Jesus was filled with the consciousness of the omnipotence and omnipresence of Health and of Life and of Strength-he was the embodiment of the Truth that heals. And while radiating this Health, he reached different people by such a variety of ways; that it is very evident that he had a super-knowledge of human nature, and a vision of God's working with each man, woman and child, that was perfect. He said that all that he did was a following of what he saw God doing. "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do," "I do nothing of myself but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things," "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." How did Jesus acquire this knowledge of the way to deal with every human being, so as to be such a great success? He tells us, in giving us directions how to do the same works that he was doing. He turns everything upon believing. "Only believe!" "All things are possible to him that believeth!" "He that believeth on me the works that I do shall he do also." "This is the work of God that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." So Jesus' success arose from his believing power. And ours is in the measure of our believing. "According to thy faith be it unto thee." Of course that believing must be in Health, not disease; in Life, not death; in Seeing, not blindness; in walking, not lameness; in Virtue, not vice; in Spirit, not matter; in Good, not evil; in God, not devil; in the Divine Self, not the mortal. And to advance in healing power we must train our believing. Sometimes Jesus was all night in prayer upon the mountains, to charge himself with this believing, and he who tells us to pray always, himself, walked communing with God, night and day. Our great goal as healers is the perfection of our Master, the great Jesus Christ, the unfailing Physician, and so surely as we are faithful and will know no case incurable, but "will pray always and never faint," all the wisdom, inspiration, love, faith and power of the greatest Healer that ever walked the earth shall be ours. --Continued on Page Six

Only BelieveBy Annie Rix Militz

While it is always Truth that heals, the methods of applying the Truth aregreatly varied with a spiritual healer.Jesus was filled with the consciousness ofthe omnipotence and omnipresence ofHealth and of Life and of Strength-he wasthe embodiment of the Truth that heals. And while radiating thisHealth, he reacheddifferent people by sucha variety of ways; that itis very evident that hehad a super-knowledgeof human nature, and avision of God's workingwith each man, womanand child, that wasperfect. He said that allthat he did was a following of what hesaw God doing. "The Son can do nothingof himself, but what he seeth the Fatherdo," "I do nothing of myself but as myFather hath taught me, I speak thesethings," "The Father that dwelleth in me,he doeth the works." How did Jesus acquire thisknowledge of the way to deal with everyhuman being, so as to be such a greatsuccess? He tells us, in giving usdirections how to do the same works thathe was doing. He turns everything uponbelieving. "Only believe!" "All things arepossible to him that believeth!" "He thatbelieveth on me the works that I do shall

he do also." "This is the work of God thatye believe on him whom he hath sent."

So Jesus' success arose from hisbelieving power. And ours is in themeasure of our believing. "According tothy faith be it unto thee." Of course thatbelieving must be in Health, not disease;

in Life, not death; inSeeing, not blindness; inwalking, not lameness; inVirtue, not vice; in Spirit, not matter; in Good, notevil; in God, not devil; inthe Divine Self, not themortal. And to advance inhealing power we musttrain our believing.

Sometimes Jesus was all night in prayerupon the mountains, to charge himselfwith this believing, and he who tells us topray always, himself, walked communingwith God, night and day.

Our great goal as healers is theperfection of our Master, the great JesusChrist, the unfailing Physician, and so surelyas we are faithful and will know no caseincurable, but "will pray always and neverfaint," all the wisdom, inspiration, love, faithand power of the greatest Healer that everwalked the earth shall be ours.

A Child’sPerspective

A group of second-graderswas quizzed about whatingredients their mothers are madeof. One child said, “God makesmothers out of clouds and angelhair and everything nice in theworld, and one dab of mean.”

To the question "What doesyour mom do in her spare time?"one youngster said, "Mothers don'tdo spare time."

When the children were asked“Why did God give you yourmother and not some other mom?”one child replied, “God knew shelikes me a lot more than otherpeople's moms like me.”

During a science lesson, asecond-grade teacher demonstratedhow a magnet can pick up metalobjects such as nails and screws.

Afterward, she said, “Myname begins with the letter ‘m.’ Ipick up things with my power. What am I?”

A boy quickly answered,“You’re a mother!”

Amaryllis

Early one spring, I planted acouple of dozen amaryllis bulbs. With great anticipation, I watchedfor blooms. But weeks turned intomonths before the first sign of lifeappeared. By the end of summer, the bed of pink flowers I’denvisioned was nothing more thana scattering of green leaves.

So I pulled them all up tomake room for other plants. Iwasn’t about to waste anothergrowing season.

