“Identiity Inn Itsself”” Exxhibbit
GLENS FALLS – Friday, April 8th marks the opening of the Lower Adiron-
dack Regional Arts Council’s ‘Identity In Itself’ exhibit at Lapham Gallery,
with a reception that evening from 5-7pm featuring refreshments and lo-
cal musical artists, ‘Closer Still’. This exciting exhibit explores the works
of two artists: Benjamin Duke and Lorraine Hall. Both artists explore the
response to their materials, paint and clay, through a series of abstract or
sequential narratives. The difference in scale between Benjamin’s massive
works of art and Lorraine’s sculptures adds quite a dynamic tension to this
exhibit. Lapham Gallery is located on City Park in Downtown Glens Falls.
Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10am-3pm. For more information on
the exhibit, or for directions to Lapham Gallery, call 798-1144 x2 or visit the
website at www.larac.org (P)

News Release:HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY
CREDIT UNIONSTEADFAST COMMITMENT
TO MEMBERSMarch 31, 2011 (Corinth, NY): Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) is proud to be recognized as a 5-star Superior Credit Union by BauerFinancial, Inc., the nations bank and credit union rating fi rm. Earning this highest 5-star rating for strength and stability, Susan Commanda, CEO, and the entire team at HRCCU are providing their commitment to their members. To earn Bauer’s 5-Star Superior rating, HRCCU must excel in areas of capital adequacy, delinquent loan levels and profi tability to name just a few. Th e fact that it has done so for 65 consecutive quar-ters puts HRCCU in an even more elite group of ”Exceptional Performance Credit Unions”. Th ese institutions have consistently earned this highest rating for a mini-mum of 10 years without interruption.“Many consumers don’t realize that a credit union has members, not just depositors. Due to specifi c membership restrictions, there is a unique bond between a credit union and its members”, explains Karen L. Dorway, president of the research fi rm. “Because of this built-in relationship, credit unions, like HRCCU, have a step up in knowing how to serve each member individually.”Hudson River Community Credit Union’s mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing quality fi nancial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit Union has fi ve branches located at 312 Palmer Ave., Corinth; 160 Broad St., Glens Falls; 3762 Burgoyne Avenue, Hud-son Falls; 40 Leversee Rd, Troy and 35 Niver St., Cohoes. Th e credit union is a not-for-profi t fi nancial cooperative owned and governed by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or businesses and other legal entities such as a church or association, located within Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their immediate families are eligible to join the credit union.

Cooking Surface for the Avid Foodie
More and more people are taking cooking and baking into their own hands and equipping their kitchens with the necessities for churning out quality meals.
Possibly spurred on by the growing number of DIY cooking shows on television, in-dividuals are experimenting with lavish cakes, cookies and other culinary treats. They want their kitchens to offer the amenities that will enable them to whip up delicious food items.
A lot of the prep work that goes into cooking and baking takes place on countertops in the kitchen. There are many durable counter surfaces, but not all of them are suitable for preparing foods.
Marble counters are one of the coveted surfaces for prepping foods and many baked goods. Although marble is also very attractive in the kitchen, it has many properties that make it conducive to the kitchen environment.
Marble is one of the most durable stones available. The price of marble clearly illustrates its enduring nature. Ancient civilizations turned to marble to make buildings and statues because of its durability. Most of these structures are still in good condition today.
Countertops of marble are heat-resistant and will not burn or catch fire. But it’s best to place a hot plate between the marble and the pan or pot to protect the finish that may be
on the countertop.
Due to the strength of marble, countertops made from this material are also highly resistant to scratch-es, cracks, and breakage. However, the sealant on the marble could become scratched or damaged and require stripping. Talk with a countertop installer about the use of the marble in the kitchen to determine the best ways to protect the stone.
Marble is often cool to the touch, making it an ideal surface to roll out pastry doughs and sugar pastes for baking. Many fine chefs also rely on a marble rolling pin to avoid stick-ing of doughs due to heat-ing.
Because marble can be po-rous, it’s suggested to seal it properly so it won’t dis-color or harbor bacteria.
Marble is often prized for its appearance and durability.

