What is 3G & 4G internet ?

• G stands for generation of mobile technology installed on phones and on cellular networks.

• 3G – Typically about 2 -7 Mbit/s download. Upload 1-2 Mbit/s• Older technology. Wider coverage especially in non rural

• 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution). Typically 2 to 4x faster than 3G

• 4G LTE Advanced. Technically connection speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s Typically speeds 3 x faster than 4G LTE

What does all the Mbit/s jargon mean ?What internet speed do I need ?

• Netflix (Standard Definition) = 3 Mbit/s. Uses 1.4 Gigabyte of data per hour (HD double SD speeds)

• YouTube stream (360P) = .7 Mbit/s Uses 250 – 300 Mbytes per hour

• Music / Radio streaming = 40 - 85 Kbit/s (.085 Mbit/s) Uses approx. 37 Mbytes per hour

• Skype• Voice Only = 40 Kbit/s = 20 Mb per hour (.040 Mbit/s)

• Video (Normal quality) = 150 Kbit/s = 70 Mb per hour (0.15 Mbit/s)

Aim for minimum of 4 Mbit/s. (For future or HD streaming)

What affects your wireless internet speeds ?

• Strength of the 3G / 4G signal ie Distance from the tower

• 1800 or 2300 Mhz bandwidth with Telkom LTE

• Interference / shielding inside the house. Walls etc. (Do not install the device into a steel cabinet)

• Using external attenna helps

• WiFi distance from the router to the computer, cell phone or TV device

A wireless access points (WAP) or Wireless Extender can help where the signal strength is weak in the home.

What else affects your internet speeds ?

•Peak periods. Ie Many other people use the same tower / bandwidth at the same time. When bandwidth is shared the connection is given a

Contention Ratio. (FTTH (Fibre To The Home) is typically 15:1 or 20:1) ie the number of customers per Mb of speed.• Throttling. This normally applies to uncapped internet

where the Fair User Policy (FUP) has been exceeded. (ie 200 Gig)• Latency (Time to reach the destination). Ie Browsing

and downloads from overseas sites can be slower. Voice traffic can also be affected. ie Skype

Contention Ratio Explained

• In layman terms, the contention ratio is the number of customers per Mb of speed. So when we say a 10 Mb link on a contention ratio of 10:1 (ten to one) we are saying that we are sharing 10 Mb with 10 customers. i.e. if you are the only one using the link at a specific time, then you will get 10 Mb. However if 4 others use it at exactly the same time, that means a total of 5 users using the same 10 Mb, we split the link to 2Mb each. So best case you will get 10 Mb, worst case you will get 1Mb. Hence the expression : “Up to 10 Mb”.

• Most low cost FTTH (Fiber to the Home) services are sold at Between 15:1 and 20:1. So 100 Mb links can actually run as low as 5Mb and usually average at about 20-30Mb during peak hours and 60Mb in non peak.
