ABOUT CAMP CHICamp Chi was founded in 1921 and moved next to majestic Lake Blass in Lake Delton, Wisconsin in 1957. Weare now entering our 93rd summer! Thousands of kids fromall over the world have come through our doors here atCamp Chi for a summer they’ll never forget. After a summerat Camp, campers return home with not only great memories, but with increased self-confidence in their abilities to accomplish everything from reaching the top ofthe climbing wall to negotiating social interaction.

Fun is never in short supply as we provide various activities catering for everyone’s own uniquepersonality. Our 600 acre facility features a lake to waterski on, two pools, tennis courts, a horseback riding stable, athletic fields, a large gymnasium, a radio station, a year-round conference center, miles of magnificent trails and much more. Also, did you know that ‘Entourage’ star and ‘Golden Globe’ winner Jeremy Piven once went to Camp Chi?!

Jewish values lie closest to the heart. We celebrate our Jewish believes through core values suchas kavod (respect), kehilla (community) and chesed (kindness). We host Shabbat services everyFriday and close with the customary Havdalah on Saturday evening. Some of our campers arelucky enough to have their Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvahs here at Camp!

Some campers never leave Camp Chi, our Associate Director Brad Finkel is one of them! After many summers as a camper, Brad became a counselor, an Assistant Director and now isthe Associate Director - he has done it all and your child is in safe hands. We hope that yourchild has a great summer here at Camp Chi. Our email addresses and phone numbers are opposite if you need to contact us throughout the session. We look forwarding to hearingfrom you. UNCLE ARI’S BRAIN TEASER I moved to Chicago in August. I live 2 blocks from Wrigley Field. The irony is that I spend mostof the Cubs season at camp (the only place better than Wrigley, in my opinion). But since Imoved in and the season ended, I have eagerly been counting the days to opening day for baseball. Every day I drive past Wrigley and watch as they prepare the field for another season(hopefully 2014 is our year!) I know that I am excited for baseball season, which unofficially be-gins the march towards summer for me.

I want to know what is the name of the baseball teams that won the first National League pennant in 1876? The answer can be found on page 22.

Camp Chi is going green! We’ve used a grant from the Gendler Grapevine Project to dramatically reduce our use of paper plates, plastic utensils and polystyrene cups. The biggest example of that is when we do our famous big cookouts in the Picnic Grove. We use our normal metal utensils and plastic plates instead of paper-based items. At Camp Chi, campers learn the importance oflooking after the local environment and the surroundings around them whether it be at home, at camp or at school.

This month's Giving Tuesdaywas the perfect example ofhow much Camp Chi centresaround the lives of many. Acommon theme throughoutthe posts on Facebook was the theme of ‘development’. It’s absolutelytrue - Camp Chi is the bestplace to develop as a kid. It’sdone through a blend of fun, spirit, Jewish values but most importantly by celebrating everybody’s own unique individual qualities.

Child development is ripe atChi, but what about adult development? In 2011, when I applied to be Camp Chi staffmember via Camp Leaders forthe following summer, I washardly independent. I hadnever done my own washingand drying before or been on aplane. I didn’t learn to tie myown shoelaces until I wastwelve. Initially, I blamed it on being left-handed, but deep down Iknew it was because of my stubbornness to move on fromVelcro to lace. The longest Ihad ever been away from myparents is probably a weekendcamping trip with school, butthat’s probably it. Because ofChi, I’ve become much moreindependent and positive as aperson although it almostdidn’t end up that way...

Camp Chi was my first match although, when I found out itwas a Jewish camp, I was very

hesitant. I didn't know much about Jewish customs and traditions apart from the thingsI had learned in my religion lessons at school and thought itmight have been a bit toomuch. I come from a Christianbackground, but don’t practiceany faith or religion. However,I do believe in just being agood person to whomever andwhenever there is a need – it’sgood karma and practice. I’velearned that Judaism and Ishare beliefs and a similarethos. Since becoming a mem-ber of the Camp Chi community, I have a muchdeeper appreciation and respect for the Jewish faith. Idon’t think I could get the sameunderstanding of Judaism or Israeli culture through readinga book or watching a documentary. I loved that I gotto experience two different cultures first hand and at thesame time. When there’s an international contingent ofstaff and campers, the placebecomes a hub for culture andexpression.

There are so many things I loveabout Chi – playing basketballand baseball, living with a cabingroup, being a part of a community and, of course, thegrilled cheese! But the most special thing about Chi are thecampers, especially Shoreshim. It’s an honor to share their first Shabbats, late night adventures, waterpark day and their firstnights at an overnight camp.

