2010 Reunion

For some reason there seems to be some confusion regarding

holding a Reunion Dinner in October 2010.

There WILL be a Reunion Dinner in 2010 on Saturday 9th October.

Details will be published in the Spring Newsletter in March. In the

meantime if you have any queries regarding this please contact the

Management Committee. The contact numbers are published in the

Newsletter.

Your Management Committee wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and

safe New Year.

Chairman‟s Report I place on record my thanks to all the members who attended the AGM, and all

the members and guests who supported the Reunion Dinner. Our Official Guests, like you, had a very enjoyable evening.

Those of you who attended the AGM and Reunion this year will know that as

from 1st February 2010 I will be stepping down as Chairman. I feel it is time for a new pair of hands to take the wheel. The following statement was made to the assembled members at the AGM:

“Gentlemen I have been considering for some time now whether I should continue as Chairman, I have done seven years, in the hot seat, but in total 12 years on the MC. and I think its time to step aside and let another pair of hands take the Association forward for the next few years.

With the help of both past and present very dedicated committee Members we

have taken this organisation further than I ever imagined. It has been a pleasure to serve with you and a marvellous experience.

I do believe it is time for Diane and I to have some time to ourselves. With your approval I would be delighted to carry on the work with the Imperial

War Museum, and build up all the stories that some of our members want told. I anticipate standing down on February 1st next year, which means I can tie up

any loose ends at the November Committee Meeting. I now pay tribute to all the past and present committee members that I have

had the pleasure of working with, for all their hard work and dedication over many years and during sometimes difficult times. However, until then there is still much to do with planning the arrangements for the Remembrance Services in London, Bristol, Stone and Gosport.”

Post Remembrance Day Comment.

I would like to thank the members who came from all parts of the Country and attended either or both of the two London parades. These were the Royal Naval Association‟s biennial parade in September and the Royal British Legion‟s Remembrance Day in November. Association Wreaths were laid by Windy Gale and Geoff Rose respectively. Both were very successful days. My thanks also go to Andy Poulton for organising the Bristol parade and to Tony Dewhirst for carrying our National Standard there. Thanks also to Hooky Walker for parading our National Standard in Gosport, accompanied by Ernie Smith who laid a Wreath on behalf of us all. The Mayor of Stone laid the Association Wreath on our behalf at the Civic Service in Stone.

Backward Swimmers Picture.

You will all recall that one of our members, Nigel Buckland from the Isle of Wight, donated the picture entitled 'Backward Swimmers' for the Raffle in 2008. It was decided at the time that it would raise more money being auctioned separately. This was duly done and thanks to the generosity of Gary Goodwin, the sum of £200 was raised.

Gary returned the picture this year to be re-auctioned and the Executive Officer of HMS Collingwood, and his wife, Commander & Mrs Alun Watts, paid

Page 4: WINTER Edition 2009 No - HMS St Vincent Association · 2 HMS St Vincent Association 14th Annual General Meeting Saturday 9th October 2010 at 1100 The next Annual General Meeting of

4

£250 for the picture, they both stated that it would be returned next year to be auctioned again. This sum boosted the income to the Association funds by the magnificent amount of £850 (£600 proceeds from the Raffle and the £250 for the picture).

Once again our grateful thanks go to Nigel Buckland for his generosity in the

first place.

With thanks and best wishes to you all, Malcolm

Malcolm R. Smith BEM (Blake 226, 5/59) - Chairman

Report from the AGM & Reunion Dinner Organiser

I wish to thank you all very much for all your help and support over the last 7

years that I have been organising this most important event in the Annual Calendar of this Association. I have enjoyed it immensely and will miss the banter between us. *Due to good housekeeping I have managed to accrue a small amount of money which I will pass over to the Association as a donation.

Kind Regards, Diane

Diane D. Smith

(Ed‟s Note) *This “small amount” totalled £444:47p! Diane stated that she had great pleasure in handing over to the Association a cheque for the sum of this amount and that the relevant bank account had now been closed. On behalf of the members, thank you Diane for a difficult job done very well over many years – we will miss you. Unclaimed Raffle Prizes.

