A Different Look

You may notice that there are a few changes to NBCC’s publication: The Broadcaster. Most notable of these changes is the transition into a quarterly edition. Our goal is to produce a 3-month seasonal calendar. By doing so we hope to provide an opportunity to look a little further ahead to what’s happening within the various ministries at the church. We’d like you to be able to plan even further ahead and to not be surprised by events that you didn’t know were coming up.

You may also notice another difference. The Broadcaster looks different. We felt that we had an opportunity, with the change of growing the Broadcaster, to give it a facelift. The Broadcaster serves us in many ways. One of those ways is the an impression it makes on anyone who reads it. We want our readers to know that we are dedicated to finding any way to improve. That improvement doesn’t stop at the Broadcaster but also on the more important fronts of worship and discipleship. The changes to our Broadcaster serve as a sign of our ever-forward movement towards betterment, growth, and refinement.

Hopefully its not just on paper…

WHAT DO HUSBANDS AND WIVES WANT MOST IN MARRIAGE?

Notes from our Senior Minister | Ron Hanson

What do husbands and wives want most in marriage? It’s probably not what you think.

Because marriage was instituted by God, what God has to say about marriage is going to sound very different from what you’re going to hear from Oprah or Dr. Phil or just about anyone else you’re going to hear on TV. That’s because marriage isn’t simply a commitment, it isn’t simply a piece of paper, it isn’t simply a ceremony performed by a minister or a justice of the peace; marriage is the spiritual union between a man and a woman in which God supernaturally causes the two to become one.

Back in 1999, Syracuse University interviewed a large number of married couples and asked: What is it you want the most from your spouse in your marriage?

Can you guess what the number one response was among the women? The number one thing wives want from their husbands in marriage is affection. They want to feel loved by their husbands. So guys, if you’re smart, you’re thinking if your wife fell in love with you while you were dating, why not do some of the things you did while you were dating? Like take her out on a date every now and then. Bring

her flowers for no reason. Call her on your way home from work and say, “Honey, how about once you’re done shoveling the driveway we go get a big bag of White Castles?” Guys, your wife wants to know, beyond a shadow

of a doubt, with your words as well as your actions, that you love her.

Now in that same survey from Syracuse University, what do you think was the number one response from men when they were asked

what they wanted most from their spouse in marriage?

It wasn’t affection. It wasn’t sex. The number one thing husbands want from their wives in marriage is respect. Men are fulfilled in marriage when their wives make them feel important, and capable, and respected. So ladies, if you’re smart, you’re going to praise your husband for his accomplishments at work. People at work are praising him; how much more should you? Let h im know you appreciate even the little things he does around the house. After 29 years of marriage Judy knows that I’m no handyman, but when I do something even as simple as keeping the toilet from running, she tells me I’ve done a good job. Ladies, your husband wants to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you respect him.

Now why do you think the responses of the wives and husbands would be so different? It’s because that’s the way God made us. Did you know that? In Ephesians 5:25 the apostle Paul writes: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. And then he continues in verse 33: However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must…do what? Respect her husband.

While we all want to be loved and respected, for the most part, for most couples, husbands kind of assume their wives love them. What they need is for their wives to respect them, and to show that respect in demonstrable ways. And for most couples, wives kind of assume their husbands respect them. What they need is for their husbands to love them, and to show that love in demonstrable ways.

What do husbands and wives want most in marriage? The needs God built into them when he made the two one.

During the month of December, it’s easy to get caught up in the Christmas spirit. Decorations line the streets, displays fill the stores, carols ring, and lights twinkle. In December, Christmas spirit is abundant. But what happens in January, as it’s time to put away the tree, or as the cold weather stretches into March? As summer approaches, where will our Christmas spirit be then? In a famous line from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge says, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Is it possible? Can we keep Christmas in our hearts all year long? Blogger Rachel Reeves wrote that keeping Christmas in your heart is “about the overwhelming joy that Christmas can bring . . . should you choose to let it.”

Overwhelming joy is found when you realize that your entire salvation and purpose on this earth can be inextricably knit to a small child, lying in a manger, the one called Jesus “because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)

Overwhelming joy is found when you realize that this whole world isn’t about you or the presents under the tree, but that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Overwhelming joy is found when you realize that you are blessed beyond belief and so your job now is to go out and be a blessing and to “love one another, for love comes from God.” (1 John 4:7)

That is the Christmas I hold in my heart. That is the overwhelming joy and kindness I want to feel each and every day, even in the middle of July.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY… A DRIVE THRU EVENT

December 13th and 14th | 6:30pm to 8:30pm | Miriam Ward

This year NBCC will again present our outdoor “live” version of The Christmas Story. Hundreds of visitors are expected again as we present the story of Jesus’ birth. For 32 years our church has shared the message of “Good News” to the community in this manner. For two evenings each December the church frontage is transformed with scenery, music, people in costumes, and live animals to tell the story of the first Christmas. Visitors remain in their cars as they drive past the many scenes, read scripture posted on signs, and listen to music while experiencing The Christmas Story. We pray people in each car are blessed, whether this is their first visit or if their family makes this an annual tradition. Many thousands have been blessed by this event in the past three decades.

On Saturday morning, December 13th volunteers are invited for breakfast at 8:00am before beginning to set up scenery, lights and signs or helping to arrange things inside. Nearly 150 volunteers are needed

during the Drive Thru performances to wear costumes or handle other jobs, both inside and outdoors. Youth have a special opportunity to be part of the Drive Thru as we invite them, their families, and friends to volunteer especially on Saturday evening. First they will enjoy being outdoors in The Christmas Story together and then warm up inside during the same break times. Some special activities and fun times together are being planned for youth during the break periods.

There are many opportunities to be involved and help. Please pray about this important outreach and sign up to be part of the event on December 13th and 14th.

Thank you in advance to everyone who will help in making the 2014 Drive Thru a wonderful time of community outreach and church fellowship.
