HOW DO I CHOOSE A THERAPIST?

It is easy to be confused by the various titles associated with counsellingservices. Below are descriptions to help you differentiate between each one.

PSYCHIATRISTS

D i r e c t o r y o f C o u n s e l l i n g S e r v i c e s & T h e r a p i s t s - W i m m e r a

Psychiatrists are medical doctorswho are experts in mental health. They specialise in diagnosing andtreating people with mental illness. Psychiatrists have a deepunderstanding of physical andmental health – and how they affecteach other. They help people withmental health conditions such asschizophrenia, depression, bipolardisorder, eating disorders andaddiction. Psychiatrists providepsychological treatment, prescribemedications and do procedures suchas electroconvulsive therapy. Psychiatrists do at least 11 years oftraining – usually more. Theyfirst do a medical degree atuniversity. Next they spend at least1 or 2 years doing general medicaltraining in a hospital.

Then, to become a psychiatrist theymust do at least 5 years ofpsychiatry training under thesupervision of the Royal Australianand New Zealand College ofPsychiatrists (RANZCP). This isdone while working inhospitals, rural health or communityhealth services. Allpsychiatrists must also be registeredwith the relevant medical board inAustralia or New Zealand in order tosee patients. This is theAustralian Health PractitionerRegulation Agency (AHPRA). PSYCHOLOGISTS

Psychologists provide their expertise by assessing and diagnosing a range ofproblems, developing strategies and treatments, and offering guidance andsupport. Psychologists provide these services in a wide range of public andprivate settings, including health, mental health, disability, family services, community, schools, corporate and business, education, sport and the performingarts. (The Australian Psychological Society Limitedhttp://www.psychology.org.au/) To become eligible for general registration an applicant is generally required tohave completed a four year undergraduate sequence of study in psychology(such as a bachelor degree with honours) followed by at least two years ofpractical experience as a registered provisional psychologist. The necessarypractical experience is usually obtained by undertaking an approvedpostgraduate degree accredited at fifth and sixth year level (such as a two yearMasters) or higher (such as a three or four year Doctorate). Alternativelypractical experience can be obtained by completing a 4+2 or 5+1 internshipprogram. (AHPRA http://www.psychologyboard.gov.au)

Social workers maintain a dual focus on both assisting with and improvinghuman wellbeing and identifying and addressing any external issues (knownas system or structural issues) that may impact on wellbeing or may createinequality, injustice and discrimination. Social workers may undertake roles in casework, counselling, advocacy, community engagement and development and social action to address issuesat both the personal and social level. Social workers also work in areas such aspolicy development, education and research particularly around issues ofsocial justice, disadvantage and the marginalisation of people in theircommunities or in society. To work as a social worker in Australia, you will need either a Bachelor ofSocial Work or a relevant Bachelors degree in another subject with a Masterof Social Work. COUNSELLORSA big project involves overseeing a lot of moving parts, oftentimes from differentpeople. To have a successful rollout, project managers rely on a well-craftedproject plan to ensure objectives are met on time and on budget.

New for Q1

A counsellor offers talk-based therapyand can help you to address yourproblems in a positive way by helpingyou to clarify the issues, exploreoptions, develop strategies andincrease self-awareness. For somepeople, just the process of telling theirstory to a counsellor, and beinglistened to, is helpful. Some counsellors may call themselvesPSYCHOTHERAPISTS. Counselling and psychotherapy bothrefer to psychological therapy, although psychotherapy is likely to bemore in-depth than some forms ofcounselling.

Do not assume that all counsellors areprofessionally qualified. There is no lawin Australia that requires a person whoprovides a counselling service to haveeither qualifications or experience. Thismeans that people without training orskills can call themselves counsellors orpsychotherapists. It is important youask your Counsellor what theirprofessional training skills are. Atrained counsellor has usually spentthree or more years studyingcounselling at university, often atpostgraduate level, or has an equivalentlevel of training in another accreditedhigher education institution.(Better Health Channelhttps://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au)

A clinical Hypnotherapist is a specialist in hypnosis, who uses the healingstate of hypnosis to work with problems or conditions that clients wish tochange. When in hypnosis, the conscious mind (that busy, critical, analytical part of the mind) takes a rest. Hypnosis allows people to tap intothe storehouse of information that lies in the subconscious (sometimesreferred to as the unconscious) mind and make positive changes to thoughtpatters, habits or the effects of traumatic incidents that are having anegative impact either mentally or physically.
