MeMber feedback needed for the Mac Hey CanTeeners, The MAC is looking for some feedback on how CanTeen is rolling. Please take a moment to email us some answers so we can ensure CanTeen is working for you.

1) Are there any other services/supports that CanTeen can offer you?

2) Does CanTeen make a difference for you in your everyday life?

a) If yes, How? b) If no, what can be changed?

3) Our mission is to Support, Develop and Empower young people living with cancer. How can CanTeen complete the above mission statement better for you?

Email answers to: [email protected]

Andrew Crocker and the MAC

r.e.a.L Just checking in after REAL MAY 2010. For those of you who don’t have a clue what REAL is, here is the low down, REAL is a National Programme that stands for:

Rejuvenation EmpowermentAwareness Letting GoIt is a great weekend down in Christchurch with our fabulous facilitator David Garb. During the weekend you get to know members from around the country, share experiences and get REJUVENATED, EMPOWERED, gain AWARENESS and LET GO…..sounds good to you???!! If you want to find out more or to get yourself on a programme give me a bell or touch base at 0800 CANTEEN or [email protected]

So where was I….REAL May…it was great to see everyone get so involved, share so much of themselves and get so much out of the weekend. We were lucky enough to be sharing our venue with a police unit who were able to teach us a bit about what they get up to. Interesting stuff! Big up’s go out to Living Springs who always take such good care of us.

Cheers, Jarnia

teenLInkOn May 30th a group of members went to Living Springs with one objective in mind - to become the next group of Teen Linkers.

Teen Link is a fantastic opportunity for members as they have the opportunity to share their experiences with new members and support them through a process they have already experienced.

To become a Teen Linker, members have to complete a weekend workshop that is delivered by David Garb. Next is a placement process which includes 10-15 visits to members in their local communities (visits are monitored and guided by staff). Once placement is completed the group comes back to Living Springs for the final weekend workshop.

After prospective Teen Linkers complete both workshops, the placement process and passed all criteria they then graduate to become a Teen Linker.

Teen Linkers are required to update their skills every two years, and maintain their knowledge by undertaking Teen Link roles in their community.

Currently this group are undertaking the placement process. With the support of staff and National Office we hope all will complete this fantastic programme.

We wish all the up and coming Teen Linkers all the best and look forward to seeing you all at the next workshop in Christchurch.

Marathon for oUtWard boUnd

Shelley Hanna from Hawkes Bay decided to run a marathon and raised over $3,700 for one lucky recovered CanTeen patient member to go on Outward Bound. Shelley started running on 28 July 09 and all her running was focused on preparing herself for the New Plymouth marathon in March. Lots of training was needed to get her to the start line.

Shelley actually hates running – go figure?! But she wanted a challenge and a good cause to motivate her to keep training for the big marathon – the first she’d ever done. CanTeen is the lucky recipient of Shelley’s efforts. Shelley herself survived breast cancer 10 years ago and is impressed with what CanTeen does for its members and is very excited about giving a patient member the opportunity to challenge

themselves by going on an Outward Bound programme.

So now it’s your chance to put yourself forward for this awesome opportunity! There are certain medical and fitness criteria for entering which must be met prior to coming to course. If you want to be considered or for more info please contact your local MLC before August 2nd.

president’s report

chief executive’s report

CanTeen has been offered an opportunity for our members that will benefit them for years and years to come, and in most cases will support them gaining perspective and direction in their daily lives. Also please note that in the community sector this course costs each participant $1,800 and all places are filled in advance.

The name of this wonderful opportunity - JOLT CHALLENGEJOLT Challenge is a journey of Self Intelligence, bringing positive change in your life through developing a deeper self-awareness and providing tools for better self-management.

The programme explores the awareness of member’s thoughts, emotions, behaviors and capabilities and in turn provides members with the ability to better manage these areas.

Delivered over a 9 week programme this workshop is a great way to help our members design the life they want. They will be doing the programme with other members as one team and the nature of the programme provides the structure and support for them to make positive changes in their life that will last!

Whether it’s to improve the overall quality of life, gain clarity on the direction of their career, or invest in self development, then this is the programme for them.

It doesn’t matter where they are in life, they could be starting out on their professional career or looking to get back into the workforce or the education sector.

32 well deserving members have been chosen from Auckland and Wellington to participate in this wonderful opportunity, and the workshops will commence in September.

We will keep you all updated on the progress of this group so keep an eye out.

Hey all,In the last National Magazine, I challenged you all to get more involved in CanTeen and help make a difference, and now I am re-iterating that challenge.

As David has mentioned in his report, the coming year is going to be a challenge for us, so it is really important that each and every one of us get involved and help out where we can. You may have an idea for fundraising, want to make a speech to a sponsor, or even just have some free time to help sell bandannas or entertainment books it will all help! So get in touch with your local branch and see how you can help CanTeen!

In the next couple of months we will be taking nominations and filling some positions on the Member Advisory Committee! If you are interested in running for these positions, or just want to find out some more information about the MAC, email [email protected] or talk to one of the awesome MAC members from around the country.

You may have seen the Charter of Rights for Young People with Cancer on Facebook or in the media. This is a really important step towards improved treatment for young people with cancer, so please head to the website and sign up, and get all your family and friends to sign up too!

Many of you may have questions around CanTeen’s plans for the next year or so, so please feel free to contact me on 021 657 642 or 027 424 4647, or email me at [email protected] – I’m happy to answer any questions, any time!

Cheers, Hamish

I hope you are all managing to keep warm as we quickly descend into winter, cold times are ahead, especially for our colleagues and members in the deep south!

Office moveLots has been happening in the last few months, our CanTeen National Office has moved location – all the way up the stairs! We are now located on Level 2 at 111 Grafton Road in Auckland. We would love to show you around if you are ever in the area!

Recent Board meetingThe CanTeen Board met recently to discuss the budget for the next financial year. Unfortunately the finanical picture is not that rosy, we will end the financial year in deficit. We must focus on the future and how best to meet the challenges that lie ahead. The Board has reluctanly

been forced to endorse a number of cost reductions for the next financial year, these reductions will impact all areas of CanTeen, but especially National Office and specifically National Programmes with the postponement of National Camp and three other programmes.

While the extent of the cost cuts is significant it is important we also keep sight of what remains – we have 13 branches throughout New Zealand with dedicated and skilled staff, offering activities, resources and a commitment to “support, develop and empower young

people living with cancer”. That’s the heart of who we are.

Tough times, however challenging, can be moments of opportunity and growth.

Charter of Rights for Young People with CancerOn June 7th in London, the above charter was launched. This campaign involves cancer charities globally banding together to acknowledge the unique needs of young people with cancer and to ensure their needs are met.

