LECTURES

The Human GenomeWednesday, January 13th 2:00 – 3:30 pmJoseph Furnish, Ph.D., retired Aquatic Ecologist, U.S. Forest Service, PSW Regional Office, Vallejo, CAFree for OLLI members / $5 for non-members

The story of the evolution of life on earth is remark-able for its richness and beauty. But this fascinating story cannot be fully understood without placing it in the context of molecular biology and recent revela-tions about the human genome and horizontal gene transfer.

Dr. Furnish gives us a chance to get that deeper understanding. His lecture explores how evolution, inheritance, and genetic “engineering” work at the molecular level. And it’s a journey that will unlock a greater appreciation of the remarkable diversity of life on earth and what is at stake in this age of climate change and the extinction of so many species.

How did the tangled tree of life on earth get so mag-nificently gnarled? Allow OLLI and Dr. Furnish to tell the story.

The Woman Who Smashed CodesWednesday, February 10th 2:00 – 3:30 pmJason Fagone, author, journalist, editorFree for OLLI members / $5 for non-members

Mr. Fagone introduces us to Elizabeth Smith Fried-man, a 23-year-old schoolteacher from Indiana who became one of our government’s most effective secret weapons.

Friedman was a master code breaker and puzzle solver who used pencil and paper to catch gangsters during Prohibition and untangle the secret messages of enemies in both world wars.

Let OLLI and Mr. Fagone give you a closer look at this little known and unlikely heroine, who outwitted Amer-ica’s enemies and helped preserve our republic. It’s a fascinating human story and one worth our attention as citizens.

The Truth About Human Trafficking Wednesday, March 10th 2:00 – 3:30 pm Jane Anderson J.D., American University, Washington College of LawFree for OLLI members / $5 for non-members

Hidden in plain sight, victims of human trafficking are visible around us but never identified as people sub-jected to exploitation as laborers or sex workers.

We often do not see them because we do not know what to look for. Ms. Anderson will show us how traf-fickers use force, fraud, and coercion to entrap for profit some of the most vulnerable people in our com-munities, and these oppressors often escape account-ability for their misdeeds.

Anderson’s experience as a prosecutor in human trafficking cases and as an expert on trafficking for the Department of Justice, the State Department, and scores of human trafficking task forces around the country give her deep insights into this nefarious trad-ing in human lives. Allow OLLI and Ms. Anderson to share them with you.

History and Science of Sexual JusticeWednesday, April 14th 2:00 – 3:30 pmMaria Nieto, PhD, Professor Emerita of Biological Sci-ences, CSUEBFree for OLLI members / $5 for non-membersDr. Maria Nieto is co-author of The Spectrum of Sex: The Science of Male, Female, and Intersex, a book that breaks down current understandings of sex and gender diversity and offers new, scientifically based ways of looking at them.

It challenges, in particular, the myth that sex and gender are exclusively binary. While not everyone accepts this scientifically grounded premise, Dr. Nieto works to create a safe environment, built on well-grounded science, for frank and open discus-sion about how best to accommodate the diversity of human sex traits and the gender identies in society. OLLI and Dr. Nieto hope you’ll take part in the conver-sation.

Modernism: Artistic Rebellion in the Last Century Thurs., Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28, Feb. 4 & 11, 10:30 am – 12:30 pmJannie M. Dresser, M.F.A., English and creative writing, Mills College$72 for OLLI members / $108 for non-members

The Modernist movement is well over 100 years old. It radically changed art and literature, turning upside down previous cultural understandings of society and our place in it. Modernism challenged traditional forms and embraced experimentation, daring to upset both viewers of art and readers. Ms. Dresser will examine the roots and branches of Modernism, including its response to industrial-ism, consumerism, the new science of “psychol-ogy”, and the impact of WWI. T.S. Elliot’s “The Wasteland”, as well as works by Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group, by James Joyce, and by other writers will get close attention as will some of the great Modernist visual arts works. It’s back to the beginnings of the future with OLLI and Ms. Dresser.

