Timely Pest Control – Starts Now The four primary pests that top the list to scout for and manage as buds begin to break and expand this time of year are” Grape Flea Beetle, Climbing Cutworms, Anthracnose and Phomopsis. Grape Flea Beetle, aka Steele Beetle (Altica chalybea – Illiger)) Grape Flea Beetles are approximately 3/16” long, overwinter as adults and are steely blue in color. They tend to jump when disturbed and feed on swelling buds until they have elongated to about ½” in length. Economic treatment thresholds typically call for treating when 2-4% of the buds Adult Beetle Larva are damaged. Larval damage that shows

up a few weeks later on the leaves very seldom causes economic damage. Flea beetle populations are often localized and are near the edges of the vineyard. They also feed on Wild grapes and Virginia Creeper. Climbing Cutworms feed on emerging buds and chew on the newly expanding leaves. Cutworms are the larva of several types of Lepidoptera species of adult moths. Some cutworms originate from eggs laid in weeds and grasses by moths blown in by southerly spring winds. Others, overwinter in the larval stage in the soil and feed early in the spring. Larva can start to cause damage when they reach 3/8” to 1/2” inch in length and can feed for 2-3 weeks until they get about 1.5” to 2” in length, when they pupate in the soil and emerge as another Climbing Cutworm generation of adult moths. These unique caterpillars will climb up onto the vines at night and will return to the vineyard floor and hide during the day . Economic treatment thresholds are similar to Flea Beetles where 2-4% of the fruiting buds are being damaged. Later spring season leaf injury is generally not a concern. Anthracnose , aka Birds Eye Rot (Elsinoe ampelina) is an early season fungus disease that is primarily controlled by dormant applications of liquid lime sulfur or Sulforix just prior to budbreak. Anthracnose overwinters as dormant sclerotia that when become wet will release spores and conidia for further infection of the newly forming shoots and leaves. Temperatures in the range of 36-90°F and 12-24 hr. periods of wet weather are key to the spread of this disease. Foliar fungicide sprays for this disease should begin Anthracnose at ½” shoot lengths and continue as needed every 5-10 days depending on label recommendations. The potential of further infection declines during the summer months. Phomopsis Cane & Leaf Spot, aka Dead Arm (Phomopsis viticola) is an early season fungus disease favored by wet weather and optimum temperatures in the 50-68°F range. Leaf symptoms show up as small brown-black dots surrounded by yellow halos. Shoot infections show up as elongated lesions or cracks. Rachis infections typically occur early when the cluster first appears up through 3” shoot growth. Rachis infections can result in late season fruit drop. The fruit is infected around the bloom stage. Infected berries turn soft and brown around harvest and Phomoposis Cane Symptoms will have many small black raised pimples on the berry skin. Protectant fungicides applircations should begin at 1” shoot growth up until fruit set.

____________________________________________________________ When: June 11th, 2013 8 am - 4 pm Workshop Description: Kenneth Fugelsang, retired professor of Enology from California State University-Fresno, will present several aspects of wine microbiology. Participants will gain hands on experience using microscopic examination and other classical techniques to identify common wine and spoilage microorganisms. They will also have the opportunity to evaluate the effects of spoilage organisms on finished wines.

Show n Tell The bad news is that the Midwest Snow Storm of May 2nd & 3rd surprised all of us. North and west parts of Iowa were hit pretty hard. Reports of 12 – 14” of snow in northern Iowa, roads closed, cars in the ditch, and snow plows pulled out of storage and placed back on the trucks were common. The good news is that “Most” of our grape buds had not opened up and temperatures remained just barely above freezing. Below are some local pictures I took on 5-3-13 in the Indianola, Iowa area:

On Saturday (5-4-13) I drove over to Soaring Wings Vineyard at Springfield, Nebraska with Dave Klodd of Annelise Vineyard of Indianola, Iowa. Dave was picking up some used winery equipment he had purchased from another winery in Western Nebraska. Jim Shaw, owner of Soaring Wings Vineyard offered to transfer the equipment into the U-Haul we were driving with his forklift. Jim Shaw gave us a complete tour of his winery, brewery and vineyard while we were there. It was quite the tour. The beer and wine were very good and Jim was a very cordial host.
