In celebrating 25 years since The Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust was formed we would like to thank our customers old and new for choosing to use Wilson Bulk Transport Ltd as their preferred Transport Company. Our clients remain the most integral part of our business and without them supporting us, St John and Presbyterian Support would not benefit and for that we will always be grateful.

Our staff are also very aware

of the fact the work they do provides funds to directly help all of Ashburton receive the best of care from St John and Presbyterian Support and knowing they helped to provide that for community

I’m sure Trevor himself would be amazed at how far the company has come and feel he would be proud of what we have achieved in the community to carry on the legacy he started which we all strive to uphold to this day.

Trevor Wilson’s legacy surrounds Mid Canterbury in a way the man himself could never have foreseen when he decided to set up a trust to help his community, with over $5 million given back in the first 25 years.

For well-known transport icon Philip Wareing, Trevor’s mentorship and savvy business advice led to him owning his own transport business.

Philip only knew Trevor personally for five years before he died, but in that time they forged a strong friendship via radio telecommunications when trucking, and Philip had a deep respect for the man he described as hard-working and methodical.

“He was a quiet achiever and a very deep thinker.”

Philip knew nothing about road transport when he began, but thanks to Trevor’s guidance he learnt how to run a successful operation.

A pioneer in back loading in cartage, Trevor preceded many transport practices today and, through his insight and extraordinary work ethic, he left Wilson Bulk Transport

debt free and thriving.A local boy who did good,

he was not one to make large philanthropic gestures in life (although he helped many by loaning money), instead choosing to set up arguably the most significant charitable organisation in Mid Canterbury’s history.

It may not have come about had Trevor not suffered the loss of a much-loved stepson, John, in a motorbike accident. He had been grooming him to take over Wilson Bulk Transport.

But once diagnosed with terminal cancer, Trevor was

determined to give Ashburton people “a lift”.

Eventual trustees, Philip Wareing, Neil Thomas and John Welsh, recall the first meeting over wool bales in Trevor’s yard to discuss the formation of the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust.

Originally Trevor had plans to fund a hospice in Ashburton, but moved away from that idea once he realised the uncertainty surrounding the hospital at the time could mean that any building gifted for purpose could one day be sold off by the hospital board.

And so the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust was established in 1990 as part of his vision to see his transport company, Wilson Bulk Transport, continue under the guidance of trustees to provide a service to the community and specifically distribute profits to the Ashburton Order of St John and Ashburton Presbyterian Support Services.

Trevor wanted to support St John after seeing cadets in the rain at local rugby matches acting as water boys, grey blanket ready. The empathy he felt for those cadets was the

catalyst to his support. However, the trustees had

much ahead of them to fulfil his vision after Trevor passed away. Joined by Trevor’s former accountant Neil Sinclair, the trio had to set about selling commercial property in Timaru and Ashburton and tidy up his financial legacy so they could begin to help the two main benefactors St John and Presbyterian Support.

That legacy, and just how far reaching it has been in the community, would have been more than Trevor’s wildest dreams, Philip said.

“It struck the right chords and the right charities at the right time.”

Twenty-five years on since the trust’s inception, Philip says Wilson Bulk Transport has continued to be a successful business, feeding profits back into the local community.

“They have had great management and truck numbers have risen from seven to 34 on the road.”

And his generous spirit will live on.

4THE TREVOR WILSON CHARITABLE TRUST

The legacy of 25 years of the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust is tremendous and unparalleled, according to the Mayor of Ashburton.

Angus McKay, himself a loyal and proud customer of Wilson Bulk Transport, said the trust had allowed Ashburton to be ahead of the game compared to other districts.

He was particularly grateful for Trevor’s foresight in supporting Presbyterian Support – an organisation designed to fund a range of social services.

That critical support was highlighted when the recent closure of Relationship Aotearoa left a gaping hole in Mid Canterbury’s social services.

The national counselling and relationship service provider closed its doors amidst much controversy earlier this year after funding negotiations with the Government failed. It then went into interim liquidation in July.

Its closure left a large hole in Ashburton’s services.

Now, Presbyterian Support has stepped up to offer Parenting Through Separation classes, once a part of Relationship Aotearoa’s repertoire.

The first class was held last

week and run by Presbyterian Support counsellor Kath Byrne.

Presbyterian Support Ashburton manager Jackie Girvan said the courses, funded by the Ministry of

Justice, were intended to help separated parents focus on their children and make the best decisions for their family.