CUSTOM DESIGNED TO FIT YOUR NEEDS!
Custom stamped concrete has many residential applications. Driveways, patios, pool decks, walk-ways and basement floors take on the appearance of slate, cobblestone or fieldstone. Yet, is stron-ger and more durable than conventional concrete. Custom stamped concrete fills the same construc-tion needs as regular concrete.
Architecturally designed stamped concrete is sev-eral times stronger than brick pavers and other paving systems. Unlike brick pavers, stamped concrete is non porous when finished-making it waterproof, stain and weather resistant. With custom stamped concrete you avoid the problems encountered with hand-layed products. You no longer have to worry about unleveling due to frost or vegetation growing between individual bricks.

(MS) -- A well-planned, high performance home costs less to operate -- and as importantly, high performance is the promise of premium resale value.
Sustainable components in-clude energy-effi cient heat-ing, lighting, cooling and water systems, as well as the reduction of natural resources like wood. Clip this checklist as a preliminary guide for both you and your builder:
Location: Build for lifestyle convenience where you can walk, cycle, or take public transit.
Position: Consider north-south positioning to maxi-mize use of the sun’s energy and heat.
Generate: Install solar panels and generator to offset public energy supply. Add a solar water heater.
Walls: Build with concrete. An award-winning wall system, advanced by Nudura, builds with pre-assembled forms, each one stacked, reinforced, and then fi lled with concrete. Once locked together (like Lego) the system creates a solid, monolithic concrete wall. This method (www.nudura.com) has shown to deliver energy savings of up to 70 percent and delivers a building envelope up to three times more sound resistant, four times more fi re resistant, and nine times stronger.
Materials: Premium green choices should include low- and zero-VOC (volatile or-ganic compound) paints and sealants, plus high-perfor-mance windows, roofi ng and fl ooring.
Landscaping: Design your gardens for low use of wa-ter and pesticides. Plan with drought-resistant native plants, perennial groundcov-ers, plus fl owers and shady canopy trees.

4 Once Popular Trends Losing Favor Among Homeowners Housing trends come and go. Just think of those avocado-colored stoves from the 1970s or the for-mica bedroom sets of the 1980s. The woodburning fi replace was a must-have home accessory in the early 1990s, but now it is los-ing ground to pellet stoves and greener options. Here are a few other housing trends that are go-ing out of style and making room for newer designs.
1. Kitchen desks: What used to be all the rage a few years back are now being passed over for larger desks in family rooms or bedrooms. Kitchen desks tend to be small and are more likely to collect clutter than provide a vi-able working space.
2. Carpeting: Although a little over half of all homes still have carpeting, wood fl oors, tiles and vinyl products are gaining ground over the once staple of interior design.
3. Skylights: The once desired windows on roofs have con-tinued to decline in popularity. Many new home manufacturers have nixed skylights from their designs. Improperly installed skylights tend to leak and can be maintenance nightmares.
4. Living rooms: Homeowners who do not desire a formal liv-ing space are eschewing living rooms for all-purpose rooms that provide a better place for the fam-ily to gather. If a person prefers the TV be separate from a sitting area, then two distinct rooms still may be needed.