To see our very own members in a video supporting the charter, find out more and pledge your support you can head to:

http://www.cancercharter.org/

Until next time,

David Pearce

“bIG UPS” froM canteen otaGoA huge thank you to DDR Dunedin for supplying a flat screen TV for one of our patient members, who was sick in hospital and couldn’t fly to Hamilton, so he could tune in and watch the V8’s!

Also thanks to Auto Art for removing old signage and applying new Pam’s signage on the Otago vehicle. It looks great!

oPSa head ShaveOtago Polytechnic Students Association (OPSA) produced a huge turnout to support Megan (OPSA President) and Michelle (OPSA Secretary) who were the main attractions in a flurry of head shaves. Seven people supported CanTeen by shaving their heads. Megan got her head shaved by Mike Waddell, Marketing and Businesses

Development Manager for OPSA who donated to have the privilege of shaving her head plus see her pledge to give up smoking! The amount of support for the students getting their heads shaved was awesome

to see and there are talks about this now becoming an annual event for CanTeen. To make things even more exciting the OPSA ran a mystery

auction and the total raised was around $2,000. The day was a huge success and a big thanks to OPSA especially Megan and Michelle.

President’s reportCanTeen Otago has had an awesome few weeks, with head shaves and activities.

We have been lucky enough to have two groups do head shaves for us. Big thanks to the Dunedin Hospital Muffin Break girls – Theresa and Millie and the OPSA for fundraising for CanTeen.

We have had our first R18 coffee day to focus on providing more support to our older members. Also we had a day trip to Gore, so members from Otago and Southland could catch up with each other and farewell Nadine, MLC for Southland. We have lots in the pipe line which is exciting to see and I feel we are progressing well. Our regular Tuesday night gatherings have been great as always and we thank our wonderful staff members.

Andrew Crocker

One night while I was at a regular CanTeen gathering and was asked by one of our staff members to have a look at a new game that was sent by National Marketing to find out about it. I suggested I would do this as well as write the report that you are reading now.

Meet Roxxi, a Nano-bot with attitude. She has been programmed for one thing: To help cancer patients fight the good fight.

Re: Mission is a third person shooter so you actually see Roxxi as you move her around. You are implanted into cancer patients to help fight off different types of cancer and bacterial infection with the help of your Holographic guide and mentor, Smitty. Smitty was an earlier model designed for the same purpose as Roxxi.

The purpose of the game is to help make patients and their siblings understand what each type of cancer is and what it can do, and how infections can cause fevers, etc.

Re: Mission is a fun, informative and full of quirky humour that will have you giggling all the way to the bank.

Shannon McKechie p.s kudos to you if you got the pun!

otaGo/SoUthLand JoInt actIVItY!On the 28th of March Southland and Otago had a joint activity. We went to Gore’s multi complex and went ice skating and swimming.

Ice skating was awesome, everybody was trying to show off how talented they were. Lunch was provided by CanTeen and it was divine!

After playing some games outside, we went swimming.

They had the obstacle course set up for us and the zorb which is where you walk across water inside a giant clear vinyl ball, but trust me it is WAY harder than you think. After an awesome day out, we all headed home with lots of good memories.

Southland President’s report

Hey, a big hello from the Deep South. We have all been pretty busy down here as of late. Nadine our X-MLC has now departed from Southland to tend the family farm in the Auckland region. We will all miss her loads as she filled a special space in all our hearts.

I’d also like to report back on Jump Start, as I had the most amazing weekend, and the jump was way exciting/scary! A few of us attended the TeenLink module in Christchurch where we learnt loads of new skills. Can’t wait till September for module two! Just had a joint activity in Gore with our comrades Otago, where we went ice-skating and swimming, all having a blast!

I’m sorry to announce my departure from CanTeen Southland, as I have a new job in Hamilton. I’ll miss you all dearly team!

I have built up a large network of contacts in and around Southland while working in these fields and in doing voluntary work (including travelling with overseas aid teams to India).

I recently married a wonderful man after being a divorced single parent for 19 years. We even share the same birthdays! I have three beautiful daughters and a wonderful son all aged between 24 and 30years.

My passion is to encourage people to never let an opportunity be wasted, and that no matter who we are or where we’ve been everybody has a personal story to tell.

I enjoy working alongside young people and I am looking forward to getting to know this great Southland CanTeen group.

Cheers.

canterbury/West coast President reportWassup Gangstaaa’s…I hope this Magazine finds everyone well and smiling!!

I’ve had a huge start to the year with a fantastic National Camp - big ups to the NCC. Then I went to Sydney for CanTeen Australia’s Leadership Workshop - this was absolutely amazing, We stayed in this HUGE old building with about 70 Australian CanTeeners for 6 days,

learnt heaps and made some awesome friends.

I went on JumpStart, which was the most breathtaking experience of my life. Thanks so much to the awesome team of Jump Masters and organisers of JumpStart along with the Canterbury/West Coast

Branch for nominating me to Jump!!

Staff wise, we have had some changes recently. We welcome Paul (our ‘New Jane’) our PSC while Jane is on “Holiday” popping out a baby. Also we are excited to start an interview process to find a ‘New Prudence’ our MLC while she joins Jane on “Holiday” … Yeah Riiight!!

We have also been busy getting the ball rolling for South Island Summer Camp which is happening in December 2010. We have the venue booked, the Committee is set up and all we need now are members and to get planning!!

Coming up we have R&R camp, a Willow Bank visit, Ten Pin Bowling- with our ‘Haley O’Neill’ Best Female Bowler and ‘Matt Truman’ Best Male Bowler Trophies and also a few fundraisers too!

Peace out homies,

RachPres - Canterbury/West Coast Branch

To say the least Art Workshop was a blast! We were welcomed by some wonderful and inspiring art teachers of St Cuthbert’s College. Those lovely ladies helped us turn our ideas into fabulous looking pictures. The ideas started flowing once we did a brainstorm together and our creative lights turned on. Click.

We all worked very hard those next few days to get our pieces finished. And thanks to those wonderful teachers they all looked amazing once they were finished.

On the last night we went ten-pin bowling and oh my goodness what a cool place it was!! We were in teams on each bowling alley and boy did we try hard to be the top.

Except some people had the gutters up!!!!!!! I’m not very good at bowling but I still had a fantastic night.

The whole workshop went quite quickly. Before we knew it we had to say our goodbyes and make our way back to the airport to head home again. It was a truly cool trip. Even though I was a bit tired and a bit sick of working on the same picture the past couple of days it was worth creating a possible Christmas card design for CanTeen.

Thanks to Jarnia and the Staff on Art Workshop, you guys were pretty coooool.

Jumpstart was such an amazing weekend!!

Seeing the back door open and watching all of

Auckland looking like tiny ants was incredible.

The freefall was the biggest rush of my life

and seeing the world from that high was truly

awesome. Thank you so much it was the most

amazing experience ever!