Without the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust that might not have happened.

Mr McKay said Government services had been refined over the years and Presbyterian Support, with its great operational skills, has been able to pick up those contracts.

That and St John provide vital support to the community, he said.

“If it wasn’t for the trust, there would be a number of services lacking.”

Mr McKay said the health shuttle was particularly important to the community and although the trust didn’t fund the operational costs of running the service it did provide the hardware.

In the 2014/15 financial year the shuttle travelled 52,106km and completed nearly 2000 one-way journeys.

With 23 volunteer drivers who work around a roster to transport the people of Mid Canterbury to and from

appointments in Christchurch, the service has provided a lifeline to locals and shown just how important the trust is.

Operating from Monday to Friday, the shuttle picks up in both Ashburton and Rakaia as well as in the town.

In the past financial year there have been no days missed, though occasionally the shuttle goes up empty and has to bring people back who have been discharged or had an early appointment.

Only a small amount of people used the bus under 20 (2 per cent) with the largest age group being between 60 and 75 years old (48 per cent).

The trust’s funding within the community had impacted on everyone in Mid Canterbury, he said.

“If it wasn’t for the trust there would be a lot of things that wouldn’t be happening, so I congratulate The Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust on 25 years of enormous contributions to our community and wish them every success in the coming years.”

A gentle giant with a huge heart and love for his community is how many describe Trevor Wilson.

His final gift was creating the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust, so that profits from his successful business Wilson Bulk Transport were distributed back to the community. It was a selfless act that has impacted on the Mid Canterbury community in the best possible way.

Those that knew Trevor said he was a hard-working, reserved man who was highly respected for his business skills and his wisdom.

Always making an effort to get to know his customers and meet their needs, he had an ability to listen, remember and reason that made his trucking company hugely successful – traits the business continues with today.

At his funeral it was said that Trevor had virtues that matched his size and that was proven by the fact that every year in operation, for the 10 per cent of customers he lost, he kept 90 per cent and gained another 20 per cent.

For customer satisfaction that is a record that most of us here today would be proud to achieve in our own businesses.

For Trevor, there was a job to be done–wheels had to turn, opportunities had to be taken and drivers had to be kept busy.

While there was a desire to make money, Trevor outwardly never displayed ostentatious wealth.

His rewards were those old-fashioned virtues of putting profit back into the company, investing in strong assets, helping people who needed a few bob to get started and being one of the most generous philanthropists in town.

It wasn’t until after his death that many stories of his generosity surfaced. He helped a large number of people and continues to every day in our community with his trust and its legacy.

Known as a wonderful friend to many, Trevor liked discussing the affairs of the day, fishing, talking about boats, listening to country and western music and laughing with him as he sweated out a good hot curry.

He was a friend who only had kind words to say, who was gentle, forgiving and

unselfish and was strong and calm, but his greatest virtues were those of patience and humbleness.

And then there are those big blue trucks powering up and down the highway that serve as a daily reminder to us all of Trevor’s strength of character, his determination to complete the task at hand, his concern that it be done efficiently and, let’s not forget the gentle giant’s dry humour that more often than not caught everyone off guard and left them smiling as Trevor climbed back into his truck

and drove away. Those trucks still power

up and down our highways and the strong foundation he set for the business means it’s thriving today and its success means his financial contribution to our community continues.

An avid rugby fan, he was always at the footy at the showgrounds, week in and week out. Trevor first got his idea to support St John when watching medics stand in heavy rain to serve their community. His terminal cancer diagnosis meant he

understood the value of St John to the district and the plethora of services Presbyterian Support offer for those with everyday issues. It’s fair to say that Trevor Wilson has touched every member of our community through the gift of his transport.

The man himself wouldn’t enjoy a fuss being made about that – but 25 years later, the success of the trust reminds us daily what an incredibly generous and selfless man he was and we are all the better for it.

6THE TREVOR WILSON CHARITABLE TRUST

Starting from humble beginnings as a combine harvesting contracting business off the farm between brothers Trevor and Maurice in the 70s, bulk cartage was added to the mix as an extension of their business.

As the clientele grew so did Trevor’s business and he decided to go it alone and formed Wilson Bulk Transport.

Originally he mostly bulk carted grain and that remains a core part of the business today.

Today, many years on, this is still a major part of the business with HPMV and 50 Max units transporting the wheat and barley and other arable products to end users throughout the South Island.

