There are at least two farms inKentucky that are older than theBluegrass State itself.

The legislature in Virginia, of whichKentucky was once a part, originallydeeded Oak Lawn Farm in WoodfordCounty in 1780, 226 years ago. Ken-tucky became a state 12 years later, in1792.

The Gregg-Hardin-Stalker Farm inShelby County came along in 1785when the Virginia legislature issued aland grant of 9,750 acres in what wasthen Jefferson County, Va.

The farms are two of only a handfulstill operational in Kentucky that havebeen owned by the same family for atleast 200 years. A book published in1994, “Kentucky’s Historic Farms,”listed 39 bicentennial farms in the state.

KDA building new labto help gas consumers

A new motor fuel laboratorywill help the Kentucky Depart-ment of Agriculture do an even

better job of making sure Kentuckymotorists get their money’s worth atthe pump. The lab was approved inthis year’s session of the GeneralAssembly.

The $1.65 million lab will be an im-portant weapon in the KDA’s consumerprotection arsenalat a time whenKentuckians arepaying nearly $3for a gallon of gaso-line. The Depart-ment is required bylaw to test gasolinepumps for accuracyand check the qual-ity of motor fuel ateach of the 3,500registered motorfuel retailers in theCommonwealth.

“As a consumer protection and ser-vice agency, we test gas pumps to makesure Kentuckians get what they paytheir hard-earned money for,” Agricul-ture Commissioner Richie Farmer said.“We also test fuel quality to ensure that

The Kentucky Agricultural Fi-nance Corporation has created aBeginning Farmer Loan pro-

gram that will be administeredthrough lenders with offices located inKentucky.

This program is designed to assistapplicants in formulating a businessplan, securing needed expertise, andreceiving the capital to prepare theirfarming operation for a successfulfuture.

The Kentucky Agricultural Devel-opment Board (KADB) approved$2 million earlier this year for thisprogram. The KADB in its Novemberplanning meeting revised its GuidingPrinciples to include: “The Board will

seek programs to enhance the viabilityof young farmers and part-time farmersin agriculture.”

These funds will be made availableto producers meeting eligibility criteriaestablished by KAFC. There must be acommitment by a “lead lender” to workwith the borrower to implement thefive-year business plan and to provideadditional financing as the borrowerbecomes eligible. Also, identification ofa mentor who is willing to advise theborrower on record-keeping and busi-ness analysis during the term of theloan will be required. Other require-ments are as follows:

1. A beginning Farmer or Rancheris defined as:

• A person who has not oper-

ated a farm or ranch for morethan 10 years.• A person who has substan-tially participated in the busi-ness operation of a farm orranch for at least three years.• A person who does not owna farm or ranch greater than 30percent of the average farm orranch size in the county wherehis or her operation is located.

2. The applicant and spouse, if ap-plicable, must have a net worth ofless than $250,000.3. The applicant’s personal off-farmincome must be less than $50,000annually, and the total householdincome must be less than $75,000.4. An interest rate of 2 percent will

be offered, and the rate will befixed for the term of the loan. A 1percent servicing fee will be addedto the KAFC rate by the lender.5. Maximum loan term will not ex-ceed 10 years, and there will be nopenalty for early prepayment.6. All loans will be secured withboth fixed assets and the personalguaranty of the borrower.7. The applicant must provide afive-year business plan showing areasonable return and an ability toretire the KAFC debt.Lenders interested in offering this

Kentucky starts program to help new farmers get capital

Kentucky doesn’t become a dumpingground for bad gas and to enforce ourstate’s ban on MTBE.” MTBE, or methyltertiary butyl ether, is a fuel additivethat has been banned in Kentucky andother states because it has been found tocontaminate groundwater.

Years of budget cuts, explodingcosts and rising demand have affectedthe Department’s ability to test motorfuel for quality and inspect fuel pumpsfor accuracy. Fuel tests currently are

performed by acommercial lab inNashville, Tenn.The skyrocketingcost of the test hasforced the KDA toreduce the numberof tests it makesfrom 6,000 whenthe programstarted 20 years agoto 600 this year.

“There were3.4 billion gallonsof motor fuel pur-

chased in Kentucky last year, so 600samples representing 3.4 billion gallonsis not acceptable,” said Tom Bloemer,administrative branch manager of theKDA’s Division of Regulation and In-spection. Less than 10 percent of the

samples fail the test, which measuresstandards mandated by the AmericanSociety for Testing and Materials(ASTM) ranging from foreign matter inthe fuel to its octane rating.