The following prizes are still unclaimed:

Pale Green Ticket No 287 Serial Number AB 215181 " Models of Hood and Bismarck and the FIRST PRIZE “A Four Ball Golf day at Lee on the Solent Golf Course” .Pale Green Ticket No. 26 Serial Number AD 286392.

The „Secretary‟s Table‟

Here we are with another Newsletter about to be published and it seems a short time ago that we were all together at our reunion. From my conversations with many of you, everyone had a most memorable evening. It was good to see you all again and thank you all for a large turnout. You all did yourselves proud.

Whilst we are on this particular subject, I wish to dispel any notion that the

recent AGM/Reunion was the last one. I don‟t know where that „buzz‟ came from but I can assure you all that there will be a Reunion Dinner next year. In fact the

Page 5: WINTER Edition 2009 No - HMS St Vincent Association · 2 HMS St Vincent Association 14th Annual General Meeting Saturday 9th October 2010 at 1100 The next Annual General Meeting of

Thorngate Hall is already booked. We have received some good ideas/options from members, all of which have been well received and there are further discussions to come all of which I hope will assist us to move forward. However there is still no volunteer(s) as yet to fill what is now a vacant Committee Post. As I mentioned in the last Newsletter, we have discussed alternative arrangements at AGM‟s in the past which included the possibility of a change of venue. The greater majority of you wanted the AGM to be held at St. Vincent (the venue which by the way costs the Association nothing) then the Reunion dinner would remain at the Thorngate or at a location in the Gosport Fareham area. (The Royal Maritime Club [Home Club] in Portsmouth was also suggested at that time but again the consensus was too much to-ing and fro-ing across the harbour.) The „Volunteer‟ will be made most welcome to the committee, moreover Diane has generously offered to make the necessary introductions to the incoming AGM/Reunion Organiser and „show them the ropes‟ plus the Committee is on hand at all times to provide a full back up and assist where necessary. So there is no need for our volunteer to feel they are walking into the job „blind‟, all the help needed will be on hand. So a plea from me, please can we have a volunteer …………….Your Association Needs YOU!!

I do thank you all for your support at the AGM for the open discussion

regarding the raising of the subs to £12.50.It was a „ticklish‟ subject to engage you with and you all reacted superbly which was much appreciated.

We now have the wherewithal to expand the size of the Association website

and this will begin to progress in the New Year. Our silent „back room boy‟ (Webmaster) is Roger Lyon and I think that we all owe Roger a big thank you for his sterling work. The website has become more and more utilised by not only us but many from around the globe which is pleasing. It is out intention to make a larger selection of photos available to you all (the mechanics of which have yet to be worked out fully) and run some different features.

Signing off, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy

2010. Take care.

Members on the Books

We have 679 members listed, consisting of the following: Full Members: 593 Honorary Members: 11 Associate Members: 7 New Members: Since the last report 3 new members have joined

Crossed the Bar

Three members have Crossed the Bar since the last report:

David Fiander Duncan 21 30 September 2009 Joined 10/51 Terence Salter Blake 473 26 October 2009 Joined 2/62 Alan Bunch Anson 17 1 November 2009 Joined 1/47 Late Payers

This still needs investigation and discussion. I‟ve been cross-checking bank

statements against the standing order payment dates for last year and a large number (32) are missing for this year. Cheques I can understand being late or going astray, but not standing orders. Could this be an HSBC cock-up? Unfortunately I will not be in a position to sort the problem for a while as I am working away from home (in Bristol). See „Standing Orders‟ later in my report.

Membership Lists

The lists will be provided on receipt of a self-addressed A4 envelope with separate stamps (i.e. not stuck down) to the value of £1. Apply to:

Keep Us Posted

If you hear of a shipmate‟s change of circumstances – an extreme example being a member Crossing the Bar – and suspect that the Committee may not have been informed, would you please contact the Membership Secretary with details. As you will appreciate, it‟s rather embarrassing when chasing unpaid subs to find that the „offender‟ has already gone to a better place!

Please also bear in mind that any members over the age of 90 years are entitled to become Life Members of the Association.

Subscriptions

Due to the cost of postage, we are trying to keep postal reminders down to a minimum. Please keep a weather eye open for your subs due date, or alternatively, set up a standing order with your bank - forms available from the Me.

Standing Orders

Possible errors made by our bank have resulted in some Standing Orders not being paid. To assist in our endeavours to correct this situation would members please check that their Standing Order has been correctly deducted during 2009.

