Danielle Mohlman speaks with “femme forward” theatre maker and educator Erin Murray.

DialogueEncore Stages in conversation

Erin Murray is a “femme forward” theatre maker and educator. A native of Washington, Erin grew up in University Place, just outside of Tacoma and describes herself as a PNW woman through and through. She’s a director with affiliations with seemingly every theatre in the area and recently added podcast host to her resume with her show That’s WOW: That’s Womxn of Washington, where she talks to femme culture makers and leaders in the area about their work. We had a chance to talk to her about her passion for plays from the female perspective, her love for the Pacific Northwest, and her dream project.

You went to Northwestern in Chicago to get your MFA in directing, but decided to move back to Seattle and grow your career here. What excites you about directing in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest? What about the region inspires you?

We are a region of pioneers in a great time of change, so I knew this would be the best place for me to continue to grow. The major theatre houses have had changes in artistic leadership in the past three years: John Langs at ACT Theatre, Braden Abraham at The Rep, even Aidan Lang at Seattle Opera, and with Andrew Russell moving on, there will be more. Mat Wright has brought new folks to ArtsWest, Kelly Kitchens and Annie Lareau are shaking up programming as the new

heads of Seattle Public Theatre, and newer companies like Forward Flux are finding strong root systems.

After broadening my skill set at Northwestern, I wanted a city where I could continue to direct a broad range of projects and not be confined to one style – and I’m finding that. I’ve worked and studied all over the northern hemisphere and I can tell you that American theatre is lacking a PNW voice. I would like to see that change, and I want to be that change. We are a weird region surrounded by terrifying beauty. David Lynch understood that when he placed Twin Peaks here. I want to explore our voice in American theatre.

I know work by female and non-binary playwrights is very important to you. How do you hope to bring more female playwrights to Seattle stages?

I was awarded a Spark Grant by the Greater Tacoma Foundation this summer, so myself and Ana Maria Campoy will be bringing a semi-staged reading of Tanya Saracho’s bilingual play Fade on a three-venue tour of Tacoma this fall.

I have also been developing a theatre company dedicated to the work of The Kilroys [an organization that publishes an annual industry-wide list of plays by women and non-binary playwrights]

One of STG’s core values is to inspire youth and local artists through training and performance opportunities, which is why we are so thrilled for what’s sure to be another phenomenal year of STG’s More Music @ The Moore. This program provides young artists training and rehearsal time with professional and peer musicians, as well as production and promotional support, with two culminating performances at the historic Moore Theatre on March 16, 2018. In addition to the strong relationships STG has been able to build locally through More Music @ The Moore, we are also proud of the support from the international arts community that this program has garnered. THE PARAMOUNT NOVEMBER 25Manheim Steamroller

AMERICA’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITION! In 1984 Mannheim Steamroller released Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, an album that revolutionized the holiday music industry. Already a multi-platinum recording artist through its Fresh Aire series, founder Chip Davis decided to record an album of Christmas music combining the group’s signature mix of renaissance instruments with rock & roll beats.

The resulting album was a runaway hit and propelled Mannheim Steamroller to become the #1 Christmas music artist in history. The group’s annual Christmas tour, now in its 33rd year, has become a holiday tradition alo

Mannheim Steamroller Live is the group’s most recent album. It celebrates more than 30 years of Christmas favorites and over 40 years of innovative Fresh Aire music.ng with decorating the tree, exchanging presents and spending time with friends and family.

MANNHEIMSTEAMROLLER

About Chip Davis: Visionary, Creator, Arranger and Producer

Chip Davis is the genius behind Mannheim Steamroller and the driving force of American Gramaphone, the largest independent record label in the country. His now-classic Fresh Aire series and unmatched Christmas album sales have brought him international renown. Chip combines the dynamics of musical mastery and technical wizardry to create a style often described as “18th Century Rock-n-Roll.” He named the band Mannheim Steamroller for the 18th century musical technique that we know today as the crescendo.

While Chip is no longer able to perform as a member of the band due to cervical disc damage, he continues to have 100 percent involvement in the Christmas concerts including creative and production direction of the entire tour. Between the two bands Mannheim Steamroller is bringing their renowned holiday tradition to 70 cities for 88 performances this year.