The Possibilities of the Human Spirit: Averroes, Maimonides and SpinozaMondays, Jan. 11,* 25, Feb., 1, 8 & 15 1:30 – 3:30 pm

(*Note – no class scheduled on Jan. 18th) Peretz Wolf-Prusan, MAHL 1988, Rabbinic Ordi-nation 1990, HUC$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-membersThe journey of this course begins with two sons of Cordova: Rambam (Maimonides) and Ibn Rushd (Averroes). These two 12th century philosophers profoundly influenced a thinker who came three centuries later. His name is Baruch De Spinoza. Spinoza is a philosopher whose thought still provokes and inspires. David Ben-Gurion said Spinoza was “....the deepest, most original thinker to emerge from the end of the Bible to the birth of Einstein.” This trio of thinkers are the focus of Peretz Wolf-Prusan’s attention, and he will guide us through their explorations into the possibilities of the human spirit, the full range of our sentient capabilities. See if you agree with Ben-Gurion about Spinoza, and come test your own possibili-ties, a challenge we know you OLLIites are up to.

The Beatles: Post Pepper(Recorded for on-demand viewing)

Tuesdays, Jan. 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2 & 9 1:30 – 3:30 pmStephen Schultz, lecturer music history and flute, Carnegie Mellon Univ., director Carnegie Mellon Baroque Orchestra$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

The Beatles are the most famous rock group in history. The reasons for this are musical as well as cultural, and Professor Schultz will look at both elements as he surveys their output from Sgt. Pepper to Let It Be. The course will offer analy-sis of lyrics as well as music, look at the musical styles the Beatles experimented with, trace the influences of other music and musicians on their work, and note how their music changed over time. Then the big question: why were the Bea-tles so popular and influential? Participants will need access to Beatles music covered in class. Their albums stream on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify. Reading and YouTube video links will be provided to augment your learning. The Fab Four are in town again. Tune in!

The Genocide in California’s ClosetThurs., Jan. 14, 21, 28, Feb 4, 11 & 18 1:30 – 3:30 pmRobert A. McNally, M.A. political science, poet, journalist, editor$72 for OLLI members/ $108 for non-members

Californians are generally unaware that in the 19th century their state sought to exterminate its indigenous population, an atrocity known under contemporary international law as genocide. This course explores what happened in California as this horrendous process unfolded between 1846 and 1900, and connects California’s story with the broader narrative of the United States conquest in the west. It also shows how the geno-cide continues to affect California society, culture, and politics. Allow Robert McNally to guide us as we are called to examine and struggle with our history. It’s a reckoning we need to take.

The Short StoryWeds. Jan. 20, 27, Feb 3, 10 & 17 10:30 am – 12:30 pmMarianna Matthews, M.A., English, CSUEB,lecturer in English, Chabot College$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

Think the short story is only found in first-year English courses or the pages of the New Yorker? Not so. Ms. Matthews invites you to indulge your love of reading without the, sometimes, over-whelming book club obligation of a full volume each session. You’ll explore classic literary elements like set-ting, character, conflict, and symbolism to hone your appreciation of how authors create memora-ble short fictions. Ms. Matthews will also provide brief biographical sketches of the authors and describe the contexts in which they wrote. She’ll lead discussions focusing on one story per meet-ing, beginning with, Willa Cather’s “A Death in the Desert” from the Oxford Book of American Short Stories. It’s time to take a “short cut” and deepen your love of reading with Ms. Matthews and OLLI.

The Changing Nature of Nature PoetryThurs., Jan 28, Feb. 4, 11, 18 & 25, 1:30 – 3:30 pmLaura Bernell, M.A. literature, Santa Clara Uni-versity$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

Poems about nature have enduring appeal in the United States. It begins with romanticized odes to the world around us in the manner of Wordsworth and Keats. But now poets address nature in more realistic and questioning ways. Is humankind a part of nature or apart from it? Are we nature’s stewards or must nature become victim to our needs? Is a peaceable balance be-tween untouched nature and our needs, both real and imagined? Ms. Bernell thinks the best way to address such questions is to hear what the poets have to say. So prepare for looks at nature ranging from Thoreau and Whitman to Frost, Ackerman, Berry, Strafford, and many more. The subject is challenging, the poems enchanting. Come join the quest for answers.