Padre‟s Preamble

Looking back, looking now, and looking forward.

It does not seem possible in many ways that it is now over a year ago that Dai

crossed the bar and I started to be involved with the Association and was then appointed as your Padre. Our perception of time depends very much on where we are and what we are doing.

It was a great privilege to meet so many of you at the AGM and Reunion this year. Listening to you talking with one another, it was almost as if the conversations had not stopped since you were „boys‟ – the years in between had faded away. Yet you were very aware of the changes that the years have made, in yourselves, others and in the buildings and „St Vincent‟.

My involvement with „St Vincent‟ stretches back more than thirty five years to when the local education authority was taking over the site and facilities, so like you I have lived through the many changes that have happened.

My connection with the college continues now as one of the chaplaincy team there; spending time there at least once a week. The constant link through all those years from your time there until today is the aims „shaping and changing of young people‟s lives and preparing them for the future‟. The young people are keen to know of the past, especially those using the „original‟ buildings – I am sure that they still hold many memories for you.

The AGM and Reunion are very much times of looking back and bringing each other and the Association up to date and of looking to the future. The Association faces a number of challenges and changes; all of which I am sure will be faced with determination.

Thank you once again for the privilege of becoming your Padre and I, like you all, look forward to the future.

May God richly bless you this Christmastide and in the New Year to come. Phil Hiscock

Is there anybody out there? If so please submit articles for the newsletter to me at the address shown below. I reiterate that your stories, no matter how boring to you (!), ARE of interest to the readers so please do not hesitate to send them in. Thank you to the few of you that have taken the trouble to write to me, even if it is just to say you are enjoying the newsletters. To those very few gallant souls who have sent me articles and photos, rest assured that if it is not in this particular issue, it will be in a subsequent one unless, of course, it is considered unsuitable. I remind you that if your submission is not original please ensure that it is free from copyright. Geoff Rose, your conscientious Membership Secretary, although in full time employment and working away from home, still manages to find time to give me technical advice and assistance. Cheers Geoff. If readers have noticed

the inferior quality of this edition it is because Geoff is AWL (absent with leave!) on his hols at the time of going to press and therefore unavailable to lend his expert technical knowledge and experience.

Included in this issue is a “Flyer” advertising the DVD that 3 members

(included me doing the cinematography – whatever that is!) have put together over the last few months. It was hard work but great fun. Each purchase will result in a donation to the Association funds and perhaps, in one far distant day, the producers getting some of their investment back!

My wife and I are just off on holiday hence this Newsletter is a couple of weeks

earlier than normal. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all shipmates and their families a very happy Christmas and don‟t forget to find time to send me some printable articles – preferable by E mail or good quality type. Cheers.

Did you Know?

That the clock that is erected over the main gate of St. Vincent has an interesting history, read on:-

In Portsmouth, in the early 1800s, the Royal Marines were expanding fast and it became necessary for them to move from Clarence Barracks, which had been their home since 1765. Accordingly the Boards of Admiralty and Ordnance agreed to a “swop” and the Red Marines – as the Royal Marine Light Infantry was known - moved over to Forton at Gosport in 1848. It is said that the last unit to leave Clarence Barracks decided to take a souvenir over the water with them. The clock was smuggled across and eventually erected over the Main Gate where it still gives us the accurate time of day. The story led to a Royal Marine tradition – “the last one out takes the clock”

HMS ROYAL OAK

At the AGM on 10th October, A member mentioned the Royal Oak commemoration at

Southsea. In reply I explained that it is no longer held at that venue. As it is more than

likely that not everyone was able to hear me, this is what I said:-

“Every year on the 14th October a ceremony takes place at Scapa Flow, Orkney. Also the

Association hold a church service in Portsmouth a few days before. For the last three

years this has taken place at HMS Excellent, Whale Island. Although not a member I

had the privilege and honour of piping the Still and Carry-on for the Silence. There were

about 130 members and relatives at the service in St Barbara’s Church. It was a very

moving occasion. After the service, we all enjoyed a large buffet in the old GI’s mess.