With 19 gold, 8 multi-platinum and 4 platinum certified records, Chip is among an elite group of artists as U2, Jay-Z, The Beach Boys and Michael Jackson with the most such certifications among all recording artists.

Chip resides on a 150-acre farm just outside Omaha, Ne. along with his nine horses, pet turkey, two timberwolves, a family of ducks and other natural critters throughout his woods. His three children all have a variety of musical talents. His 18-year old daughter is a lead singer in an Omaha band and is featured on the Mannheim Steamroller LIVE album. His 26-year old daughter is a special performance vocalist and competitive equestrian while also working at American Gramaphone. Chip’s 21-year old son, an accomplished guitarist, has performed on record tracks.

THE MOORE DECEMBER 5John McLaughlin and Jimmy Herring

encoremediagroup.com/programs A-3

In a career that spans more than five decades, John McLaughlin has honed a personal vision that transcends all boundaries, becoming one of improvised music’s most influential guitarists, composers, and bandleaders. For The Meeting of the Spirits tour, McLaughlin will be joined by the remarkable Jimmy Herring, who has been at the creative forefront of the thriving American rock-jam band movement for 25 years. In this tour, McLaughlin will revisit the pioneering music of his deeply influential, genre-defying Mahavishnu Orchestra. He will be backed by his current band, the 4th Dimension – Ranjit Barot (drums), Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), and Etienne M’Bappé (bass) – each an established composer and recording artist in his own right.

McLaughlin has revealed that these will be his last American performances. He is hoping that all of his friends who have supported him over the years can come out to celebrate this tour with him. After all, it was in America that he met Miles Davis and Tony Williams and played on such trailblazing albums as In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  America was the true birthplace of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Jimmy Herring, best known for his inspired contributions to the Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, The Dead, and others, will be co-headlining each show with his own band. “Herring possesses the heart and soul of a rocker, the chops and harmonic awareness of a jazz artist, and the simpatico personality of a jam-band player,” according to Guitar Player magazine.

On The Meeting of the Spirits tour, separate sets by Herring and McLaughlin will be followed by the two joining forces for an expansive closing jam based on classic Mahavishnu Orchestra material. The tour will feature the first extended collaborations between two of world’s foremost improvising guitarists. Expect special surprise guests to be added when available.

“The music of Mahavishnu is part of my personal and musical history, and as such it is inseparable from me,” McLaughlin reflects. “To return to these pieces with the experience I’ve had for the past 45 years, since the majority of those pieces were played all those years ago, is very exciting.”

Herring adds, “John’s influence on me is far-reaching. When first hearing him, I was struck by the raw emotion and technical prowess he has. If you listen to John long enough, the layers of all the things that make him unique will reveal themselves…Inner Mounting Flame changed my life and the way I heard music. By the time I heard it in 1980, John had long since moved on and recreated himself, as he has done many times throughout his career. It is an honor and a privilege to do this tour with John and the 4th Dimension.”

McLaughlin’s first extensive U.S. tour in seven years, The Meeting of the Spirits also marks his first extended exploration of the Mahavishnu Orchestra material from seminal albums such as Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Between Nothingness and Eternity, Visions of the Emerald Beyond and more since the band’s original heyday in the 1970s.

“To play the music of Mahavishnu is not for the faint-hearted,” says McLaughlin, who celebrates his 75th birthday in 2017. “In fact, among the only people I know who have succeeded in interpreting Mahavishnu music are my two all-time favorite guitarists: Jimmy Herring and Jeff Beck. Jimmy is simply a great guitar player, and since we see so eye to eye in music, I know we will have some extraordinary musical experiences touring together.”

CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF

CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE

In 2005, at a Broadway industry conference in NYC, Neil Goldberg proposed to many theatre colleagues the concept of producing an affordable, family friendly holiday stage show that would be able to tour and perform virtually every city throughout the United States. The idea was initially met with reluctance as audiences were deemed to be in the celebratory holiday spirit the months of November and December only, making both the investment and scale of any potential production a challenging business venture. At that time, there were limited holiday theatrical entertainment options, mostly local productions of classics and an occasional big city touring show. Neil Goldberg was determined to bring theatres across the country a holiday show inspired by his lifelong ornament collection, talent from around the world and the resources of the rapidly growing and popular Cirque Dreams entertainment brand…a holiday stage spectacle that would become the greatest variety show on the planet.