Trevor may have been a “gentle giant” and a quiet, hard worker, but he also possessed an ability to be highly innovative and forward thinking in terms of the transport industry.

Back in the late 1980s he recognised that the advent of shipping containers used for the transportation of goods world-wide presented an opportunity for Wilson Bulk Transport to provide a service to the exporters of Mid Canterbury.

This part of Wilson Bulk Transport’s business has shown growth - from two truck and trailer units, to now

operating two sidelifters and a fleet of specialist container units to transport import/export containers from ports of Lyttelton and Timaru. The swing from 20 to 40 foot containers meant upgrading trucks to handle transporting 34-tonne containers; thereby giving the clients the opportunity to maximise the use of the export containers.

While originally many of the containers were loaded with peas, lentils, and grass seeds from the arable sector, the change in farming practices has seen a major growth in vegetable crops which in turn sees containers of onions, potatoes and frozen vegetables transported.

In the past five to six years more importers bringing products in from overseas has seen Wilson Bulk Transport provide a trailer to tip bulk containers of grain and stock food supplements.

Again that vision of Trevor’s to look for opportunities has not been forgotten.

The movement of grain in containers to the North Island has grown over the years and Wilson Bulk Transport has refined the end loading of standard shipping containers to allow shipping companies to offer a North Island service.

The continuing expansion

of OSH rules has seen changes in the practices of top loading rail containers, so Wilson Bulk Transport has now constructed a load-out facility in their yard

with an emphasis on personnel safety.

The facility allows for Wilson Bulk Transport bulk grain trucks to bring the grain from

the farm to a transition silo for loading into rail containers, which are then delivered to the rail head in Ashburton. Many companies are now using

Wilson Bulk Transport and this facility to have their grain loaded safely into containers.

Following Trevor’s death in 1991, John Petrie was

appointed manager. When he started there

were just eight drivers and eight trucks, but the fleet has expanded to 34 trucks since

then. With the purchase of NZ Express in 2006, John moved on to manage this company and Jonathan took over Wilson Bulk Transport.

Jonathan says that, the growth of the company has been due to the very loyal support from many original clients of Trevor’s and from

new clients who recognise the service provided to them culminates in donations to two local community service groups.

While changing to meet their clients’ needs, the basis of the business has remained unchanged. Being a rural-based transport company and established through the cartage of bulk grain and fertiliser, this still remains a very important part of the business.

One of the biggest changes has been the move to the current site. This happened 15 years ago and provided them with a site and yard that has complemented the size of the fleet.

The building complements their warehouse and storage facilities, which are currently being expanded, and the yard allows room for the whole fleet to park and includes a truck wash, fertiliser storage bays, and public weighbridge.

While the move has also provided the opportunity to expand the warehouse and storage side of the business, Jonathan says they have not forgotten their core business, which is bulk cartage from Mid Canterbury to Christchurch or Timaru.

The premises also provide an improved working environment for office personnel. As a commitment to customer service, Wilson Bulk Transport is committed to providing a service that is “just that little bit better than everyone else”.

Often this means tailoring a service that is quite individual.

Part of their success has been due to building an association with companies and farmers and working with them to accommodate their needs.

Locally, they have adapted to provide a quality service to manufacturers, one of these being RX Plastics.

RX Plastics are a local company that requires many consumables to make their product but don’t require everything on site all at once.

This is where Wilson Bulk Transport provide an

invaluable service. All of the consumables arrive in shipping containers, they are transported from the wharf to the Wilson Bulk Transport warehouse or RX Plastics for devanning and storage.

The past 25 years have seen major changes in farming practices in Mid Canterbury

and the vision of Trevor Wilson to see Wilson Bulk Transport continue to operate has made the management look for opportunity to grow the business. This vision has seen Wilson Bulk Transport’s

fertiliser spreading business expand from one basic lime/fertiliser spreader to four units that are state-of-the-art machines. The motto “Knowing When Service Counts” is a very real statement with fertiliser

spreading. As the agriculture sector take responsibility in protecting the environment, while maximising the yield of their crops and pastures, it is important that Wilson Bulk Transport spreading equipment

and ahead of the industry, particularly in seeking higher productivity within their business. Heavier containers have been one such example of leading the field. Upgrades to those containers have given

greater efficiency for exporters and has led to Wilsons looking for lighter trucks in their container division. In the bulk area they have purchased higher-producing trucks that can carry 35 tonnes versus

the 28 tonnes they previously carried. General manager Jonathan Ward says it’s all about making sure the company does “everything right” and increasing productivity.