Catrina :)

Leap of faithFriday, April 30th about 15 of us went to

“Clip n Climb”. The big test for most of us was the “LEAP OF FAITH”. Even though we all had harnesses on, it still was quite daunting when you looked down and there is a big gap between you and the bar you are supposed to grab on to! We all did it in one degree or another but all agreed it was a real buzz for all concerned. Prue wanted to be up there but never mind, next

time Prue. After we had climbed every possible wall we called it a day, it was awesome night and everyone had a great time.

Hey fellow CanTeeners Paige here and it’s that time again where I share with you all the happenings of the Nelson/Marlborough gang.

Well when I last wrote to y’all we were getting close to our summer camp, so am pleased to report that it was off the hook lol. Nah it was awesome, if it wasn’t enough to have a group of amazing people we had a bunch of wicked activities as well. One of which I’m proud to say was provided by my amazing Nelson/Marlborough committee that’s right we stepped up to bring you CanTeens very own fear factor. It involved a blender, some chilli, milk, green peas, anchovies, cows tongue and four very brave lads to drink this nasty as cocktail.

And so stepped forth the brave ones - there was Haenga Albert, Sam Ferris, James Kelso, and Lachlan McDonald. Now only three out of four succeeded in this challenge and I’m not one to name names but what I will say is there was some spewing from one, a refusal from another and then there was the outstanding Haenga. This brave warrior after skulling his own cup of nastiness in virtually seconds stepped up to take a second cup from the reluctant player and again polishing it off like it was glass of water. We also enjoyed a wicked game of laser tag on camp and other fun activities.

Since summer camp we’ve had our monthly meetings and had an activity in Happy Valley where we went quad biking. Now unfortunately I could not attend, but I heard it was a blast and a little birdie told me that our vice pres Louise crashed her quad bike not knowing how to use the brakes lol. I’m pleased to inform you that she has not got her learners yet so we are all still safe on the roads up here in little old Nelson for a wee bit longer lol. Only joking Lu love you haha.

I thought I’d take this opportunity express my deepest sympathies to the family of Haenga Albert it’s a true tragedy what happened to this young lad and so unexpected that a young life of a non-cancer sufferer be taken from us here in CanTeen. I was deeply saddened to hear of his drowning as he made a lasting first impression on me during our first camp together (summer camp 2010). He was great fun to be around so I will say on behalf of CanTeen Nelson/Marlborough RIP Haenga Albert our thoughts are with you xo.

Well that’s all for now lots of love from Paige and the Nelson/Marlborough crew xoxo.

Summer campWe met at Bishopdale Mall car park and everyone was so excited to find out where we were going for our NSI MYSTERY Summer Camp!!!

So, we hopped into the vans and the tricky staff and volunteers made it feel like was gonna be a massive drive, but really we were only going to Blue Skies Camp in Kaiapoi (which is like, 10 minutes drive from Christchurch!). It was close to home but meant we got to do a lot of cool stuff!

We all had lots of fun at camp, played games and even went swimming with the Dolphins at Akaroa!!!! And while we were waiting for the last of the dolphin swimmers, we went to this place called “The Giant’s House” which was done by this artist who did her whole house and outside in mosaics...it was incredible!

To summarise, camp was fun and we all had good times

James Kelsonator

Louise howes rotoiti swimKia ora, my name is Louise Howes and I’m vice president of Nelson/Marlbrough CanTeen. On the 2nd of April I did something a little bit silly!! But before I share that here is a little about me. Ko Aoraki toku maunga, ko Arahua toku Awa, ko takitimu toku waka, ko Ngau Tahu toku iwi. I am now 15 years old and attend Waimea College in Richmond, Nelson.

On the 2nd of April 2010 I got up at 6am and drove down to Lake Rotoiti (one of the Nelson lakes). I got into a one piece pair of togs! Some of you may be thinking why would you want to be having a dip in a freezing cold lake with snow on the mountain next to the lake?!! This is were I tell you that I am a competitive swimmer and have been around the pool side since I was 18 months old as my mum is a coach!

So anyway… I’m standing at the edge of this lake in togs and have 2 boats and a kayak waiting for me.

Lake Rotoiti is 8km long and on the 2nd of April it was 14 degrees!! So what do I do?? I get in and start swimming.

Call me crazy but I got in that spine chilling 14 degree water and I swam and swam and swam. I swam to the other end of the lake it took 2hours and 46 minutes and then I decided to swim back…8km there and then 8km back!! All up I swam for 5hours 59 minutes and swam a total of 16km!! That’s non-stop 640 lengths of a 25m pool!!

So what I challenge all of you CanTeeners out there is to live life, follow your dreams and what ever you choose to do in life, own it!

Luv yu all

From Louise Howes xx

Lauree MLcHey there, we’ve had some cool stuff lately with the Women’s Surf Tour coming to da Naki. We met Steph Gilmour & some other really talented international surfers including our own awesome Paige Hareb!

We had a one off to encourage some members to come and play with us by taking them up to Auckland for a wicked day that did not include treatment of any kind. Thanks Air NZ for helping us get there, Auckland Zoo for the amazing behind

the scenes tour, Kelly Tarltons for the underwater experience & Sky Tower for the scary trip to the top of the world.

Hayden, Fenella, Casey & Josh had such a cool time getting around in the limo van. All round a great day. We hope they’ll all be getting more involved in Taranaki now too which we’d love.

The awesome Committee organised a Mystery Day which I’m sure you’ll hear about further. Thanks also to Hamish for coming up for that.

We’re also loving the local support from Bishops Action Foundation & Dereks Darkroom for our Mac computer. We’re busy publishing some cool DVD’s, newsletters & more.

We’re working towards next years committee now too which is interesting. If you’re keen to know more about what we’re up to, come along to a meeting, have a feed and a listen.

Meanwhile – stay warm & enjoy the piccys.

central

central division Summer camp 2010On Friday the 26th of February, CanTeen Central travelled to Whanganui for their annual summer camp. The theme for this was ‘animals’ and it was great fun dressing up as our chosen animal. Over the weekend we participated in many activities which included the Fying Kiwi, kayaking, high ropes, flying fox and the waterslide. Taranaki undertook a remembrance to reflect on and remember young people that have travelled the cancer journey and sadly those who had lost their battle. The camp was enjoyed by all, with older members catching up with friends from other areas and new members forming new friendships. So as Sunday dawned and we cleaned and packed up, it was sadly time to say goodbye to all until next time.

Kirsten Jones

taranaki Mystery dayOn the 17th of April, 12 Taranaki Members (and National President Hamish O’Connor) showed up unknowing of what activity we would be doing. After driving around the corner we showed up at Chatty’s Charters, which few people expected. After 12 mouthfuls of sea water we saw the seals which was amazing even though on the way back a few of us couldn’t quite handle the rocky seas!! After an hour of footy on the beach and sammies, we got lost trying to find the paintballing place. When we finally found it we pulled on the overalls (some choosing bright red). We ran around for a few hours getting shot, and surprisingly afterwards we were all fairly happy. So all round I think mystery day was a hit.

