TENERIFE ISLAND

Tenerife is the largest and most populous island of the seven Canary Islands it is also the most populated island of Spain, with a land area of 2,034.38 km² (785.47 mi²) and 908,555 inhabitants, 43% of the total population of the Canary Islands. Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is attempting to become a World Heritage Site. Tenerife is

serviced by two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport, and is the tourism and economic centre of the archipelago.Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and the seat of the island council (cabildo insular). The city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, until in 1927 a decree ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains as at present.San Cristóbal de La Laguna (a World Heritage Site) is the second city of the island and the third one of the archipelago. The city of La Laguna was also capital of the Canary Islands until Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833.Tenerife also has the highest elevation of Spain, a World Heritage Site that is the third largest volcano in the world from its base, El Teide. The island's capital contains the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands, the modern Auditorio de Tenerife. The archipelago is formed by seven main islands: El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma and Tenerife, which form the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; and Fuerteventura, Gran Canary and Lanzarote, which form the province of Las Palmas. The Canary Islands also takes in the insular territories of the Chinijo Archipelago (La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste) and the Isla de Lobos, all of which form a part of the province of Las Palmas. La Graciosa is the only island amongst the aforementioned that is inhabited. The Canary Islands’ location, 1000 kilometres to the south of the Iberian Peninsula, next to the Sahara, affords the Islands a unique climate, which is mild throughout the year, whereby the beaches can be enjoyed at any time. The Canary Islands number amongst the territories with the greatest degree of biodiversity on the planet, boasting a wide variety of landscapes: spectacular volcanoes and lava fields, luxuriant woods, magnificent beaches of various types, deep ravines, fertile valleys, impressive cliffs and clear waters that are teeming with life. Moreover, as a result of their modern port and airport infrastructures, the Canary Islands are in permanent communication with the five continents.

The economy of Tenerife, predominantly based on agriculture and trade until the 1970s, is now focused on the service industry – mainly tourism – which has promoted construction and services linked to tourism activity. Industry is scarce, representing about 7 or 8 % of GDP, mainly in agriculture and food sectors, tobacco, and oil refinery (at the oil refinery in Santa Cruz de Tenerife). With regard to the primary sector, only 10% of the surface area of the island is cultivated – mainly drier lands (vines and potatoes), with a small proportion of irrigated land (mostly dedicated to banana and tomato crops). Export agriculture is targeted at trade with national markets and the European Union. The island has also started to export other tropical fruits (avocado, pineapple, mango, and other greenhouse crops) and flowers. Livestock mainly comprises goats and cows and is scarce, having suffered a significant recession in recent decades.

Details of the visit:

Teide National Park is one of the great wonders of the world, with the advantage of being easy to get to and relatively close to European countries. The entire park is a unique geological treasure in which the volcanoes, craters, vents, lava flows and different materials, form an impressive array of shapes and colours. You will be surprised by the diversity of Las Cañadas del Teide, taken aback by its huge rivers of petrified lava and impressed by the eroded rocks and colossal dimensions of this mineral chaos. In contrast, in spring you will be delighted by the wonderful flowers and gentle aromas, unique in the world.Mount Teide dominates the landscape. This imposing volcanic edifice looks quite different depending on your exact location and the actual season. Its changing looks are a never-ceasing source of delight for onlookers. At its feet lies a sea of volcanic rocks that formed so recently that erosion has not had time to wear them away, and they offer a wide-ranging catalogue of volcanic forms and materials contained in the great amphitheatre defined by Las Cañadas escarpment. The wall surrounding it extends across 25 km, reaching heights of up to 600m in the area known as Guajara, its highest point. This natural cut affects what was a former volcanic edifice, which partly disappeared 198,000 years ago, when the current Las Cañadas depression was formed by a giant landslide that uncovered some of its roots in Los Roques area, revealing conduits and volcanic vents that fed past eruptions. In the cross section of the escarpment you can observe three million years of complex geological history in which the cycle repeated itself several times, with landslides and the formation of “a Teide”.The National Park, located in the centre of the island of Tenerife, is the largest and oldest of the four national parks on the Canary Islands. From its surface area of 190 Km2 (18,990 hectares), Mount Teide rises up to a height of 3,718 m, which makes it the highest peak in Spain. It was declared a National Park in 1954 and in 1989 it was awarded the top category of the European Diploma of Protected Areas. It has two visitor centres, one in Portillo and the other in the Parador Nacional Hotel. The centres are focused on nature and traditional uses of Las Cañadas, respectively. In 2007 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

We will continue this day with a tour of Villa de La Orotava visiting the main landmarks and attractions of the village from 14:00 to 17:00 hrs.
