that death is not the end…For many years Ihave not heard that song. I almost complete-ly forgot it ever existed. But then, suddenly, acouple of weeks ago, the Nick Cave renditionof an old Bob Dylan song started to hum inmy head. It was on a gloomy, snowy Sunday

in the middle of February, and I received aphone call with bad, really bad news. Onlythree days later the song became even louder,after I had learned that yet another goodfriend has left this world.

But then, slowly but persistently, a com-pletely different song started to take over.Satchmo, the jazz genius from New Orleans,

came with his What a Wonderful World. A sen-timental song, that, if sung by anybody else,would taste like sweet candy covered withhoney. But Satchmo, a child of the streets,who suffered more than his share in a raciallydivided world, had deep scars made by life onhis soul and in his heart. You need those scarsfor the words “and I think to myself, what aWonderful World” to come out of your mouthand not sound ridiculous – as there is nodoubt the world is wonderful. But it is defi-nitely not candy covered in honey. Sweet andfull of hope, yes – on one side – but definitelybitter and mixed with sorrow on the other,exactly as Louis Armstrong (Satchmo) singsabout it.

There are people who make this worldmuch better, sometimes even wonderful.They usually keep the bitter parts to them-selves and give all they can to us. Satchmo isone of them. Pavel and Blanka are the othertwo. This issue of the Bohemian State of Mindis humbly dedicated to their memory.

best teachers- the strong,the wise andthe coura-geous whowere locked-up with him.Immigratedto Canada in 1980 and for the next thirtyyears he kept on giving to his audience -behind the helm and on the stage of the NewCzech Theatre.

Blanka embodiedthe pre-war Czecho-slovakia of Masaryk inmany aspects – man-ners and character oftime long gone, classy,yet spontaneous andhappy, hard-workingand tough as nails.With her mantra “youcan tell people theharshest truths, butyou should do it witha smile and class”, shedid not shy away from standing up againstinjustice anywhere and against anybody as sheworked tirelessly for Bohemians in Canadafor more than fifty years.

I have never been sure to whatextent I could see myself as themaster of my destiny, and towhat extent I should see my lifeas the result of forces mostlybeyond my control (parents,appearance, talents, health).Although everything we do isinfluenced by circumstancesoutside ourselves, there are deci-sions, which are markedly anexpression of our most essential“I”. For example, to join anarmy during the war. In ournarrowing circles I know onlyvery few, who made that deci-sion. Three of them - JosefHynek, Josef Svaton and Karel Wolfe received fromthe hands of the Czech Consul General in Torontoa decoration, the Cross for Merit of the Minister ofDefence, III. Class. They are a splendid group oflast Mohicans.

Josef Svaton served for several years in the Armyright after graduation from the Military Academy.After the country was occupied by the Germans, hejoined the newly formed Czechoslovak army inFrance, and later in England. He bravely participated –as a battalion commander – in the fighting aroundDunkerque and other places. He married Elsie, anEnglishwoman who served in the naval service forwomen and took her to his homeland. But, aftercommunist regime took over and life of those fight-ing with western powers became difficult, Josef andElsie along with their young daughter Anna left forEngland and subsequently for Canada.

The family soon bought a farm and Josef workedfor de Havilland company and later as a statistician

for the Ministry of Forests andFarms. In the 1990s he was pro-moted to the rank of colonel, retof the Czech Army. When askedhow they managed to enjoy sucha wonderful relationship evenafter seventy years of marriage,Mrs. Svaton replied: “We prom-ised it not only to ourselves, butalso to God.”

Josef Hynek volunteered tohelp defend his country in1938. After assignments withan antiaircraft unit in Prague,Josefov, Uzhorod and Olomoucand subsequent occupation ofhis country he followed his fam-

ily to Canada. In 1941 he was not allowed to jointhe Czechoslovak army in Great Britain for beingmarried with children. Therefore he spent the waras an instructor of thousands of Canadians in thetraining stations. In 1999 he was, by the order ofthe Czech minister of defense, promoted to the rankof colonel, ret.

In later years, he wrote a splendid one-sentence history of the First World WarCzechoslovak legions: “It is worthwhile to note,that the Czechoslovak armies of the First WorldWar, composed of the Czechs, who for 300 yearslived under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty andthe Slovaks, who for 1,000 years have been underthe heel of the Hungarian Lords, were able toorganize, outside their own country, an army, whichmarched across the Russian Empire, sailed thePacific, the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans, the EastChina and Mediterranean seas, and moved rightacross the U.S.A. and Canada – a feat no other

army of any other nation has ever accomplished.” The youngest of the decorated men is Karel

Wolfe, who joined the Czechoslovak army in Franceand later in England, where he served, for a time, ina unit guarding President Benes. He served in the1st Czechoslovak armoured division, going all theway from Dunkerque to Pilsen. In the early 1950 hefled to Canada. After 1990 Karel Wolfe was promoted to the rank of colonel, ret., decorated by

Czechoslovak War Cross (Cs. valecny kriz) and amedal for bravery (Medaile za chrabrost).