Imagine my surprise thefollowing spring, when a singledelicate amaryllis blossomappeared. My delight quicklyturned to dismay — for I realizedI’d given up too soon. Had I the

least bit of patience or a little faith,I might have had a gloriousgarden.

Then I wondered: Are thereother things or people I give up ontoo soon? What might a littlepatience and faith do for a difficultrelationship or troublesomecircumstances?

On Giving and Loving

The truth comes so often insimple sentences. For example, isn’t it true that a person can givewithout real love or sympathy(maybe to impress others, forexample) but one simply cannotlove without giving? In fact, one ofthe clues to how much a personloves is how much he or she givesin terms of time, talent, friendship, service, encouragement andprayers on behalf of others.

The ThirteenCommandments

By J. Sig Paulson

Love Thy Neighbor

In the past, other lords have helddominion in our life. The false gods ofresentment, unhappiness, disease, poverty, war, and strife have long heldsway in the human consciousness. Butnow God, whose nature is love andtruth, the Lord into whose presencewe have come through faith, is takingdominion in our mind and heart. Thetrue God, the one God, is beginningHis reign in our consciousness.

We have learned that the firstgreat law of fulfillment, which wasreiterated and emphasized by JesusChrist ("Thou shalt love the Lord thyGod with all thy heart, and with allthy soul, and with all thy mind, andwith all thy strength") was thefulfillment of the first four of the TenCommandments of the OldTestament. The second commandmentof fulfillment is the completion of thelast six of those Commandments, relating to our duty toward ourneighbor.

In the gospel of Matthew we findthis report of Jesus Christ'sidentification of the greatest com-mandments: "But the Pharisees, whenthey heard that he had put theSadducees to silence, gatheredthemselves together. And one of them,a lawyer, asked him a question, tryinghim: Teacher, which is the greatcommandment in the law? And hesaid unto him, Thou shalt love theLord thy God with all thy heart, andwith all thy soul, and with all thymind. This is the great and firstcommandment. And a second likeunto it is this, Thou shalt love thyneighbor as thyself. On these twocommandments the whole lawhangeth, and the prophets."

The writers of the Old Testamentwere familiar with these laws. InLeviticus we find these words:

"Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thyheart: thou shalt surely rebuke thyneighbor, and not bear sin because ofhim. Thou shalt not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against thechildren of thy people; but thou shaltlove thy neighbor as thyself: I amJehovah .... And if a stranger sojournwith thee in your land, ye shall not dohim wrong. The stranger thatsojourneth with you shall be unto youas the home-born among you, andthou shalt love him as thyself; for yewere sojourners in the land of Egypt:I am Jehovah your God."

In Paul's letter to the Romans, heexplains how the commandment"Love thy neighbor" fulfills the OldTestament commandments: "For this,Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thoushalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal,Thou shalt not covet, and if there beany other commandment, it issummed up in this word, namely,Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thy-self. Love worketh no ill to hisneighbor: love therefore is thefulfilment of the law."

As we begin to practice the greatlaw of love, we find that we havesome amazing experiences. In the pastwe have often tried to love the humanself, and we have found that this was afruitless and a hopeless task. But nowwe are beginning to love the Truth ofour own being. We are beginning tostir up a real affection for this divinereality.

This brings us into a newrealization of our own nature. We arediscovering that we are far from beingthe limited, poor, mortal, so-calledsinners that we had believed we were.We are discovering that there issomething within us so great that wecannot even describe it. There is apower within us so completely beyondanything we have dreamed that thereare no words to tell of its nature. Thisis the presence of God within eachand everyone of us, and we mustcommit ourselves with all thefaculties, all the powers that we are, tothe love of this inner Spirit.

But we cannot love this Spiritwithin ourselves very long before wefind that it has a purpose: to bring tous a new understanding of our fellowmen. Spirit says to us, in effect:"Since I am the Truth of your being, Iam also the Truth of your fellow men,and you have an obligation to them:you shall love them as you arelearning to love yourself; you shallrecognize within them the same Spirit, the same presence of God, the sameChrist that is within you."

It is true that your neighbor isyour Self; the Spirit which you are isthe Spirit which your neighbor is. Thisis a spiritual fact, and you have no al-ternative, if you want to continue onthe spiritual path, but to love yourneighbor as you love yourself. This iswhat is going to make you grow, make you a real person in the spiritualsense.

We may say, "Yes, I canrecognize the truth that there is aSpirit of God in my neighbor, and ifhe would behave like a god, I wouldcertainly be willing to love him." Butas we discover this power of lovewithin ourselves, we realize that it isnot dependent upon any action of ourneighbor. It is our very spiritual natureasserting itself. We need to learn tolove our neighbor, regardless of whathe has done or seems to be doing; butwe have to love him as we arelearning to love ourselves, to love himas the member of a spiritual family, asour brother in God.