With perseverance and the 2008 success of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy on Broadway, the concept of Cirque Dreams Holidaze had growing interest and promise. Cirque Productions initially invested $1.5Million to produce the first touring production of Cirque Dreams Holidaze in 2008. The show exceeded all expectations and continued evolving over the years with production enhancements including new sets, elaborate costume additions, original and licensed music, larger scale production numbers, bigger casts and a medley of diversified talent from around the world. Every element of the show celebrated the holiday season combining tradition, spectacle, and imagination with song, variety, and amazement.

As audiences continued to flock to Cirque Dreams Holidaze shows in cities throughout the country from local performing arts centers to The Kennedy Center, popularity and demand grew evolving into multiple simultaneous touring productions. Today, the show is in its 10th anniversary season and features some of the best, never-before-seen, unique and diversified artists from around the world, along with astounding variety acts of all kinds, many of which have been featured on America’s Got Talent and similar TV talent shows in other countries. The show, artists, scenes, costumes, music and everything celebrated in the holiday season continues evolving while Cirque Dreams Holidaze airs as a made for PBS television special throughout the country.

With unparalleled critical acclaim and millions of fans across the country celebrating their holiday season at a Cirque Dreams Holidaze show, the dream of producing the greatest variety show on the planet has become a reality and iconic annual holiday event for families and audiences everywhere.

CIRQUE DREAMS ENTERTAINMENT BRAND

In 1993, Cirque Productions was incorporated by founder Neil Goldberg, who previously owned and operated one of the country’s leading entertainment and event production companies producing shows throughout the world for Microsoft, GM, GE, Prudential, McKesson, Exxon, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and other Fortune 500 companies. Highlight productions included AmEx’s centennial celebration, Super Bowl events, Miss Universe, Disney shows and productions for NBC, ABC and CBS. After researching, developing and producing

an entertainment variety show for an international premier event entitled “Cirque Du Monde” (Circuses of the World), Cirque Productions, Inc. was formed with the vision of creating and producing cirque shows and experiences for corporate America and audiences. Attending one of these private performances, V.P. of Marketing for Bally’s Hotel & Casino, Joe Jimenez, immediately secured Cirque Productions in its first public engagement for 3 years in Atlantic City entitled “Cirque Ingenieux”.

In 2005 the company opened Dream Studios, a 25,000sq.ft. facility supporting the brands growing demand and ensuring product quality, service, management and expansion. The complex has since expanded with scenic, prop and creative workshops. The operation includes multiple creative departments, designers, and an operating team for design, technical, music, production, casting, choreography, sales, administration, travel, visas, product management, marketing, international business relations and more. An in-house rehearsal studio trains over 250 artists yearly from around the world and compose all the original and amazing acts currently employed in Cirque Dreams shows. A complete wardrobe, design and manufacturing facility is housed within the complex and has produced over 15,000 award-winning costumes.

Jill Winters, Creative Content Director, Music & Talent for Cirque Dreams, is one of the only U.S. professional judges invited to juried circus and performing arts festivals throughout the world, engaging the brand with over 10,000 of the newest, most unique and innovative artists annually from across the globe.

To date, Cirque Dreams brand shows have been attended by over 50 million people in more than 350 U.S. cities and 20 countries. Partnerships have been forged with industry leaders and companies in strategic markets where Cirque Dreams shows appear. Broadway and touring shows have been presented in partnership with many including Broadway Across America. Casino partnerships with MGM, Caesars, Harrah’s, Hilton and more have presented shows in top casinos throughout the world. Cirque Dreams brand shows have been produced for Disney, Busch Gardens and Six Flags theme parks. Sony/ATV Music and Cirque Dreams’ partnership generated the creation of the musical touring production “Cirque Dreams

