Students are working to prepare for Florida Standards assessments, Advanced Placement testing, and Industry Certifications, and teachers are striving to adequately address course standards so that their students will be successful in demonstrating mastery. Although high stakes tests can be stressful for students, proper preparation will help ease the stress. Inside this newsletter, parents can find both the testing schedule for the remainder of the school year as well as the schedule of review sessions for end-of-course assessments. Advanced Placement (AP) teachers schedule their own review sessions at a variety of times, so if your child is enrolled in an AP course, make sure to ask about upcoming review sessions. Please know that while we hope all students will be successful on their assessments, we know that not all students will earn the scores they desire. What’s most important is that students prepare to the best of their ability and give their best effort during testing sessions. Learning is a fluid process, and the purpose of assessment is to gauge what students know and can do at a specific moment in time and to determine gaps in learning that still need to be addressed. Because we understand that students don’t always meet their mark the first time around, we continue to remediate students and re-test them on critical assessments so that they have multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery. In the end, the Florida Standards Assessment in English/Language Arts and the Algebra I End-of-Course exam are the only two assessments where students must earn a proficient score in order to graduate from high school. In the case of both aforementioned tests, when students don’t earn a proficient score the first time around, we offer alternative assessments where students can earn a concordant score that will meet the graduation requirement. In other words, there are many paths to the ultimate goal of graduation, and we are here to support our students during every step of their individual paths. Related to the topic of students giving their best effort, I’d like to brag a little on the amazing accomplishments of so many of our students this school year. At every turn, our students are breaking previous school records in academic, athletic, and artistic accomplishments. I am reluctant to give specific examples because so many of our individual students and student groups have achieved beyond expectation, that I don’t have enough space in this newsletter to recognize everyone. I certainly wouldn’t want to leave anyone out. If you’d like to stay informed about school and student accomplishments, please plug into our social media outlets. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and you’ll receive daily updates about the great things happening at Winter Springs High. If you don’t subscribe to social media, then access our website to view our social media feeds and view school highlights as well as important announcements. Finally, I would like to congratulate all of our students, parents, and staff for putting in the work and making the commitment to secure another A grade for Winter Springs High School. We don’t earn an A grade without considerable effort from all stakeholders. Thank you for your continued support of our school and our community. By working together, we can secure a quality educational and extra-curricular experience for all of our students. Respectfully, Mickey Reynolds, Ed.D. Principal, Winter Springs High School

HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE The PTSA works hard for the benefit of the students, educators and parents at our school. The PTSA tries not to overwhelm students with too many fundraisers. Instead, we offer a few items and rely on donations. Our blanket sale was a great success! There are only a few left so make sure you get one before it is too late! Coupon books with valuable coupons from Winter Springs’s restaurants and businesses are also available. Both items sell for $20.00 each. If interested, please contact Kim McCloskey at [email protected].

Lori Loftis and Michele Smith are excited to serve as co- chairs of the Hospitality Committee next year! If you are interested in assisting with events or donating items, please email Lori Loftis at [email protected]. Our first event will be the Back to School breakfast in August. We will contact volunteers in July. Thank you in advance for your willingness to volunteer!

PTSA I cannot believe it, but it is that time already! Time to start thinking about prom, final exams and before long - winding down another year. Then some will plan the summer months with family vacations and others will prepare our graduates for their next chapter of life called College. However, before we say our goodbyes I wanted to take a few minutes and thank the many volunteers. Without you, PTSA couldn’t do half the things we do. The PTSA had been hard at work this school year with so many successes. The year kicked off with a welcome back breakfast for teachers and staff. If you would like to help with this next August, please let me know. We would love to have you.

The Food Pantry has stocked and supplied food for students throughout the year. These food items serve as a bridge for students between school and home, as a fill in when food runs short. We have also supplied them with backpacks as well. Food donations are ALWAYS needed and appreciated. All foods that are individually wrapped and are non-perishable. Examples would be: peanut butter, peanut butter crackers, fruit cups, granola bars, individual meals and macaroni and cheese that can be microwaved.

