Greetings to all Wintonians! It continues to be a real honour for me to serve as President of the Winton Club. Your interest in the University, your various contributions and your generosity continue to be hugely rewarding.

Despite the ever-changing higher education landscape, the University has much to celebrate and last year was a particularly outstanding one for us, marked by a number of prestigious awards, including a five star rating from the European Foundation for Quality Management. We are the only university in the UK to hold this award for the whole institution. Our strong commitment to sustainable development was recognised by a ‘first class’ award in the People & Planet Green League Table, as was our commitment to spirituality, when in December we received the International Faith and Spirit at Work award from the Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace, University of Arkansas. We are also leading the way in sustainable catering within the higher education sector, and have become the first university caterer rated by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), receiving the highest award – Three Star Champion status.

We remain very grateful to all alumni for your support including contributions to our fundraising activities through the annual giving and legacy programmes. In February I had the privilege of formally opening the newly renovated classrooms at Soma School in The Gambia, alongside the University’s Chancellor, Dame Mary Fagan, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, as well as the British High Commissioner for The Gambia, David Morley. The classroom environment can make a real difference to teaching and learning and I’m quite sure that these classrooms will have a positive impact on the children and staff at the school. Your generosity has made it possible for students to visit The Gambia and they often describe their experience as life changing.

Finally, I am delighted to report news of our new Alumnus of the Year award. This year there will be two recipients: Jonathan Gribbin who is honoured for his outstanding achievements within disability sport in extremely difficult circumstances and Carmella Reece who has been a Gambia fundraising super-star at All Saints school in Fleet.

We are grateful to you all for your support in helping to make this and other things happen.

As ever we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during the Winton Club weekend.

With warm wishes to you and your families.

Professor Joy Carter

Dear Fellow WintonianYou will have read in Winter 2011 Venta details of Reunion 2011, when Professor Tom James (1976-2008), proposed the toast and Professor Joy Carter and Peter Sargent (1968-1971) responded. The changed programme for Saturday has had no adverse comments and will be repeated this year. You will see the programme for 2012 elsewhere in this Reunion notice. I particularly draw your attention to overnight accommodation on Friday and Saturday nights, when all those who book bed and breakfast will be staying in Queens Road. This is new student accommodation to the west of St Swithun’s Lodge and Alwyn Hall, with all rooms en suite and all floors served by lifts. These rooms are arranged in flats, so please indicate on the booking slip if you wish to have a room near a fellow guest. There is limited parking immediately outside, with further parking at Alwyn Hall and elsewhere; DO NOT park anywhere on hospital property as your car could be clamped. DO remove all property from your vehicle.

This year we welcome back as our luncheon speaker Chris Higgins who was Director of Estates until 2007. It is hoped that at 3.30 pm on the Saturday he will lead a campus tour with particular reference to recent and not so recent buildings.

At 7.30 pm on Friday and Saturday Cathedral Buffet Suppers will be served for those who have booked. The price does not include wine as bottles will be available for sale, and other drinks may be purchased from the Terrace Bar. The contents of the two meals will not be entirely the same on both evenings.

The Reverend Phil Dykes, who was Chaplain for just under three years, left in September 2011 to become the Diocesan Adult Education Officer, and we both thank him and wish him well. A Dean of Chapel has been appointed and he is the Reverend Peter Waddell who is currently Chaplain of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He will take up his post in September 2012. This year a large number of the services have been taken by the Reverend Ann Keating who has also been appointed as Assistant Chaplain in addition to her duties as Director of Student Services. Ann has kindly agreed to preach at our 11.15am service on Saturday and the Reverend David Reed (1952-1954) will celebrate at the Saturday and Sunday Holy Communion Services.

For those staying overnight on Friday room keys will be available from Reception from 2pm onwards. Reception is in the University Centre building and is open until 7pm. If you arrive after that time, use the internal telephone 7666 for the Site Steward who will give you your room key. This is available without time limit. You must return the key when you depart and if Reception is closed, please return the key to the Site Steward by calling the number above. Should you not return the key you will be charged £25. There are no parking restrictions on campus during the Reunion, so please ignore any signs to the contrary, except those for named persons and disabled badge holders. Ensure you are on University property.

You are asked to be as generous as possible in your donations to the Benevolent Fund and Soma School, The Gambia. Bursaries from the former are given according to our Constitution, and this year, as in 2011, we ask recipients to come back on an evening in October to talk briefly about how the funding was used. The date this year is Thursday 25 October at 7.00 pm, probably in the Chapel, and if you would like to attend please inform the Director of Student Services PA on 01962 826442 or preferably by email to: [email protected] sometime in October and certainly at least seven days before the event. Light refreshments will be served. Donations for Soma School, The Gambia, will be used for micro loans to those who have been pupils. A sum,

which is very small, will be loaned to enable small businesses to be set up making the individual self-sufficient. This is all carefully monitored to ensure that the money is appropriately spent and also to ensure that the amount lent is returned so that it can be used again. PLEASE Gift Aid your donation(s) so that they are thereby increased by 25 per cent. Please be generous as matched funding from the Government ended in 2011.

We welcome back as Alumni Officer Deborah Beard. She is now working on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. We thank Corinne Mackenzie for that which she has undertaken relating to alumni matters in Deborah’s absence. You should also note that Corinne does not work on a Friday. However, messages may be left on voicemail and together with emails will be answered as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing you at Reunion 2012 and inform you that I have booked 2013 Reunion for Friday, Saturday and Sunday 28, 29 and 30 June.