These are facts with which wehave to cope, and we discover thatthose who are the hardest to love arethe ones who need love the most. They are the ones whom we need tolove the most because loving themstirs up within us this inner faculty, this life- transforming power of love.It takes a real person to love hisenemy. Anyone can love someonewho has been awakened to his ownGodhood; anyone can love someonewho is kind to him and who agreeswith everything he says and does. This does not require much spiritualstature; but the one who is really

Page 5: Wings - First Unity Church of St Louis

growing is the one who is learning tolove his seeming enemies. As youcome to love the Spirit within yourselfand discover your own true nature, you have no alternative; you have toset about loving your neighbor asyourself, because your neighbor isyourself.

There is one God; there is onePresence appearing as many. Once wecome into the realization of this truthwe at least have a foundation onwhich to build. If we will rememberthe experiences through which we goourselves, we can then begin to relatethem to our neighbor. (You know, there are many things about ourselvesthat we do not love, either!)It is not too difficult to think aboutloving the Spirit of God within us, butto put this into practice is somethingelse again. To have a deep affectionfor this inner Spirit, to identifyourselves consciously with it and toserve it in all the activities of oureveryday experience, is quite adifferent thing. We can agreeintellectually that the Spirit of God iswithin every man, and that we canlove this Spirit but we have to learn tolove our neighbors as ourselves on thehuman scene. Love has to be demon-strated-not in some gold-platedheaven where we are completelysurrounded by gods who know theiridentity and are living accordingly, but on this human scene where wehave to play our human roles. This iswhere we have to learn to demonstratelove for our neighbors. This is wherethe testing comes, and this is wherethe growth begins.

But we do have a foundation onwhich to build and we can take thethree steps of affection, identification, and service. We can stir up ouraffection for our neighbor's God-selfin our time of meditation. We canbegin then to recognize that the sameSpirit, the same divine potential, thesame presence of God that weexperience (at least occasionally)within ourselves, is the Truth of ourneighbor. We can prepare our mindsand our hearts by taking a stand inwords like these: "I love the Lord my

God, the Truth of my own being, withall my heart, with all my soul, with allmy strength, and with all my mind;and 1 love the Lord, our God, myneighbor's true being also, in exactlythe same way. 1 have a deep andunshakable affection for myneighbor's true Self." This gives us astarting place, and we can then moveon to the next step, that ofidentification.

Here is a spiritual exercise youcan use: "I begin to identify myneighbor-not the one who lives at theNorth Pole, but the one 1 have towork beside today-as the Spirit ofGod. 1 am going to change myattitude toward him completely rightnow, today. 1 am going to change myattitude toward the people in my lifewho have not awakened yet (or, atleast, who do not seem to haveawakened). 1 am going to begin rightnow to change the basis of mythinking about people, and of myfeeling toward them."

This is a wonderful beginning, but you need to carry this into yourouter life. So take this further stand:"This sense of affection that 1 feel forGod and His Spirit in every person ispermanent. 1 am going to build in thisconsciousness permanently, beginningright now; and 1 am going to be ableto carry it with me out into my worldwhen 1 go to work or when 1 go tolive in my usual surroundings. 1 amgoing to remind myself throughout theday that 1 have a deep and unshakableaffection for the Spirit of God in eachone whom I meet or contact in anyway."

We need to set these thingsstraight in our own consciousness. Weneed to decide that we are going tolive in accordance with the revelationsthat are coming through to us. If wewill get this fixed firmly in our mindsand hearts to begin with, we will beable to practice this new way of livingmore effectively and morecompletely.

Amazingly enough, just such achange in our attitude toward anotherperson often seems to change thatperson and his reactions to us. But we

must not adopt a new attitude justbecause we are trying to change hisreaction, for this will surely backfire. Our changing of our attitude, ouragreeing to stop thinking of him as ahuman being with all his limitationsand irritable qualities, seems tochange the atmosphere, the climate inwhich we live. We can identify himwith the Truth of his own being, silently and in prayer first, where weare not so likely to be tripped upbecause we do not have any outer, disturbing influences. Then we carrythis into practice, and we find thatways are open.