Heather O’Neill

Leaders’ weekend from March 19th-20th was a great time and a new experience for me. First I flew off from New Plymouth down to Wellington which was great as I love to fly. I was met by Penny who took me to our fancy hotel, we stayed on the 8th floor which was one floor above the ground as the hotel was on a hill.

After settling in to the hotel, we headed down to an all you can eat Mongolian BBQ where we met up with a few more of our CanTeen buddies. We sang Happy Birthday to each upon their arrival, just to embarrass them.

After a satisfying meal we strolled back to the hotel where we had a nice dip in the pool and then called it a day. In the morning we got into our fancy dress clothes. I was a Wizard, we also had an air host man, a prisoner, Winnie the Pooh, the Easter Bunny and people from various times with weird hair styles.

We all met up at the CanTeen house and then went to a cafe and had a nice breakfast. After breakfast we got down to work back at the CanTeen house. It wasn’t really work as it was good to hear all about the other branches, about how and what they were doing, what

they wished to do and what could happen in the future.

Before I knew it, it was the afternoon and time to fly back home to New Plymouth. Overall it was a great trip, it was good to know that us CanTeener’s really do call the shots, it was heaps of fun and a good learning experience so if you ever get a chance like this take it - it is just awesome.

helen’s commentsThe weeks go by fast as there is always so much going on at CanTeen. Two Manawatu members and I flew down to Christchurch and met up with other members from different branches and I had an excellent weekend as the members were all training to be TeenLinkers. This involves quite a lot of work for our TeenLinkers and it was great to see such commitment from members wanting to help and support other young people living with cancer.

We are hoping to make the first Thursday in the month early evening activity for patient support/TeenLinker organised activities so keep an eye out.

Bye for now, Helen

Manawatu is humming! We’ve had members on each national programme this year. Well done new TeenLinkers!

We had a wonderful evening of food and learning with our volunteers at Stagedoor Café, thanks to the committee members who put so much effort into the evening.

To coincide with Hug a GINGA Day, we held a fundraiser, going GINGA 4 CanTeen where Palmy people turned red on top - some briefly, some more permanent. Thanks to those involved and DownTown and HairWorks.

Keep up the good work.

Chris - MLC

manawatuteenlinkTeenLink was a new experience. Teenlink allows CanTeen members to go into hospitals or new members/patients homes and talk to them about CanTeen. I am looking forward to meeting new

bevys blog:Howdy dudees! Hope everything’s splediforish with yooouuus!

I have been a busy beaver lately! The two awesome Gingas (Anna and Caitlin) and I travelled to Wellington recently to attend the Central Leaders weekend. It was a wicked weekend involving lots of talking to randoms and scaring them with our funky as outfits, yummy food, all you can eat Mongolian BBQ, a really cold pool, blueberry pancakes and of course lots and lots of making our branch, and Central awesome!!!!!

If you guys ever have any problems or ideas as to how to make Manawatu even more darn diddly cooler then chuck us a line! (talk to us about it). I dunno about u doodles but I’m so super uber excited for RNR camp! I hope I will see all y’all pretty faces there with bells on or flippers on as the case may be...it’s gonna be off the hook with funness!! We are gonna be making CanTeen history at RNR camp but I dont wanna give too much away cause that’ll ruin the surprise :)

Anyway I’m pretty much gonna fall asleep...did you know that dolphins sleep with one eye open! lolphin! Peace out... love you long time! Life’s a wave...RIDE IT!

xxBevy JRxxI had a very fantastic day. We started off with shooting which I just came 2nd in and then after lunch at BK we went sailing on the Whanganui River. The whole day was put on by the Cummings and the Sea Cadets. It was an awesome time had by all, getting to experience something that we wouldn’t have otherwise. Thank you to everyone who made the day possible, especially the Cummings and Sea Cadets. - Anna

rnr campRNR camp this year was so much fun!!! The theme was high school stereotypes. We started with get to know you games and creating warm and fuzzy boxes where you put notes to other people which make them feel all warm and fuzzy.

On Saturday we did Manawatu’s awesome activity of tie-dyeing! Everyone’s shirts looked amazingly colourful! The rest of the day was filled with Zumba, clay making, finger painting and school games. Saturday night we let loose and had a fashion parade of all the high

schoolers-jocks, nerds, class clowns you name it!

To cap off the night we had air bands which were soooo much fun! And the best part was when everyone danced together to “We’re all in this together”! It really captured the essence of camp-support, develop and empower! We

made CanTeen history by having chat groups for the first time ever at a division level which was fantastic!

Sunday morning was Wellington’s activity of Harry Potterness! Overall the camp was so much fun and really what CanTeen is all about! Thanks so much to the awesome staff, volunteers and members that made the camp what it was.

Southland’s Superstar SerraWe have the best volunteer in Southland – SERRA!!!! – Serra StewartShe has been a volunteer for CanTeen Southland for at least seven years and not only does she come along and help on camps, she comes to our weekly gatherings as well. If we have a special occasion she bakes the most amazing chocolate cakes covered in chocolate, marshmallows and berries!

Our Christmas parties are often held at her family farm and Serra will prepare the food that always includes a ham, crushed roast potatoes, yummy salads, and her famous chocolate cake.

Thanks for all of your support Serra, love Maureen and the CanTeen Southland crew.

northland Star Volunteer –

tony GillOur star volunteer is Tony. His is the father of two of our Northland Members and is an all-round Mr Fixit. Tony can fundraise with the best of them and has sizzled many a sausage during Bandanna Challenges but has really helped out lately. Due to a death in the family, Leeann was unable to attend Summer Camp and Tony stepped in overnight to ensure the Northland Crew could still go. He also organised four sleepy Members into a car at 5am and drove them to the Maraetai Fishing Competition. Without his help our attendance at both events would not have been possible so a big thank you to Tony from CanTeen

Northland.

Manawatu Star canteener - caitlin kilpin Caitlin is a star member at the Manawatu branch assuming many roles. Caitlin has great potential and is keeping up the Ginga tradition, thanks for your all of help Chris and Helen xo.

boP Star canteener - reece PattersonReece has just taken on looking after our Facebook page for the Division. Reece set this up and monitors it for us! He also gave up 8 hours of his time at our last fundraiser - Fight For Life. Reece is also our local IT Support man with Rachel and I having NO IDEA! Thanks for all your help Reece and keep up the great work.

auckland Star canteener - Sakiusa Vacokowale

Saki has been the CanTeen member mantis in Auckland lately. He has helped out so much over the last couple of months from getting up on the spot to talk about CanTeen in front of people, meeting new members and helping them to feel welcome, doing odd jobs around the office, stepping up to join the committee and living life by getting involved with all CanTeen has to offer. You’re da man Saki, Cheers Steve, Nags and Brian

Welcome new nelson/ Marlborough Volunteer!

