ons This winter, South Shore Arts proudly presents the work of
African-American folk artist William Dawson (1901-1990) in an exhibition organized by the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery, Alabama. Several dozen carved wood sculptures, totems and works on paper will be included in this extraordinary show of works created by a man raised on his grandfather’s farm in Huntsville, Alabama, who made his way north to Chicago and didn’t begin creating art until he was in his sixties.
William Dawson grew up on his maternal grandfather Samuel Arnet’s 654-acre farm in Huntsville. Unlike most African-American men of that era, Arnet was not a sharecropper; he purchased the land bit by bit with money he saved while he was a slave. Like most children reared on a farm in the early 1900s, William Dawson rarely attended school. He was needed to help with the farm. Dawson barely completed the fifth grade; however, he also had no desire to become a farmer.
In the summer of 1920, Dawson decided to follow his older brother Leroy to Chicago. He secured a job as an elevator operator at the Chicago Beach Hotel, but found working indoors confining. He returned to Alabama, where he met his wife Oceola, whom he married in 1923. The Dawsons then returned to Chicago with a newborn daughter.
Mr. Dawson was a proud and independent man and took on any job that would provide for his family. For a time, he found work as an office cleaner with the E.E. Aron Company, a wholesale produce distributor, and rose through the ranks to become manager of operations. Dawson was one of the first black men to gain membership in the Teamsters Union. After 38 years and the sale of the E.E. Aron Company looming, Dawson retired and began drawing Social Security. To supplement his income, he took on various part-time jobs, including security desk guard at IBM.
It was while he was at IBM that he began his career as an artist. Dawson would whittle as a way to fill the time during his shift. On his days off he took ceramics and painting classes at the local senior center. He enjoyed making art, but not the formal class setting. He found the teacher’s instruction constraining and the constant chatter of the women in his class distracting. Dawson was striving for originality, something new.
Mr. Dawson and his wife lived in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago. While walking through the alleys and scavenging through local furniture and Goodwill stores, Dawson found discarded table and chair legs that he began using to create figurative sculptures. He used a coping saw and a lathe made from his wife’s sewing machine, a wood file or rasp and a utility knife for detail work. His early work was austere in color, but later Dawson began embellishing the sculptures with bright colors, glitter, animal bones, human hair and stones.
Inspired by his intuition, imagination and memories of his early years on the family farm, Dawson created a wide-ranging body of work. Best known are his totems. Without any prior knowledge of Native American totem poles, Dawson stacked his carved heads atop one another, often

resting them on a building or other architectural feature. Dawson also created three-dimensional carvings that reflect the imagery “revealed in his head.”
They are not specific portraits, but composites of many people, including celebrities, politicians and the people he met throughout his life. Dawson stated that “things reveal to you in your mind what to do; you can see things, you can see what you are making.”
As Mr. Dawson gained confidence in his work, he began experimenting with a less realistic, more Impressionistic approach. This change can be detected in his treatment of eyes. Early works have small, beady eyes. Later works have large embellished eyes. He also began defining his bright red lips with thick black lines providing outlines to his grinning mouths.
Dawson worked simultaneously in sculpture and painting, always approaching both with the same passion. His early paintings incorporate both abstract and realistic elements. He was always open to experimenting with new or non-traditional materials, as well as styles, and even formed sculptural ships from leftover ham or turkey bones.
In the mid-1980s, Dawson experienced several mini-strokes. It became difficult to carve with the agility he had once displayed; however, he retained his agility with a paintbrush. Dawson began to look deeper into his imagination for new ideas. Subject matter such as flying homes, futuristic architectural buildings and landscapes
with apocalyptical skies occupied his paintings. One of Dawson’s greatest sources of encouragement
was the artist Roger Brown. Like Dawson, Brown had also relocated from Alabama. They became good friends, and Dawson claimed that Brown’s friendship and advice pushed him to be a better artist. Furthermore, Brown not only introduced Dawson’s work to many friends and collectors, but also brought Dawson’s work to the attention of gallery owner, Phyllis Kind.
Many of Dawson’s patrons visited him in his modest two-bedroom apartment on a regular basis for the rest of his life. The attention Dawson received brought him great pleasure, but also amused him, as he wasn’t quite sure why people found interest in him or his work.
Dawson was successful in Chicago, but it was not until his inclusion in the exhibition Black Folk Art in America, 1930-1980 held at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 1982 that he found national prominence.
He was a prolific artist who created more than 500 carvings and more than 150 drawings. Despite his significant accomplishments, Dawson did not consider himself to be an artist, believing instead that it was God creating the work through him.
The exhibit will begin February 9 and continue through April 20, 2014. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, March 2, 2014, from 1-3pm.

