On Friday, March 1st, the Timothy House held their talent show. Some of the talents that the students shared included singing, dancing, acting, impressions, jokes, art, sports tips,   jewelry making, fashion, designing, cooking, sports, and comedy acts. IT’S UP TO THE JUDGES Students had to audition to get into the talent show. Pretty much everyone got in, except the judges did tell students that they had to shorten their talent to about one minute so everyone could participate. They also told us that it needed to be school appropriate. FINISHING TOUCHESThe Talent show was held at the Timothy House community meeting. There was over 100 people watching the performers. The acts were all excellent. It was so fun to watch all the great Timothy House talents. We will list a couple of great people who performed, even though all of the

Timothy House acts were fantabulous. Emma Shamieh from fourth grade performed a monologue act. Aleksandra Klimentova, Katherine Freedman, and Maya Singh, all from third grade performed a song. Sophie Velichko and Chloe Droumunq, from fourth grade, performed an amazing gymnastics performance, among other fabulous talents that day.

Everyone was a winner because of their amazing talents. Even if you didn’t perform you were still a winner because you have a spark of genius. So good job for all of you in Timothy House!

Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens football team just won a Super Bowl and retired- ALL in his last season. Before he was drafted to this team, he played in Miami for the Dolphins.

FROM THE START

Ray was born on May 15, 1975 in his Hometown of Lakeland, Florida. He has played in the NFL for seventeen

years and he is currently thirty seven-years old.      

BACK FOR SECONDS     This is not the first Super Bowl Ray Lewis has won. In fact, it is his second. He also made the Hall Of Fame of the National Football League, and he thanks his dad for inspiration. But, unfortunately for fans, he has just retired after this recent Super Bowl in 2013. It is a big disadvantage to football that Lewis is now gone. -Trevor Holzer

FOURTH GRADE VISITS WASHINGTON D.C.!Finally, the field trip that the fourth graders have been waiting for all year is approaching. From April 24 to April 26, 2013, fourth grade will be in Washington D.C, collecting knowledge about their units of inquiry.

FEELINGS ON THE TRIP“I’m really excited because I get to experience going to Washington D.C., and I think it will be fun because we are going as a class and it’s overnight, and it’ll be really amazing to see the White House and hang out with our classmates while we learn so much,” Skyler Rosenberg in fourth grade, tells Timothy House Times.

“I’m excited because we will be staying in a hotel and we will get to do fun activities, like going bowling,” Eric Brauer, also a fourth grader, states.

“I feel good about it because we will get to do fun stuff during our stay,” fourth grader Trevor Holzer says.

“I’m sort of nervous, but overall, I’m really excited,” says Fuschia Steward.

“I love the idea, and I can’t wait to go,” Alyssa Hannagan says to Timothy House Times.

WHAT DO THE TEACHERS THINK?“I am excited to be taking the fourth grade to Washington D.C. for the first time!” Ms. Goodman, 4A teacher, says. “I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited to go,” Mr. Beddows, 4B teacher, says. “I’m excited to spend time with my students out of school,” Ms. Sharik, also 4B teacher, tells Timothy House Times. “I want to meet President Obama while we are there!” says Ms. Weldzius, 4A teacher.

BUT WHAT WILL WE DO?During the trip, the 4th graders will stay at a hotel as roommates, and they will take tours around the city, learning about their past units. They will be looking at buildings around the city to deepen their knowledge of Architecture and visit important government landmarks. The fourth graders will be traveling to Washington D.C. by bus. And if you’re not in fourth grade yet, you’ll be looking forward to next year!

LEGENDS OF DWIGHT

Julian Casablancas is a famous rock star that went to Dwight and he plays a whole lot of instruments. Julian was born in New York on August,23rd in 1978.