A new 1800 sq m warehouse

under construction at the back of the current site will give customers more storage ability while a major upgrade in dispatch and storage software will offer Wilson Bulk Transport a web portal into

Almost every Mid Cantabrian will have benefited from the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust during their lifetime – many without even knowing it.

Established by the man himself when dying from cancer, the trust was set up to distribute profits to the Ashburton Order of St John and Ashburton Presbyterian Support Services.

The trust owns Wilson Bulk Transport Ltd and all profits from the transport firm are funnelled back to the community meaning every time you choose to use Wilson’s, you are also choosing to support your community.

Trevor’s far reaching vision means St John has all the equipment it needs and the latest in ambulances while Presbyterian Support continues to offer the community very important human services and bridge a gap between decreasing government agencies and their lack of support.

Overall the trust and the transport company are integral to the fabric of the Mid Canterbury district and Trevor’s generous gift means through supporting Wilson Bulk Transport – loyal customers know their business is helping each and every one of us.

The story of the trust

Since 1991 the company growth has gone from strength to strength from eight drivers and trucks to 34 drivers and trucks and a total staff now of 39.

Wilson Bulk Transport Ltd now hold a 40 per cent share

of NZ Express 2006 Ltd in Christchurch and a 50 per cent share of Rural Transport Ltd, this gives us the opportunity to work together creating a greater network of all our resources which in turn benefits the trust.

What is AdBlue

SERVICE PROVIDER FOR WILSON BULK TRANSPORT

AdBlue is a brand name for Diesel Exhaust Fluid.AdBlue is a high purity quality urea solution that is easy to use. AdBlue is the registered trademark for AUS32, or Aqueous Urea Solution 32.5% that is used with the Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) diesel systems to reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust of diesel vehicles.AdBlue is stored separately from the vehicle's diesel supply and works through a sensor located in the vehicle's exhaust system. The sensor measures the amount of solution injected into the vehicle's SCR system to ensure the emissions are safely converted into harmless nitrogen gas and water.

How it works

It is precisely metered and sprayed into the hot exhaust manifold where the urea solution breaks-down into ammonia and reacts with the exhaust gasses in the presence of a catalytic converter. The oxides of nitrogen formed at combustion are converted into harmless elementary nitrogen and water.AdBlue is available in 10 & 20 litre packs, 200 litre drums & 1,000 litre pods from AIS, your local AdBlue distributor.“It’s essential that your vehicle’s SCR system be filled with AdBlue that complies with ISO standards in order to ensure the health & vitality of your engine.”

Meet the teamIn a strange coincidence the general manager of Wilson Bulk Transport grew up next to Trevor Wilson’s neighbouring farm on Fairfield Road.

Jonathan Ward understands the industry having come from an agricultural background, but he could never have known that he would end up working for the company when he windrowed Trevor’s lucerne and peas at the tender age of 16.

Although never working for Trevor when he was alive, Jonathan rose up the ranks since joining as a truck driver in 1994. After a decade driving he moved inside into the office before taking on the position of general manager nine years ago.

Since taking the helm Jonathan has overseen continual growth in the business.

It’s extremely satisfying for a local lad who is motivated by what Wilson Bulk Transport profits mean for

the community. “We haven’t aimed for the sky. We’ve just aimed for here. We want good sustainable growth.”

Doing a lot of tasks other companies don’t and

continuing Trevor’s legacy of “always doing something different” has fuelled the growth, he said.

“Like loading spuds and putting them into containers to send to the North Island. It’s good to have a diversity of operations.”

Knowledge has also been

vital.“There’s actually no job I

haven’t done in this place.”Although it is rare for

Jonathan to have down time, when he does he admits to

enjoying flying remote control helicopters and likes to use his jet ski with his children.

With nearly 22 years with the company Jonathan wants to continue sustained growth, knowing that more profits equals more money into the community.

“That’s what it’s all about.”

Like a fine wine Kent has developed extensive knowledge about just what it is that clients need at any given time having worked in the transport industry since 1979.

Now as the operations manager for the last three years, he is utilising all those skills and enjoys the challenge of working for a business that is putting money back into the community.

Mid Canterbury born and bred, Kent is a well known face about the district having coached and managed age group representative rugby teams – a passion he still has today.