Having its own lab will enable theKDA to resume testing at the previous6,000- to 8,000-sample level. Bloemerwould like to see the number increaseto 10,000 to 15,000 samples of gas anddiesel. The lab also will allow the KDAto increase its biodiesel testing andbegin sampling ethanol as the numberof biofuel pumps in the state increases.

The lab’s target date to become op-erational is July 2007. It will be locatedinside an expansion of the KDA’s Office

“It could create a revenue stream,”Commissioner Farmer told a legislativecommittee in its recently concluded ses-sion. “I think it’ll pay for itself in a rela-tively short period of time.”

Less than 7 percent of the state’spumps failed to meet state standardsfor accuracy in 2005. If you suspect thata pump may not be accurate, call theDivision of Regulation and Inspection at(502) 573-0282. An inspector will testthe pump, usually within 48 hours ofnotification.

Agriculture: It’s your future.”That is the theme of the Ken-tucky Department of Agri-

culture’s exhibits at the KentuckyState Fair Aug. 17-27 at the KentuckyExposition Center in Louisville.

“The state fair has traditionallybeen a showcase of the best Kentuckyagriculture has to offer,” AgricultureCommissioner Richie Farmer said. “TheDepartment’s theme and displays thisyear will show how important agricul-ture is in the everyday lives of Kentuck-ians and how it will become even moreimportant in years to come.”

The KDA’s kid-friendly SouthWing exhibits have been redesignedand will fea-ture the jour-ney grainmakes fromseed to thelivestock feedtrough and toour plates. Areal cattlechute withscales will beon display. An-other part ofthe exhibit willfocus onbiofuels such as ethanol and biodieselmade from corn and soybeans grown inKentucky. Another exhibit will showunusual products made from corn, suchas carpet and cat litter.

Among the interactive exhibits willbe an all-terrain vehicle with a globalpositioning system (GPS) on it, showinghow the ATV can be found in the eventof a rollover accident. The exhibit willexplain how farmers are using cutting-edge GPS technology to save money onfertilizer and pesticide.

Other exhibits will feature:· a remote-controlled tractor

course, where kids can learn about farmsafety and crops;

· an agriculture mural that thekids can color; and

· the popular chick hatch, wherefairgoers can watch baby chicks hatchfrom eggs in a glass incubator.

The KDA’s West Hall display willfeature the Department’s one-of-a-kind

tractor rollover simulator; the Smart-board interactive computer, wherepeople can test their agricultural knowl-edge; exhibits of fruits, vegetables, bees,tobacco, hay and grain; a KentuckyProud products booth, and a secondchick hatch. The KDA’s Office of Con-sumer and Environmental Protectionwill host a booth that displays how theDepartment affects the lives of everyKentuckian every day. A KentuckyProud tent will be outside the WestHall.

The fair will kick off Aug. 17 withthe Commodity Breakfast, the KDA’sannual salute to Kentucky’s farm com-modity organizations. The country hamshow will follow, and the grand cham-pion ham will be auctioned for charity

at the KentuckyFarm BureauCountry HamBreakfast onAug. 24.

Division ofShow and FairPromotion staffwill work thelivestock showsthat will takeplace through-out the fair,and Division ofAnimal Health

staff will check health papers for all ani-mals entered in the shows. The livestockschedule includes: dairy goats, poultry,pigeons and rabbits, Aug. 17-20; dairycattle, Aug. 17-21; mules and jacks,Aug. 17-24; miniature horse show, Aug.25-26; boer goats, Aug. 18-22; sheep,swine and beef cattle, Aug. 22-27, anddraft horse pull, Aug. 27.

Again this year, Department staffwill spray for mosquitoes and inspectamusement rides for safety.

Headlining concerts will be theAmerican Idols Tour, Brad Paisley withCarrie Underwood and Eric Church,Rascal Flatts with Gary Allan, andMontgomery Gentry with Joe Nichols.

The World’s Championship HorseShow will be Aug. 20-26. More than2,000 horses will compete for $1 millionin premiums.