Sadly only 4 survivors were present. The others were mostly related to the 834 men who

lost their lives. Many had never known their fathers, grandfathers or uncles. I am a

former shipmate of the Secretary Ken Toop from Basingstoke, I spent two and a half

years with him aboard HMS Ceylon in the Far East and Korea 1950-52. The

Portsmouth ceremony was on Saturday 3rd October. The next day 86 year old Ken and

his wife set out in their car for the annual trip to the north of Scotland, then the Orkney

Isles. Ken Toop was a St. Vincent boy, his first ship HMS Royal Oak had 120 boys

aboard”

(Ed‟s Note: Many thanks John. The total number of Boys lost on HMS

Royal Oak and HMS Hood is a very sobering thought.

From Terry Gillen Hawke 113 11/1947

Dear Ed,

I have just re read (more in depth) our last magazine which I have to say

was one of the best and funniest ever (Ed: Not so much a Newsletter as a Comic

eh?!) However I must say that I have a little complaint as on Page 13 you

mention some Far East incidents and how boys from 3 St Vincent classes were

there, but, you did not give a word to the fact that that some of us from Hawke

113 were also there. (Ed: Terry, I only type and print it, I do not actually write

most of it!)

We took passage on HMS BELFAST in October 1948 arriving in Hong

Kong on 14th December and transferred to HMS ALACRITY before sailing on

our patrol at Nanking up the Yangtze. We left Nanking, having been relieved by

Page 14: WINTER Edition 2009 No - HMS St Vincent Association · 2 HMS St Vincent Association 14th Annual General Meeting Saturday 9th October 2010 at 1100 The next Annual General Meeting of

14

HMS CONSTANCE on New Year’s Eve, arriving at Shanghai on New Year’s

Day 1949.

After getting back to Hong Kong we went into dry dock and all the boys

were sent to Stonecutters Island in the middle of the harbour where, under

Marine Instructors, we were knocked into a fair physical condition. On return we

sailed for Singapore and patrolled the west coast of Malaya where there were

difficult times going on. All the ships company received the Malayan medal. So

you see I believe Hawke 113 deserved a mention as indeed did our friendly

opponents!

The story behind friendly opponents is that while at HMS St. Vincent they

won the football cup as we had been knocked out by Anson 110 and we claimed

to be the best in Hawke, it became a little bitter so much so that our instructors

arranged a game which we won 4-1 and all bitter rivalry ended.

Thank you for reading this but I thought my class was great and deserved

a mention.

There are many stories from that time and pieces in the Magazine do jog

the memory. I hope you keep it going. Cheers, Terry.

(Ed again: Thank you Terry, as an ex Hawke boy I have no option but to reiterate our Division‟s superiority over all others throughout the whole 40 odd years of HMS St. Vincent‟s existence! The Newsletter will survive as

long as the articles, such as yours, keep being written.)

Did you Know?

Our very own Aggie Weston had a major part to play in the reason Portsmouth is called “Pompey”? Neither did I until now! Thanks to Elsie Steele for sending in the following information, which was extracted from a reader‟s letter to a local newspaper:-

In 1904 Miss Agnes Weston, the founder of the Sailors‟ Rest, told the story of the Roman Commander Pompey the Great and how, after the battle of Pharsalia in 48BC, he was treacherously murdered. One of the audience of matelots, moved to compassion, cried out “Poor old Pompey”, others in the audience then repeated the words. A few days later, many of those same matelots were at a football match at Fratton Park when the Portsmouth goalkeeper fell to the ground in a brave effort to stop the ball. One of the sailors cried out “Poor old Pompey” and many others took up the cry. Thus it came about that Portsmouth is known in the Royal Navy and the world beyond, as “Pompey”!

You heard it here first!

Competition - HMS St Vincent Connection

I had half a dozen answers to this one and they were all correct. Shirley Eaton (now aged 73 years), Film star of movies including James Bond‟s “Goldfinger” and various of the “Carry on” series, was the lady in question and the connection was that her father Captain Eaton, was HMS St Vincent‟s Commanding Officer from 1945 -1947 when she was a young girl. The story does not end here though because, according to her fan club Secretary, this is a case of mistaken identity as her father was an Army Officer! Does anyone out there know different? My research continues!