He went to Dwight, where he met two members of the band, Nick Valensi and Fabrizio Moretti. His first song was an Indie Rock song. He sings and plays the Keyboard, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and the Harmonica. Within the band, he has been a singer, songwriter, and  musician. Some of his other songs were under different genres of music like New Wave, Alternative Rock, and Garage Rock. He started playing at 1998 and is still playing, today.

LITTLE GIRL, BIG GYMNASTICS STAR!

Once, she was in a slump in a gymnastics summer camp. It was hard for her to complete her gymnastics routines, successfully. Don’t get me wrong, Sophie is the nicest person, and she is talented at gymnastics. She is also funny and smart. She is also a great role model to have. However, everybody has mistakes so don’t quit. She says, you should keep trying until you you have met your level of confidence.

PRACTICE = PERFECTSophie is amazingly good at gymnastics. At recess, Sophie is always practicing her moves. She can do way more than just a regular handstand and a cartwheel. Sophie is the new Gabrielle Douglas (2012 gold medal-winning gymnastics star). Sophie is Dwight’s back-flipping star genius!

HELP AND DREAMSThe person that was right beside her when practicing from an early age was actually her coach’s teenage-helper, Natalia. She became Sophie’s role model and helped her work on her skills during practice. However, not all of Sophie’s success was because of her role model. So if your new role model is Sophie, which I recommend, especially because of her confidence, or even if you don’t like gymnastics, remember follow your dreams, and try your best. Thanks to Sophie she has encouraged us all to believe and follow our dreams!

NOT PERFECT She was only four- years-old when she started. Ever since then, she’s been practicing. Now, nine-year-old Sophie Velichko is a future gold-medal winning Olympian and gymnastics star. Even though Sophie is excellent at gymnastics, she has slumps too.

ART... OR NOT

In art at Dwight, we have an amazing, spectacular, groovy, and awesome art teacher, Ms. Lopez-Lewis! But there is a figure that Ms. Lopez-Lewis despises, a stick figure!

Of all the history in art, realism, cubism, medieval, renaissance, romanticism, modern, stick figures are not art! Stick figures are sticks with a circle on it. I mean, what kind of art is that?  Hello, earth to art! Out of all beautiful realistic art, really, a stick figure?! Dude, it takes about 3 seconds to draw it! Oh, you as parents see your kids after school and they say “Look, I made a picture!” The parents say, “Oh, that’s beautiful!”

Let’s imagine a preschooler made a drawing, and that drawing is a stick figure. You as parents really think it’s good? Or you just wanna make the kid happy? Because we as kids don’t get that. We actually think you like it. But if you really did like it, really? Dude, as I said earlier, stick figures are sticks with circles on it!

I used to (a couple days ago) draw stick figures all the time. I still do it, but only in a short

sketch and when I need to. Stick figures are not used for actual art. Ya’ might wanna start to educate your kids about stick figures or they’ll end up being spoken to by their art teacher. “Once you leave kindergarten, it’s time to draw real figures and to understand why we shouldn’t draw stick figures because we need to know the real human body... such as the flesh, muscle, and bones,” says our amazing art teacher, Ms. Lopez-Lewis.

Ok kids, so now it’s time to think of the real human body and to understand... stick figures are not art!

Minecraft is the new hit game! It is a voxel-based video game made in Sweden. The game company is Mojam, and the person who made this game is top notch.

Everybody loves it because you get to design buildings and it is very fun. There are different modes like Survival mode and Creative mode. Survival mode is when there is limited health and resources for the player, and creative mode allows the player to have unlimited health and resources.

WONDERFUL WEBSITESThere are websites for Minecraft like Skindex, Forums, MinerShoes.net, and Minecraft Planet, that discuss strategies and new features. The reason it’s so popular is because you can play with friends and defeat the wrath of the monsters.

You can also experience what it was like when people had to survive in the world at an earlier time. There  are servers, where multiple players can use the game, like the Hunger Games serves Diamondcraft server and Minecraft Tekkit.

