Bringing Medical Excellence to Our CommunityWinchester Hospital’s ultrasound services are located in four convenient locations. Our technology provides great comfort for patients and our imaging staff is dedicated to providing high-quality exams and timely results.

Our ultrasound and vascular services are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).

During your visit, our staff will answer any questions you have about your exam.

What is an ultrasound?

Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain images from inside the human body. Warm gel is applied to your skin and a small wand, called a transducer, is moved over the skin and sends sound waves into the body. These sound waves are then reflected off internal organs and sent back to the transducer in the form of an echo. These echoes form a picture (image) on the screen and the radiologist or vascular surgeon is then able to interpret these pictures.

How do I prepare for my ultrasound?

How to prepare for an ultrasound will depend on which organ your physician wants examined. Some require no preparation. Your physician should tell you about specific

preparations depending on which exam he/she orders. You may also call us at (781) 756-2342 if you have any questions about your exam.

What can I expect during my ultrasound?

A registered sonographer will perform your exam. Most ultrasounds are performed when you are lying down. Most of the time you can keep your clothing on, occasionally you will be asked to change into a gown. Warm gel will be put on your skin and the transducer will be moved over your skin repeatedly. You may be asked to hold your breath or roll to one side or

the other. You may need to lie still on the bed.

For women whose physician ordered an internal or transvaginal ultrasound, know that this procedure is similar to having a pelvic exam at you doctor’s office. If you are having a biopsy, a specially-trained doctor, called a radiologist, will perform your procedure. A sonographer and possibly a nurse will be

present during the biopsy.

Most ultrasounds last between 15 and 60 minutes, but this will depend on which type of examination your doctor requested. When your examination is complete, it will be interpreted by a radiologist and a report will be sent to your physician. Vascular ultrasounds are interpreted by a vascular surgeon and a report will be sent to your doctor.

Will I have an injection?

Ultrasounds do not require an intravenous injection of contrast dyes.

What should I do after my exam?

You can resume your normal activities as soon as your exam is completed.

How do I pay for my exam?

Although Winchester Hospital accepts most major commercial insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid and Worker’s Compensation, it is important to check with your carrier prior to your exam to determine coverage. If you do not have health insurance, we accept MasterCard or Visa, personal checks or cash.

How will I get my exam results?

Your exam will be interpreted by a radiologist using our state-of-the-art Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The results will then be sent to your doctor. Your doctor, in turn, will review the results with you to determine the best course of treatment.

How do I obtain a copy of my images?

You must pre-arrange the release of your images by calling one of the numbers below:

• Winchester Hospital: (781) 756-2353

• Winchester Hospital Outpatient Center at Unicorn Park: (781) 756-4008