Only One You is the newest in a series of literacy-based art programs created by South Shore Arts. Based on the book written and illustrated by Linda Kranz, Only One You is appropriate for pre-school level classrooms. The story imparts classic pearls of wisdom such as “Know when to speak; know when to
listen,” and “Blend in when you need to; stand out when you have the chance,” advice that is appropriate for all ages.
The South Shore Arts project that accompanies a reading of the story involves each child creating a fish similar to those in the book. Children cut out colored fish and embellish them with paper shapes, stickers and crayons. Each fish has its own personality, but the end result is an entire school of fish for classroom display. The project demonstrates the positive aspects of individuality while showing how we all go together. The program was piloted this year in East Chicago pre-kindergarten classrooms with funding from the Foundations of East Chicago.
South Shore Arts began a literacy-based art series ten years ago with Polar Express at Substation No. 9 in Hammond, where first-grade teachers were seeking an art experience for their students that would coincide with a unit on the Chris Van Allsburg book. The program has become a much-loved tradition.
All South Shore Arts literacy-based art programs include a copy of the book for every classroom we visit. Teachers use the book during their language arts and social studies lessons before and after the South Shore Arts classroom visit.
The sequential, step-by-step directions given to students during the workshop are of great value to classroom teachers. “Students needed to use listening skills, which is so important in the classroom,” said Jade Navarre, second-grade teacher at Yost Elementary School in Chesterton, Indiana. “Following directions is also an important skill that was addressed during our workshop. I love the program!”

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra launched its 72nd season with Cirque de la Symphonie, an Opening Concert and Gala held at the Radisson Hotel and Star Plaza Theatre on Friday, September 20, 2013. Guest artists Cirque de la Symphonie delighted the 2,100-person crowd. Jugglers, contortionists and aerial artists performed gravity-defying feats in, around and above the orchestra. There were lots of oohs and aahs from the audience! Everything was perfectly choreographed, while the Symphony played classical and modern music favorites including Tchaikovsky’s Waltz from Sleeping Beauty, Bernstein’s Overture to Candide and Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.
Indiana University Northwest was the evening’s Presenting Sponsor. The Gala raises money every year to benefit the music and education programs of the Symphony, the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Symphony Chorus. Some 300 gala guests were treated to delicious food and excellent service by the Radisson Hotel’s chef and staff. A crew of staff led by Jackie Wickland created the most whimsical table decorations depicting acrobats, jugglers, and circus animals, all made from re-cycled silk flowers and other repurposed art materials. What imagination! They were free for the taking at the end of the evening, and there wasn’t a single one left!
The raffle and silent auction were highlighted with dinner for eight donated by Gamba Ristorante and “on the glass” seats at a Blackhawks game with Maestro Muspratt. Winning bidders won a chance to sit on stage with the orchestra for the Holiday Pops concert on December 12th, and the February 14th Valentines Concert, Tosca.
A post concert dessert and champagne reception capped off the evening with Maestro Muspratt, members of the orchestra and the Cirque de la Symphonie performers posing with guests for some keepsake pictures. Special thanks to the Gala committee, board, WANISS and the Symphony and South Shore Arts staff for a wonderful evening and a great start to the season.
Mark you calendars for next year’s Opening Concert and Gala on Friday, September 12, 2014.

Three Northwest Indiana Symphony musicians were honored at this year’s gala for their decades of service to the Orchestra. Yvonne Donald has performed with the Orchestra for 49 years. Yvonne was a product of the Gary Public School System and Emerson High School. She auditioned and was accepted into the Symphony playing the cello as a high school sophomore in 1964. She took private lessons from Frances Monfort.
As a member of the Orchestra, Yvonne has performed with stars such as Jose Iturbi, William Marshall, Dizzy Gillespie, Van Clyburn and the Moody Blues, just to name a few.
“I have tried to live my life as a tribute to my mother, a church organist, who sacrificed everything for me and taught me the rewards of the gift of music,” Yvonne said. Yvonne and her husband Larry have retired to Memphis, Tennessee, with their dog, Angel.
Elaine Shumway has performed with the Orchestra for 47 years, having joined in 1966 (she took off two years to do post-graduate work for her Masters in French Literature and International Relations).
Elaine has played with a number of groups around the area, including the Southwest Michigan Symphony for 35 years and the LaPorte Symphony for 25 years. Additionally she has played at Thornton Community College, Southshore Orchestra, Summer Rhapsody in Valparaiso and with quartets and church orchestras.
“As my profession was being a high school French teacher, music was my avocation,” Elaine said. “Music has always been an important part of my life, and Lord willing, it always will be.”
Denise Kirkland has performed with the Orchestra for 44 years. She is the principal clarinetist and an instructor of clarinet at Valparaiso University. Over the years, Denise has served on the Orchestra’s staff as interim executive director, personnel manager and librarian.
With her passion for music education, Denise designed and implemented the symphony’s successful Toot ’n Doodle and Strings in Schools programs. A narration that she and her husband wrote for Saint-Seans’ The Carnival of Animals has been performed by major orchestras.
Denise earned her Master of Music in clarinet and her Bachelor of Music Education from the Indiana University School of Music, where she was a student of Bernard Portnoy. She graduated with distinction and was awarded IU’s prestigious Performer’s Certificate.
As a 7th grader, Denise was a charter member of the Hammond Area Youth Orchestra, now the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra.