GET MY MONSTERSThere are different blocks and decorations, as well as torches, and you get to capture monsters with names like Creepers, Skelton, Endermen, Pigmen, Spiders, Blaze, Magma Cube, Zombies, Wither, Nether Skeletons, Enderdragon, and don't forget Herobrine! WHO LIKES WHAT?Jaden Majid, a fourth grade student, says his favorite block in Minecraft is Jungle Wood. Daniel Halpern, also in fourth grade, likes Tekkit and many other kids do to!

Also, Jordan Sotomayor, in fourth grade, likes Spawning Animals and Monsters. A lot of people like Diamond! Alden Wilson, in fourth grade, likes to use Gold and Obsidian in the game. You also get to play as a guy named Steve.

You can craft with dirt, sand, wood, stone, and more! People can make their own skin too.

For years and years and years and years, and years and years and years and years, the world has been sustained by natural resources. But, humans have kind of damaged that.          We often take our natural resources for granted, especially water, which means that we waste them.

WATER, WATER, WATER . . . . . . Here at the Dwight School, we are lucky because we can just walk over to a water  fountain, press a button, and there comes water, clean water. While we do that, people in Africa and Asia walk miles just to get dirty water for their everyday use. In Africa, one in seven people lacks access to clean water, and one in three people lacks a safe toilet.

The consequences of this is that young children  and women spend three to six hours collecting dirty water per day.  This results in children, mostly girls, not being  able to go to school, and women do not have time to work and earn money. Each day, 2,000 to 4,000 children die due to water related illnesses, such as  diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid.

Treasure the President This is the first year that there has ever been a student council in Timothy House. The student council was made when some fifth grade students got inspired by the upper school student council so they asked Ms. Hirschman if they could have a student council and luckily, she said yes.  Later in the year, each class in Timothy House had a representative. Third graders had to write a paper on why they would be a good representative. The teachers picked a few and showed them to the class to vote on three. Then, there was only three left and the class had to vote. Finally, every class in Timothy House had a representative. Fifth grade had a president and vice president who were the head of the Timothy

House student council. They are the ones who make all the changes in the school and they talk about it with the representatives. It is helpful that everyone in Timothy House has a voice because the representatives let other people in Timothy House gives them ideas for them to share with the president and vice president.

The student council is making changes and having many fundraisers. They are trying to make an after-school gym you can go to if your parents don’t come right away. They had a lot of fundraisers like “Pennies for Patients,” where you bring in some change and you can bring in a dollar and you can dress down. They are making many more changes and fundraisers.

Student council president, Toby Treasure, is an 11-year- old boy who was born in Australia, and he is our student council president! He wants to make sure everybody has a say so Dwight is more than perfect for everybody!

Toby checks with Ms. Hirschman to make sure all decisions that are made are safe for students. He also meets with each grade, regularly. But, if you have not met him personally, it doesn't mean you can't do anything. You should help generate ideas and tell them to your representatives. You can especially talk to Toby Treasure about math because it is his favorite activity. Please help Toby Treasure to help the Dwight School to be a better place!    -Daniel Bergevin

THE LOVELY LOUNGEYou may think that the students’ lounge is just a place to hang out. Oh, but no. So many people dug and dug to get you that nice room. You would not believe how many tanks were full of dirt. Almost 200! You can also thank Ms. Clark and Mr. Dowling for getting those comfy chairs and nice tables. If you pass Ms. Clark or Mr. Dowling’s office say, “Thanks!”

THE GIGANTICGREAT HALL

If you read the “The Lovely Lounge” then you’d know that Dwight construction workers dug this summer, but not exactly for the Great Hall. At first they had a backyard then they tore that down and built the Great Hall. It now has rock floors, gymnastics rings, and a jungle gym. It has a projector a movie screen, and a dance floor!

The new boys’ locker room is interesting. It has benches, bathrooms, and lockers. If you are a girl then this pretty sounds pretty similar to the girls locker room. Am I correct? Oh, but it has the coach’s office and water fountain and the lockers are only for grades 6-12. If you pay close attention then you’ll know that the boys locker room is pretty sweet.

