Becky Herbert MONDAY MORNING CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING with SAM ALBERT Our next dates with Sam are Easter Monday 28 March at Woodhams and Mondays 25 April at Three Maids, 23 May and 18 July both at Norton Livery. Sam Albert has ridden for Jamaica at the Beijing Olympics, the 2012 Olympics and several WEGs. She now teaches all levels from Pony Club to advanced riders. DRESSAGE INSTRUCTION with LIZZIE MURRAY at WOODHAMS FARM It’s great to have Lizzie instruct for us once a month and your next dates with her are: Fridays 18 March and 15 April, Tuesdays 17 May and 21 June,

10 am – 1 pm, at Woodhams Farm, Springvale Road, Kings Worthy The cost is £25 per person with a maximum of 4 in a group.

To join us: complete the return slip at the end of the magazine and send it to me with your cheque (payable to Winchester Riding Club). I’ll email your time to you 2 or 3 days before and times will also be on the website. Please be flexible with the time you ask for, as I aim to group riders together according to experience. It’s no fun if you’re new to dressage to be with someone who finds it very easy and not very constructive for experienced riders to be with riders new to dressage. PLEASE don’t be put off because you feel dressage isn’t your thing or you’re not good enough! Yes, Lizzie is a top competitor and instructs top competition riders, but she is also happy to teach non-competitive riders. She offers practical advice and help to ALL riders at ALL levels.

NEW RIDING HAT STANDARD CHANGES IN 2016 From 2016 the British Horse Society will be implementing changes to their hat rules to phase out the use of EN1384 or BSEN1384 in all BHS exams and competitions following changes by the EU Commission. Hats bearing only the EN1384 or BSEN1384 standard will no longer be accepted under BHS hat rules for 2016. However, hats would be acceptable if they carry EN1384 or BSEN1384 and another standard such as those listed:

PAS 015 (1998 or 2011) VG1 01.040 (2014-12) ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards) SNELL E2001 AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards)

BHS Gold members have been advised to invest in the most up to date standard because of insurance. Those taking BHS exams will be required to update their hats. British Riding Club Members will also be expected to wear the most up to date hats. BRC Members taking part in Area Qualifiers and championships will have their hats checked and tagged before competitions. Although we are not an affiliated riding club, we will abide by these standards for competitions and aim that all members will comply for training sessions by the end of the year.

WRC Committee Members Tell All!

WE PUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON JENNY COX . . . I had no interest in ponies until the age of 8 when my family moved to Oakley. During the

course of the move my parents met a lady who owned and bred show ponies who was also

moving to Oakley and she suggested that my sister and I should come and see her ponies. After

that first visit, I spent as much time as I could at her stables and finally at the age of 11 my

parents bought me a 13 hh bay mare of unknown breeding called Brownie. She was a great

character who delighted in finding weak spots in our field fence and breaking out! Two years

later I had outgrown Brownie who was passed to my sister and my parents bought me a 14.2 hh

bay Connemara mare called Peg’s Dance.

I belonged to the Vine Pony Club and enjoyed many Pony Club camps, rallies and inter branch

competitions as well as competing at local shows and gymkhanas. When I went to Southampton

University to study economics and accountancy, Peg was sold. Initially I shared my sister’s

horse and when my sister gave up riding I was lucky enough to be able to continue riding on

friends’ horses or borrowed horses.

Following university I joined one of the large firms of accountants in London to qualify. With

qualification in sight I bought a young horse to bring on. He was a strawberry roan gelding out of

a polo pony by a thoroughbred and had been called El Loco (Spanish for madman) by an

Argentine groom. He certainly could be difficult at times, but I had some fun with him until the

pressures of work left too little time to do him justice.

I then met Tim. We married and had two sons: Matthew, now married with 2 sons and a

daughter, and Simon, now married with a son. Boys tend not to be interested in riding and ours

were no exception, so for some years I did not get to ride at all. Tim came from a sailing family,

so the boys and I learned to sail.

