I've been getting some BSOD's on a fresh build of a new system
with Windows 8.1 Pro and all
updates installed. I also have the latest BIOS from the
motherboard manufacturer, which is an
ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z.

See if this willl help.
Press the Winkey + r and type services.msc into the run
box and press enter.
Scroll down to Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode
Driver Framework
Right click andselect properties
Change the Startup type to Automatic
Now run devmgm t.ms c and delete all USB Hubs and then
reboot.
When Windows restarts it should automatically scan for
hardware changes and install the drivers needed.
