Winning Infrastructure
Work With a
Sustainable EdgePaul Davies
Senior Sustainability Manager
Northwest Rapid Transit
2
A new breed……
➢ Sydney Metro Northwest is a new breed of infrastructure project
➢ Sustainability a core deliverable
➢ Australia's largest infrastructure project - $8.3 billion
➢ NRT is major contractor for design and construction
3
Where are we now?
➢ 3.5 years into project
➢ Design is virtually completed
➢ Construction is well underway
➢ 1.5 years left to finish building trains, stations, track and systems
➢ From 2019, we run the trains, track and systems for 15 years
10
This sustainable investment must be:
➢ Fit for purpose - Allow Sydney to grow sustainably
➢ Sustainable and cost efficient in construction
➢ Energy and water efficient over a 100 year lifecycle
➢ Maximise customer patronage - essential to success
➢ Minimal risk for our client (TfNSW)
➢ Minimal risk in supply chain
➢ Future proof (incl. climate change)
13
Sustainability alignment between NRT & Suppliers

by NRT and our suppliers/subcontractors

Minimise embedded carbon in materials:
▪ Sustainable (low carbon) concrete
▪ Energy efficient and recycled steel
▪ Sustainably managed forest timber
Our ‘Big 3” materials = >96% of SMNW’s carbon footprint
15
Utilities – during construction
Sustainability targets require use of:
▪ Energy efficient fittings
▪ Smart recharging plant and equipment
▪ Lighting – sensor lighting / solar towers
▪ Water lean – use non potable water
▪ Bio diesel fuel
What can suppliers offer re above?
16
Resource efficiency
“Lean Design” -
▪ Less materials
▪ Lower impact materials
▪ High recycled content
▪ Less waste in prod’n
▪ Efficient off site assembly
▪ Eco-Certified materials
What innovations can suppliers offer?
17
Create socio-economic benefits
▪ Facilitate market opps for local suppliers
▪ Develop local skills – apprentices and trainees
▪ Sustainable job creation - long term engagement
▪ Create opportunities for disadvantaged groups
▪ SMEs getting a decent slice of the pie
What can suppliers/subcontractors offer re supporting above objectives?
18
Take home messages
➢ Now a fundamental deliverable for major infrastructure projects
➢ Being embedded into government construction contracts.
➢ Increasingly a part of the evaluation of infrastructure tenders.
➢ Principal contractors include it in their procurement process (30% of NRT’s evaluation).
To win work, suppliers/subbies must demonstrate their sustainability credentials

Win work by having a Sustainable Edge
▪ Look to the future - recognise drivers
and trends in sustainable construction
▪ Not just infrastructure but in retail,
commercial, and residential areas
▪ Differentiate your offer on non-financial
aspects – it will make a difference in
tendering
▪ How will your business anticipate,
develop, adopt new sustainable
practices and products?