Following a stint on a farm Kent began driving at age 17. When the opportunity arose to join Wilson Bulk Transport it was an easy choice because of their excellent reputation and good equipment and

gear.He enjoys the diversity of his job

and has the same motivation as all the staff – to ensure good returns for the community.

Kent knew of Trevor Wilson and the Trust but it wasn’t until he began working for the company that he realised just what an impact the success of the company has on the community.

You know you’ve got a great workplace when employees bounce back several times, as is the case with Wilson Bulk Transport’s Container/Flat Deck Dispatch Manager.

Back for this third stint, the former truck driver is another familiar face as he was born in Mid Canterbury before moving away for a time.

He enjoys organising the diverse areas of his role dealing with containers, RX Plastics, and all varieties of flat deck freight.

He believes Wilson’s customer service makes the business successful and the drivers themselves are great ambassadors for the company.

When not working Brent can be found spending quality time with

his family, camping ad socialising with friends.

Former stock agent, Grant Elvines, has been with Wilson’s for five years, making the move from Central Otago.

Formerly a driver, Grant has transitioned to the office and describes his job as managing a big jigsaw puzzle.

He’s thrilled to be part of the team – even if he had to wait a year to get the job.

“When I was driving trucks this was always the place to go, it was the blue chip transport in Canterbury.”

Grant particularly enjoys the fact that what he does helps the community.

“It’s not your run-of-the- mill company – we do a lot of good. It’s a special feeling knowing that what we do makes a different to so

many people.”A family man, Grant enjoys

spending time at home and rugby with his family when not at work.

14THE TREVOR WILSON CHARITABLE TRUST

For Jackie Girvan, Trevor Wilson’s ongoing financial support to Presbyterian Support is remarkable and a once in a lifetime gift.

The regional manager for Ashburton and West Coast offices said Trevor’s vision and the foresight of the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust’s trustees enabled Presbyterian Support to grow and offer a tremendous range of services for all the community.

Once an aged residential care centre at Cameron Courts, Ashburton’s Presbyterian Support changed following the downturn in farming when Mid Canterbury Rural Support employed counsellor Pat Withers to help struggling farmers.

From there an alliance was formed with Presbyterian Support and in 1991 Pat stayed on and started the Counselling and Education Centre for Mid Canterbury.

Pat at first worked on her own at the Federated Farmers building before being joined by two other counsellors and two social workers who ran courses for young people.

Best under pressure

The team then moved to Manchester Unity on Havelock Street before shifting to a refurbished building on Tancred Street funded by the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust.

For Jackie, having their own building has been a tremendous asset to their service. In 2014 the trust bought the land surrounding the building to further ensure the continuity of family work services for young people and family.

Every year a substantial amount of money is gifted from the trust to help cover operational costs including the 20 Presbyterian Support staff that are required to run all current services.

Jackie says the trust money gives them more flexibility as they don’t have a Government master.

“It is amazing. We are the only branch in the Upper South Island to have such a wonderful benefactor.”

As some Government services have declined, the role of Presbyterian Support has become integral.

Recently the closure

of Relationship Aotearoa left a gaping hole in Mid Canterbury’s social services, but local providers including Presbyterian Support stepped in to help fill the gap –

something that would not have happened if it wasn’t for Trevor’s generosity.

The national counselling and relationship service provider closed its doors amidst much controversy earlier this year after funding negotiations with the Government failed. It then went into interim liquidation in July.

Its closure left a large hole in Ashburton’s services. Part of the gap was filled with the arrival of Stopping Violence Services

as well as Presbyterian Support who has offered Parenting Through Separation classes.

Jackie said the courses, funded by the Ministry of Justice, were intended to help

separated parents focus on their children and make the best decisions for their family.

“Ourselves and Barnados have picked up six courses for the year (July to June). Presbyterian Support got three and Barnados got three.”

Presbyterian Support encompasses many other vital services within the community including Family Works Youth Services, Social Work and Counselling Support, Parenting Support, Community

Social Work, Social Workers in Schools, Play Therapy, Parents as First Teachers, Pacific Community Liaison and Health Promotion and Enliven Positive Aging Services that

include HomeShare day activity programmes, Community social work and volunteer programmes.

It is a legacy that Trevor Wilson could never have imagined would become so big and so important to Ashburton.

