Winery Tour & TastingEstablished in 1862 by German immigrants, this vineyard produced America's first sparkling wine. Thetwo-hundred-acre estate is recognized as a California Historical Landmark. Its tunnels were dug byChinese immigrants, and Robert Louis Stevenson was so taken with the winery that he dedicated anentire chapter to it in one of his books. In 1965, the owners acquired the historic property. Amongtheir accomplishments: the first use of Chardonnay in American champagnes, as well as the firstAmerican Blanc de Noirs using Pinot Noir in the classic way. They even revived tunnel construction inAmerica for wine aging. The family has dedicated itself to the art of creating premier sparklingwines, using the traditional méthode champenoise, and has recently begun producing still wine aswell. In 1987, the present owner transformed the property into its present incarnation,which includes the first brewery in Napa Valley since Prohibition. With its scarlet walls, dark woods and scores ofdecoys, the upstairs dining room has all the earmarks of an English duck club.