Second season launches Aug. 22

The second season of AgricultureAdventures: Kentucky will rollout in August after a successful

inaugural tour.“Agriculture Adventures: Ken-

tucky” is an entertaining and educa-tional program designed to teachKentucky schoolchildren about the im-portance of agriculture. It is a produc-tion of the COSI science museum inColumbus, Ohio.

“One of the most important thingsthe Kentucky Department of Agriculturedoes is educate Kentucky children aboutagriculture’s impact on their everydaylives,” Agriculture Commissioner RichieFarmer said. “‘Agriculture Adventures:Kentucky’ enables our young people tohave fun and learn at the same time. It’san outstanding program.”

The new season will start Aug. 22at Potter Gray Elementary School inBowling Green.

COSI had taken 65 reservations forthe coming school year by mid-June.Last year, the program was given to41,088 students in 104 performances.

Chef Parmesan and Derby thehorse host the entertaining “LunchRoom Live” program in which theytake children through the process ofgrowing the ingredients to make pizza.Following the program, students get tomilk a fiberglass cow, grind wheat intoflour, test soil samples and participatein many other hands-on activities.

Organic ag offers opportunitiesThere’s nothing like a

fresh, ripe tomato, an earof sweet corn or a mess

of green beans that was pickedfrom the garden the samemorning or the day before.

Here in Kentucky, early gar-dens are bursting with lettuce,broccoli, cauliflower, peppersand much more. The “stars” ofKentucky’s vegetable harvest arecoming on now, or will soon.Kentucky’s 98 farmers’ marketsare shifting into high gear. Ken-tucky Proud produce can be found instores and restaurants that participate inthe Kentucky Department of Agri-culture’s marketing program for foodsraised, grown or processed in theCommonwealth. State resorts bought$21,491.45 of produce from Kentuckygrowers last year, and I expect that num-ber to go up as growers and resort chefsdevelop better working relationships.

Perhaps the fastest growing – andpotentially most lucrative – produceniche is organic. Consumers are willingto pay extra for certified organic foods.Large retailers are ramping up their or-ganic offerings to meet the skyrocketing

demand. Producers who raise theirproducts according to federal organicstandards can significantly increase thevalue of their products and the size oftheir bottom lines.

By mid-June, organically raisedcommercial yellow corn was bringing$4.50-$6.75 per bushel compared with$1.78-$3.23 for conventionally raisedyellow corn, according to The NewFarm Organic Price Index. The lowest-priced organic strawberries were get-ting 9 percent more than thehighest-priced conventional strawber-ries. Organic cantaloupes wereoutpricing conventional cantaloupes by

24 percent and more. Organictomatoes and green bell pepperswere fetching up to 2½ times asmuch as conventional.

The Kentucky Departmentof Agriculture is authorized tocertify organic farm operations.At this writing, Kentucky had 27organic producers and 1,986.5acres under certified organicproduction. Our organic pro-gram coordinator, Jake Schmitz,expects to certify up to 50 pro-ducers by the end of the year.

To be certified organic, you have toraise your crops and/or livestock in ac-cordance with National Organic Pro-gram standards. You also have to staycurrent with the required paperwork.When you take the time to get certified,you assure the consumer that you areproducing food that is organic by federalstandards. You also are helping maintainthe integrity of the program, and thatadds value to your organic operation.

culture staff saw a Rocket Relaunch.Pitcher Roger Clemens’ first outing

of the year coincided with Farmers/Dairy Night at Applebee’s Park, homeof the Lexington Legends. Clemenspitched three innings for the Legends inhis initial tune-up for his comebackwith the Legends’ parent club, theHouston Astros.

The event was the high point of theLegends’ season-long Kentucky Proudpromotion. The club sells KentuckyProud foods at its home games.

“I am very excited about this part-nership,” Commissioner Farmer said.“Kentucky Proud producers have a newmarket for their products. The Legendsget to serve Kentucky Proud foods to

their customers. Fans will discover whynothing else is close to Kentucky Proud.It’s a home run for everybody.”

“There is nothing better in theworld than authentic Kentucky,” Lex-ington Legends President and CEOAlan Stein said. “The Lexington Leg-ends are one of those, and we arethrilled to be able to team up with Ken-tucky Proud. Showcasing the best of thebest, Kentucky products at Applebee’sPark seems like a match made in Ken-tucky heaven!”

“There may be another farm inKentucky that’s been in existencelonger, but I don’t know of it,” saidHoppy Henton, who lives in the statelybrick farmhouse, which was built in1810 at the end of a tree-lined driveway.

