Aloha Everyone!

I think I can safely say that our Orchid Show change of venue was a huge

success. The various Board Members received very positive comments about

being near the ocean, the trees, the general atmosphere was just so relaxing

everyone seemed to really enjoy it.

We had a few issues come up, especially with the entrance and exit and the

way the ground transitioned to the building walkways. It became a real effort

to keep an eye on safety. We also realized that we should have had way more

volunteers for the parking detail…but I give a HUGE Mahalo to the few that

did stick it out day after day making sure people drove and parked in the right

areas. I witnessed several occasions of ‘controlled chaos’ it was riveting.

I look forward to seeing where we will be next year and I feel as a club we

will again rise to any challenge!

See you at the meeting!

Our Towers of Orchids Spring Show at the Kokokahi YWCA was WONDERFUL!

Our membership is just the best. We all pulled together and with sunny days, cool sea breezes, ono foods, and friendly people, we set the stage with a plethora of interesting, fanciful and stunning orchids.

Thousands of orchid enthusiasts roamed the hall enamored by the beauty, fragrances and variety of orchids and succulents. People enjoyed very insightful information about orchids at lectures held under a large white tent on the lawn. And, a great many visitors discovered new prized plants to add to their home or as gifts for loved ones.

Orchid Tip of the Month by Scot Mitamura

Spring is already here, but it surely seems like its already summer. Tons of orchids are in flower! Unfortunately, many of our nice Hono Honos missed our show, but we still won the coveted American Orchid Society Bronze Metal Award for our beautiful display. The strength of our society was displayed by the huge diversity of orchid types exhibited in a huge Tower of Orchids! Hat’s off to everyone that contributed plants and helped to assemble the display. It was pleasing to see many new members exhibiting plants and helping out, it really made a differ-ence. If you were like me, I purchased a bunch of orchids which I will hopefully display in the future. As a practice, I always inspect and keep any new plants in a separate area. I then water them, apply slug bait, and spray a pre-ventative all purpose insecticide. Don’t allow the free bonus plants (weeds), get into your collection, and believe me they will cost you later. I like to transplant all new plants into my own media, one that I am familiar with, and that works for my personal growing conditions. It also gives me the opportunity to inspect the root system and check for rot and insects that could lay hidden within the old media. Add some fertilizer and your new orchids will be on their way.

April’s Speaker of

the Month

Madam President, Sheron Harwood, will impart her

knowledge and experiences in bringing orchid plants

back to health. Her topic:

"Orchids Gone Bad" ..dun….dun…..daaaah….

Sheron will be bringing in some orchids that need help,

lots of help. She will talk about basic Orchid Culture

and will demonstrate repotting a few of those bad boys.

ORCHIDS GONE BAD We don’t need no

stinkin’ fertilizer. ...Wheeze...cough..

Hanging with

the wrong crowd.

With sincere appreciation, we would like to recognize

the hundreds of people that donated their skill, time,

money, trophies and lovely orchids to make our 36th

annual Spring Orchid Show such a success.
