Hello Family,
Blessings to everyone. Well it looks
like we are heading towards good weather FINALLY but keep that light
jacket out for those just in case mo-
ments. Our ride schedule is star&ng
to get real busy and I truly appreci-ate everyone’s con&nued support in
everything that we do. Just to recap
on several events;
1 Mar – We held our monthly Chat-n
-Chew at the Great American Steak
in Alexandria VA. Unfortunately I was unable to a1end but got the
word it was a good &me had by all. I
also heard that Dennis & Charley bought their Granddaughter and she
was an absolute angel and nobody
got put out!
6 Mar – The family (Kenneth,
Lillian, Bruce and myself)
made the trip down to visit our Chapter “I” family for
their monthly gathering in
Mechanicsville MD. The ride
and mee&ng was great as always and a<erwards Ken-
neth stayed behind to go on
a ride with the chapter which
was a good &me.
12 Mar – The HIVE a1ended the MD
District Mee&ng at Adam’s Rib in Edgewater MD. A lot of informa&on
was put out with emphasis put on
changes made to the Parking Lot Prac&ce (PLP) curriculum which
seems like it been changed to the
Ride Like a Pro baseline but we will
see how things work shake out, also significant changes were made to
the annual Financial Statement Re-
port. Terry has iden&fied various errors within the new program and
it’s currently undergoing revisions.
20 Mar – The family hit the road to visit Chapter “J” for their
monthly gathering and the
word on the street was GWRRA basi-
cally took over the restaurant because
all of the Maryland GWRRA families payed a visit prior to a1ending the Dis-
trict Bowl-Athon.
20 Mar – A<er the MD GWRRA fami-lies invaded Chapter “J” at the Bob
Evans, it was &me partake in the MD
District Bowl-Athon (Duck Pins) held in Glen Burnie MD. We had a wonderful
&me and Toni was the high female
bowler (even though she was not there Lol). I need to
tell the REAL story
behind the pictures.
Picture 1, Charles Dorsey was actually
happy that he broke
30 for the game but Ms Shirley is like
“really Charles”.
Picture 2, Bruce ac-
tually rolled at gu1er ball, I just cropped the picture
to capture his
professional form, gosh he is
ready to go pro!
Picture 3, Shirley and Lillian are
actually review-
ing the Chapter
Ride Schedule “REALLY” and
had no idea Har-
ry Dockery and I bowled for them dur-ing that
frame (as
always,
Queen B’s at work)! Pic-
ture 4, we
are all bowled out
and it was
&me for a
li1le fellow-shipping
among one another, I think I was fin-
ishing up my 300 game that nobody
seemed to no&ce!!!!
Family, I just want to once again thank
you all for your con&nued support in
everything that we do. The
spring weather upon us so get your
checks (T-Clocks) done on your rides
and hope to see you all on the road soon with the family. EXTRA EXTRA,
We have our annual Fun Day coming
up this Saturday April 30th
with 101
people already registered and with
walk-ins we will probably be looking
at about 120 plus people coming to
hang out with the FIRST FAMILY. We appreciate everyone’s support and I
am posi&ve we will do this in “B”
style. Please keep the family
in Prayer.
Looking forward to seeing
everyone out with the fami-ly. Take care and “B” safe
out there.

