    Winston Smith is a member of the Outer Party. He works in the Records Department in

    the Ministry of Truth, rewritin and distortin history. To escape !i !rother"s tyranny,

    at #east inside his own mind, Winston beins a diary $ an act punishab#e by death.

    Winston is determined to remain human under inhuman circumstances. %et te#escreensare p#aced e&erywhere $ in his home, in his cubic#e at work, in the cafeteria where he

    eats, e&en in the bathroom sta##s. His e&ery mo&e is watched. 'o p#ace is safe.

    One day, whi#e at the mandatory Two Minutes Hate, Winston catches the eye of an (nner

    Party Member, O"!rien, whom he be#ie&es to be an a##y. He a#so catches the eye of a

    dark)haired ir# from the *iction Department, whom he be#ie&es is his enemy and wants

    him destroyed. + few days #ater, u#ia, the dark)haired ir# whom Winston be#ie&es to be

    aainst him, secret#y hands him a note that reads, -( #o&e you.- Winston takes pains to

    meet her, and when they fina##y do, u#ia draws up a comp#icated p#an whereby they canbe a#one.

    +#one in the countryside, Winston and u#ia make #o&e and bein their a##eiance aainst

    the Party and !i !rother. Winston is ab#e to secure a room abo&e a shop where he and

    u#ia can o for their romantic trysts. Winston and u#ia fa## in #o&e, and, whi#e they know

    that they wi## someday be cauht, they be#ie&e that the #o&e and #oya#ty they fee# for each

    other can ne&er be taken from them, e&en under the worst circumstances.

    &entua##y, Winston and u#ia confess to O"!rien, whom they be#ie&e to be a member of

    the !rotherhood /an underround orani0ation aimed at brinin down the Party1, their

    hatred of the Party. O"!rien we#comes them into the !rotherhood with an array of

    2uestions and arranes for Winston to be i&en a copy of -the book,- the underround"s

    treasonous &o#ume written by their #eader, mmanue# 3o#dstein, former a##y of !i

    !rother turned enemy.

    Winston ets the book at a war ra##y and takes it to the secure room where he reads it

    with u#ia nappin by his side. The two are disturbed by a noise behind a paintin in the

    room and disco&er a te#escreen. They are draed away and separated. Winston finds

    himse#f deep inside the Ministry of 4o&e, a kind of prison with no windows, where he sits

    for days a#one. *ina##y, O"!rien comes. (nitia##y Winston be#ie&es that O"!rien has a#so

    been cauht, but he soon rea#i0es that O"!rien is there to torture him and break his spirit.

    The Party had been aware of Winston"s -crimes- a## a#on5 in fact, O"!rien has been

    watchin Winston for the past se&en years.

    O"!rien spends the ne6t few months torturin Winston in order to chane his way of

    thinkin $ to emp#oy the concept of doublethink, or the abi#ity to simu#taneous#y ho#d

    two opposin ideas in one"s mind and be#ie&e in them both. Winston be#ie&es that the

    human mind must be free, and to remain free, one must be a##owed to be#ie&e in an

    ob7ecti&e truth, such as 8 9 8 : ;. O"!rien wants Winston to be#ie&e that 8 9 8 :
