January 30, 2018 Winston Churchill High School
A belated Happy New Year to all and welcome back! We have just completed our first semester, passing the half way mark of the school year. For most students, successes from the first semester will carry forward to the second as they work towards their school completion goals. For
others, the semester change allows for the opportunity to plan and adjust to changes and circumstances and to refocus and recommit to goals and objectives. Learning is an ever changing progression of engagement for students through maturity and realising their own goals and potential. Working with our students as parents and teachers can definitely support their ongoing and continued growth and improvement as learners. Learning is not static; it is an ongoing and evolving growth and progression of abilities, skills and understanding.
At Winston Churchill High School, we strive to offer students every opportunity to engage in a well-rounded educational experience by offering: a wide spectrum of academic programs that meet student needs and abilities; progressive and active fine arts programs; competitive and inclusive athletic programs; comprehensive service and special interest groups; a staff that enables and encourages student success and growth. Our hope is that home and school can work together to help students make informed choices on their current school engagement and to actively plan and participate in an educational program that assists in pursuing their future goals and aspirations.
At Churchill, our global vision for high school is to be responsive to the learning needs of students by proactively providing pathways, programs, opportunities and flexible learning environments that develop motivated and independent learners that can pursue their chosen pursuits beyond high school. When students take responsibility and ownership for engaging in educational opportunities, successes will increase. Our staff works hard to support students through all aspects of their high school experience, providing support, mentorship and guidance to independence in learning and moving forward in their lives. As always, we have had a very busy semester with a multitude of co-curricular activities including athletics, fine arts, and service to the community. Semester-2 will also have many opportunities for students to engage in activities outside of the classroom. Keep an eye on the Churchill Daily and Upcoming Events posted to our web page to keep informed on current and upcoming opportunities and events. Also, please take some time to peruse this newsletter for other information that may be pertinent to you or your child.

We are also using a web tool to help you report student absences. SchoolConnects SafeArrival will allow you three methods to report absences. If you have an email account registered with us you should have received an email with account creation information in September. We will be re-sending emails to accounts not yet accessed during the first week of the new semester. 1. Call the automated interactive telephone system via a toll-free
number1-866-879-1041 to report an absence. You do not need an account to report absences using this method.
2. Log into the website, lethsd51.schoolconnects.com, to access the Parent Portal where an account can be set up to report absences.
3. Set up a Parent Portal account then download the SafeArrival app to quickly and conveniently report absences from your mobile device.
*All three methods of reporting need to be completed before 2:30 on the DAY of the absence in order for the system to not notify home of the absence. *All absence reporting should go through the Parent Portal website, SafeArrival app, or toll-free number. *Please do not contact the school directly to report absences.

Winston Churchill High School’s Career Centre supports
all students in exploring a variety of future career options.
The main goal of this department is to provide resources,
information and opportunities for students to gain
hands-on exposure in as many different occupations and
post-secondary learning areas as possible.
During first semester, students were invited to participate in Open
House events at SAIT (Calgary), University of Lethbridge and
Lethbridge College. In addition, students are encouraged to schedule
one or more full day “Student for a Day”
experiences at the post-secondary school of
their choosing (and the institution typically
picks up the cost of lunch!). Our Fall field trips
also included Trades and Agriculture program
tours at Lethbridge College, the annual World
of Choices career event for young women and a
private tour for our fine arts students at the
University of Lethbridge.
The Career Transitions organization supports our grade 11 and 12
students by coordinating twice-annual Job Shadow opportunities. For
more information on the Spring job shadow dates please see our
resident Career Practitioner, Lettie Croskery.
Got a job? Volunteering in your community? You can earn Work
Experience credits for that! Students follow a simple process of
completing a short contract and bringing in pay stubs or volunteer
timesheets to start earning up to 15 credits that count towards high
school diploma completion. These credits and corresponding marks
have been incredibly helpful to students gaining entry to competitive
university programs and qualifying for
the maximum funding available through
the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship.
Upcoming events are listed in our school
calendar and posted in our School
“Daily”. For further information about
our Career Services, please contact Lettie

2018 Grad Information
GENERAL GRAD INFORMATION
Graduation Info for Grade 12 Parents and Students
Principles that guide decision making for graduation are as follows:
Grad is accessible to all students wanting to attend.
Graduation will be about celebration and accomplishment not commercialism.
Grad is an important event and all staff, students and parents are encouraged to be part of the celebration.
Meeting grad requirements is the focus of grade 12 and Grad celebrations are organized to support this goal. Information about Grad will be shared in the newsletter, at Grad Directorate meetings and through the REMIND ME app students can join simply by texting @gradwchs18 to (587) 800-0716. Please continue to check the website for updates.

A mandatory $70.00 grad fee for all students expecting to graduate can be paid on-line, by
cash, cheque or debit in August/September when paying school fees. This fee is required to participate in graduation ceremonies.
Please know that graduates will be asked to provide a baby picture to the school for the grad video in February. An e-mail account will be given to students to provide a digital copy, or photos can be brought into the school front desk starting in February. We are excited to spend this special day and event with you. If you have questions please call Morgan at (403) 328-4723 and check our website frequently.
Important Grad Info for Parents and Grade 12 Students
1. Grad Photo Reminder
Every Graduate Needs a Photo!
Students must select one of the two options below to be included in the yearbook and grad class photo
A. Book a Grad Photo Session at Lifetouch Studio http://www.lifetouch.casouthernalberta
Call Lifetouch to book session. There is a $40.00 sitting fee and the session takes about 30 minutes. You get a variety of shots, can bring different clothes or props, and will receive multiple proofs and the availability of multiple grad photo packages when you are finished.
Lifetouch will be using a Studio located at #120-719 4th Ave South (Paramount Building), (403) 381-8955.
Or you can:
B. Get a Single Photo at School February 5th. A sign up sheet will be in the office.
This is a single photo that takes approximately 5 minutes to do. Only one pose and one shot that will be for yearbook and wall composite only. This photo is free of charge. Please know that there are not "re-take" options or other times available for these photos outside of studio time. Pictures will take place in the conference room.
2. Grad Gowns are purchased as a part of the grad fee. Students may keep the cap, gown and tassel. Students must see Angela or Sarah in the Learning Centre to be measured so the right size is ordered. We would like all measuring completed by ASAP.
3. Info Night for Parents of Grads