Rocks”. “Cirque Dreams & Dinner” shows began performing in 2010 in partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line and continue performing year-round adding 3 new shows in 2017…Cirque Dreams Epicurean, Cirque Dreams Jungle fantasy and Cirque Dreams & Steam on Norwegian Epic, Breakaway and Getaway. Cirque Dreams Unwrapped continues performing in partnership with Marriott Hotels and Gaylord Palms Resort, Orlando. Student Matinee ProgramIn order to live up to its vision of enriching, inspiring, challenging, and expanding our world through the arts, Seattle Theatre Group is committed to serving as a catalyst for community alliances. We actively work with local schools and organizations to deepen significance of performances, inspire youth and local artists, and provide access initiatives – all through opportunities to engage with the arts. Our Student Matinee program is just one of the many ways we are able to extend beyond our stages and into the lives and hearts of the greater Seattle Community.

Each season, STG presents and produces a number of daytime matinees for school and community groups at our historic Paramount, Moore, and Neptune Theatres. These specially-priced programs make the performing arts accessible to student groups, and include workshop and study materials meant to expand student learning.

This year, STG is offering Student Matinees for the following performances:

Each residency is tailored to suit each school’s individual needs and integrates with existing curriculum to include ancillary activities such as attendance of a performance.

Theatre Access ProgramAs a leader in the arts – locally, regionally, and nationally – Seattle Theatre Group is continuously motivated by a passion for championing diversity in its arts, artists, and audiences. STG presents an average of 600 events annually at The Paramount, The Moore, and The Neptune Theatres, including Broadway productions, concerts, theatre, lectures, education, community, film, and other enrichment programs. It is STG’s fundamental belief that everyone should have a seat in the theatre and our Theatre Access Program goes a long way in ensuring that patrons in all parts of our community have the opportunity to experience the arts.

The Theatre Access Program (TAP) is designed to increase our community’s engagement with the arts through connections to other non-profit organizations whose clients could not regularly afford to purchase tickets. Low-income social service organizations or youth arts organizations are invited to apply for this program which provides subsidized tickets. STG considers it a privilege and obligation to provide access to its theatres and we cherish the partnerships we have had the fortune of building through this program. To learn more about Seattle Theatre Group’s Theatre Access Program and to apply for membership on behalf of your organization, please visit STGPresents.org/Education, send an email to [email protected], or mail to 911 Pine St., Seattle, WA 98101 ATTN: Theatre Access Program.

STG at a GlanceHistoric Theatres Library

As the steward of three historic theatres, STG places great emphasis on protecting the rich history of the Paramount, Moore and Neptune Theatres and the countless, diverse performances that have taken place on their stages. Because of this, STG created the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library. Located on the fourth floor of the Paramount Theatre Office Tower adjacent to the theatre, the STG Historic Theaters Library is free and open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm, as well as during all public and student tours of the Paramount.

The Library first opened its doors to the public on March 1, 2012, though the project began early in December 2010. It required the gathering, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and preserving of over 100 years of historical data. With tens of thousands of volunteer hours to date, this continues to be an on-going project.

The objective of STG’s Historic Theatres Library is three-fold:• To ensure historical material that exists of the three theatres is properly preserved and documented for future

generations.• To provide an educational environment for youth that would offer an opportunity to learn and experience the

remarkable history of the three theatres.• To offer the community a setting in which to become better acquainted with the history and thereby develop a

deeper understanding of three of the few remaining historic theatres in Seattle.

Managed by our long-term volunteers, The Thrashers, and aided by several other dedicated volunteers, the library’s collection includes: materials about the performers that graced the stages over the many decades, documents depicting the peaks and valleys that these theatres had to endure, information on the visionaries responsible for these theatres, priceless memorabilia, and countless signed posters, among other historical resources.

The collection’s contents are searchable by and accessible to everyone, both at the library location in the Paramount building and on STG’s website. For more information about the Library and its services, please visit stgpresents.org/library.

and we hope to have a production in Seattle for summer 2018.

Besides pitching and producing Kilroys' works on my own, I have also developed curriculum for a Kilroys analysis and scene study class that I piloted this summer at Youth Theatre Northwest. The Kilroys work catalogs the most current voices of American theatre. I would love to educate more students, actors, and theatre goers to maximize their appreciation for this new class of daring playwrights. I’m also being more upfront about calling out material I am offered that does not contain complex roles for womxn.