Kia ora, Joelene wanted to take my photo arghhh, not a fan but got in there for CanTeen!! I started with CanTeen a few months ago and my first meeting with the members was Quad biking at Happy Valley. I did think twice about being a volunteer when Louise tried to throw me off the bike into the river, but all good I stayed dry.

I’m the oldest of 6 (yep bossy). My work experience has been in many, many areas, from picking grapes, cooking in France to driving tour buses around NZ. I’ve also worked as a volunteer, helping the survival of the giant turtles in Greece, working with young children in small villages in Peru and doing a few dishes to help out The House for Street Children in Mexico. I like to make the most out of life and get in lots of laughs with others along the way.

Cheers Philippa

national Support from SabrinaSabrina Li, an MBA student at Auckland Institute of Studies, has been helping at CanTeen National office every Tuesday since February. Sabrina regularly provides volunteer services to the Finance and Marketing and Fundraising teams.

Sabrina has undertaken different roles at CanTeen which have been an immense help. She has been assisting with things like administration, entering donor details into our MMERF database, accounts activities and many other ad-hoc tasks.

Sabrina says she loves helping at CanTeen because all the staff and members are very nice and friendly and she appreciates the opportunity to get some experience before she graduates.

Thank you for all your hard work Sabrina!!

thank you hawkes bay VolunteersThis a few words to say a big thank you to our wonderful Hawkes Bay volunteers. We have: Karen who has been with us for near on four years - she was my first volunteer and it was just her and I for a very long time – thanks for your stick-ability we love having you around!

Todd who found us after a financially unsuccessful pool fundraiser (he was at the pools and saw us and joined up) – he was asked at the volunteer interview by a member what he could bench press and where he bought his shoes – none of this put him off CanTeen

His co-worker Trev (who has probably coped the most flack of all the volunteers – but sometimes bridges need to built) – should I mention anything here about coffee and grants for bridge building materials?!

Rachael – a wonderful volunteer who we don’t see at monthly activities or camps but does lots of fundraising for us – go Rach!

Bev – who signed up from the website and has expanded her life experiences by joining us and does all that we ask of her without fuss.

Mike – an ex-CanTeener that many of you will know, who needs to consistently give the Co-ordinator and others a hard time.

And just on the weekend when I was at a social (non-CanTeen) do, another person asked if we needed more volunteers!

Personally, and I am sure from the CanTeen HB crew, we love you guys and really appreciate you giving up your time to get wet, muddy, dressed up, poked in the ear, given a bit of a hard time etc. We couldn’t and wouldn’t have as much fun without you!

Thanks Anita

r.e.a.LI didn’t realise I wasn’t the only one heading down to Christchurch until I met Charlie at the airport. Out of 13 possible rows of seats on the plane, I sat in the 13th row. The big Christchurch airport was a little disorientating until we were greeted by Michelle and Murray.

Once everyone had arrived we made our way to the two shuttles that took us to Living Springs…our ‘home’ for the next two days with beautiful views of the small harbour and out to sea. We explored the grounds a little, before David Garb arrived (and dinner) to kick off the weekend.

After dinner we were told to sit down and share with the rest of the group what our name was, where we were from, what our energy levels were like (out of 10) and what our trip to Christchurch was like. We then did a little

activity where we had to find someone who we didn’t know, and buddy up. One of us had to stand in front of the other with our back to them and close our eyes while our buddy put their hands on our shoulders. We were to be cars. Our buddy had to guide us from behind around the room and not bump us into anything! Working up the gears and braking for traffic lights was interesting.

The next exercise was to stand facing each other and the person who closed their eyes, held their index finger pointing down at about chest height. Our buddy then put their hand underneath our finger and guided us around the room walking backwards while we had our eyes closed!

The next day brought along the actual REAL workshop where we did a bit of talking about our experiences with cancer and a couple of activities

where we got to write about them. David also did an amazing relaxing activity which made a lot of us feel completely washed out! It was amazing!

The night brought around a ‘talent quest’ which turned out to be watching the movie Paranormal Activity with a truck load of popcorn! Sunday rolled around all too quickly as far as we were all concerned! We had to have our bags packed and ready to go, just after breakfast which was at 7am as we needed to finish off the rest of the REAL workshop before we left at around 10am. We completed another trust and sharing activity before we headed back to the airport to say our goodbyes to everyone before they flew off home.

It was an awesome weekend and I look forward to doing another one in the future!

hb’s view of central division Summer camp 2010The facts:1) Friday 26th to Sunday 28th Feb.

2) People on HB bus – Big Al (driver), Anita, Trev, Bev, Josh, Alesha, Ashley (me), Huds x 2 (Abi and Pip), Hadlands x 2 (Kea and Andrew), Kurt, Mariah, Isla, Ani. Wow – 7 “A”s!!

3) Pip’s very first CanTeen activity. Well done Pip!

4) Trev can hold a drink bottle for a very long time.

5) Trev can NOT figure out how to build a bridge.

6) Kurt’s home baking = awesome.

7) Kurt lost Anita’s whacking stick – a stick filled with glitter that was not ever used for whacking but became a very popular stick to have – even traded for home baking (see number 6).

8) Due to number 7, everything is Kurt’s fault in future (even Trev’s coffee complaints).

9) Human sundaes on Friday!

10) Anita loves kayaks.

11) Anita loves getting tipped out of kayaks.

12) CanTeen HB is working very hard behind the scenes to lure Timmy away from Taranaki.

13) Guest appearances at camp included a ginga frog, Tiger Woods, Old McDonald, Li’l McDonald, a try scoring magpie, the Cadbury gorilla, a pirate with his parrot, a duck and waaay too many cats.

14) Activities were awesomely fun – high ropes, kayaks, flying kiwi and archery.

15) Nic (from Welly) plays guitar AND harmonica. Legend!

16) Camp made people feel all warm and fuzzy.

Big ups to Anita for organising the camp so superbly. I encourage every single one of you to come to the next camp – now THAT would be cool!!

God bless

AshleyP.S. Thanks heaps to Hastings District Masonic Trust Inc for granting us the money for this camp.

President reportHey all CanTeeners! Well, it surely has been happening here in the Hawkes Bay lately! Sadly we are losing Alesha to the naki…(*boooo’s* from the audience*) but oh well, I’m sure she will make an impact on the Taranaki bunch as much as she has on us here in the Hawkes Bay Branch! Silly CROSS-CON-TIM-INATION. The elections for the new committee are coming soon and it will be exciting to see who the new committee is made up of!

Well, it was just a quick word from me and that shall do!