Spring Greening Manageable Means to Going Green Around the House
Adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle is something many people do selfl essly in an effort to protect the environment and ensure that the generations to come have a healthy planet at their disposal. But that same lifestyle can also pay instant dividends, helping homeowners save money and creating a healthier atmosphere in which to live.
As spring cleaning season gets set to hit full swing, what better time to do some “spring green-ing”? Homeowners can make the most of spring cleaning by making several manageable changes around the house that can protect the environment without disrupting one’s current lifestyle.
* Clean green. Instead of using harmful chemical cleaners when cleaning around the house this spring, choose green cleaning supplies that don’t release harmful chemicals or toxins into the air.
* Paint with the planet in mind. Spring is a popular time to repaint rooms in the house. Ho-meowners with paint-ing on their to-do list this spring cleaning season should choose no- or low-VOC (vola-tile organic compound) paints.
* Fix those drafts. Chances are, after a long winter homeowners are well aware of which rooms were warm and which might have had drafts. Visit those colder rooms and plug any air leaks around the house. This will result in a lower heating bill next winter and could save substantial amounts of energy. For homeowners with attics, checking the attic for air infi ltration should be done each and every year.
* Explore alternative landscaping methods. Xeriscaping, a style of landscape design that requires little or no irrigation, can save signifi cant amounts of water. However, homeowners should consult a landscaping professional to determine if xeriscaping is a viable alternative to more traditional landscaping in their region. If xeriscaping can be done, then homeowners will save water while also reducing the use of potentially harmful pesticides and chemicals commonly used to keep lawns looking lush.
* Go low-fl ow. Spring cleaning isn’t just for clearing out the winter clutter. It’s also a time when many homeowners fi x up the house. If replacing showerheads, faucets or even toilets is on the to-do list, replace existing fi xtures with low-fl ow models to save water and money.
* Shop for sustainable materials. Sustainable fl ooring is growing in popularity now that go-ing green has truly taken off. Search for wood that has been harvested in an environmentally friendly ways. Sustainable fl ooring materials include bamboo and cork, which many hom-eowners fi nd as aesthetically appealing as it is eco-friendly.
* Double it up. Single-pane windows not only allow lots of external noise into the house, but they also contribute to heat loss in the winter, forcing residents to turn up the thermostat and waste more energy as a result. Installing double-pane windows will keep more external noise at bay, and allow homeowners to minimize heat loss in the winter.
* Unplug the appliances. Perhaps nothing around the house silently uses energy as much as a plugged-in appliance that’s not being used. Certain estimates suggest as much as 40 percent of a monthly utility bill is going toward powering home appliances that are turned off. While every home is different, it’s a safe bet that most homes can save energy by simply unplugging appliances that aren’t in use.

Ways to Reduce Moisture In the HomeMany homeowners worry about moisture in the home, which can lead to a slew of health ailments, including asthma or upper respiratory problems. After a long winter, homeowners concerned about moisture often look to solve problems that might have revealed themselves when the cold weather arrived.
In addition to health concerns, moisture can also negatively impact the value of the home. Mold growth and pest infestation are common side effects of excess moisture, neither of which is at-tractive to prospective buyers. To combat moisture in the home, homeowners should consider the following tips.
* Fix plumbing leaks. Plumbing leaks are often evident to the naked eye, as most occur at the fi xtures. Check to be sure leaky toilets aren't contributing to mold growth in the bathroom.
* Check the windows for leaks. The winter months often reveal leaky windows, which should be repaired once spring begins to avoid excess moisture that can result from spring rains.
* Reduce internal moisture sources. Moisture is not caused solely by external sources like rain or groundwater. Inspect the washing machine to determine if there are any leaks that are making the home less healthy and hurting its value.
* Install an exhaust fan in the bathroom if there's not one already. Without an effective exhaust fan, a bathroom is much more susceptible to mold growth. When installing an exhaust fan, be sure it's vented to the exterior of the building and not elsewhere inside the home, such as an attic or crawl space.
* Point rainspouts away from the home. Be sure the downspouts are directing rainwater away from the home's foundation. In addition, carefully clean out gutters in the spring and make sure they're securely intact to reduce the likelihood of water damage.
* Address any ventilation issues. Ventilation helps add or remove humidity, helping hom-eowners steer clear of moisture problems. If any ventilation concerns arose over the winter, make those issues a priority once spring cleaning and maintenance begins.