Tobacco and beef cattle have beenconstants on the farm since its origin.Hoppy is one of a shrinking number offarmers who continue to raise tobacco,despite the buyout that ended govern-ment price supports two years ago.

“Tobacco is the only thing thatmakes any money,” Hoppy said. “Itdoesn’t matter if you have 20, 50 or 100acres. You can put in corn, soybeans,alfalfa, cattle, but nothing compares totobacco, even as it is now.

“I’ve quit tobacco a lot of times. I’mconvinced it’s something I should diver-sify away from. But I’m like a smoker –I always come back to it.”

Oak Lawn Farm is diversified with100 acres of corn, 80 acres of soybeans,50 acres of tobacco, 40 acres of winterwheat that is being harvested, and amixed herd of 45 cattle, mostly blackAngus. He tends all that with the helpof only two farmhands.

Hoppy’s son, Nathaniel, works as achef in Midway for Holly Hill Inn, amember of the Kentucky Department ofAgriculture’s Kentucky Proud market-ing program. He also works part-timeon the farm, raising freshwater prawnsin a half-acre pond. “That little pondgenerates about $5,000 per year,”Hoppy bragged.

Since he started farming full-timein 1975, Hoppy has seensome major changes in thebusiness. What once was alifestyle passed down fromgeneration to generation hasevolved into a business.

“The biggest change isthere are just not manypeople left doing it,” he said.“And the ones that are aredoing it on a much larger scale. Theyhave a lot more capital invested and alot less labor, so their risk has expandedexponentially.

“I spend more money on communi-cations – like cell phones and fax ma-

chines – than my father spent on dieselfuel!” added Hoppy, who also operatesa consulting business, Henton FarmManagement.

Gregg-Hardin-Stalker Farm

Located two miles west ofSimpsonville on U.S. 60, the farm is

best-known for being thebirthplace of the grand-mother of former PresidentHarry Truman. HarrietLouisa Gregg marriedSolomon Young and movedto Missouri. Their daughter,Martha Ellen, was Truman’smother.

The future presidenttraveled to the farm in 1932, accordingto “Kentucky’s Historic Farms,” to visithis cousins in the home built by hisgrandfather, William Gregg. That wastwo years before he entered nationalpolitics in 1934, when he was elected a

senator from Missouri. Truman was afarmer for 12 years in his home state.

The Gregg-Hardin-Stalker Farmcurrently consists of 60 acres, 45 ofwhich are part of the original 208 acrespurchased by David Gregg on April 18,1803. Thirty-five acres are still beingharvested for hay. Up until two yearsago, owner Charles Stalker grew to-bacco and raised both dairy and beefcattle before quadruple bypass heartsurgery forced him to stop farming.

“Last year was the first year Ihadn’t had a tobacco crop in over 50years,” Stalker said. The biggest changehe saw during that half-century was themechanization of farm work. “I wentfrom milking cows by hand to a modern[automated] milking parlor at the end.”

Stalker, 74, is the sixth generationin his family to own the farm. He stilllives in the historic farmhouse on theproperty with his wife, Violet.

“There’s been somebody in myfamily here for 200 years,” Stalker said.“My uncle was born here, and I eventu-ally moved here in 1969. This house isalmost 200 years old.”

The rear of the brick house datesback to 1803, and the two-story frontwas added in 1837. The home was en-tered into the National Register of His-toric Places in 1984. William Gregg,David’s son, expanded the farm to aslarge as 1,500 acres in 1870.

Besides David Gregg, another manwho purchased property as part of theVirginia land grant was John Simpson,after whom the town of Simpsonvillewas named.

The Purchase of AgriculturalConservation Easements(PACE) program did not receive

funding from the Kentucky GeneralAssembly for the 2006-2008 fiscal bi-ennium in the 2006 legislative session.

“The PACE board is disappointedthat funding for this valuable programwas struck from the budget,” boardChair Frances Ann Brown said. “Fed-eral grants are awarded on a dollar-for-dollar matching basis, so the lack ofstate funding will hamper our efforts toaccess federal money.”

PACE program coordinator BrentFrazier said the program still has fundsavailable to cover administrative costs forservices such as surveys and legal workassociated with acquiring donations.