Just remember, “Stay Silly” (:

See You

Josh.....Thank you Shelley!!!We would like to take this chance to thank Shelley Hanna from Hawkes Bay for her awesome efforts to raise money for CanTeen. Despite hating running Shelley came up with the idea to run a marathon and raised over $3,700 for one lucky recovered CanTeen patient member to go on Outward Bound. Check out page one for more detail.

Thanks Shelley, you’re awesome.

For our local Wellington March monthly activity we decided to show our creative skills or just put our best artistic skills on a plate, bowl, mug etc…

Now once we had found the place (it had moved up the road from its original location), we had a bit of a talk from the lady in charge and all chose our pottery piece to paint.

This was one of our best turn-outs for a monthly activity with around 20 members who came along. There were many pieces of fine

art-work produced and we then left them at the shop to be put in the kiln (the hot fire thing).

After the activity we headed down to the pier at Petone to have a little remembrance for an awesome CanTeen Wgtn member, Josh Stewart who passed away on the 12th March.

And then we finished it all off with a little birthday celebration with a thunderbirds cake for Vinh Vu (awesome job PAK’SAVE Petone!!)

Masterton activityIt was pouring rain and a few members from CanTeen Wellington were on their way to the Solway Hotel in Masterton to do either high ropes or driving range. When we got there, the weather hadn’t improved but a few brave members were willing to do the high ropes in the rain!!

Others stayed dry and practiced their golf swing at the driving range. Lucky for us, the weather cleared up and more members went to do the high ropes. A couple of us girls conquered our fear of heights, well done Toni and Kristy :)

We then had some afternoon tea and then drove all the way back to the office in Wellington. It was an awesome day :)

Paint-ballThe bruise marks are still there on my body. Fortunately my modeling days are over after turning 22 not so long ago, nonetheless they are a reminder of what was a painful but satisfying day in the Paint Ball fields. In fairness, I brought it upon myself being rather conservative with the trigger and hiding in the trenches for most of the duration of the initial rounds. It was only because I was completely out of my element. Being part of the pretentious Wellington urban youth scenes, the amount of running and greenery was over-whelming to the senses that have been acclimatised to the coffee-sipping, obscure music listening, metropolis way of life.

As a CanTeen member however, I felt the need to get out of my comfort zone and the final ‘all on all’ round was my time to shine - and shine I did!! My precision shooting and strategic manoeuvres, that can only be attributed to the hours I’ve spent online playing Call of Duty (Level 70, just sayin ya know) left me last man standing with ample ammunition. There are rumours floating around of an unsanctioned one-on-one match involving that well built chap, going by the name of Shannon. However the result is yet to be decided, and will be made at the next war crimes tribunal.

chop and change fundraiser in WellingtonOn the 20th of March 2010 an amazing event took place. Wonderfully organised by Daphne Seyb who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It was a full house on the night with over 200+ attendance! The show featured very talented dance crews, and in between the hosts would keep the audience entertained with plenty of laughs. Daphne was among the performers, along with Nic from CanTeen who performed an acoustic guitar and harmonica duo. At the end of the night Daphne had a Chop and Change (Head Shave) along with quite a few willing audience members showing their support towards a great cause. A very successful night for everyone involved. A very special thanks for all performers and Daphne for putting on such an amazing event to help raise money for CanTeen Wgtn!

rest & relaxation Weekend 7-9th May 2010Tauranga Intermediate provided this amazing venue Ngamuwahine, a camp in the Kaimais, to us for free! That’s right free! It was down 3kms of metal road and exclamations of “I feel like we’re going bush” could be heard along with “Have you still got signal? I do!” The food was fantastic and fit for a king this included: cooked breakfasts, Subway, hangi and chicken burgers.

Saturday was filled with action packed activities as we piled into our vans and headed to Papamoa for Trick Cycling, Laser Clay Bird Shooting and Laser Tag. Steering a bike without handle bars was most unusual and not that easy. This was evident by the many people who tipped them over. Clay bird shooting without real ammunition, the huge bang and kick back was a little strange although it didn’t seem to make a difference. I still couldn’t hit one. We had a remembrance ceremony that evening. It was my first one and was a very moving experience.

Sunday’s highlight was definitely all the pampering which included hair, makeup and massages. For the real adventurous people a high ropes course was also on offer. All in all in, Rest & Relax was a huge amount of fun and a thoroughly enjoyed camp by all.

Danielle Russell

Remembrance was very touching, with a few members sharing their stories and supporting each other.

I had the best massage for 10 minutes, did a face mask with McKay and then he decided to do my makeup which made me look like a porcelain doll, and my hair with a unicorn horn and the rest teased. Was a heap of fun! Danni who raised $5,000 for the camp by shaving her head also came and was playing the guitar etc.

We then went into the bush for a walk and then came back and cunningly all got shaving foam in both our hands. We then lured Ankia outside and all of us ran and bombarded her!!! Then quite a few people turned on

me and I had shaving foam in my ears and all over my face, also all through my hair adding to the knots from teasing and the massive amount of wax in my hair. It was a wonderful camp!!!

Zoe Mayhew

I had a great first camp for CanTeen. It was an awesome experience and if you’re scared that you will have no friends there, you’ll make some, no doubt about it, I did. To all those people who think I am a hobo (Ankia). I am not a hobo, I have a hobo.

bay flight experienceOn the 17th of April a lucky few of us CanTeeners were given the opportunity to catch some wicked views over Tauranga, with a few training commercial pilots from BayFlight. The planes were tiny and I have to admit that I was a little nervous watching the first two planes fly off with 5 smiling and waving CanTeeners inside them.

But by the time it was our turn, Rachel, new member Sarah and myself were all raring to go, chatting away as we buckled in for the flight. But as the flight took off, although the views of Matakana, The Mount, Papamoa and Tauranga were amazing you could definitely notice the lapse in noise as we became just a little motion sick. Although we did get a little bit nauseous it was a wicked experience for all of us and as always it was great to catch up with new friends and fellow CanTeeners.

Thank you so much to the two pilots Danica Walsh and Janelle Rouse that allowed us to get CanTeen up in the air we had so much fun.

head shaveOn Thursday 29th April Hayley, Paula, Rachel and Zoe went to Katikati to support Danni Roberts big day. Danni is a 15 year-old from Katikati College who shaved her head for us and combined with Dean the Head Boy at her school who also had his legs waxed. I think he suffered the most pain!

It was a great turn out and many students were there to support Danni. Special thanks goes out to Eves Realty who raised $270 from open home donations for the event and Robert Harris was donating $1 per every cup of coffee sold. Katikati College raised $855 and other major sponsors included Steve Amrein Earthmoving, A1 Excavators Limited and Paula Vigus.