“ALL THE NICE GIRLS LOVE A SAILOR”

During the recent Remembrance Day Parade march past there was a

spontaneous outburst of singing from some of the units/regiments on parade. I hasten to add that this was after we had departed from Whitehall and left all the formalities behind. Your representatives, not to be outdone, decided to strike up with “All the nice girls love a sailor!” It was obviously well received by the spectators, judging by the increased volume of their applause as we passed by but, alas, the final two lines of the main chorus (I did not know there were also two other verses!) “He falls in love with Kate and Jane etc” fell into chaos because of the numerous other versions being sung! In the interests of an improved rendition next year, I am printing the full version below but I suggest we stick to the main chorus only!

PS. It has been suggested that we wear Jack Tar round hats with HMS St Vincent Cap Tallies next year. These could be provided. What do you think??

“Ship Ahoy” or “All the Nice Girls love a Sailor” Written in 1909

When the man o’ war or merchant ship comes sailing into port The jolly tar with joy, will sing out, Land Ahoy!

With his pockets full of money and a parrot in a cage He smiles at all the pretty girls upon the landing stage......

All the nice girls love a sailor

All the nice girls love a tar For there’s something about a sailor

(Well you know what sailors are!) Bright and Breezy, free and easy

He’s the ladies pride and joy! He falls in love with Kate and Jane, then he’s off to sea again

Ship ahoy! Ship ahoy!

He will spend his money freely and he’s generous to his pals, While Jack has got a Sou, there’s half of it for you,

And it’s just the same in love and war, he goes through with a smile, And you can trust a sailor, he’s a white man(i.e.honest) all the while!

Those intending to march next year have 11 months to learn this

chorus! No excuses! “Silence at the back, alright, get your „at lad”

On a seasonal note:-

Warning!

Do not read the following if you are somewhat prude, Please heed my warning that it is a little crude.

However for those of our readers who have served in a HM Ship I hope you will understand the humour in this little quip. (Ed.)

CHRISTMAS DAY IN HASLAR It was Christmas Day in Haslar, the whitewashed halls were hung with merry festive greetings, all the carols had been sung. When Matron came to the Men's Ward door, and in a voice so clear she announced a Royal visitor to bring them Christmas cheer. The Princess stepped into the room, her tiara on her head dispensing royal goodwill, as she moved from bed to bed. She asked each man his trouble, as she moved on through the halls till she came to the bed of the man who said, he had boils upon his balls. The Sick Bay Tiffies giggled, and the Matron's face went scarlet red, as she pulled Her Royal Highness away from that patient‟s bed. "Who gave him sherry trifle, and started off his frolics? When I get back I'll give him worse than boil's upon his bollocks." It was Christmas night in the wee small hours, and not a patient stirred when Matron came to the bed of the man, who had said that awful word.

Page 18: WINTER Edition 2009 No - HMS St Vincent Association · 2 HMS St Vincent Association 14th Annual General Meeting Saturday 9th October 2010 at 1100 The next Annual General Meeting of

She pulled the blankets off him, and then upon him she starts "How dare you tell a Royal Princess about your boily parts?" "If ever again in future we're visited by one of our Royal select and they ask you what your problem is, please show them some respect. Think about our reputation, and don't make of us a spectacle just say they're on your hands or knees, but never on your testicles." It was Christmas Day in the ward once more, and joy was in the air once more a Royal visitor, the Queen, herself, was there. Her Majesty walked down the ward, amidst the snap of Christmas crackers till she came to the bed of the man who said, he had boils upon his Knackers When she asked him what his trouble was, his face was full of woe then inspiration struck him, and he said "Boils upon my toes". "How very sad" the Queen replied, "How very sad Oh dear!" "They must have spread down from your balls, since my Sister came last year."

(Ed‟s note) Unfortunately the provider of this seasonal poem, Shipmate

Ernest Smith (ex Jossman) -9/46 wishes to remain anonymous so I have

no option but to comply with his request. As you can see, I have taken the

precaution of crossing out all offensive words.

(Ed‟‟s further note) Haslar closed earlier this year but members may be

interested to learn that the latest plans for its redevelopment include a

“Navy Village” with a wide range of facilities similar to those enjoyed by

the Army‟s “Chelsea Pensioners” in London. Watch this space...... Change of Subject!

Where Pussers Rum is now produced and consumed!

interesting career in the next edition, including more photos!