The PACE program buys and ac-cepts donations of agricultural conser-

vation easements. Conservation ease-ments ensure that the land will remainavailable for agriculture and will not beconverted to other uses in the future.The owners retain the right to farm theland as they always have and can sellthe land at any time with the restric-tions of the conservation easement.

Donating an agricultural conserva-tion easement also has potential tax ad-vantages. Anyone interested indonating a conservation easementshould consult with a tax professional.

The PACE program has accepteddonations of 27 easements totaling 3,815acres. The program has purchased ease-ments on 88 farms totaling 20,926 acresfor nearly $17.9 million.

Shelby’s Saddlebredsget wide array of guests

Shelby County and its signatureAmerican Saddlebred industryget visitors from around the

world. Just a few weeks ago, CharlesKramer received a request for infor-mation from Australia. Two years ago,a family from New Zealand spent aweek in the bluegrass county.

“National and international travel-ers come to Kentucky because of thehorse industry,” said Kramer, theShelbyville-Shelby County tourism di-rector. “Because we’re marketed as theAmerican Saddlebred Capital of theWorld, that gets their attention.”

Kramer said tourism generates$43 million a year in economic activityin Shelby County, and most of it is re-lated to the horse industry. He said thecommunity began marketing its statusin the Saddlebred industry more ag-gressively a few years ago, and touristsincreasingly use the Internet to searchfor travel destinations.

“Our numbers [of tourists] werestill growing when the state’s numberswere flat,” Kramer said.

Kramer takes visitors on tours ofsome of Shelby County’s more than 40American Saddlebred farms. On a re-cent week he led eight coaches filledwith out-of-town guests on a horse farmtour. “Not a day goes by that we don’thave visitation because of theSaddlebred industry,” he said.

“We schedule our tours so they cancome into the arena and have the horseswork around them,” Kramer said. “It’sa pretty interactive tour.”

Shelby County’s horse industrytakes center stage during the ShelbyvilleHorse Show. This year’s event is sched-uled for Aug. 2-5. Some 400-500 horseswill compete for premiums and tro-phies worth more than $16,000, saidR.H. Bennett, the show manager.

Kramer estimated that theShelbyville Horse show attracts a four-day total of up to 28,000 people.

Bennett said 80 percent of the com-petitors in the horse show are local; therest come from all over the UnitedStates. He said most of the horsemenuse the show as a tune-up for theWorld’s Championship Horse Show inLouisville later in August and remain inthe area between shows.

Bennett and his brother, Edward,owner of historic Undulata Farm,started the Shelbyville Horse Show in1990.

“We wanted to marry theSaddlebred industry to the local com-munity,” R.H. Bennett said. “It was likea behind-the-scenes factory. TheShelbyville Horse Show gives us the op-portunity to exhibit what we build inour ‘factories.’”

“We have had more positive inputfrom our customers about KentuckyProud than anything we have done inthe last couple of years,” Rabe said.“Our customers enjoy the products, butthey also feel good about buying thingsfrom people in the state.”

The Kentucky Department of Agri-culture and its Kentucky Proud market-ing partner, Allied Food Marketers,brokered the deals between Remke andthe Kentucky Proud businesses.

The mobile command center waspurchased with a $67,000 grant fromthe Kentucky Office of Homeland Secu-rity for the communications equipmentand a $34,800 grant from the KentuckyDivision of Emergency Management forthe trailer, which will be stored ready toroll at the Boone National Guard Centerin Frankfort.

Hall came up with the idea of amobile command center during a visitto North Carolina. “Their people [in theNorth Carolina Department of Agricul-ture and Consumer Services] have ve-hicles they can operate out of in anemergency,” he said. Hall thought asimilar unit for the KDA would im-prove its emergency response capacityand benefit Kentucky’s citizens.

to a new mobile command center.The $101,800 mobile command cen-

ter is a 44-foot trailer outfitted with ra-dios and other equipment, allowing it tocommunicate with other state, federaland local authorities. The unit will bestaffed by KDA officials and towed to thescene of an agricultural emergency suchas a foreign animal disease outbreak.

The maximum award is $8,500 per region. Applicants must match thegrant with at least 50 percent cash. The grants are funded by a $249,000Rural Business Enterprise Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Kentucky Agritourism Advisory Council will award the grants.Applications will be judged on:

H.J. Baker and Bro. has announced that it is recalling products used asingredients in animal feed in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Ad-ministration.