Huge thanks goes out to all the friends and family that helped out and donated to this event on behalf of CanTeen BOP. Together they raised approx. $5000 which went towards our Rest & Relaxation Camp. It is an amazing thing she did for us, and is much appreciated. Thank you Danni.

waikato/bop/east capeamazin’ MazeWho would’ve known that a field of corn (maize to be precise), could be fun? A bunch of us Waikato Peepz and a few BOP Peepz headed over to “THE AMAZING MAIZE n MAIZE” just outside of…..Whakatane ….okay the middle of nowhere. First up rules and regulations, and after a quick chinwag, we were split into teams….Boys vs Girls….the ultimate in team rivalry.

It was a race to the exit (well it wasn’t supposed to be but we made it like that). And after many dead ends, wrong turns and BIG walking around in circlesness we boys finally made it out, only to find the girls were out first…DOH!!!! After much discussion on who actually won, everyone sat down to lunch, then a highly enthusiastic, eventful game of volleyball and cricket followed.

Thanks to all the Staff and Volunteers for your contribution, and to the awesome Peepz at “The Maize”.

See you next time

east capersOnce again, another cracker of a month in CanTeen East Cape! We started the month with Kai at Noodle CanTeen (Yuuuum!) followed by a trip to the movies to see the classic East Coast crack up - “Boy”- A real treat after a pretty intense Committee meeting!

The following Wednesday Toni from Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti kindly put on a free Aqua fitness class for us at the Olympic pools. We then hit up BK Gisborne with Bex, Raymond and Shekinah for a well deserved burger or two. Aqua fitness was a really awesome and productive activity for our branch, and we’re hoping to have more fitness focused activities in the future!

CanTeen East Cape members have been absolute stars, and I feel so privileged to be involved with such an awesome group of people. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us!

fight for Life – 2010Once again the amazing team at the Waikaeria Prison put together their 3rd biannual boxing charity fundraiser with all proceeds going to CanTeen Waikato. The committee and staff at the Department of Corrections gave up their time and annual leave to make this evening a success. The night consisted of 12 exciting bouts, head-shaves an auction and brilliant entertainment throughout. What an awesome experience to be part of.

Aodhan Hamilton once again blew away the crowd of over 1000 with his inspiring speech and really brought home why each of these people were in the room to support CanTeen. Thank you also to the CanTeen members and volunteers who assisted in the running of this event.

Swimming with the dolphinsOn the 13th of March, BOP and Waikato joined forces and ventured out into the big, blue ocean in search of dolphins. On our adventures we had great company, including the amazing skipper, who had many great stories to share, and his awesome crew who helped us with everything we needed. We had great food from Subway (which some CanTeeners may know how much I enjoyed!), and a great atmosphere.

It was also great to see some new CanTeeners join us. Even though we didn’t find the dolphins (and half of us got completely saturated!) we all still had a fabulous day on the water. I would like to thank the skipper and his crew for donating the whole trip to us and for making the day so enjoyable. You are amazing!

18+ activity on Lake taraweraMarch 14th we had our first 18 plus activity, and we went down to Lake Tarawera in Rotorua and spent the day biscuiting, waterskiing and relaxing by the lake. It was a beautiful day and oh so much fun. I caught two little fish whom I named and kept for a little bit to entertain everyone before I let them go again. Rachel was not as un-coordinated as I was hoping however was still a laugh watching her get up on skis. Thank you to Bruce Narbey who gave up his time and boat for us – what an awesome day!

Introducing brianHaving spent 29 years living in Europe as a professional athlete and national coach I am very pleased to now be, in my fifth year under the long white clouds, back in fabulous Aotearoa.

Hailing from Cambridge, yep… go the Chiefs, I now live at Hatfields Beach, Orewa with my wife Jacqueline and son Joey.

I’ve spent many years supporting young people achieve their goals in the professional sporting arena and my three year stint running YMCA Auckland’s youth development program “Raise Up ‘n Represent’’ set me in good stead to take on what I consider to be the most fulfilling role of my career to date - Member Support Manager at CanTeen Auckland.

No doubt we will bump into each other at a CanTeen event.

Brian Barnett

hook, line and sinker - Maraitai fishing competition 2010At 8am all the CanTeen members were assembled on the Wharf at Maraitai fishing dock to set off for a full day of fishing and surprises. We were all given goodie bags/buckets and then had the opportunity to go aboard the Police boat, which was enormous!

Then the moment we were waiting for. Go fishing!!! Now, people that go out fishing have a belief that its bad luck to have bananas on board while fishing. In my case, I needed the bananas! Most boats were banana’d and they caught numbers of fish! I’m a testament to that. It wasn’t til 2 hours of catching nothing that the police boat came by and threw a banana at our boat that we caught fish. YAY! Eventually we headed back and got into a bus to Maraitai beach. This was the highlight of the day. We got to meet and chat with Ali Williams and Graham Henry!!

Finally, the prize giving. There are no words to describe how unselfish and amazing people can be. CanTeen members were kindly donated a pool table, bedroom set, couch, HP laptops, portable DVD players, Helicopter rides and heaps more! There were tears of joy from everyone that attended the event. Many thanks to the skippers for giving up their time and the organisers who gave me back belief that there are angels on this earth looking over us.

Summer camp 2010 - March 12th-14th Nine Northland members and a volunteer headed up to the beautiful Bay of Islands for our annual Summer Camp. Auckland members, volunteers and staff joined us for a weekend of fun. We started Friday off with a session at Actionworld where we played mini golf, threw ourselves down the water slide and attempted the trapeze and high wire exercises. Saturday saw us out on the water kayaking up to Haruru Falls. Sunday we returned to Whangarei stopping off at Zion Wildlife Gardens to see the tigers, lions, cheetahs and leopard. A full on but fun weekend.

from the kristin School cat WalkThe Auckland Team would like to thank everyone involved with the Kristin School Fashion Show from the cast and crew to the models, technicians, teachers and senior students who are helping to raise awareness and funds to support CanTeen Auckland. Also we would like to thank all the contributors who help make this show possible.

It is amazing to sit and watch the students dance and model these outfits and I believe it gets better each year. The students wear designs from Trelise Cooper, Adrienne Winkelmann, Yvonne Bennetti, Paris Texas, Barkers, North Beach, Storm, Crowded Elevator and Federation. They even create wearable arts and this year two of their students had each designed and made a range of clothing “Something Else “By Katie Dromgool and “This is It“ by Jess Quinn.

Once again thank you so much for your continued support, we are looking forward to the show in 2011.

relax was awesome, Wow guy!!Relax camp was mean as, we stayed at this cool five star hotel. I liked going on the Duck Boat and going up on the gondolas. The geysers were awesome and we saw two Kiwi. The feeds were excellent. I hope to go on the next camp, most definitely wow guy!!!

reLaX in rotoruaWhile Las Vegas stretched the budget, RotoVegas was

a brilliant alternative. The weekends host to 24 young CanTeeners was the Regal Palms Resort. The Resort’s hospitality was absolutely five star +++. Ross you’re brilliant!