The unique bond that we allshare is that we are all trying tocope without our parents -some for the first time! I hopethat in some way I have inspired campers, but it’s theother way around - they haveinspired me. They’ve inspiredme to be more positive, be forward thinking and to celebrate my individual personality. They’re my heroes.

The camp experience remindsme of another one of my heroes, Captain Joe Kittinger, who rode an air-balloon up tothe edge of space and jumpedin August 1960. Armed withonly a parachute, he fell for 4minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a speed of 614MPH.

His record of highest ever parachute jump was only broken last year by Felix Baumgartner. (You know, thatguy in the Red Bull spacesuit). His daring and his willingnessto step into the unknown iswhat inspires me... or maybeI’m just an skydiving enthusiast?!

Joe Kittinger’s achievementscan be put into a simplemetaphor. Everyday we jumpout of our own air-balloons. Itmight be at work, at school ortrying something new for thefirst time. The best thing aboutCamp Chi is that when youjump, there’s always someonethere to catch you.

15Can’t hold us - macklemore & ryan lewis‘Can’t Hold Us’ was the 2013 song of the summer. In a unique twist we letthe campers choose what was going to be the song of the summer by crowdreaction at Homecoming. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis beat One Directionand Taylor Swift to the top spot by campers going absolutely crazy for ‘Can’tHold Us’ - it was the best pump up jam of 2013 - just ask the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL team that Macklemore supports. The music video for‘Can’t Hold Us’ won two MTV Video Music Awards last year for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Cinematography.

14fire & rain - james taylorMoody and introspective, ‘Fire and Rain’ became something of a prototype for the singer-songwriter genre that would boom in the few yearsfollowing its release. A relatively slow number, ‘Fire & Rain’ is a song forthose delicate memories such as Chi Burning, camp fires or the last songof a song session. The song has many interpretations to fans, guessers andeven James Taylor! In 2005, Taylor told an interviewer the song is split intothree parts chronicling three different parts of his life so far. ‘Fire & Rain’was originally released way back in 1970 and was released on the latest technology available - a 7-inch vinyl.

13drift away - dobie grayDoing research for this feature I had never heard the original version ofthis song. It’s because our Song Leaders make this song their own ever summer! A popular hit at every song session, ‘Drift Away’ encompasseseverything needed to make a good camp song - a belting chorus, crazymoves to accompany the song and perfect mix between a slow and fast chorus.

11

Page 12: WinkleMagazine06/15/14

12Bad, Bad Leroy Brown - Jim croce

If a song mentions the south side of Chicago it’s going to feature in thistop 15. ‘Bad, Bad Leroy Brown’ (or ‘Leroy Brown’ for short) was releasedin 1973 and carries on that great era of singer-songwriter’s started by JamesTaylor three years earlier. ‘Leroy’, due to his size and attitude, had a reputation as the ‘baddest man in the whole damn town.’ One day, in a bar,he makes a pass at a pretty, married woman, whose jealous husband proceeds to beat Leroy in the ensuing fight. Not so bad now are you Leroy?

11House on pooh corner - kenny Loggins

10yesterday - the beatles

Paul McCartney came up with Yesterday in a dream. Upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it. McCartney'sinitial concern was that he had subconsciously copied someone else's work(known as cryptomnesia). As he put it, "For about a month I went roundto people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heardit before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. Ithought if no-one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it.” Thisall happened in the 60s with the song being first recorded in 1965.

‘House at Pooh Corner’ is the title of a song that was written by Kenny Loggins, based on the popular children's book of the same name. The songwritten by Loggins but first performed by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in1970. The song was further released on their album ‘Uncle Charlie & HisDog, Teddy’. The book which the song was based on was published in 1928.It’s the second volume of books based on ‘Winnie The Pooh’ written by A.A. Milne. It’s notable for the introduction of ‘Tigger the Tiger’ who like Winnie became a popular character in the series.

Page 13: WinkleMagazine06/15/14

9Anything can happen - ellie gouldingThis has seen a late surge into this poll at the demand of one village in particular - Chalutzim. Ellie Goulding’s hit from her second album Halcyonbecame the adopted anthem of the 7th graders last summer. The song isabout exactly what it says on the tin - anything can happen at Camp Chi.It’s about being open to try new things and new experiences. Not only dothe themes earn it a number nine rank but it’s a pretty decent pop/danceanthem with a euphoric chorus.

