    Winslow Homer

    Winslow Homer was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best

    known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in

    19th century America and a preeminent gure in American art.

    Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illus-

    trator. He subsequently took up oil painng and produced major studio workscharacterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also

    worked extensively in watercolor, creang a uid and prolic oeuvre, primarily

    chronicling his working vacaons.

    In the 1880's he moved to Prout's Neck, Maine and

    began painting scenes of the sea and coast. It is

    interesting to note the contrast in the subject matter of

    his work. His early work captured the horror of the

    Civil War, and towards the end of his life, his work

    captured the peace and serenity of the Maine Coast.

    Winslow Homer died on September 29, 1910.

    Homer was born in Boston, Massachusetts in

    1836, the second of the three children, all sons, ofHenrietta Benson and Charles Savage Homer. His

    artistic education consisted chiefly of his appren-

    ticeship to the Boston commercial lithographer

    John H. Bufford, and a few lessons in painting

    from Frdric Rondel after that. Following his

    apprenticeship, Homer worked as a free-lance

    illustrator for such magazines as Harper's Weekly.