FASHION TIPS FOR SPRINGDo you know the latest trends? Well no need to fear because I am here, telling you all the latest fashion trends. These are the top 5 fashion tips for this spring.

Those are your top 5 fashion tips for the spring make sure to follow them or else, trust me, it will not look so hot.   -contributing reporter Barrie Davis

1. Look for more neon colors. Trust me, the colors will really pop in the sunlight.

2. Right now, mini or traditional waist length vests are in! In addition, to looking like a popstar you can even get studs on the collar.

3. Another style thats in right now is FLORA AND FAUNA meaning sheer pastel with a design of flowers and nature.

4. Accessorize! Silk scarfs and Fedora hats are really in and if you want you can jazz up your outfit and wear some hot new sparkly bangles!

5. Shoes always make an outfit. This spring, look for open toed wedges and cute sandals.

Mr. Dowling is in charge of the all Dwight buildings. He thought of the idea of building the lounge, the girls and boys’ locker room, great hall, and so much more that we don’t even know about. His office is in room M22. He says, “There is no time like the present,” which means “You should do it now.” One saying he has for the maintenance crew is “Job well done.”

STUDENTS’ OPINIONS OF FURBIESWe asked Sasha Klimentova what her favorite Furby was. She said it was a pink and turquoise colored Furby. She said, “A Furby is more than a mechanical toy. It’s like a dog with no responsibility!” We asked Emma Shamieh what her favorite furby was. She said it was a special Christmas edition Furby. Its color was green and red with a fake candy cane in its hand. Emma said, “I love the Christmas edition Furby because it’s so cute with the red and green colors and I love the cute candy cane popping out of the Furby’s hand!” We asked Laura Barbero, a sixth grader, what her favorite Furby was. She said it was a purple Furby. She said, “It’s like a cute small pet!”

ALL ABOUT A FURBYFurby... lands at Dwight! What is a Furby? A Furby is a fluffy, cute, funny and lovable creature with a mind of its own. Everyone is talking about them! Furbies have many different personalities like happy, excited, grumpy, shy, sad, angry and much more!

TEACHERSWe asked Ms. Kress, who teaches 3rd grade, what Furby she liked. She said she would like a white colored Furby. She said, “I like white because it reminds me of a cat or dog.” We also asked Ms. Goodman, who teaches 4th grade, what Furby she likes. She said she likes the red colored Furby. She stated, “I like it because red is my favorite color.”

SPECIAL FURBIESNot only are there regular Furbies, but there are special edition Furbies too, like Emma in 4th grade said. There are so many special Furbies! There are fashion Furbies, holiday Furbies, and animal Furbies.

FURBIES HIT DWIGHT

A shoulder buddy is a small magnetic troll that sits on your shoulder. They come in different colors, have different names, and they each have different personalities. Some of the shoulder buddies like flowers and others enjoy electricity or just plain giggling.

SHOULDER BUDDY FUNThere are so many ways to have fun with your shoulder buddies! The most common way to play with shoulder buddies is to wear them. To wear, it you take a little magnet and put it under your shirt and put the shoulder buddy on top, and voila! Like magic, the shoulder buddy sticks.

You can also make clothes for them and dress them up! You can play with  there hair, giving them them short buzz cuts, making them braids, and more! Giulia Montrone, a fourth grade student, likes to make houses out of shoeboxes for her shoulder buddies. She likes “Pal” because he likes animals, “Crush” because she is pink and purple, and “Princess” because she is hot

pink. Skyler Rosenberg, another fourth grade student, likes “Dash” the best because she thinks he is an active shoulder buddy with her two favorite colors, blue and green.

TEACHERS TOO!Even the teachers are into shoulder buddies. Both Ms. Sharik and Mr. Beddows have shoulder buddies in fourth grade, just like their students.