And now a few words about the non-decorated(at this occasion) František Tesar. This is the way,Frantisek described his military career, which beganwith a course for parachutists: “They went jumping,first from an air baloon and then from an airplane.

It all ended well, noinjuries, only one manlost his watch, but weeventually found it. Wewere sent to France,where we kept in checkthe Germans in theoccupied Dunkerque.”Frantisek Tesar is adown-to-earth man –and this is what he saysabout his medals: “Ihave about six of them,but there are not thebig medals, such as the War Cross and medals ofthat nature.”

On October 28, 2010, (it was a wet and coldday) a few weeks before his 96th birthday, Frantisekstood more than an hour at attention and practicallywithout a movement (together with a man Iconsider the greatest Sokol of his generation, JanWaldauf ) in front of the Ontario Parliament, at theoccasion of hoisting the Czech flag to honour CzechIndependence Day. And just prior to Christmas, hetreated his visitors to wonderful Christmas cookieswhich he had personally baked.

The users ofTripAdvisor* webserver chose Prague’shotel Golden Well(U Zlate studne) asthe best luxury hotelin the world.

“We are very, veryhappy about thisaward ”, says PetraDaliborova, the PRManager of GoldenWell Hotel, “at the

same time, there is always room to get even better inthe future.”

Golden Well is only a small hotel in the LesserTown in Prague which is not a part of any big hotelchains. There are only twelve rooms and mostclients stay there on special occasions such as wed-dings or engagements.

Guests appreciate the location of the hotel that isdirectly next to the Prague Castle walls. As welearned from Marcus Bernardini, a Toronto physi-cian who has just returned from Prague. “We lovedstaying at The Golden Well. The proximity of thePrague Castle and exceptional service made us feellike true guests of the Czech king.”

Guests also like the quality of service provided bythe local personnel who, among other things, offer a‘pillow menu’. Guests can choose from seven differ-ent kinds of pillows and also decide upon the waytheir bed will be made. Another treat provided bythe hotel’s staff is special desserts made by the chef,which are served after dinner.

As Petra Daliborova says, “It shows that a goodidea and good personilized service can compete withlarge chain hotels.”

The hotel, which received the award as the bestluxury hotel in the world last year in the same sur-vey, also has a rich history dating back to the 16thcentury. Rooms are decorated in the Richelieu style.Prices range from 254 to 700 euro a night.

Guests also praise the meals served there. Therestaurant Golden Well Terrace even appeared insecond place in the restaurant category of theTripAdvisor survey. Surprisingly, no US hotel madeit into the top hotels. While Europe has six hotels inthe top ten, Africa, the Caribbean, South Americaand Asia have only one each.

Antonin Kubalek, the most gifted Czechpianist of his generation, died on January19, 2011

He left Czechoslovakia for Canada in1968. Shortly after his arrival he estab-lished himself as a soloist with theToronto Symphony and taught at TheRoyal Conservatory Music. He was regu-larly featured on CBC radio. GlennGould heard Kubalek on CBC Radio andwas so impressed with his talent, that heproduced Kubalek’s performance of The

Second Piano Sonata by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.Executive Director of The Glenn Gould FoundationBrian Levine much later noted that “this was theonly time Gould ever did this for another pianist.”

As one of the finest interpreters of the music ofJohannes Brahms and Robert Schumann, Kubalek

also had an affinity for the music of his homeland,especially the composers Antonin Dvorak, JosefSuk, Bedrich Smetana and Leos Janacek. With play-ing that has become synonymous with “perfectionof style, precision and beauty of sound and interpre-tation” he belonged among the most prominentpianists in North America.

The Bohemian community in Canada is sadlystripped of yet another incredible musical talent. Inrecent years, three other talents have passed away:opera singer and actor Jan Rubes, composer OskarMorawetz and a bohemian, not by birth but inheart, Canadian Opera Company Artistic andGeneral Director Richard Bradshaw.

Antonin Kubalek is survived by his second wife,Patricia, and daughter, Karolina, who is pursuingpiano studies in Prague. A musical memorial servicewill likely be organized in the spring.

CZECHS FURTHEST FROM POVERTYAMONG THE EU NATIONSAccording to the German Statistical Office, theCzech Republic has the lowest proportion of peopleat risk-of-poverty in the entire European Unionwith 8.6 percent of the population affected. ROZMBERK, Czech Republic — As our motleycrew wrestled one of Petr Putzer’s inflatable raftsdown the rocky river bank at Vyssi Brod, the VltavaRiver stretched before us, winding northwardthrough 400 km and thousands of years ofBohemian enchantment.

