INTRODUCTION

• The rate of internet users have

increased, We have more than 2.7

billions internet users.

• Threats are increasing at the same

rates.

• There are serious security issues with

WLAN.

• N.B: 70% of network security issues are

because of human factor and only 30%

are because technology issues.

WIRELESS LAN OVERVIEW

4 WIRELEE LAN SECURITY ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS

Wireless LAN differ with traditional

wired LAN.

Wireless LAN uses radio waves and

radio frequency technology.

Users access to the network need

only signals – you are flexible to

move as long as you are within the

range you can get access.

Wireless LAN components are:-

Access points (APs).

Network interface cards/client

adapter.

WLAN ARCHITECTURE

5 WIRELEE LAN SECURITY ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS

There are three types of wireless topology:-

Independent model.

Infrastructure model.

Microcell and Roaming type.

SECURITYPROBLEMS

• Non-authorized users access – With wireless

network unauthorized user can easily gain access to it

and make use of it to surf the internet.

• Information disclosure – Wireless networks are

using radio waves. It’s much easier for information

travelled via Wireless to be captured when right tools

have been utilized.

• Signal interference – Again Wireless that travel

through wave possibility to be interfered with multiple

things like Distance (When you are out the range you

can either get week signal and if you walk further signal

will lost), Buildings and others.

• Spoofing and session

hijacking – This happens

because 802.11 networks do not

authenticate the source address,

which is Medium Access Control

(MAC) address of the frames.

• Eavesdropping – With

wireless an attacker can easily

capture what you are transferring

by creating Man - In – The -

Middle Attack (MitM) that will

allow an attacker to sniff and read

communication between two

individuals.

• Disguised address and block section - Here

is where Attacker can find defects in AP-certified

through parsing the data intercepted by them .This

problem has not too Good solution, preventive

measures can only isolate the important network and

wireless LAN .

• senior attack - With Unsecure wireless, an

attacker can make use of it to penetrated to gain

access to the entire network, meaning; wireless LAN

will serve as a springboard for further invasion of

other network.

SOLUTION FOR WIRELESS SECURITY

• Practical solution for securing WLAN

Changing default SSID

Utilize static IP

Access point placement

Utilize VPN

Minimize radio wave propagation in non-user

areas etc.

• New standards for improving WLAN security

802.1x – Point-to-point protocol (PPP) and

Extensible authentication protocol (EAP).

802.11i – It provides replacement technology for

WEP security.

Implementing Service Set Identifier (SSID) to prevent

unauthorized users access – SSID is a sense that the function

of a similar password. Then provide the password authentication

mechanism, shielding the access of illegal users, to ensure the

security of wireless local area network.

Make use of wireless network card physical address filtering

mechanism – Each wireless card has unique MAC address. By

adding Access Control (Access Control List) based on the

physical address to the AP will ensure that only the physical

address of the registered card to enter the network.

However, in theory, the physical address of IP packets can be

forged, so this is less secure authorization certification. Physical

address filtering solution is hardware certification, rather than user

authentication.

• To avoid senior attack, companies often put the wireless

LAN outside the security shell of the core network. So even if the

wireless LAN was attacked, the core network can also have more

security.

• To extend signal the use of repeater can help – Meaning,

after a certain distance you can add a repeater that will re-

generate again signal and get ready of the interferences.

• We are going to seen from the Video, Eavesdropping can be

avoided when an individual is only get connected to secure

networks and not otherwise.

CONCLUSION

• Wireless LAN is vulnerable

to threats

• No absolute technology to

provide security

• Develop good surfing habit

• Implement necessary

security features from