Who’s your favorite playwright working today? Where can we see their work?

Benjamin Benne writes thrillingly theatrical plays with strong female characters and I’m so proud that he is a Seattle playwright. His newest work, Las Mariposas, was produced by Forward Flux in September. Chicago playwright Philip Dawkins writes crackling, smart dialogue and bold femme characters, so I’m pleased he just opened Charm in New York. Arlitia Jones is an Alaskan playwright who was working with the Seattle Rep playwriting program and I want The Rep to fully produce one of her plays because they are fresh, dark, and ambitious while containing her

fabulous sense of humor. Elizabeth Heffron is another Seattle playwright I am proud to know, and I wish the city would support her with more gusto. I’d love to see Mitzi’s Abortion play again in light of our current administration. Finally, Clare Barron is a Kilroy’s playwright from Wenatchee who just won the Susan Smith Blackburn prize for playwriting, so I’d love to see Dance Nation play in Seattle.

What are you most looking forward to seeing in Seattle this season?

Sheila Daniels is directing The Wolves at ACT in the new year and that is going to be fantastic. It’s a deftly written contemporary script with an outstanding director at the helm. I’m also looking forward to Sara Porkalob’s direction of the Kilroys List show Peerless by Jiehae Park in January at ArtsWest. And I’m keeping my ear to the ground for Carol Louise Thompson’s site specific work This Is a Show About Progress, which is expected to be rescheduled after it was thwarted by property developers this summer.

If you could direct any play in the world and stage it in Seattle, which play would you chose? What about the play makes it ripe for Seattle audiences?

If I were given the opportunity to direct any play with full financial support and the city of Seattle as my intended audience, I would find a play that would show off the fantastic range of artists – both emerging and mature – that we have in our city. I have had the privilege of working with many emerging artists since returning to Seattle and I’d love to see them working on the larger stages and becoming familiar faces: Rafael Molina, Jonelle Jordan, and Ayo Tushinde to name a few. Charles Leggett, Amy Thone, Ray Tagavilla, and Kathy Hsieh are just a few established actors I would love to direct.

Seattle is growing, so I would want to bring people both new and native together around our most exciting storytellers. Chicago is a city that

warmly supports its playwrights and actors and I’d love for that zeal to flow to Seattle. With this in mind, I would direct Mary Zimmerman’s Arabian Nights. We could do it in big warehouse in Georgetown, and get Amazon to donate 500 pillows for audience members to sit on. And we’d sell Pagliacci by the slice because if you are new to Seattle you should know about Pagliacci and if you’re familiar with Seattle then you should know Pagliacci pizza is the best. However, considering our current political state, I might suggest David Hare’s Stuff Happens, a deftly written seventeen-person play that examines how we entered the Iraq war. We’d take over the Rainier Club. Don’t worry, there would still be Pagliacci. And $2 Rainier tall boys.

Do you have any plugs? How can folks find more about you and your work?

I fly to Chicago soon to direct the midwest premiere of a Kilroy’s-mentioned play, I Saw My Neighbor on the Train and I Didn’t Even Smile by Suzanne Heathcote at Redtwist Theatre which plays November 19 – December 19. Then I come back and start working the professional premiere of Shakespeare’s Other Women at Island Shakespeare Festival. Everyone should come to Whidbey Island and to enjoy some fantastic female-driven Shakespeare fan fiction. Come grab a whiskey with me before the show! After that, I start working on Seattle Shakespeare Company’s statewide tour including a bilingual production of Twelfth Night that I’m creating with Ana Maria Campoy. And of course, this spring at Youth Theatre Northwest, I’m directing your play, Dust – it’s a movement-infused play boasting a cast of twenty-two that features a dark take on the Peter Pan myth for millennial consumption. There are a few other projects in the works and all information can be found on my website: ErinMurrayDirects.com. My podcast That’s WOW is available on iTunes. < DANIELLE MOHLMAN