Friday night and Luigi’s Pizzeria was brilliant a must for anybody visiting Rotorua. Saturday morning and fully fuelled, members kicked off with the amphibious Duck tour. Afternoon Martial Arts, followed by relaxing Tai Chi, had members “well hungry” for the evening dinner on top of Mt Ngongotaha. The gondola’s travelling skyward afforded awesome views.

On Sunday morning we visited Te Puia which is a cultural gem. Te Puia staff were overwhelming with their hospitality. Big kisses to Mildred our brilliant tour guide. A beautiful weekend deserved a beautiful ending and Okere Falls Café offered this indeed. In the idyllic Rotorua lakes, great organic lunch food made the very sad goodbyes much easier.

A great weekend had been had by all. Until next time when we meet for more fun, bigger support of each other and enjoyment…Brian.

clay bird Shooting – March 22nd

Seven members ventured out to Read’s Retreat at Hikurangi for some shotgun lessons followed by a round of clay bird shooting into the evening. The clays were set up to imitate real live animal movements so we attempted to shoot clays representing both

rabbits and ducks. Ben Iggo stood out from the start and hardly missed a clay all night. Others took a little longer to hit their mark and Leeann almost managed to shoot one smallish building! By the end of the evening we had all managed to blow small clay targets to smithereens and had a lot of fun.

fishing competition – Maraetai – aprilFour members plus a volunteer made the annual trip south to Maraetai to join in with the CanTeen Fishing Competition 2010. Lots of snapper were caught and everyone had a great day out on the water. The after match prize giving was well attended with celebrity figures such as Graham Henry and Ali Williams on hand. Lots of prizes made the long trip back home after a fantastic day out. Well worth getting up at 4am for!

Poor knights Islands trip – april 2010Nine members headed out for a day trip with Dive Tutukaka to the Poor Knights Islands. These Islands are off the coast of Northland – a 50 minute launch trip from Tutukaka. They are rated as one of the world’s top ten dive spots and are a marine reserve showcasing many rare land and aquatic species. We spent the day snorkelling, kayaking and sightseeing, exploring many caves along the way – including the world’s biggest sea cave. Truly a fantastic day out and for many of us our very first trip to the Islands. Many thanks to Dive Tutukaka for showing us such a great time and the Whangarei District Council who funded this (and all our monthly activities for the year) from their Community Fund.

remembrances

Vahoi Lupeiki In the loving memory of Vahoi Louisa Lupeiki who passed away on Saturday the 22nd of May 2010, 24 years of age. She battled for 7 months and fought right until the end. Vahoi was a courageous warrior who showed the true meaning of strength and perseverance. Rest in peace Vahoi, fly with the angels until we meet again.

From Kevin Lupeiki (Vahoi’s Brother)

In loving memory of Vahoi Lupeiki: She makes you laugh, she makes you smile, get on her bad side and she’ll go wild, she loved to shop and have fun with all the people at CanTeen. She loved her friends, she loved her family. She is number 1 and is resting in peace with the lord. We love you Vahoi, you will always be in our thoughts and hearts.

From Omeka Tamihana Thompson (CanTeen friend)

Matt Warner (21/9/1990 – 15/4/2010) Matt was a member for a short time in the Naki. Matt had a positive outlook on what he was going through which greatly helped his twin sister and family. Our thoughts are with Matt and his family.

Joshua Stewart (28/10/1990 – 12/3/2010)Josh sadly left us earlier this year, after a courageous second battle with cancer. Josh left behind to CanTeen Wellington some lovely artwork that hangs in the CanTeen hang out room at Wellington hospital. It contains the quote “Life is like a play station game, full of missions not always accomplished at first but with perseverance you can conquer anything and with the right attitude nothing is impossible.” Josh is onto his next game and I’m sure he is playing it just as hard as he did the last one.

haenga albert Puhi Puhi (21/9/1994 – 23/2/2010)Haenga we miss you! Our Branch just isn’t the same without your wicked sense of humour, your amazing hair-straightening ability, your smooth moves, your grace on the ski field and the sparkle you carried with you all the time. The time we spent with you at Summer Camp will never be forgotten and wherever you are….we send you our tightest hugs.

Also, our warmest thoughts are with the rest or your family.

Lots of love

CanTeen NSI

Akua was diagnosed with Cancer in 2009 and she passed away on the 25th of April 2010. She is with the lord now. – “…and the dust returns to the ground it came from and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7

Gareth Weatherston from Pams, CanTeen’s Premier Partner, talks to us about Cooking Without Looking (CWL) and the Pam’s relationship.

Gareth has been with Foodstuffs for 19 years and is the Foodstuffs Dunedin Distribution Centre Manager. Foodstuffs brand Pam’s is CanTeen’s Premier Partner and help CanTeen sell bandannas through New World, PAK’nSAVE, and Four Square, and support with product donations (like the ingredients for CWL). Pams also helps fund the Bandanna Challenge advertising campaign allowing us to promote our message throughout the country.

CWL was a CanTeen Otago peer support workshop facilitated by “That Blind (Dunedin) Woman” Julie Woods, held at Otago Polytechnic. Dunedin City Council contributed funds towards the peer support workshop, Otago Polytechnic donated their student kitchen facilities and CanTeen’s key partner Pams kindly donated the truffle ingredients.

The idea behind CWL is to give CanTeen members the chance to experience an everyday task for most of us as a blind person. Gareth says “it was very much a learning experience, I didn’t realise how hard it would be and how much you take your vision for granted”. The hardest thing was “finding out which ingredient was which. I struggled between the coconut and biscuit crumbs!”

Gareth loves his rugby and local club and given the chance to create a CanTeen bandanna his would be a rugby ball shaped Otago emblem with his club logo, the Green Island Grizzly climbing out of the middle. Speaking of sports Gareth’s pick to win the world cup is Spain.

Mainfreight keep on truckin’Donna Sim is the Claims Manager for Mainfreight Transport and Precision, specialising in fragile freight. Donna has been with the company for 14 years. Mainfreight provides huge support to CanTeen particularly during Bandanna Challenge when they ship tens of thousands of our bandannas around the country!!

Donna says CanTeen Members may not realise but Mainfreight drivers volunteer their time to carry CanTeen freight, doing it for love. Given the chance to design a bandanna, Donna would design something to do with the planets but also likes the idea of a big blue truck on a bandanna! Like many CanTeeners, Donna is sports-mad and her younger brother has even represented

the Iron Blacks, New Zealand’s Grid Iron team!

Donna loves music, especially Kings of Leon and enjoys the odd slice of cheesecake! Donna’s pick to win the Football World Cup is Germany, but only if New Zealand don’t win it.