Keeping a Spiritual Journal Thurs., Feb. 18, 25 Mar. 4, 11 & 18 10:30 am – 12:30 pmJannie M. Dresser, M.F.A., English and creative writing, Mills College$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members Whether you are new to the practice or continu-ing with Ms. Dresser, this course will remind you that journal keeping is as old as writing itself. It can be a fitful thing, started then abandoned, only to be taken up again--or not. Just what does it mean to keep a record of one’s inner life, of one’s ways, days, and meditations on the mean-ing of things? Allow Ms. Dresser to introduce you to the journal keeping of some notable spiritual teachers and to the genre’s techniques. But the core of the course is about how journals can help us track the trajectory of our own lives, cope with challenges, and enhance the search for deep meaning. Let OLLI and Ms. Dresser remind you of the challenges and rewards of a very personal kind of writing that takes you into the heart of yourself.

Awake Your Faith: Shakespeare’s RomancesMondays, Feb 22, Mar. 1, 8, 15 & 22 1:30-3:30 pmJulian Lopez-Morillas, M.F.A. Directing, Carnegie-Mellon University

$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

Join actor and director Julian Lopez-Morillas for a study of Shakespeare’s final four plays---Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest. These masterpieces show Shakespeare at the height of his creativity and reveal his maturity not just as a dramatist but as a husband and father. Known collectively as “the Romances”, these four plays marked the invention of a new genre of tragicomedy, and they explore themes of for-giveness and reconciliation set in atmospheres of wonder. Here’s an opportunity to delve into works of uncommon beauty. Mr. Lopez-Morillas will enhance the adventure with his own readings and enactments of scenes from these magical creations.

A Multicultural View of American ArtTues. Feb. 23, Mar. 2, 9, & 16, 10:30 am – 12:30 pmAvril Angevine, M.A. Comparative. Lit., UCB$48 for OLLI members / $72 for non-members

African-American, Asian-American, Latinx, and Native American artists are producing literature, visual arts, and films. Ms. Angevine will focus on this creative out-put with emphasis on cutting edge art and the contexts in which it is formed. Three key questions intrigue her. Do the works identify themselves as minority produced? Should who created the art and for whom be taken into account when assessing it? And, should we even ask questions like these? Ah, that third question! A lot is up for discussion regarding minority cultures these days, and that certainly includes the art they are producing. Here’s a chance to take a look at 21st century multi-cultural art in the U.S. and the questions such creative work pose for us all. Seize it!

The Eclipse of a Global OrderWeds., Feb. 24, Mar. 3, 10, 17 & 24 10:30 am – 12:30 pm Alex M. Saragoza, Ph.D., professor emeritus of Ethnic Studies, UCB$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

What happens when a global order is eclipsed? The 20th century gives us two classic cases of such eclips-es: the global order that came undone after WWI and the order built in the wake of WWII, still in the process of unraveling. A close look at the history of both tidal shifts can give us insight into the tensions plaguing us today. Dr. Saragosa offers ways to understand why, for example, Iran shows such hostility toward the “west” and the U.S., in particular, why the old Cold War still resonates in Guatemala and other northern triangle countries in Central America, and why Palestine and Israel can’t resolve their conflicts. These are just a few of the case histories he has on the agenda. His wide-ranging survey of the consequences these two epic eclipses have unleashed can help us understand the world around us today. It is indeed worth a closer look.

Gold, Not Just Gilded: The Life and Works of Edith WhartonMondays, Mar. 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29 10:30 am – 12:30 pmSusan Fox, Ph.D., English literature, UCD $60 for OLLI members / $90 for non-members

Not many writers were as much a voice of and for their time as was Edith Wharton, a woman whose work and life were pure gold despite growing to maturity in an age we call Gilded.

Wharton won the Pulitzer Prize for The Age of Inno-cence in 1921, the first woman to win that award. She produced a variety of writings we still admire, their al-lure and potency unallayed.

She was a master novelist, short-story writer, poet, essayist, and even a frontline journalist in WWI. All that and we haven’t yet mentioned her travelogues and ghost stories. When she put pen to paper, the results were potent and provocative. Join OLLI and Ms. Fox for an experience more than gilded, it will be truly golden.

Note: Students are encouraged to read The Age of Innocence as the course progresses. But be assured: the instructor will review the novel thoroughly and read-ing it is entirely your option.

