Winery Tour & TastingEstablished in 1862 by German immigrants, this vineyard produced America's first sparkling wine. Thetwo-hundred-acre estate is recognized as a California Historical Landmark. Its tunnels were dug byChinese immigrants, and Robert Louis Stevenson was so taken with the winery that he dedicated anentire chapter to it in one of his books. In 1965, the owners acquired the historic property. Amongtheir accomplishments: the first use of Chardonnay in American champagnes, as well as the firstAmerican Blanc de Noirs using Pinot Noir in the classic way. They even revived tunnel construction inAmerica for wine aging. The family has dedicated itself to the art of creating premier sparklingwines, using the traditional méthode champenoise, and has recently begun producing still wine aswell. It’s not certain when the building was built—sometime between the1880’s and the first decade of the 20th century—but there’s no question that it is a major part of thefabric of the town. In 1987, the present owner transformed the property into its present incarnation, which includes the first brewery in Napa Valley since Prohibition. This popular hangout welcomesresidents and tourists alike, whether in the cozy bar, homey dining room or expansive, leafy patio. This beautiful restaurant is located in what once was the 1920’s-era home of a retired San Franciscoopera singer who owned a hotel across the street, and later became a prosperous bootlegger.Revived to its fabled glory and reimagined as a combination pub/hunting lodge/speakeasy, it providesrespite and refreshment after a long day of wine tasting. With its scarlet walls, dark woods and scores ofdecoys, the upstairs dining room has all the earmarks of an English duck club. Its cozy chocolateleather booths and handcrafted wooden tables add to the inviting ambiance. Similar booths now flankthe fireplace in the intimate, dusky basement bar, a popular local watering hole, which offers creativeartisan cocktails complete with hand-cut ice cubes. The lushly landscaped outdoor garden, completewith the original koi pond, is a popular spot for dining in the warmer months. The fare is “eclecticgastropub” spun with Wine Country sophistication and an emphasis on top-drawer local ingredients.

Winery Tour & Tasting

One of this area’s most gorgeous drives brings you to your first stop. Founded in 1972, this winery issituated on an oak-covered knoll overlooking 275 acres of vineyards in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley. Onlyestate-grown grapes are used to craft their elegant and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon andChardonnay. This visionary project began when fine wine in California was in its infancy, and the naturalplace to look for a model was in Europe. The founders’ overriding goal was to produce memorablewines, but also to emulate the European tradition of doing so in beautiful surroundings. They modeledthe gracious chateau and magnificent grounds after a French country estate, and started producingwines of exquisite balance and refinement. Your tour and tasting here today will no doubt show that theyhave succeeded admirably on both fronts.
