I thought I would share some of the powerful reflections of our school leaders in this week’s newsletter:
The conference opened my eyes to the fact that success isn't always
smooth sailing and often inspirational people have had to overcome many
difficult hurdles on their way to leadership. Anyone can be a leader as long
as they have inner strength and self-belief. I really enjoyed the honest,
inspiring and funny stories Consentino, John Courtis, Harrison Craig and
Jemma Triscari had to share with everyone. Jenna
The experience was eye opening as we got to hear from extraordinary
people who have overcome challenges in their lives. It makes me want to
help and inspire others just like these speakers did. Ady
It was a great experience to meet such inspirational people that had
amazing stories about their lives. The day made me think about how I could
improve and become a better person and to be grateful for what I
have. Patrik
How successful Australian leaders overcame their difficulties and boundaries was spectacular. It made me extremely grateful for who I am, and what I have. They encouraged and motivated me to be myself, treat others the same way I wish to be treated, believe I can overcome every hurdle and challenge I face and, to be grateful that I am here and that I am able to recognize happiness in all shapes and sizes. Beatrice
I really enjoyed John, he was really inspiring when he told his story to everyone. So I aspire to be like him because he kept on going and persisting and never gave up when he was challenged. Matt
Policy Development at Willy North
The school’s practices are strongly reflected in a broad range of policies that are easily accessible on the school
website. Policies are developed through collaborative processes with students, staff & parents and presented to
our School Council for ratification. As our School Council is comprised of 4 teaching staff and nine elected
parents, any draft policies undergo considerable scrutiny. When a policy is endorsed by Council, we can then be
confident that the intent of the policy in most cases reflects the general aspirations of our school community.
Existing school policies, typically remain current for a period of approximately four years before they are
scheduled again for review. Policy review is primarily undertaken by the Education sub-committee of School
Council. The membership of this sub-committee is made up of School Council members and any interested
parents.
When a new or existing policy has been endorsed by School Council, we publicise this through the school Newsletter and then update the information on our website. Through this very transparent process, we aim to heighten the clarity around the school’s agreed practices and continue to forge a strong partnership between the school and home environments. Whilst individual views might vary from time to time, we share the same hope whereby we all want our students to have access to an outstanding education–how fortunate we are that this is our context at Willy North!
Enjoy the term break—Jim Cahill—Principal
Footy Week Activities
As part of Footy Week, Year 6 students took part in a Social Inclusion Football session run by Melbourne City FC coaches. The activities in the session encouraged students to learn a variety of new skills including dribbling, tackling and finished with a 1 vs 1 game. The students also had the opportunity to learn about a professional football club and also some interesting facts about the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russia. Year 5 students will also be participating in a clinic on Thursday.

Student Safety
Please take the time to regularly remind your child/ren about safety, especially when going to and from school. Here are the important points to mention:
Do not to talk to strangers and never accept a ride from a stranger, or accept lollies or gifts from a stranger.
Immediately report any issue or problem you may have when going to or from school, to your mum and dad, or to your teacher, the Principal, Assistant Principal or office staff.
Always get permission from mum or dad before going to play with a friend after school and always let mum and dad know where you will be and what time you will be home.
We advise that, wherever possible, children should travel to or from school with an adult or with their friends, rather than travel alone.
Early Release
All children collected from school before 3.30pm must be signed out at the Office. Parents will be handed an ‘Early Release Pass’ to hand to the supervising teacher. If a child is signed out at Recess or Lunch time, the Office staff will call the child to the Office and then ensure the Early Release Pass is given to the supervising teacher.
Bikes & Scooters Many children ride bikes and scooters to school each day. All bikes and scooters must be locked up in either the Bike or Scooter Enclosure to prevent theft. Please ensure your child has a chain and a lock.
All children who ride a bike or scooter must wear a helmet which is a requirement by the Government. The school regularly reminds all children about wearing helmets for their safety.
All bikes, scooters, skateboards, ribstic and helmets must be labelled, with your child’s name and class. Children are reminded they must walk their bike, scooter, skateboard or ribstic to and from the school gates. No bikes are to be brought through the school buildings and we request, where possible, that scooters are also not walked through the building.
Working With Children Cards Cardholders who are required to renew their WWCC will no longer need to go to Australia Post to lodge a paper form and present their current card. Cardholders will go to the WWCC website to complete their renewal application online and, if applying for an Employee Check, pay the fee using a credit card when using the online renewal process, cardholders will be notified by SMS, letter or email 28 days before their WWCC is due to expire. It is important for cardholders to keep their contact details up to date so that they receive this important reminder.
After receiving a notification, individuals continuing to do child-related work should go to MyCheck on the WWCC website and apply to renew their check. Cardholders will be asked to register with MyCheck if they have not already done so. Once logged in to MyCheck, cardholders will be prompted to confirm or update their personal contact and work details, complete the online form and, if applying for an Employee Check, pay the non-refundable fee. More information: an FAQ guide to online renewals will be
available in 'Publications' under 'Resources' on the WWC website,