Dialogue

Samie Spring Detzer

Samie Spring Detzer is a true Seattleite. She grew up just north of the city and moved here to attend Cornish College of the Arts where she graduated with a BFA in theatre and original works. She’s the Artistic Director of Washington Ensemble Theatre, but always identifies as an actor first, theatre administrator second. She joined the ensemble of WET six years ago and has performed in at least one show a season ever since. This season, she’ll be directing Monstrosity by Lucy Thurber – a co-production between the University of Washington and WET. We had the pleasure of talking to her about WET’s fourteenth season, being an artist in Seattle, and what makes her “an opinionated, loud-mouthed, head-bitch-in-charge” – in everything she does.

You’ve got an incredible season lined up for Washington Ensemble Theatre. What does your season planning process look like?

There’s a saying in the company that “WET is the people in room.” It’s a way to get folks to stay invested and connected to running every aspect of the company. But I also really believe that “WET is the season we produce.” While the dynamic of how the ensemble operates has morphed over the years, the one thing that is always decided as a group is season planning. We read plays all year long and then we go on a winter retreat together to create the season. It’s three days of drinking, reading, and fighting for the plays we want. We aren’t allowed to leave without a season. In the Ensemble, plays must be visually stimulating, thematically complex, and socially conscious.  Our season planning weekend is about holding ourselves accountable to that vision and falling in love with the plays we choose.

The season feels uniquely Seattle. What drew you to each of these plays?

These plays have all had successful runs elsewhere, but they also are all very

polarizing pieces, and in some ways that can be seen as confrontational. As a company, we have a desire to find plays that wouldn’t be done at any other theater in Seattle. In fact, two of these plays have gone through a few major Seattle theatre companies but never got picked up. One thing I love about WET is that our biggest fans hate about half of what we do. It means we’re making art that is imperfect and complicated, and that’s the goal.

The Nether feels especially relevant in Seattle’s booming tech sphere. What are you hoping this will mean for your audiences?

You’re right that this city is dealing with how to engage with the young, tech savvy demographic that has very quickly moved into our bars, apartments, and taken a bit of our community culture. I wouldn’t say we set out to pull in that audience, but WET has the benefit of being a company of millennials – with all the drive, self-importance, fearlessness, and digital literacy that comes with that. I think what we do implicitly draws a young, visionary crowd.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!Love has many faces when two buddies don disguises to test the faithfulness of their fiancèes. Will the women fall for their “new” suitors as the opera’s title (“All women do it”) suggests? And if they do, who is really to blame? Blending bawdy humor and keen insight, the charming Così features some of the sweetest and most ravishing music Mozart ever wrote.

MOZART’S COMEDY ABOUT SEXcosì fan tutte jan 13-27, 2018

What excites you most about being an artist in Seattle?

The truth is I’m afraid most of what I love about being a Seattle artist is slowly getting priced out, modified, and gentrified, to the point that much of the city feels different to me. I do love this place and I’d be lying if I didn’t say what excites me most is that I’m holding out until the bubble bursts and we get to be a small-town big-city again. In the meantime, the food is good, the outdoors are beautiful and it’s given me and many other folks a place to be an artist.

How do you hope to grow and challenge the theatre community here in Seattle?

I hope that WET will continue to expand Seattle’s notion of “a well-made play.” I find Aristotelian-centric theater tired. I prefer an epic slow burn or a firecracker. Surprise me, challenge me, indict me, but never bore me, please! I also think WET, like a few other companies here, has begun to really embrace using politics, equity and social justice to strengthen the art. More of that, please.

Are there any musicians, dancers, or theatre artists that you’re especially excited about this season? Who are you excited to see?

There are so many awesome artists working on this season. We have Sara Porkalob, Jennifer Zeyl, and Frank Boyd all working on Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men. Then we’ll end with ensemble member Bobbin Ramsey directing on The Nether, which will blow your mind. There are so many amazing artists joining us, too many to name. Offering artists opportunities is the best part of my job.

How can folks find more about you and your work?

Check out washingtonensemble.org. I’d also suggest you look at the Shout Your Abortion website. I’m on there, but also, it’s just a great organization you should know about! < DANIELLE MOHLMAN