The Westport, Conn.-based company has begun efforts to retrieve ProPak with Porcine Meat and Bone, Pro-Lak, and Pro-Amino II produced at itsAlbertville, Ala., facility. The action is being taken to address potential riskof unintentional contamination with ruminant-derived protein that mayhave occurred at the Alabama plant from August 2005 to June 2006. Certainmammalian protein is prohibited for use in ruminant feed.

The products were distributed in bulk or bags to feed manufacturersand dairy farms in Kentucky, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, Tennes-see, Mississippi, California and Louisiana.

Anyone who has received any of the recalled products is advised to dis-continue their use immediately, quarantine the product and contact themanufacturer at (501) 664-4870 for further instructions.

Kentucky Farm Bureau will host a series of eight Farm Bill Speak-Upmeetings around the state this summer to solicit input from Kentucky farm-ers on content and direction of new farm program legislation.

The series will seek testimony on extending or altering provisions gov-erning a variety of federal farm and conservation programs. Commentsgathered during the sessions will be compiled and condensed into policyrecommendations for eventual consideration by Farm Bureau’s annualmeeting voting delegates, according to KFB President Marshall Coyle.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture-sponsored Web site,www.sbrusa.net, will include rust information and commentaries from DonHershman, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture plant pathologist.Doug Johnson, UK entomologist, will provide information from Kentuckyon soybean aphids and Chad Lee, UK agronomist, will assist with agro-nomic information.

The Web site was used last year to track soybean rust in the UnitedStates. This year it is being expanded to track soybean aphids.

Information available on the site includes observations and manage-ment and scouting recommendations. It also provides tools for soybean pro-ducers to document their good farming practices.

Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has announced that nomina-tions for Farm Service Agency County Committee elections may be filed incounty FSA offices through Aug. 1.

Ballots will be mailed to eligible voters on Nov. 3. The last day to returnvoted and signed ballots to the county FSA office will be Dec. 4. Electedcommittee members and alternates will take office Jan. 1, 2007.

Chef Nancy Russman, a culinary arts teacher from Louisville, traveled to six Kentucky farmers’ markets last summer to demonstrate recipesfor grilling made with Kentucky Proud meats, fish, freshwater shrimp and poultry. Try some of these recipes at your next cookout!

Italian Ground Beef or Porkfrom Chef Nancy Russman

Ground beef or pork 1 poundGarlic, fresh minced 1 teaspoonSalt 1/4 teaspoonPepper, black ground 1/4 teaspoonItalian seasoning 3/4 teaspoonEggs, large 1 eachBread crumbs, fine 1/2 cup or

1 slice of bread made into crumbs

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Form into 8 balls or 4 patties.Cook on the grill or in an oven preheated to 375 degrees until cookedthrough. Serve the meatballs with your favorite tomato sauce or servethe burgers on your favorite buns with fresh sliced tomatoes.

Chicken pieces 8 pieces/1 chickenGarlic, fresh minced 2 clovesLemon juice 2 tablespoonsSoy sauce 2 tablespoonsVegetable oil 4 tablespoons or 3/4 cupHoney 1/3 cupWorcestershire sauce 1/3 cupGarlic, fresh minced 2 clovesSalt and pepper to taste

Mix in bowl, blender or food processor the minced garlic, lemon juice,soy sauce and vegetable oil and marinate chicken in mixture; coverand refrigerate up to 2 hours. Grill the chicken or cook in an oven at375 degrees until cooked through. Blend remaining ingredients in abowl, blender or food processor. Put cooked chicken on a platter andpour honey sauce over the pieces.

Ground beef 1/2 poundGround pork 1/2 pound*Salt 1/4 teaspoon*Pepper, black ground 1/4 teaspoon*Pepper, cayenne (optional) 1/4 teaspoon*Paprika 1/4 teaspoon*Italian seasoning 1/4 teaspoonGarlic powder 1/4 teaspoon

Tomato, sliced 1 ripe tomatoOnion, red sliced 4 thin slicesGreen bell pepper, sliced into rounds 4 slicesRice, white, cooked 2 cups

In a bowl, mix first eight ingredients (at left) and form into four pat-ties. Cook burgers on a grill or in an oven preheated to 375 degreesuntil done through. Place cooked burgers on top of rice and garnishwith slice tomato, onion and green bell pepper.
