Hannah had always found school life frustrating and in herfinal school year Hannah had the added stress that her father became ill. She didn’t continue with any learningfor a year after leaving and was never assessed for dyslexia until she decided to enrol on theBTEC Introductory Certificate in Health & Social Care atWirral Metropolitan College. Unsure whether to go down the chemistry or nursing route, Meganchose a course to develop her skills in appliedscience, finding out more about all of the careerchoices that science can lead to. With goodGCSE grades Megan was accepted straightonto a level 3 course and is doing very wellwith her studies. Megan says, “there is always something new to learn at WirralMet and with the help of my tutors I havereally improved my understanding ofscience and the careers it leads to.”

Students Grace Watson aged 18, and 19-year-old Natasha Hulse are about to take atrip of a lifetime to care for children at an orphanage in Africa. Grace and Natasha,both nursing cadets studying at the College’sCarlett Park Campus, are leaving for Ugandain September to work as part of the Aids Orphans Rescue Programme, as volun-teers at an orphanage in Jinja, Uganda.Natasha said: “We are taking as muchclothing as we can for children in theorphanage. Our family and friendshave all been helping us to getthings to take with us.”Grace added: “We are both really thrilled about going out toUganda.

Mark ThainLifeguard

After being rescued from the water in a swimming pool incident, 17-year-old MarkThain trained to pass his Lifeguard exam- and is now helping adults with their challenges in learning to swim. Mark’sstory of determination began two-and-a-half years ago when he had anasthma attack in the middle of the pool.Mark, a music student at Carlett Park,said: “The next thing I knew I was on theside of the pool taking my asthma pump. Mark explained: “I really wanted to prove toeveryone that I could achieve the Lifeguard certification.”Mark now works with an adult group of non-swimmers at Leasowe, and calls uponhis own experiences to inspire themto achieve.