8american pie - don mclean

7you’ve got a friend - james taylorAnother one of James Taylor’s classics is featured in the top 15 - ‘You’veGot A Friend.’ Written in 1971, Taylor and co-writer Carole King won Songof the Year at The Grammys. Taylor also won best Male Vocal Performance.Various artists have recorded the song over the years, including DustySpringfield, Michael Jackson, and Donny Hathaway. The song is perfect forinstalling the value of friendship; especially for the younger campers. Forthose thinking it, this isn’t the same song as featured in the Toy Story films!

The song captures Don McLean’s period of grieving for Buddy Holly whopassed away in 1959 from an air crash. Who ever said good songs never hada sad meaning? McLean said about the song when questioned: “You willfind many interpretations of my lyrics but none of them by me. Sorry toleave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwritersshould make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.” Although McLean dedicated the ‘American Pie’ album to Buddy Holly, noneof the musicians in the plane crash are identified by name in the song itself.

6time of your life - green day

‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)’ by Green Day makes number six onour chart. Written in 1994 but only released three years later, the song laterbecame a hit at prom dances, much to the band’s surprise. Vocalist BillyArmstrong had not meant it to be a romantic song, and was surprised thatit was used so. Producer Richard Cavallo wanted to add strings to the track. He sent the band to play foosball for 15 minutes whilst he did it. Cavalloreflected on his decision to add the strings "I knew we had done the rightthing. I knew it was a hit the second I heard it."

5lean on me - bill withers

4HAtikvah (The Hope) - rick recht

This song is the highlight for many at every Camp Chi Shabbat service. The credit for this song goes to Rich Recht who is a Jewish rock musicianwho is especially known for his live performances with scores of youth allover the United States as well as performances at synagogues and Jewishrock festivals. A great ‘sing-and-repeat’ number, The Hope encompasseseverything great about Chi - music, fun, togetherness and the Jewish faith.

‘Lean On Me’ was Bill Wither’s only number one single and was his thirdattempt at topping the charts. His previous two attempts, ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ went to number three and ‘Grandma’s Hands’ only reached 42.‘Lean On Me’ is really popular at Camp Chi. Easy to sing, create actionsand even create alternative lyrics to songleader Scott Serota’s dismay. Numerous cover versions have been recorded, and it is one of only ninesongs to have reached number one with versions recorded by two different artists.

14

Page 15: WinkleMagazine06/15/14

3Iris - the goo goo dollsThis song is not only one of the biggest 90s alternative rock staples in thehistory of alternative music, it is also one of the biggest crossover hits andthe most played song of 1998. ‘Iris’ was originally written for the film Cityof Angels - a romantic fantasy drama film starring Meg Ryan and NicholasCage. The soundtrack for that film became incredibly successful. Not onlydid ‘Iris’ become a hit but also ‘Uninvited’ by Atlantis Morrissette and‘Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan made the charts too. The song propelled theband to stardom, as it stayed on top of Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chartsfor a record-breaking 18 weeks, and was nominated for three Grammys thatyear. According to several interviews with vocalist John Rzeznik, he was experiencing serious bouts of writer's block when he was approached, andwas on the verge of quitting the band days before he wrote the song.

2ALL MY LIFE’S A CIRCLE - Harry chapinAll the songs in the top four are all connected to a significant period of aCamp Chi summer. ‘The Hope’ being played at Shabbat. ‘Iris’ being playedat Chi Burning. ‘All My Life’s A Circle’ is the final song that is played aftera fun, chaotic song session after Shabbat services and meal on a Friday night. The song brings emotion to the surface whilst a whole village sits in a circletaking turns to sing the lyrics. It’s an emotional one - especially when it’sthe last song session of a summer. More about the writer, Harry Chapin.Chapin was also a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger;he was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission onWorld Hunger in 1977. In 1987, Chapin was posthumously awarded theCongressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian work.

1 old saint helen -billy jonasBilly is a bit of a celebrity at Camp Chi. His main philosophy inlife is one that is similarly adopted at Camp Chi - throwing therule book out of the window. An advocate of improvisation andrecycled instruments, Billy proves that you can make somethingout of nothing. Billy Jonas is one of those rare performers whocan engage and delight both young and adult audiences. Billy'sclear tenor voice is well-suited to a plethora of venues, from intimate settings and workshop sessions to large halls and outdoor festivals. For more than two decades, his creative and interactive performances have enchanted and inspired folks from all walks of life — touching hearts, souls, and minds world-wide.As a founding member of the acclaimed duo ‘The Billys,’ BillyJonas made innovative use of "found objects." In 2010 he was invited to present a concert at The White House!‘Old Saint Helen’ is a Camp Chi classic and it’s only fitting it madenumber one on our list of all-time favourite camp songs. Obviously based on Saint Helen - a volcano in Washington state, the song is a metaphor on releasing the inner ‘lava’ in you andbeing as free-flowing as Saint Helen was when she erupted onMay 18, 1980.