Restore Your Property Once Winter Weather Is Gone
Restoring a yard after a long winter is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. Harsh winds and heavy snow can take their toll on even the most beautiful landscape.
Spring is a homeowner's fi rst chance to survey the damage and begin restoring the yard to where it was before all those strong winds and snowstorms. To get started on your yard this spring, consider the following tips.
* Don't begin too early. The early bird might get the worm, but the early hom-eowner might get a damaged lawn. If temperatures for an upcoming free week-end are unseasonably warm, it's best to avoid doing spring yard cleanup until there have been several warm weekends to thaw the ground. Unless the ground has completely thawed, footsteps on the yard will damage the grass, compact-ing the soil and preventing the air and moisture that soil needs from doing its job and penetrating the soil. What's more, if the yard is raked before the ground has thawed, the rake might just be pulling the grass out by its roots.
* Survey the property. A close survey of the property will give homeowners an idea of just how big or small their restoration project will be. A thorough survey will reveal any problem areas and may also reveal some unexpected guests. Rabbits and squirrels often nest in yards during the winter. Rabbits will nest in the ground, while squirrels typically build nests made of leaves in the trees. Unless it's entirely necessary, avoid removing any nests, and be sure to carefully inspect the yard before the season's fi rst mow.
* Out with the old. When the cleanup process is ready to begin, it's time to remove remnants from last season. This includes removing any dead plants as
well as last year's mulch. If new mulch is simply thrown on top of old, plants could suffocate.
Dead leaves also tend to gather during the winter, often up against fences or a home's exterior walls. Rake up these dead leaves and add them to the season's compost.
* Get rid of thatch. Thatch can be soil's worst enemy, preventing its access to the sunlight, air and moisture it needs to make the lawn look beautiful and healthy. Thatch removal can be tiresome, but visit the local hardware store and pick up a dethatching rake to make the job a little easier. Thatch removal isn't always necessary every spring. Many homeowners have found removing thatch every other year is effective enough.
* Aerate the yard to revive the soil. Soil often becomes compacted as spring becomes summer and summer be-comes fall. This is especially true of yards that are heavily used, be it by kids playing outdoors or families who love to host warm weather gatherings in the yard. Aerating in the spring removes plugs of sod from the soil, loosening it up and making it easier for air and water to reach the roots.
* Address those ugly bald spots. Bare spots in a yard can result from any number of things, be it a dog urinating in the yard or even disease. Early spring, when temperatures are a little cooler and promote grass growth, is a great time to address the yard's bald spots. Do so by clearing away the spots and sprinkling the freshly exposed soil with some grass seed. Then add some fertilizer and be sure the newly seeded areas get some water until the new, healthy grass begins to grow in.

Available Alternatives to Granite Countertops
Granite has proven a popular choice for kitchen renovations over the last several years. But concern about the potential health implications of granite, not to mention cost and maintenance, is causing many homeowners to reconsider granite for countertops and backsplashes.
It's hard to deny the appeal of granite's appearance. It can be beautiful and complement many design styles. However, it tends to be porous, and the Food and Drug Adminstration has said that it may harbor potentially dangerous bacteria if not properly cleaned. Furthermore, there is evidence that granite may give off high levels of radon depending on where the stone was harvested.
Fortunately for homeowners who like the look of granite but want something that's more af-fordable and easier to maintain, there are many alternatives available that mimic the look of granite without the health concerns.
Solid surface products that are made with composite materials are growing in popularity. Many contain quartz or other stone mixed with plastic and glass binders. These products tend to be easier to maintain than granite, and many come backed with manufacturer warranties.
Due to the solid surface materials of the past, these types of materials have garnered a bad name. But new innovations are so high-quality, that many consumers have diffi culty decipher-ing between real granite and look-alikes.
Engineered stone is another option for homeowners. These products are made from bits of natural stone mixed with fi llers and offer the same scratch- and heat-resistance as granite.
Depending on the material, solid surface products and engineered stone can cost anywhere from $35 to $125 per square foot. These surfaces are more cost-effi cient than granite, which can start at around $50 per square foot.
If cost is not a factor and durability the chief concern, homeowners can consider another ma-terial -- concrete. Concrete can be tinted or patterned in adherence to a homeowner's desired design style. Because it can be labor-intensive to install, the price of concrete will likely rival granite.
Homeowners who want to buck tradition and consider a countertop material other than granite have plenty of attractive and durable options from which to choose.
There are many alternatives to granite that can be both attractive and durable.