COURSES“Fake News”, Social Media, and the Re-shaping of American PoliticsThurs., March 4, 11, 18, & 25 1:30 – 3:30 pmMarc Sandalow, Associate Academic DirectorUCB Washington Program, journalist, author & teacher$48 for OLLI members / $72 for non-membersAnyone who follows news has witnessed the transfor-mation. Social media and the Internet have rendered newspapers obsolete. Cries of “fake news”, bias and sensationalism have tainted an industry that prided itself on objectivity. The rise of reality TV and the 24-hour news cycle have forever changed a vital institution. This course, taught by veteran journalist Marc Sandalow, will examine the root of the media’s evolution and its path forward. Combining lectures, current events, and discussion, Sandalow – who has spent the past three decades covering Washington D.C. and the Bay Area -- will challenge assumptions about the media’s role and competency. Is the public ignorant because the news media is shallow, or is the news media shallow because the public is ignorant? OLLI and Mr. Sanadlow can help you find out.

Lowell and Bishop Tuesdays, Mar. 9, 16, 23, 30 & Apr. 6 1:30 - 3:30 pm David Alpaugh, M.A., English, UCB, writer, poet, drama-tist, editor$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

The platonic but deeply felt relationship between these two creative poets was dramatized recently in Sarah Ruhl’s play, “Dear Elizabeth.” Her confessional “Cal” and reticent “Elizabeth” sometimes seem a literary odd couple. They led such different lives and developed unique aesthetic tastes.Mr. Alpaugh, a poet himself, will show us how these two great poets, despite their differ-ences, shared a common passion for life and a belief that only poetry could capture it at its height. As Bishop herself put it: “Since we do float on an unknown sea, I think we should examine the other floating things that come our way carefully; who knows what may depend on it?” An astute observation. Let Mr. Alpaugh and OLLI float some interesting things your way.

Writing CritiqueTuesdays, Mar. 23, 30 & Apr. 6, 13 & 20 10:30 am – 12:30 pmAline Soules, M.A. in English, M.F.A. Creative Writing, M.S.L.S, librarian, CSUEB$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

“I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.” ― Joan Didion If you have something to say through the written word, whether in the form of poetry, memoir, fiction, or non-fiction, join us. Ms. Soules, the author of Evening Sun: A Widow’s Journey and Meditation on Women, will get you started and help you find your voice. You will prepare short written pieces before and between classes; and you will prepare feedback for others and receive feedback on your work to help improve your work. Critiques will include elements of craft as they arise. Here’s a chance to pursue the joy of telling your stories in a positive and encouraging setting.

The Dreyfus Affair and its Impact on Modern France: 1894-1940Mondays, Mar. 29, Apr. 5, 12, 19 & 26 10:30 am – 12:30 pmLarry Prud’homme, Ph.D., modern French history, UCD$60 for OLLI members / $90 for non-members

Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a young French artillery officer, was convicted of espionage and treason in 1894 and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island for al-legedly passing military secrets to the Germans. De-spite discovery of evidence proving his innocence, the French army refused Dreyfus a new trial for five years. When his case was reopened in 1900, he was again convicted. Prud’homme will unravel the nasty web of anti-Semitism, army politics, and cultural warfare that delayed justice, a pardon and finally a full exoneration in 1906. The notorious “Dreyfus Affair” still brings to mind the agony that suppression of evidence and wrongful prosecution can inflict. The “Other” Renaissance: Northern Europe, Part II 15th-16th century Mondays, Mar. 29, Apr. 5, 12, 19, & 26 1:30 – 3:30 pmKen Alexander, MFA, art history and humanities instructor, Los Medanos College$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

The Renaissance: Italy, Michelangelo, Leon-ardo and Raphael? Yes, yes, yes, and of course. End of story? Well, how about the North of Europe, marching to its own drum-mer in these tumultuous times, affecting and being affected by events in Italy but playing it all out in unique ways.

Mr. Alexander will introduce you to the politi-cal “movers and shakers” of the north in the era: kings of France dreaming of conquest in Italy; kings of England who wanted France; and Dukes of Burgundy, who played all against all in search of power. Then there were the remarkable artists who depicted this whirling world. Out of chaos came the masterpieces of Van Eyck, Bosch, Holbein, Durer and many others.

The North may have been colder, but no less creative! Let Mr. Alexander and OLLI show you just how in this second of a two-part series.

The Litvaks: A History of the Jews of LithuaniaTues., Mar. 30, Apr. 6, 13, 20 & 27 10:30 am – 12:30 pmKen Blady, M.A., Educational Psychology, CSUEB, lecturer in history$60 for OLLI members/ $90 for non-members

Mr. Blady presents an overview of the histo-ry and contemporary status of Jewish com-munities in South Africa.