Although not sure why Trevor chose Presbyterian Support as a main benefactor, Jackie wonders if it was because of the farming downturn at the time of his death when counselling was

critical for those farmers having to work off the land to make ends meet.

Whatever the reason, he is not forgotten. A large photo of him on Jackie’s desk reminds

her daily of how lucky the community is and the building itself which is named after the gentle giant.

Today Presbyterian Support sees approximately 1000 clients a year – one out of every 32 people in Mid Canterbury, and offers an entire wraparound service for all community and social needs.

“There would be no-one locally who has matched his legacy. It’s the most remarkable thing.”

16THE TREVOR WILSON CHARITABLE TRUST

The Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust’s financial support of the Ashburton branch of St John has indirectly saved countless lives.

While many other branches struggle to make ends meet and have to undertake colossal fundraising efforts, the Ashburton base is secure in the knowledge that Wilson Bulk Transport’s continuing financial success ensures their sustainability.

Area executive officer Elaine Vallender said the trust’s contributions to St John in the decade she’s been working there had been significant.

The new building was an example of where the trust put in a significant contribution towards the build enabling the branch to own it freehold.

Then there was the purchase of three new ambulances at a cost of $170,000 each, sponsorship of First Aid training, St John in schools programme and recently funding a 70 per cent one-off ambulance scholarship that enables the branch to have an extra ambulance officer at the station.

“Basically because of the Trevor Wilson Trust we haven’t gone to the community seeking funding.

We will have to in the future, but right now we are the envy of every other branch in the South Island.”

Elaine described Trevor as “selfless”.

“The majority of people wouldn’t think to do something like the trust when faced with a terminal illness.”

She says the most important legacy he’s left St John is stability and the trust has

indirectly helped save many lives.

It has enabled the branch to put money towards other projects like the health shuttle.

The impact of the shuttle is best represented by the distance it has travelled ferrying people backwards and forwards to

Christchurch hospitals. In this past year alone the

health shuttle has travelled the length of New Zealand more than 24 times.

Latest figures show the shuttle has travelled 52,106km and completed nearly 2000 one-way journeys in the financial year of 2014/15.

Elaine said there was a definite need for the shuttle in the district.

“I’m not sure how people coped with it before we started three-and-a-half years ago,” she said.

There are 23 volunteer drivers who work around a roster to transport the people of Mid Canterbury to and from appointments in Christchurch.

The service operates Monday to Friday and has pick-up points in Ashburton and Rakaia, as well as in the town en route.

In the past financial year there have been no days missed, though occasionally the shuttle goes up empty and has to bring people back who have been discharged or had an early appointment, Mrs Vallender said.

It provides transport for people with appointment times between 10.30am and 3pm and runs on donations.

Only a small number of people under 20 used the bus (2 per cent) with the largest age group being between 60 and 75 years old (48 per cent). The

service was used by 1068 people in total.

Nearly 50 per cent of people had appointments at Christchurch Hospital. Most departed from Ashburton and without a support person.

On average the service went to 21 locations a month.

For twenty years Wilson Bulk Transport has been the trusted reliable bulk carrier for industry giant RX Plastics.

An innovative and progressive company with more than 30 years experience in providing industry solutions, RX Plastics has also been community minded – and are pleased the work they do with Wilson’s ends up benefitting

the community at large.“Although starting as a

locally based privately owned company we are now corporate owned but we still like to put a lot back into the community because that’s where 90 per cent of our staff live.”

A partnership of shared community values Melvie the longest serving employeeHe might be almost 70 but Melvie Mitchell is still loading and carting containers for Wilson Bulk Transport – and loving it!

With 23 years clocked up working for the transport Melvie is the longest serving employee and a much admired member of staff.

Starting back in 1993 Melvie first worked as a driver under general manager John Petrie.

He had met Trevor Wilson prior to working at the transport and recalled him as being a ‘good old fella’.

Back when Melvie started Wilson’s operated with eight trucks - a number that has rapidly grown to over 30 today.

He believes the rapid growth in the business can be attributed to doing everything right and putting customers first.

“If we look after them, they look after us.”

Melvie says his job of loading and carting containers can be quite challenging at times but says without it he’d “probably be up the road at the cemetery”.

It’s fair to say though that Melvie will still be the friendly elder statesman of Wilson’s for as long as he is able.

He enjoys the working

environment and the wonderful staff but when not at work you’ll find him with his family and in particular his grandchildren.