RIDE AWARE

standard is similar to the U.S. DOT tests for helmets. The difficulty is that some jackets have a “CE Approved” label which only means that the body armor used in the jacket is ap-proved, not the jacket material itself. So, claims such as “abrasion resistant,” “shock ab-sorbing,” “impact resistant,” may be misleading. For a jacket to live up to those claims, it would have to meet the PPE standards (Personal Protective Equipment) set in England in 1995. Some mesh jackets have a Polyu-rethane coating that reportedly may melt into the skin when slid-ing on asphalt. Others are equipped with body armor that would easily fail CE criteria and provide little protection in the event of an unplanned separation of you and your Wing. When that happens, research tells us that there are critical areas of the body needing the most protection. The area of the most frequent im-pacts includes knees, hips, elbows and shoulders. So, ensure that your proposed purchase offers good protection in those areas. While protection of other upper body parts may not require as much armor, abrasion resistance, seam strength and tear resistance are important considerations. The minimum requirement to meet “high abrasion re-sistance” (sliding on your back, for example) is 4 seconds. An or-dinary pair of denim jeans pro-vides 0.6 seconds and a single layer of 1.4 mm cow hide will last 5.8 seconds. The material itself should have a tear-strength strong enough to repel a sharp object from penetrating the outer layer, and jackets should be lined with a slippery material to allow your body to slide against the external
shell, further reducing the risk of your skin being penetrated by sharp objects that get through the outer layer. Additionally the lin-ing should have a high melting point, to ensure it does not melt into your skin under friction from road surfing. None of the protective material will do you any good if the seams separate under stress. A test reported in Motorcycle News, in the UK found only 4 out of 18 leather suits from the major Euro-pean manufacturers, passed all the tests against the European Stand-ard. Twelve of these suits failed the burst test due to either thread and/or leather failure. Look closely at the seams. Seams in the critical areas should have at least one row of concealed or protected stitching, to hold the seam togeth-er after the visible stitching has been worn away against the road surface. Check the stitching. It should be regular with no dropped stitches, which indicate a poten-tially weakened seam. Leather should have 11-14 stitch-es per 5 cm, fabric should have 13-16 stitches per 5 cm. Too few stitches means the seam will be too weak, but too many stitches will actually weaken the fabric. Additional layers should be dou-ble stitched. Getting the answers to all of this requires some research. Magazine reviews and motorcycle Web sites are a good place to start. I’ve had good luck talking directly with the jacket manufacturers. Most are pretty straightforward with their responses to my questions. So, which jacket is best? To re-peat – “the one you are going to wear.” Choose yours for comfort,
(Continued on page 4)
From the perspective of the writer – Bob Barry
Buying a motorcycle helmet that will do its job when needed is pretty simple. Just look for the DOT sticker and stamp and you have a helmet that will do its job when needed. If your headgear also has a Snell rating, so much the better. The rest of your choice is all about fit, color, comfort and design. But, during my recent search for a new riding jacket, I discovered (once again) how much I didn’t know about the subject. So, what follows are things to consider, and for you to decide what is fact and what may be “marketing.” Sources include marketing materials from several manufacturers that shall remain nameless and several industry magazines and Web sites. For ex-haustive detail on the European standards, visit: http://www.pva-
ppe.org.uk/standards.htm. When many of us were in our teens, jacket choice was pretty simple – tough black leather. But now we have leather in multiple weights, and materials like Cor-dora, Ballistic Nylon, and Kevlar. Which is best? The answer is, “The one you are going to wear.” Anything beats riding in a T-
shirt. But how do you know the one you are going to wear will do the job when it’s needed? There are no officially approved safety standards in the U.S. for motorcy-cle jackets. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) may try to change that in the future, but, for now, we are limited to the CE (Conformite European) standard used widely in Europe and adopted by some American manufactures. Testing of body armor to meet the CE

From Your Assistant Chapter Director
Hello Hive (MD-B): Well, we visit Chapter H for spaghetti bingo where some of our members won money which by now you have heard about them winning games. We hope all have done the
brake recall, I took my bike to shop and it was done in two days. The weather is right for the start of a good riding season. The month of March we visited Chapter I and Chapter C then had great Maryland District meeting. At March gathering we started the
final planning for our Fun Day event, we hope to have all hands on deck 100%.
To the down side we have had members lose their love ones and we ask that you con-tinue to keep them in prayer. Miss Sharon Simmons lost her mother Mrs. Jean Dixon in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mrs. Margaret Dockery the wife of Harry Dockery passed also. We had sever-al members at Margaret’s services. I read a letter from the Chapter. We also did motorcycle escort to the cemetery. Harry and his son from California were very happy with the services and honor we gave the fami-ly. On April 16, 2016 we went to Chapter I Pancake Breakfast event and went Heyser Cycle for motorcycle
awareness event. I look forward to see more members out to monthly gathering and wish all great time at fun day program. I will be out of the country on vacation trip please keep me in prayer for safe travels.