Jewish migrants and their descendants con-tributed in important ways to the area as far back as the 17th century with their involve-ment in the Dutch East Indies Company.

Jewish presence expanded in the later 19th century with the arrival of the Litvak, or Lithuanian Jewish diaspora.

The Boer War tested and shaped their South African loyalties, which led to walking a tightrope regarding the apartheid system that followed.

As you would expect, this complex history shapes the lives of Jews presently living in South Africa. Here’s another intriguing chapter in the history of the Diaspora from Mr. Blady.

$36 for OLLI members/ $54 for non-members

Mr. Jordan takes us on a guided tour of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic adventure to the Antarctic in 1914.

Shackleton and his crew of 27 boarded the Endurance (apt name) and headed off to make a land crossing of Antarctica. It was not to be. They found themselves trapped in the permanent pack ice of the Weddell Sea, where their ship was slowly crushed.

They survived on ice floes, then were stranded on an island. From there, Shack-elton and five others made one of the most incredible open-boat journeys of all time, crossing the uncharted interior of South Georgia Island, ultimately reaching a whal-ing outpost.

Once there they were able to return and rescue other crew members. It’s time for an expedition with OLLI and Mr. Jordan. Winter gear optional.

The Beatles: Magical Mystery TourTuesday, January 19th 2:00 – 3:30 pmStephen Schultz, lecturer music history and flute, Carnegie Mellon Univ., director Carnegie Mellon Baroque Orchestra

Free for OLLI members and Lake Park residents$5 for non-members

By June of 1967, the Beatles had made plans to make a film for T.V., basically an all Paul idea. It would be a “magic” bus trip around England, written, filmed, and edited by the Beatles. Most of the shooting took place in September, and recording the music ate up 11 weeks. The film was a disaster. It suffered from weak script, embarrassingly bad acting, and poor produc-tion values. But the album Capitol released on November 27 was another matter. It included Paul’s gorgeous “Fool on the Hill”, George’s captivating “Blue Jay Way”, and John’s tour de force masterpiece of organized chaos “I am the Walrus.” So it was from the depths to the heights in 1967. Climb aboard the bus with OLLI and Professor Schultz to take a magical tour of a very magical year.

The Human GenomeTuesday, February 16th 2:00 – 3:30 pmJoseph Furnish, Ph.D., retired Aquatic Ecologist, U.S. Forest Service

Free for OLLI members and Lake Park residents$5 for non-members

The story of the evolution of life on earth is remarkable for its richness and beauty. But this fascinating story cannot be fully understood with-out placing it in the context of molecular biology and recent revelations about the human genome and horizontal gene transfer. How did the tangled tree of life on earth get so magnificently gnarled? Allow OLLI and Dr. Fur-nish to tell the story.

The Truth About Human Trafficking Tuesday, March 16th 2:00 – 3:30 pm Jane Anderson J.D., American University, Wash-ington College of Law

Free for OLLI members and Lake Park residents$5 for non-members

Hidden in plain sight, victims of human traffick-ing are visible around us but never identified as people subjected to exploitation as labor-ers or sex workers. We often do not see them because we do not know what to look for. Ms. Anderson will show us how traffickers use force, fraud, and coercion to entrap for profit some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, and these oppressors often escape accountabil-ity for their misdeeds. Anderson’s experience as a prosecutor in human trafficking cases and as an expert on trafficking for the Department of Justice, the State Department, and scores of human trafficking task forces around the country give her deep insights into this nefarious trading in human lives. Allow OLLI and Ms. Anderson to share them with you.

Role of the Military in American Society Tuesday, April 20th 2:00 – 3:30 pmDr. Michael Baker, MD, FACS, Rear Admiral, Medical Corps, USN (ret)

Free for OLLI members and Lake Park residents$5 for non-members

The military has recently, and controversially, been called into service in American cities during social protests. Some view this as a violation of the Constitution and an abuse of power. What does the law say and what is an appropriate use of the military in American Society? The US mili-tary was exemplified by the “citizen soldier” who answered the call to defend the country. The draft gave way to the All Volunteer Force, which has become separated from society at large. We will take a look at the Insurrection Act, the Posse Comitatus Act, and the Bonus March on Washington. We will discuss whether to resume the draft, other options for public service, and why everyone needs to “have skin in the game.” Dr. Baker offers his expertise and explains some of the options to us. You will be glad you joined us for this opportunity.

