Winter Education Camp Report

JIS group organized two weeks winter education camp at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand from 5th January to 16th January. This is the 2nd education camp organized by JIS group. First education camp organized from 22nd July to 3rd august 2013. Students were chosen from all engineering branches(Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer science and Engineering, Electrical engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) offered by JIS group 5 colleges (Narula Institute of Technology, Gurunanak Institute of Technology, JIS college of Engineering, Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Degree Engineering College, Abacus Institute of Technology) based on their merit. Entire expenditure is sponsored by JIS group.

Initially 35 students proposed to be send but 25 students finally board on the flight as rest of them could not manage to get their passport on time. Prof. Sajal Saha(Asst. Professor, Dept. of Computer Application, Narula Institute of Technology) and Prof. Baisakhi Das(Asst. Professor, Dept. of IT, Gurunanak institute of Technology) accompanied the students as faculty mentor. In this training students have been given exposure on various fields like 1. Students got a chance to interact with the scientist of NASA and come to know about NASA's next space program in the winter camp. Apart from this they got real time exposure on Nano Technology lab, GIS lab. In GIS lab; in a single day they learned the Quantum GIS software and made the GIS map of their respective colleges like NIT,GNIT,JISCE,DSCSDEC. These facts reflect the enthusiasm of our students. Maps are also attached in the report. They experienced field visit at Bangkok University, NSTDA (National Science and Technological Development Agency), National Science Museum, Bang Pa in palace(summer palace of the king of royal govt. of Thailand), Bang Sa in arts and crafts center, Ayutthaya(Ancients capital of Thailand), Bang pu. Moreover they enjoyed their weekend at the spectacular Marine Park and Safari World. At Bangkok University, they visited Opto Electronics lab led by Prof. Stacker and Prof. Poomphat and got the experience what are the cutting edge research works are going on in the field of Optoelectronics and Telecommunication. At NSTDA we come to know what are the current research works are going in various fields of science and technology in Thailand. Some of our students expressed interest to work for internship in the embedded system lab of NSTDA and they got the assurance and are advised to contact with the corresponding scientist at NSTDA with specific proposal of work. We also visited the incubation centre and learn the business model of incubation centre development. They got some unique experience through GPS treasure hunt and construction management through gaming and role play. On 14the January AIT president met our students and appreciated our student's performance in the winter camp as he got the feedback from the faculty members who have taken classes to our students. He also invites our students to come back again at AIT to pursue higher studies. We invited him to visit JIS group college campus and he assured us to come and visit our campus.

Last day students gave presentation in front of the AIT faculty members, Thereafter we organized a cultural program where vice president of AIT, Prof. Sivanappan Kumar, Course coordinator Prof. Nitn K Tripathy and other faculty members were present. Students showed their excellence and talent through Rabindrasangeet, Puppet show etc. to make the event extravagant. All the delegates present over there appreciate our student’s performance. Most of them could not understand the meaning of the rabindrasangeet but they got spellbound by the sweet melody and they were asking or the meaning of the song. It is to be noted that students had to rehearsed at the mid night after returning from the lab around 9pm most of the day to make the event successful. The cultural event followed by certificate distribution and dinner. Purpose of sending the student:

Education system in West Bengal is based mostly on text book based learning. They lack practical application to real life problem. Through this education camp students get 1. Global exposure: They get a chance to interact with the world renowned scientists and professors of NSTDA, NASA, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Agency), AIT, Bangkok Univerisity which will make our students up-to-date and industry ready. 2. Facing real life problem: They face some real life problem where they are asked to propose a solution through presentation. Students give presentation on the last day where they propose some solution to those problems. Professors of AIT give some suggestion on the proposal.

Through discussion and continuous learning process they realize without application of the knowledge, education is incomplete.
