Winter 2014 President’s Message Dear ESP Members, Greetings to each of you! I hope that this newsletter finds you all well! I just got back from attending the National ESP Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, IN on October 6th-9th, with a great group of KY Alpha Kappa Chapter members. We are excited that we had a large delegation from Kentucky including 13 active and one lifetime member. We were also honored to have 3 national award winners in attendance, 5 concurrent session presenters and 3 guests. The ESP Professional Development Committee has been super busy making plans for our 2015 ESP- Alpha Kappa Chapter Annual Meeting that will be held March 18th & 19th at the Signature Club in Lexington, KY. The format for this year's meeting will change a little to reduce the cost for lifetime members and anyone on limited professional development funds. We will start on Wednesday, March 18th in the afternoon with our annual meeting. During the meeting, we are going to have a networking event along with finger foods. We will also host an officer/chairperson transition training immediately following the annual meeting to make sure that officer and chairpersons are receiving all of the information they need to perform the duties of their new position. The next day will include an in-service training focusing on evaluation, which we all need. This will serve to emphasize the importance of this training and evaluation as a whole. Dr. Henning has graciously agreed to pay for our presenter, Dr. Stephanie Evergreen. The funding for this training will come from the Steven and Nancy Wills Cooperative Extension Professional Development and Enrichment Endowed Fund. Although we will still have a registration fee to cover the facilities and food, this will greatly reduce the cost for us. Special thanks to Dr. Henning, Joan Martin, ESP Professional Development Chair, will include more information in this newsletter regarding this. Paula Jerrell, ESP Membership Chair, has already sent out the information regarding your dues renewal. We would love to have you join us! The ESP- Alpha Kappa Chapter Board decided to go ahead and start collecting dues for those that want to avoid the holiday season. See more details from Paula inside regarding your dues. Janet Turley-Scholarship, Grants & Recognition Chair will be sending out information soon regarding award opportunities. We would love to have many award recipients next year at the ESP National Meeting in Idaho. More details to follow. Special thanks to the ESP Alpha Kappa Chapter Board for their hard work! Check out our website that Tyrone Gentry constantly updates for more information. Our Chapter would not function nearly as effective without Tyrone's assistance. Thanks once again to Lyndall Harned, Past President, for his leadership and to Dr. Jones as President-Elect for his support! We are working hard to meet the needs of our membership and keep everyone informed. Thanks again for the opportunity to represent you as Kentucky's ESP Alpha Kappa Chapter President! Joan Martin How exciting are your Power Point Presentations?

Are people flocking to your poster or display at meetings? Ready to make a bigger impact with your research and evaluation data?

Dr. Stephanie Evergreen will be joining us this year as the presenter of our 2015 ESP in-service opportunity. This in-service, with one of evaluation's thought leaders, will show attendees how to make a larger impact within their workplace.

Pam Sigler had an opportunity to attend a session by Dr. Stephanie Evergreen earlier this year and was very enthused about the benefits of presenting data effectively. Thus, Dr. Evergreen will be joining us for an in-service on Thursday, March 19, the day after our annual meeting. Her presentation is funded by the Steven and Nancy Wills Cooperative Extension Professional Development and Enrichment Fund.

Dr. Evergreen describes the in-service as follows: “Death by power point won’t literally kill your audience, but it will cause them to check their messages, flip ahead in the handout and fall asleep.” Maybe we’ve all experienced this. You will learn the science behind presenting data effectively. You will learn principles of data visualization, slideshow and report design that support legibility, comprehension and retention of your data in the minds of clients. You will learn to communicate more effectively with peers and clients by focusing on the best use of color, arrangement, graphics and text. Handouts and newsletters will look more professional as you apply visual processing theory and graphic design best practices.

The cost will be $30, including a delicious lunch. You can register for the in-service on KERS.

A Note To ESP Lifetime Members Martha Nall, Chair Summer is winding down and it won't be long before we will be focusing on the ESP Annual meeting. The Lifetime members have two annual awards presented at the ESP Annual meeting. The Outstanding Retiree Service Award recognizes the contributions of an ESP Lifetime member for their service to the community or the ESP Chapter since retiring from Cooperative Extension. I know there are many of you who are making significant contributions to your community. We want to recognize you. Please nominate an active, involved retiree so we may recognize him/her at the Annual Meeting. The Lifetime members also award a student a UK student a $500 scholarship. Your student or the student of an Extension volunteer or supporter is eligible. Please encourage them to apply for the scholarship. For a complete description of these awards and application forms go to: http://epsilonsigmaphi.ca.uky.edu/awards. One last note, we need your e-mail addresses. It helps save on printing and postage costs and gets the newsletter to you in a more timely manner. If you received a mailed copy of this newsletter and have an e-mail address, please send it to Martha Nall, Lifetime Chair at [email protected].

Public Issues Donna Fryman, Chair As an ESP member, you are encouraged to attend the 2015 Public Issues Leadership Workshop (PILD). This is an excellent opportunity to help you build leadership skills, see advocacy in action and network with other extension professionals. This conference is not just for a couple of delegates from the ESP organization. The theme this year is Public Issues Leadership Development: Imagining Extension – Eyes on the Future.... It will be held April 12-15, 2015 in Crystal City, Virginia. To learn more about this conference visit www.jcep.org. Early Bird Registration ends March 20th. The end of a calendar year is approaching. Many employees look at maximizing their resources as they prepare for tax season. For Federal employees, you may want to order the 2015 Federal Employees Almanac. Pre-orders are being taken now through the website at http://www.FederalDaily.com. Plus, you can sign up for a free newsletter on this site. FERS and CSRS employees may want to get the free planning guide on “How Much Money Do You Need to Retire?” from http://www.NARFE.org.

Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunity Jennifer Klee, Chair Attention Extension workers! Do you have a student at UK? Take advantage of this scholarship opportunity. The ESP Retirees established this scholarship fund several years ago after hosting numerous silent auctions at our spring annual meetings. The $500 one-time award is offered each year. Other qualifying applicants include undergraduate students from Extension volunteers and supporters. Check out the application on the Alpha Kappa website found at: http://ces.ca.uky.edu/epsilonsigmaphi/lifetime. The deadline is February 1, 2015 with forms due to Jennifer B. Klee, 805 Patterson Rd., Versailles, KY 40383. The recipient will be recognized at the ESP annual meeting on March 18 in Lexington.