Franz Liszt: Rock Star Monday, February 8th 1:30 – 3:00 pmJohn Kendall Bailey, music director, conductor, chorus masterFree for OLLI members and Mastick residents$5 for non-members

Franz Liszt, one of the greatest virtuoso pianists, performed before crowds of adoring fans who fought over his handkerchiefs and broken piano strings to keep as souvenirs. This prompted the German poet, Heine to dub the term “Lisztomania” to describe the phenomenon. But Liszt gave it all up at age 35 to devote himself to composition. His personal life might still suit the tabloids, if they had existed. He considered entering the priesthood on several occasions, but also had affairs with two married noblewomen. All that aside, he contrib-uted to radically innovative harmony and invented the symphonic poem. Mr. Kendall Bailey introduc-es you to the life and work of this charismatic and influential musical genius.

Air quality has temporarily improved with fewer planes in the sky and cars on the road. This offers us a unique opportunity for clearer views of the night sky, and here’s a course designed to help us take advantage of them.

Dr. Berryhill will guide us into the vastness of the universe right from our own backyard, patio, or driveway. She’ll provide a simple but powerful tool for predicting when each phase of the moon is vis-ible and for when it’s not---the perfect time to look for meteors.

Allow OLLI and Dr. Berryhill to make your home sky gazing experience richer and more interesting. No special equipment is needed, but if you have your own telescope or binoculars put them to use. The air is clear, so seize the day---well, the clear nights!

San Francisco’s Bohemian spirit and culture of radi-cal acceptance made it a magnet for creativity. And that was certainly true for the Bay Area art scene in the 1950s and 60s. San Francisco was a hip and swinging place in mid-century, awash with new ideas about mu-sic, poetry, life, and love. It all spilled into an art scene in flux and produced artists and art styles that chal-lenged New York’s dominance of the nation’s art scene. Join Ms. Angevine and OLLI for a close look at the work of David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown, Jay DeFeo, and others of the remarkable cadre of artists whose vibrant and original creations graced the period and the region. Mr. Fagone introduces us to Elizabeth Smith Friedman, a 23-year-old schoolteacher from Indiana who became one of our government’s most effective secret weapons. Friedman was a master code breaker and puzzle solver who used pencil and paper to catch gangsters during Prohibition and untangle the secret messages of enemies in both world wars. Ms. Angevine will focus on this creative out-put with emphasis on cutting edge art and the contexts in which it is formed. Three key questions intrigue her. Do the works identify themselves as minority pro-duced? Should who created the art and for whom be taken into account when assessing it? And, should we even ask questions like these? Ah, that third question! A lot is up for discussion regarding minority cultures these days, and that certainly includes the art they are producing. Here’s a chance to take a look at 21st century multicultural art in the U.S. and the questions such creative work pose for us all. Seize it!

District Attorney Diana Becton, the Immediate Past President of the Association of Women Judges and current chair of the California State Bar Council on Access and Fairness, is an advocate for reform of our juvenile justice system.

Youth crime rates have dropped steadily in recent times and re-imagining our justice system so that young people have greater chances to lead success-ful and enriching lives is a pressing responsibility for us all. And it must be met while still safeguarding our communities from crime.

OLLI and the District Attorney will give you a close look at how the Reimagine Youth Task Force is wrestling with this daunting task. It’s an effort worth our atten-tion.

Dr. Maria Nieto is co-author of The Spectrum of Sex: The Science of Male, Female, and Intersex, a book that breaks down current understandings of sex and gender diversity and offers new, scientifically based ways of looking at them.

It challenges in particular the myth that sex and gender are exclusively binary. While not everyone accepts this scientifically grounded premise, Dr. Nieto works to create a safe environment, built on well-grounded sci-ence, for frank and open discussion about how best to accommodate the diversity of human sex traits and the gender identies in society. OLLI and Dr. Nieto hope you’ll take part in the conversation.

Marc Sandalow, Associate Academic DirectorUCB Washington Program, journalist, author and teacher

$48 for OLLI members / $72 for non-members

Anyone who follows news has witnessed the trans-formation. Social media and the Internet have ren-dered newspapers obsolete.