Billy Jonas offersfamily and adult oriented concerts, primarily with histhree or four piece band.Billy's educational concertsinclude study guide materialsand are usually booked inconjunction with a public performance in a community.

Winkle Magazine waslucky enough a few weeksago to catch up with theman who topped our pollBilly Jonas and ask him afew questions!

Hi Billy, how are you?

I’m good thank you! I’ve justfinished a run of dates allover the US. I’ve been toDelaware, North Carolina,Baltimore and California thismonth. At the moment I’mpreparing for some shows inSouth Carolina next month.

What was the first instrument you learned toplay and when?

Piano at five years old, guitarat eight, trombone at ten. Nodiscipline though, so I graduated to pots and pans inhigh school.

Pots and Pans?! I guess youstarted using ‘recyclable’ instruments from an earlyage? Where did you get theidea of using those kindsof instruments?

It all began at Camp Chi actually, around the campfire, where, just as in a tribal culture, the lines were blurredbetween performer and audience - everybody was partof the band! Guitars, a harmonica, buckets,

sticks, rocks, and everybodysinging together - Heaven! Inhigh school and college mostof my friends were not musicians, yet they wanted toplay, so we had massive‘kitchen jams,’ playing potsand pans with chopsticks. AtOberlin College which is a bigarts school in Ohio we turnedit into a band, ‘The Big BangTheory,’ a voice and percussion ensemble usingonly found objects and homemade instruments.

Did you start performingsomewhere? What was theresponse?

After college I began writingsongs and playing them at coffee houses and ‘openstages.’ I would present themraw, with just one water bottledrum and my voice, imaginingthat if they worked in thisstriped down form, they wereworthy to develop into fullblown songs with guitar orother traditional instruments, but the response to the songsin this initial raw form was sostrong, and the smiles were sobig, that I realized they wereoften complete as they were. Iwas also imagining that whenthe songs were finished theywould have a full band playingand singing them. To approximate that, I wouldgive simple parts out to theaudience.

“Yes, I’ve shared the stage with Justin Bieber!”18

Page 19: WinkleMagazine06/15/14

Would you describe yourmusic as funky?

Absolutely!

‘Turn-of-the-21st century neo-tribal hootenanny music,’or ‘funky folk music,’ forshort.

Who do you like to listen towhen you are not performing yourself ?

Joni Mitchell, Harry Partch,Parliament-Funkadelic, IgorStravinsky, Jimi Hendrix, Maurice Ravel, Spike Jones,Pete Seeger

Have you always wanted tobe a musician?

I knew from early on that Iwanted music to be a big partof my life, but I wasn’t sure itwould be a career until itstarted to be. If I wasn’t amusician, I’d be involved withcamps and environmental education or languages.

I think I'm right in sayingBilly you used to be a staffmember at Camp Chi in themid-90s, what was that like?

Yes - I was a song leader in1995 and 1996. It was fun,and exhausting! I rememberputting my entire body andsoul into it -- there was a singalong culture at the time, but it didn't feel cohesive. I remember attempting to willthe cohesion into existence, through volume and spirit.

“Kids were extremely excited to have me

there, and to hear OldSaint Helen sung bythe originator of the

song.”

You returned last year in2013 for a Shabbat appearance, has muchchanged since you were lastthere and what have youmissed the most?

It seems that a singalong culture has taken root! I'msure it can be traced to multiple songleaders over theyears. The kids were extremely excited to have me there, andto hear Old Saint Helen sungby the originator of the song. There are more facilities, but amazingly it’s very similar to20 years ago. Camps are goodat that - keeping the good aspects for decades, so thatcampers can return with theirkids and grandkids, and feellike they are sharing something intimate. Its kindof like a time capsule - That's magical!

Where are you from?

I grew up in Chicago. My family has always been extremely musical - my great-grandfather was a cantor in asynagogue in Germany whichis pretty cool.

How important is music toCamp Chi?

There are camps where it iseverything.