Bear Connections continues to be a successful program where mentors, paired with students, meet on a regular basis to discuss everything from school challenges to goal setting. We are always looking for mentors, dads, moms, grandparents, neighbor, all are welcome.

Another program we had started this school year was done on a monthly basis. We recognized teachers and students who go the extra mile to make their school a positive and productive place to learn. They were rewarded with small tokens whether it was a school cup or a lanyard or maybe even a small gift card to a local restaurant. Donations for this are always welcome and you can send them in marked PTSA Monthly Recognitions.

Two general PTSA assemblies were held where parents were invited to the school for informational presentations. We will try to continue this next school year as well so if there is a subject you would like to be covered, please, just let me know. A great project that the students really like is during the colder weather, the PTSA set up a Hot Cocoa and Donuts stand on Friday mornings. Student PTSA card holders received a free treat, while all could purchase one or more for a small price.

Thank you to each person who contributed. TOGETHER we CAN MAKE a DIFFERENCE. Looking ahead at next year, the activities mentioned along with many more are being planned. There are opportunities to not only help with these events, but also serve on the PTSA board. My position along with several others are stepping down and would love to work with someone new to take over and assist with any questions or guidance you may need before we have our own students graduate next year themselves. The board plans, organizes and executes experiences for teachers, students and families. If you are interested in serving on the PTSA board please contact myself at [email protected] or Jordan Rodriguez directly at the school. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely, Kim McCloskey Current PTA President

WSHS FOOD PANTRY The WSHS Food Pantry collects donated groceries, that any student may ask for at the front desk, and be given a bag of groceries to take home. Parent volunteers are needed to coordinate this program for next year. If you are interested in helping with this program which benefits the students and families of WSHS, please contact our PTSA.

At this time, the pantry greatest needs are donated canned meats, canned pasta sauces and boxed meal supplements such as Tuna Helper and Chicken Helper. There is also a need for cereals of any kind. If you are able to support the Food Pantry with a food item donation, please bring them to the front desk during school hours.

Thank you to the National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, English Honor Society, Renewable Energy Honor Society, WSHS Latin Club, WSHS Band, WSHS Chorus, and WSHS Leadership who have contributed food and/ or supplies to the pantry this year! Thank you to the WSHS Latin Club for help in sorting donations and organizing the pantry several times this year! All of you have made a difference!

It also looks great on transcripts for colleges and scholarships. To qualify for any Bright Future Scholarships, students are required to complete a number of community service hours to include all other requirements. For more information on these requirements, students and parents are highly encouraged to view the Bright Futures website at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all requirements are met to qualify for a scholarship.

Students are also required to complete the Community Service Application, log of hours, and a (1) page essay of their experience and submit it to their Counselor upon completion. The application and a list of organizations students can volunteer can be found on our school’s website under Guidance and Community Service and must be signed by a counselor for approval.

We also want to give a shout out to our partner Dunkin Donuts. The kids loved the variety and especially the Valentine heart shaped donuts. We want to let everyone know that we had so much fun interacting with the students. We were truly impressed by the good manners and generosity we witnessed every Friday morning. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

A special thank you to all the parent volunteers who spent so many of their hours helping the band have another great year!

WSHS CYBERPATRIOT TEAMS ADVANCE TO NATIONALS

Winter Springs High School (WSHS) has two CyberPatriot teams advancing to the CyberPatriot VIII National Finals in Baltimore, Maryland from April 10-14!

Out of 175 Army JROTC teams competing this year, the WSHS teams are in first and second place. They are the only two Army JROTC teams that will be competing at the National Finals, and two of only 13 All Service Division teams that have earned a chance to compete at the Finals. This is an incredible achievement, especially given that there are 1,281 All Service Division teams registered this year! Our WSHS teams are in the top 1% of the All Service Division!

The WSHS CyberPatriots have a history of excellence and success. They’ve previously been named the CyberPatriot V State Champions; CyberPatriot VI National Finalists; CyberPatriot VII DCSC National Champions; and now the CyberPatriot VIII State Champions.