When both sons went away to school I suddenly had time to ride again and spend the next few

years helping the owners of a nearby racing yard. Initially I was doing roadwork either to get

jumpers fit enough to work on the gallops or as part of the rehabilitation of horses that had had

tendon issues. I then got to ride horses on the gallops which, on a good horse, was quite

exhilarating. Eventually I had enough of riding 2 and 3 year old flat horses and acquired Native

Sun, a 7 year old who was being retired from racing as he bled. My farrier said that Sunny and I

should do more than just be happy hackers and suggested I joined the Berkshire County Riding

Club. This was when I really got into horses again. I took part in many riding club activities

including camp and being a member of dressage and show jumping teams at area qualifiers.

Sadly, Sunny developed equine motor neurone at the age of 12 and had to be put down.

My next horse was a 6 year old Dutch warmblood called Vivaldi, but known as Ernie. He was by

Gribaldi, a famous dressage stallion, but he was not that keen on dressage! Initially Ernie was at

livery in a dressage yard, but he wasn’t happy there so I moved him to an eventing yard and we

completed several unaffiliated events with a number of placings. Perhaps our biggest success

was winning the British Riding Clubs Riding Horse Class when the Festival of the Horse at

Aston Le Walls included showing classes. Once again I was unlucky. At the age of 11 Ernie

became crippled overnight and eventually after an MRI scan it was found that he had a chip

fracture of the navicular in his near fore and I decided to have him put down.

March and April 2016 7

I now have my third chestnut gelding. I really did not want to start again

with another young horse, but I saw Biscuit Man and fell in love with

him. He was 5, an Irish Sports horse by a Grade A show jumper. The

gamble has paid off and Biscuit has turned out to be the best horse I have

owned. He is a real all rounder and is happy to do dressage, jump in the

ring or across country and does well in the show ring as a working

hunter. Biscuit is at livery with Mark Corbett who helps me with show

jumping and cross country. I have used a number of different trainers for

dressage, but now find the WRC clinics with Lizzie Murray bring out the

best in Biscuit. This year I would like to do our first Elementary dressage

test and to complete an event at 100 cm.

Whilst still a member of the Berkshire County Riding Club I joined the Winchester Riding Club

as their events were mainly at Sparsholt and the ones I had entered previously had been well run.

I have now moved from the Berkshire County Riding Club to the Bourne Valley Riding Club and

have been a member of their intermediate dressage and show jumping teams at area qualifiers.

Jenny Cox

Jenny nobly volunteered to take on points some time ago and we are very grateful for her expertise with this. She has also worked with Nikki to prepare our annual accounts for the year ended 31 October 2016. She was officially voted on to the Committee at our AGM in November and will continue with these responsibilities as a member of the Committee.

SHOPPING with WRC . . . WRC would like to show you some purchases bought with club funds: lovely working hunter fences. Hope you all like them and enjoy jumping them!!

And here are the lovely numbers, etc, for jumping competitions that WRC have purchased with club funds. We have bought numbers 1 to 18, 2 x A, 2 x B and 2 x C, also 2 x start and 2 x finish markers.

They are very smart and strong and will be the finishing touch to any course we build for you all at future WRC competitions.☺

FARRIERS’ FORUM

To Shoe or Not To Shoe? That Is the Question . . . On Tuesday 9 February 30 people (members and non members) enjoyed a lively evening with Cliff Barnes (traditional farrier) and Trevor Jones (equine podiatrist). Many questions were raised about both bare foot and traditional shoeing. All questions were answered in a very professional way, allowing both guest speakers to put across their views and opinions. I had a lot of feedback from many who attended saying how interesting it was. Everyone had a free drink (courtesy of WRC) on arrival and most people who came enjoyed some lovely food, purchased by themselves. This is always going to be a very divided subject, but one thing we probably all agree with is the old saying: "No foot, no horse"!