We do not necessarily have totell him that he is a son of God andthat the Spirit of God lives within him(although we may very well do so).But we can look for and anticipateopportunities to remind him that thereis a Spirit within him, a potentialwithin him, that lifts him above pastfailures, past false beliefs, pastlimitations of any kind. You see, thisis to become a way of life. Love is notan abstraction; love is a reality. Loveis a power that has to bedemonstrated. We must move into aworld consciousness of this truth ofour fellow men, of our deep affectionfor this truth and our willingness toidentify our neighbor with the Truthof his own being.

Then, of course, we come intothe really difficult area, the area ofservice, or practice. As we learn toserve the Spirit of God within us, sotoo we must learn to serve the Spiritof God within other people. Too oftenwe have felt that to be loving and kindand forgiving is to make of oneself adoormat for the rest of the universe. Ifanyone cheats us, all we can do iswithdraw into our shell and say:"Well, that's all right. I must be lovingand forget that."

No, there is more to it than that.We have a responsibility to expect ourneighbor to live up to the Spirit that iswithin him. If I present myself as adoormat, I am just as guilty as myneighbor if he comes along and wipeshis feet on me. We must come to thepoint where we live in accordance

Page 6: Wings - First Unity Church of St Louis

with the Spirit of Truth within us, andexpect our neighbor to live up to hisdivine potential also. We are not tocondemn him when he does not do so,but neither are we to condone orignore or encourage his not doing so.

If you are a boss, an employer, you may have to transfer or dischargean employee. The important thing isthat you do it in love, that you do it inthe consciousness that the individualwith whom you are dealing is theSpirit of God. If he is unwilling toadjust himself to the particular job orwork that you have for him to do, thenit is your duty, as a loving employer,to release him, let him go, knowingthat he is going to go on to a betterway of life, a new area where he cancontinue his spiritual unfoldment. Tobe loving is not to be "wishy-washy"or to back off and hem and haw; it isto stand firm (but lovingly) in theTruth that we know, and to expect ourneighbor, encourage our neighbor, todo the same thing.

You may have a businesstransaction with someone. (You cansee how practical this matter of lovingour neighbor is; it does not concernsomething far off in the stratosphere, but our daily life here and now.) If itappears that your neighbor is trying tocheat you, what are you to do? Gohome and swallow it? Get a littleirritated inside but say nothing? No.You have a duty to expect yourneighbor to live up to his part of anytransaction. You do not serve yourneighbor's spiritual Self by allowinghim to cheat or steal from you; in fact, you do him a great disservice. Theimportant thing is the way in whichyou meet the situation and call it tohis attention. You are not doinganyone a favor if you allow him toremain in a negative or cheating stateof consciousness. As a matter of fact, you enter into his delinquency if youjust tolerate it, or condone it, or let itgo.

We do not condemn the worldfor wrongdoing, or try to force it to fitour pattern. We merely call attentionto the principles by which we live and

show that we expect the sameadherence to principle from others.

This is a practical way to live. Itis a practical way to do business. It isa practical way to treat our neighbors.Love is the only safe emotion there is.It is the only safe way we can livewith our fellow men and withourselves. Love gives all; it demandsall. Love is the toughest taskmaster inthe universe. Love is the hardestdiscipline in the universe. It is also thehappiest, the most joyous, the mostfulfilling. When we set out to followthe Spirit of God within us and let Hisnature take over and have dominion inour lives, we are headed for anexperience that is unlike anything wehave ever had.

We are to love our neighbors asourselves. We are to recognize inthem the same eternal, infinite Spiritof good, the same divine potential thatwe are beginning to love andappreciate, to identify ourselves withand express within our own life. Wehave the divine responsibility also ofhelping our neighbors to recognizeand fulfill their own identity; and wecan do it. We are learning how to doit, and as we do it, we becomestronger, we become successful, webecome more Godlike.

Let us remember that God islove. There is only one way, onecondition under which God will livein our consciousness and that is aslove--not as a weak, cowering, unhappy doormat, but as a living, pulsing, expanding, vibrant, vitalactivity that transforms the world.God in you is the Spirit of love; yourcapacity to love is your capacity to beGodlike. Your capacity to be Godlikeis your capacity to be loving.

Let us stop parceling out littlebits of affection here and there inaccordance with whether we think wewill gain something, or to rewardsomebody for something that he hasdone for us. We must let the wholecurrent of love flow through us. Let uslove the Spirit of God within. Let usidentify ourselves with it, serve it. Letus love the Spirit of God in ourneighbor. Let us identify him with it,

and let us serve this divine Spiritwithin our neighbor.

ACTION AFFIRMATION

I love my neighbor as myself. Irecognize the same eternal Spirit ofGod within him that is within me. Ilove the Lord his God with all myheart, with all my mind, with all mysoul, and with all my strength.
