When Jesus together with his discipleswas on His way to Jerusalem. He acouple of times disclosed to them hisimpending suffering and death await-ing Him in Jerusalem. How this daunt-ing revelation must have underminedthe faith of his disciples who took theirmaster for the long-awaited Messiahwho would be established a politicalkingdom in Jerusalem and in whomthey had put all their hopes. Neverhad they thought that He would usherin a spiritual kingdom founded of love,truth, justice, and peace. In light of allthis, Jesus took some step to alley theirfear and strengthen them once more.

In today’s Gospel we see Jesus takingPeter, James and John the selectgroup of three, up on Mt. Tabur toaccompany His as we goes to pray.These three, who were with Him whenHe brought Jairuse’s daughter backto life, are again with Him to witnessan enormously and excessively sig-nificant event.

As Jesus prays, His countenancechanges and His clothes turn dazzlingwhite. Then He is seen conversing withtwo important figures of the Old Tes-tament – Moses, who represents thelaw and Elijah, who represents theprophets. Both the law and the proph-ets constitute the Old Covenant. In themiddle of these two great men is Jesuswho is the fulfillment of the law andthe prophets.

These three men are talking aboutsomething and of the three synopticGospels which mention the transfigu-ration event only Luke tells about it. Itis Jesuse’s upcoming death which He isgoing to fulfill in Jerusalem. The Greekword for His death or departure is exo-dus which refers back to the whole exo-dus of the Israeli people from Egypt intheir way to their homeland.

The disciples experience the glory ofheaven and they are so overwhelmedby it that Peter proposes setting upthree tents – one for Moses, one forElijah, and another for Jesus. WhatPeter wants is that they stay wheremuch longer if not for good so to con-tinue experiencing the blissful mo-ment. Tents suggest permanency.

Jesus, however, is not amenable toPeter’s proposition. They have tocome down as He has yet to go toJerusalem in utter obedience to HisFather’s will. He has to suffer first be-fore He will have His glory to whichthere is no short cut. For the disciples,they have yet a mission or work to doafter their master’s departure.

This mountain top event has a lot ofmeaning and significant in it just as anyother important event involving ourLord has. What does this mean for theLord, the disciples, and us?

This event is meant to strengthen andencourage the Lord. It must be recalledthat during His baptism at the Jordanheaven opened and the voice of the Fa-ther was heard saying: “This is my be-loved son in whom I am please.” Withthis statement how inspired and raringto go Jesus must be as His mission getsoff the ground. What an auspicious startthis means for Him.

However, as days went on things did notturn out well for Him. Many came todislike Him with some even trying to ac-cuse Him of being in league with Satan.There was also the hardships He was go-ing through in carrying out His missionnot to mention His rejection by Histown-folks. Then there is the dauntingprospect of suffering and death ahead.

So such an event is meant to give Jesus aforetaste of glory to come which Hecould only have after passing with fly-ing colors the crucible of His Sonship.What is shown here is the new life or theresurrection which awaits Him in theend in the face of suffering. The Fatheris kind of exhorting Him to go on unfazedand undeterred, never saying die amidstthe difficulties and pain. He has beengoing through and will run into for allthis will culminate in a glorious end forHim where He will be flushed with vic-tory over sin and death. The Father isputting Him in mind that the glory ofheaven which He once left

will be His to savor once again if only heremains unswervingly and unremittinglyfaithful to the Father’s will until the end.

This transfiguration event is not just forthe Lord but also for the disciples them-selves. This is not just meant to inspirethe Lord but also the disciples. Thesemen, who erroneously think that the manthey have been following is a politicalMessiah. Bust be losing heart on accountof the troubles and hardships they havegone through as they follow Him and alsoof His disclosure of His imminent suffer-ing and death. In light of all this, the dis-ciples need to be given a shot in the arms.

Besides, after Jesus departs from thescene, they will be left to carry on Hismission which means an awful lot ofwork, hardships, and persecution. Theywill surely pass the way the Lord hastreaded – the way of the cross. So lateron when the going gets rough, they willhave some bright and glorious momentwhich they an look back on to pumpthem up and strengthen them.

Moreover, this transfiguration event isalso for us. All this serves to remind usof what awaits us in the end if we are onlyfaithful to His will. As we live, we expe-rience trials, tribulations, problems,temptations, etc. We must have thecourage to face all these things becauseGod allows them to happen to test ourfaith. He will reward us in the end.

We must know how to make sacrificesfor Christ and should experience littledeaths, dying to our corrupt-t, sinful andselfish ways. The way of the cross whichwe are called to embrace or travel leadsto Easter. St. Paul says that if we sharein the suffering and death of Christ, wewill also share in His resurrection. Inthe second reading St. Paul also says thatthe cross is our way to glorification.

The same is true in our ordinary life. Wehave to take pains if we want to gain oraccomplish something beautiful, glorious,noble, etc. Many magnificent works ofarts have been made through hard work.In anything we do pain and sacrifice is asine qua non for success. The Lord’s trans-figuration should remind us all of this.

Sure enough in life we have mountaintopexperiences, bright and joyous mo-ments. It may be the day we exchangedvows, we were ordained, we were sworninto office, etc. These are things we canlook or go back to during trying and dif-ficult moments.

They are there to inspire and strengthenus to face and overcome the challengesand difficulties at hand until the end.

These saintspossess an internal vision of divine goodness, andthey give us a glimpse of the face of God in the centerof humanity. Many times we see icons of Jesus, Mary,the prophets, and the saints displayed during Taizeprayer, but we do not worship these icons. They aremerely reminders to us that we can shape our lives toreflect the sacred majesty of God. They speak to us ofdying and rising in our daily lives through their livingexample. This is a prayer form that must be experi-enced several times before entering into it wholeheart-edly. Just like yoga or any other physical routine, youneed to become familiar with the mantras so they be-

come automatic. Simony of ecclesiastical law is, ofcourse a variable element, since theprohibitions of the Church may beabrogated or fall into disuse.

Simony whether it be of ecclesiasticalor Divine law, may be divided intomental, conventional, and real(simonia mentalis, conventionalis, etrealis). In mental simony there islacking the outward manifestation,or, according to others, the approvalon the part of the person to whom aproposal is made.

In conventional simony an expressedor tacit agreement is entered upon. Itis subdivided into merelyconventional, when neither party hasfulfilled any of the terms of theagreement, and mixed conventional,when one of the parties has at leastpartly complied with the assumedobligations.

To the latter subdivision may bereferred what has been aptly termed“confidential simony”, in which anecclesiastical benefice is procured fora certain person with theunderstanding that later he will eitherresign in favor of the one throughwhom he obtained the position ordivide with him the revenues.

Simony is called real when thestipulations of the mutual agreementhave been either partly or completelycarried out by both parties.