At Camp Chi it seems to bemoving in that direction. Thekids and staff seem to reallyget into it.

You are the composer of anall-time Camp Chi classic(and number one on ourpoll), Old Saint Helen, canyou tell us more about thatsong?

That song popped out of mymouth as I was hiking on Mt.Saint Helen in 1990, as thecounselor for a group of tenyear olds from Camp Thunderbird, a camp fromBemidji, Minnesota. We hadflown to the Pacific Northwest for a 19 day hikingadventure. The mountain gaveme the song.

Anything else to add Billy?

I think Camp Chi offerstremendous opportunities tothe campers and staff. I’mproud to be part of their family, and to have participated in creating aCamp Chi legacy in ‘Old SaintHelen’!

WATERSK IAT CAMP CH IWATERSKI IS THE MOST POPULAR SPECIALITY AT CAMP CHI. WITH OUR PRIVATE SKIDOCK, CAMPERS CAN NOT ONLY TRY WATERSKIING FOR THE FIRST TIME BUT ALSOPRACTICE WHAT THEY’VE ALREADY LEARNED. THE MAN IN CHARGE, RYAN WHITEHEAD, SAT DOWN WITH WINKLE’S MAGAZINE TO TELL US ABOUT THE SKISPECIALITY AND HIS LOVE FOR EVERYTHING FAST & EXTREME...

Page 21: WinkleMagazine06/15/14

“When I saw Camp Chi’s skidock for the first time and sawthe lake, the boats and realisedI’d be here all summer, I high-fived everyone in arm’slength!” Ryan Whiteheadjumped at the chance to become Camp Chi’s waterskisupervisor this year - the guybreathes high-octane action. It’s all that he has everknown.“My parents have beenskiing together since before Iwas born so I've always beenaround a ski lake. When I wasaround 5 or 6, I had my firstski set and I've been hookedsince. My parents have beenthe biggest influence as theygave me my first start and havesupported me all the waywhilst entering all the competitions I could. We always use to go ski lakesaround Italy, France, Greeceand Spain – basically everywhere around The Med.”

Camp Chi have just invested$80,000 into better water facilities this summer includingtwo 2014 Moomba OutbackMotorboats which are greenerbut also a lot safer to operate. On top of that there are newsailing boats and lifejacketequipment for campers to use.As Ryan explained waterski atCamp Chi isn’t all about backflips and extreme actionbut also about general watersafety. “Waterski and wakeboard instruction beginswith waterski basics, signals

and safety. Campers build confidence and comfort usinga training boom, and aretaught further skills as they become more advanced.

Professional and dedicatedstaff is the key factor to thesuccess of the water-ski andwakeboard program. The SkiTeam and Wakeboard Teamare made up of Camp Chialumni and staff from all overthe world. Throughout thesummer, they introduce newlessons and instructional techniques to help all camperslearn how to water-ski andwakeboard. “We appreciatethat some campers have neverskied before or only ski whilstat camp so we teach them allthe basics and try and have asmuch fun as we can whilstdoing it. We also appreciatethat some kids are highly advanced as well. We want tobring those skills to an extremely high standard so weinvite talented skiers to thedocks when it’s quiet (before9AM) where we can teach andpractice advanced skills andtricks.”

Waterski is the most popularspeciality at Camp Chi alongwith High Ropes and HorseRiding which are always oversubscribed. “You never get amoment to yourself if you’re amember of the ski team butwe wouldn’t have it any otherway.” Ryan said. “It’s like a

revolving door of campersevery day. One bus leaves andimmediately two buses arrive. We enjoy it though!”

Chi’s private ski dock is locatedon Lake Delton – the jewel ofthe Wisconsin Dells’ billion-dollar tourist industry. Muchof the shoreline of Lake Delton has been developedwith summer homes, year-round homes and condos. The website of the WisconsinDells boasts that 1.5 millionvisitors visit the area everyyear.

In 2008 a nearby dam burst it’sbanks causing the whole areato flood and the lake to com-pletely drain out. “I wasn’t herethat year but I heard there wasa bit of panic among the deci-sion makers here at Camp.”Ryan said.

A famous attraction in theDells is The Tommy BartlettShow. They suffered immensely in 2008 when thelake flooded into their grand-stands and of course theirbiggest component in theirshow, the water, disappeared. The show opened days later, however, like everyone else inthe Dells, the show’s waterskiers had left for thesummer!

Now the lake is back at fullstrength and 2014 is ready forit’s best summer yet!
