To launch our season, three of France’s most distinguished soloists and chamber musicians bring a musical feast: two splendid French piano trios, plus Schubert’s gorgeous and tenderly affectionate Notturno. A joy to savour, Cassard’s mellow tone and subtle phrasing make him a master of Schubertian language. The Fauré and Ravel piano trios are

equally appealing: the Fauré reveals his wonderful gift for melody; the Ravel, a dazzling tour de force for virtuoso players, is wonderfully well written – a work of true magic with a marvellous finale that, like Fauré’s, is full of colour, energy and contrast.

An opportunity to hear one of the most widely loved operas of all time in a fresh new production. Combining fairy tales, farce and philosophy with spell-binding music, this performance promises to both mesmerise and entertain. With a real sense of community, yet around 450 students, Bath Spa university’s Department of music is large enough to take on ambitious performance projects such as this, as it did the British première of Philip Glass’s Satyagraha. the cast, orchestra and production team for this opera are all current music students.

Like Mahler, Richard Strauss’ wonderfully rich harmonies and imaginative orchestration make him a master of the late Romantic style. Composed during the darkest days of war, Metamorphosen expresses his profound grief at the tragic destruction of German culture under the Nazis. Equally anguished,

Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder nevertheless end in a mood of resigned acceptance – more transcendent and uplifting than anticipated. Light and enchanting, young Mozart’s Divertimento makes the perfect foil, gracefully refreshing the spirit. To end their marvellous programme, this superb orchestra brings the Tango, Valse and Ragtime from Stravinsky’s jazz-imbued Soldier’s Tale. The emotional range and intimacy of these two sublime cello suites make them among Bach’s most popular works today. Inspired by Rostropovich’s interpretations of them, Britten wrote three of his own, this arguably being the most passionate, incorporating four Russian themes including the Russian Orthodox Kontakion. Honouring Britten’s centenary, this star amongst cellists plays other music with sacred roots, including John Tavener’s Thrinos, and Gavin Bryars’ Laude Dolce.

These two exciting young ensembles play individually and together, exploring dance in all its forms. Bartók’s colourful Dance Suite, with its fine melodies, luscious harmonies and invigorating folk dance rhythms helped secure his international reputation. Britten’s delicious Symphonic Suite includes both courtly and wildly vigorous folk dances that obliged the ladies to go and change their linen! A witty and delightful miniature, Beethoven’s lighthearted Duo for Clarinet and Bassoon is in complete contrast to mozart’s passionate and much loved Clarinet Quintet – a masterpiece that takes the listener on a sweeping journey of human emotions. Bursting with youthful energy and sub-titled ‘Go play, boy, play’, Britten’s Three Divertimenti portray his old school friends. In 2010, aged sixteen, Lara Melda won the BBC Young Musician competition with her dazzling performance of Saint-Saëns’ second Piano Concerto. Now touring internationally, we are thrilled to present her first recital here – a splendid array of music by masters of the keyboard.

Two wonderful Bach preludes and fugues precede some equally rewarding Chopin, including this dark, dramatic and ferociously fast Scherzo. Composed in a single day, his Elegy is affecting and technically assured; Going downhill on a bicycle is experimental and the Phantasy Quartet harks back to early English fantasies for viols. With fabulous playing and very approachable yet rewarding programmes, Onyx Brass has dominated the international brass ensemble world for the last eighteen years, performing across Europe, the US, UK – even for Prime Ministers and the Queen! WORkiNG ACROSS wIltShIRE aNd thE SoUth wEStAn independent charity, Wiltshire Music Centre is nationally recognised for its outstanding education and community work. Each year, thousands of people of all ages engage in the inspiring new music experiences it offers.

The Centre’s biennial Special Schools and Small Schools festivals, run in partnership with Wiltshire Music Service, celebrate creative song-writing facilitated by highly skilled musicians in dozens of schools across the county and Swindon.

In partnership with the orchestra of the age of Enlightenment’s South west Residency and Wiltshire Music Service, the Centre works with chippenham primary schools. Primary live brings inspiring performances by professional musicians into schools.

zone club brings together learning disabled young people aged 16+ and adults. Meeting at the Centre each month, this highly successful project provides inspiring opportunities to create music, dance and film with outstanding artists.

To help meet growing demand this is now delivered in partnership with sister projects in Wiltshire and Somerset.

Through other partnerships, the Centre works to develop projects with Black and minority ethnic communities across Wiltshire. Plans to build on this work include collaborating directly with partners in these communities, further extending the inclusivity of the Centre’s work.

A core partner in the formation of wiltshire Music connect, the county’s Music Education Hub, the Centre also works with partners to develop musical inclusion in Swindon, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. The number of children taking part in the Centre’s inspiring music education projects across the county continues to grow: over 20,000 have taken part to date. The Centre is very grateful to all who support this valuable work – see pages 2 and 30.

South west Music School, a virtual school for exceptionally gifted and talented young musicians across the region, was launched five years ago through a region-wide partnership. Two weeks of Priority Booking are available to all Friends of Wiltshire Music Centre. Memberships start at £30 a year and can be bought at any time from the Box Office on 01225 860 100 (pay by card or request a standing order form).

DiSCOUNTS Only one discount may be applied to each ticket. a concession of £1 is offered on specified concerts to those of pensionable age, student card holders and those registered disabled. One complimentary carer’s ticket is available to those registered disabled and requiring assistance to attend.

Groups of 10 or more receive one free ticket. If you are interested in booking tickets for a group, please contact the Box Office 01225 860100 for help with organising your visit. Multibuy discount: get a £2 discount per ticket on an equivalent number of tickets when booking for three or more different specified concerts at the same time. Under-18s are eligible for half price tickets on specified concerts.

a family ticket (family tKtS) is offered on specified concerts to encourage children to broaden their musical experiences. Up to two Under-18s pay just £1 each when their tickets are bought with one full-price ticket to the same concert.

fREE tIcKEtS We are delighted to offer free tickets to 8 to 25 year olds (inclusive) on selected concerts, thanks to our collaboration with the acclaimed CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust (cavatina.net). Please quote CAVATINA when making a ticket booking (01225 860100).

TiCkET RETURNSWe offer a resale service for sold-out events at an administration fee of £1. Return your tickets no later than 5 hours before the performance. If resold, we can offer you a credit against a future concert. We regret that we are unable to refund tickets.

CONCERT AND BAR OPENiNG TiMESThe Centre and its fully licensed bar is open to audience members 30 minutes before each concert. Please allow 15 minutes to collect tickets and to order interval drinks.