These students have worked so hard to achieve these results, and their progress is a testament to their dedication. For more information on the CyberPatriot VIII competition, please visit: www.uscyberpatriot.org

ATHLETICSWinter Spring HS

WINTER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS 2015 – 2016Building Character Through Competition The 2015-2016 athletic year continues to move forward, and we have entered the home stretch with the beginning of our Spring season. Headlining an outstanding Winter athletic season was the wrestling team, which finished 7th in the state and produced its 12th individual state champion, James Nereim! Also of significance, the Girls Basketball team completed an outstanding year as they captured the 2016 District Title! I am most proud of the continued show of support from our parents and community as seen through our increased attendance at our home athletic events. Equally, our student body is also attending events in record numbers as our ‘Purple People’ have set a precedent that will carry on with future Bears!

On Tuesday May 17th, we will hold our annual athletic physical night. The physicals will take place in the gym and will begin at 5:30 pm. The cost per physical is $25.00 and payment can be remitted using cash or check (made out to WSHS). This event allows student-athletes to complete their athletic physical and all other necessary paperwork to become eligible for participation for winter springs athletics during the 2016-17 school year. Completing the paperwork at this time will also allow prospective athletes to participate in off-season conditioning, strength training, and open gyms that are offered by many of our teams during the summer. The physical night is sponsored by Orlando Orthopedic and Cora Rehabilitation and proceeds help to fund the Winter Springs Sports Medicine program.

For students interested in participating with Bear Athletics, it is important to have all of the necessary paperwork on file with the Athletic Department PRIOR to tryouts. Only those athletes who have been cleared through the Department will be eligible for tryouts. All information and appropriate paperwork can be found and downloaded on our athletic webpage under the link Athletic Clearance Paperwork. Take time to view our athletic page in its entirety, as there is other important and meaningful information for your reference.

Our Department encourages and seeks your support! There are numerous opportunities for you to become involved throughout the year. Whether you can volunteer time, contribute financially, join a parent support group, become involved in various fundraising initiatives, or just simply be a Bear Fan and attend events, we appreciate any relationship you choose to have with our staff and student-athletes.

Finally, make sure to follow us on Twitter @WSBearAthletics, for all of the latest athletic news and updates. I look forward to our continued progress and advancement, and thank you for your continued support! Go Bears!

They are the only two Army JROTC teams that will be competing at the National Finals, and two of only thirteen All Service Division teams that have earned a chance to compete at the Finals. This is an incredible achievement, especially given that there are 1,281 All Service Division teams registered this year! The Cadet teams are in the top 1% of the All Service Division, and we are very proud of them!

In addition to the CyberPatriots, the Bears Drill Team has performed well over the past two weekends at Zephyrhills High School and Umatilla High School. The Bears earned the right to compete in the State Drill Championships at George Jenkins High School on April 16. The results of the State Qualifier are as follows: • 6- Team 1st place finishes (Male Mixed Squad Exhibition, Female Squad Exhibition,

Male Mixed Platoon Exhibition, Female Platoon Exhibition, Male Mixed Unarmed Squad, Female Unarmed Platoon)

• 2- Team 2nd place finishes (Female Unarmed Squad, Male Mixed Unarmed Platoon)• 2- Team 3rd place finishes (Male Mixed Armed Squad, Female Armed Platoon)• Male and Female Individual Exhibition 1st place finishes (Jacobs, Gracia), Male

Individual Exhibition 2nd place finish (Dzon)• Male Dual Exhibition 1st place finish (Jacobs/Dzon)• Female Dual Exhibition 1st – 3rd place finishes (Gracia and Cook, Farmer and Atwood,

There are a few upcoming highlights for the Cadet Bear Battalion such as the Sunset Parade at Lake Mary High School at 1800 on April 2, the end of year Awards Ceremony on April 28 at 1900 in the school auditorium, and the All-Service National Drill Competition in Daytona Beach scheduled on April 30- May 2.