Rising in the dark mountains of the BohemianForest — the Sumava — behind us, the river wouldtake us — if we let it — through the entireKingdom of Bohemia past the fairytale castle seat ofthe Rozmberk dynasty, through the medieval,UNESCO-protected city of Cesky Krumlov (whichlater became their capital) and the more modern cityof Ceske Budejovice (home of the real Budweiserbeer), under the magnificence of Prague’s CharlesBridge and finally deliver us into the conjoinedmight of the River Elbe 35 km north of Prague.

But we weren’t going that far. Our destinationwas Rozmberk nad Vltavou, only 10 km away yetstill a three-hour adventure of white water, blissfulBohemian countryside and, rounding the final bendof our journey, a stunning view of Rozmberk Castle— a gothic fortress and Renaissance palace withbaroque architectural stylings and a town dating tothe 13th century at its feet.

But let’s start at the beginning. The very nameBohemia resonates with romance and excitement,adventure and mystery. And so it should: Bohemiais the very heart of central Europe, a fertile crucibleof rolling landscapes and majestic medieval townsencircled by chains of protective mountains. But themountains have never stopped hordes of invaders —from Huns and Habsburgs to Nazis and Soviets —rolling in to occupy the rich Bohemian basin.

Because of the central role (both culturally and

militarily) Bohemiahas played in muchof Europe’s history,it is not surprisingthat Bohemia is aland of castles —with more castlesthan any othercountry in Europe by almost every measuring stick.These range from imposing and impregnable moun-tain fortresses to grand chateaux and fancifulBaroque palaces to Prague Castle, the magnificentseat of Czech government looking down in all itsHoly Roman Empire majesty on the old town ofPraha (Prague) across the Vltava River.

The ancient Romans were the ones who dubbedthe region Boiohaemum — land of the Boii, aCeltic tribe inhabiting the area when the Romanlegions marched in. So the whole romantic notionof “Bohemia” — from the Bohemian artists of 19th-century Paris to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody — isas much a mythical creation as Brigadoon. And yet... and yet ... Bohemia does exist. And when you arethere, paddling down the Vltava past 13th-centurymonasteries and farms that have been cultivated fora millennium under the shadow of the Sumavaforests, you know you are in Bohemia and nowhereelse in the world.

I was part of a group of two dozen travellers whoentered the waters of the Vltava in a small flotilla ofinflatable six-person rafts on an early-summermorning. After about an hour and a half on theriver, our small armada pulled into the quiet, woodedriverbank where, lo and behold, a rough but verywelcome rustic cafe awaited us with cold bottles of

To anorthodox European beer aficionado it seems thataggressive marketing is behind the driving wheel inthe US and Canadian markets, while quality of thebeer takes a back seat. Kudos to the marketing teamsthat succeed in persuading the target audience todrink gallons of beer by making self declarations ofroyal status, inventing nonsensical categories such as“drinkability” or adding unnecessary perks such asbeer stored in a “cold-activated can”.Thankfully, in every desert there is an oasis and thereare two lush oases in Southern Ontario – micro-breweries Steam Whistle and Creemore. Both ofthem have an interesting Czech connection that will

Czech beer and snacks to take the edge off latemorning hunger. Sipping a sharp, crisp lager andstretching cramped legs while basking in early sum-mer sun on a bucolic Bohemian riverbank has to beone of the most satisfying experiences in the world.

Then it was back on the river for the second halfof our journey — and an incredible, enchantingending to the raft trip. As we rounded the last bendin the Vltava before our destination of Rozmberknad Vltavou, the rolling, forested hills on our rightrose more steeply from the river. And there it was —the castle of the lords of Rozmberk, rulers of muchof South Bohemia for 10 generations.

Below the castle and across the river is the villageof Rozmberk Nad Vltavou, unbelievably quaint,ancient and untouched by tourist mobs. There areseveral small restaurants and pensions if you chooseto stay the night, but one place you cannot miss isan old stone and wood building beside the river —

Hotel U Martina. At long wooden tables on the sunny patio or in

the vaulted dining rooms, you will feast with localsand fellow travellers on the finest meats and vegeta-bles, prepared and served in traditional fashion, thatSouth Bohemia has to offer. You can’t go wrong withthe roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut. It’s thequintessential Bohemian country inn, an experiencethat cannot be missed.

And after the perfect raft ride and luncheonfeast, the cold, golden Czech beer flows long andleisurely through a Bohemian summer afternoonlike the Vltava flows through the romance and beauty of the Bohemian countryside.