SICK AND SHUT-IN
Please remember to keep our sick and

Page 5 From Your Assistant Chapter Director
I was just thinking back to 2001 when I joined GWRRA Maryland Chapter B. I
have made plenty of new friends and add an infinite amount to my growing
family (GWRRA). Sixteen years ago, I met Margaret and Harry Dockery. I am
blessed to call Margaret and Harry my family. Coming home from Margaret’s
Home Going Ceremony was a combination of happiness and sadness for me.
Margaret was always full of fun and joy. She was always willing to step up
whenever she was needed. She served for many years on the Hive’s Newslet-
ter Distribution Team. In the old days (not so old really), we used to mail out
the newsletter in hardcopies before the internet became so popular that now just about everyone
has a computer. Even though Margaret and Harry didn’t own a Bike, they went everywhere with the
Hive. On my very first Wing Ding trip to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, they drove down. I did too, stopping in
Ohio to visit my mother. The chapter will miss her greatly but her spirit with be with us always. It
won’t be the same without Margaret just different. I want to thank all the members from Chapter B
and Chapter I who came out to provide Margaret with a Motorcycle escort from the Church to the
cemetery (Aaron Cain, Grayson Dixon, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Charles Johnson, Richard Reyn-
olds, Dennis Johnson, Charley Fogg, Hampton Conway, Frank & Karen Monroe, Charles & Shirley
Dorsey, McAlister Bradford, Isaac & Sylvia Jackson, Dwight & Cookie Brooks, Damon Hill, Stanley
& Shelley Greene and I.) Please let us all keep Harry and the Dockery and Dorsey families in our
prayers during this difficult time.
Also, let’s keep Sharon Simmons and her family in our prayers. For those of you who that may not
know, she recently lost her mother.
It is officially Spring!!! It’s time to perform a check (T-CLOCK) on your bikes and trikes. Honda’s
recall is still going on. Please contact your dealership regarding this matter. Some of you have al-
ready begun planning your own riding schedule for the year. I hope you have looked at the Chap-
ter’s riding schedule and included some these events into your schedule. The Hive looks forward to
seeing you on our rides. If you know of a great ride, please let us know so we can join you.
We are continuing to have weekly planning meetings via conference call for the April 30th Fun Day and Motorcycle Rodeo. We need all hands on deck for this event. We are having a “Kids Corner”, Baked Goods Auction, Chapter Quilt Raffle, “Show Me” game, door prizes, raffle baskets, and Grand Prize Raffle. We are expecting children at this year’s events and have activities for them too! This event is open to all types of motorcycles. So please invite your family and friends to this event!! There will be activities for all ages. We will be having family from Region B in attendance. Please contact Regina Smith, Fun Day Chair, Aaron, Grayson, or myself if you can assist in any way
The Member of the Year Award and Director’s Award will be announced at Fun Day this year.
Upcoming Events Queen’s Chapel United Methodist Church is sponsoring their Annual Bike Blessing on May
1. Afterwards, there will be a ride to Friendly Farm Restaurant, Upperco, Maryland for a late
lunch. If you are interested in meeting us for lunch, please let either Aaron or myself know.
This way we can be sure to wait for you after the church service. Lillian Cruz Grand Master Tour Rider

Words From Our District Directors
Well, spring has officially arrived and the days are getting longer and warmer day by day. That can only mean one thing – it’s time to take a ride. Where to you ask? Thanks for asking – the correct answer to that is anywhere and everywhere, anytime. And to start with I want to point out the Chapter’s FUN events and fundraisers coming up.
I always like to re-emphasize the importance of visiting the Maryland Chapter’s fundraising events. Beside they being a lot of FUN for you, it’s great to get out and meet with the members of the other chapters. In most cases the fund raisers are an annual event and it allows us to get together once a year with FRIENDS we don’t get to see through-out most of the year, because of all the riding. At the District meeting last month, although some of you I had just seem the month before at Chapter H’s Spaghetti Bingo Dinner, that wasn’t the case for all. Not everyone at the Meeting attended Chapter H’s fund. Another reason to attend the fund raisers is to help the various Chapters to raise funds to operate for the upcoming year and support the many charities we all are involved with. We are all about “FRIENDS, FUN, SAFETY, and KNOWLEDGE,” but it takes the fundraisers for a chapter to serve its membership and community. Make sure we add at least the Chapter’s fundraisers to your Ride/Events Calendars. Some of these events will be highlighted with fly-ers and registration forms later in the newsletter.
We want to remind you of the By-State Rally, August 4-6 in Swedesboro, NJ, where Bob and Julie A’Hearn will be in the selection process for Region Couple of the Year. The selection will be on Saturday, August 6th. So please make sure you have this date marked on your calen-dars. It’s about a 2 hour trip, depending where you are traveling from. It could be a day trip for many of you. So come out and show your love for our District Couple of the Year.
Some events to be on the lookout for that are happening in the not so distant future:
April 16th - Chapter I’s Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser and Gathering April 30th - Chapter B’s Fund Day and MC Rodeo and Gathering May 1st – 17th Annual Blessing of the Bikes Hosted by Queen’s Chapel United Method-ist Church May 21st – Chapter F’s Fund Day and Gathering June 18th – Chapter C’s Pig Feast
Thanks to Allen Willingham for securing our District Meeting place, what a great place to have a meeting. I hope it was informative, because that was a lot of information to take in. Chap-ter Directors make sure you share it with you membership. We thanked Allen last month, but after the meeting and enjoying that great lunch I thought we’d do it again.
We also want to thank everyone for your support of Chapter J at breakfast before the Dis-trict Bowl-A -Thon and the Bowl-A-Thon itself. While we are handing out thank yous, let us not forget Ray and Cheryl Hartman for organizing and running the event. Good Job!!
As we look forward to yet another great riding season, we also look forward to another new adventure around the next turn, with great anticipation that the next one is even better than the last.
